Yardwork with John
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 มิ.ย. 2022
Sit back, relax, and zone out while I do my yardwork. Mowing and trimming in the Summer, leaf wrangling in the Fall, snow removal in the Winter, and any other interesting projects that pop up!
Winterizing Equipment & Rearranging my Shed
Lawn mowing and grass trimming are done for the season! And snow may be on the way. So today I'm going to empty out my shed and winterize all the summer equipment, including my weed wacker, two lawn mowers, and yard vacuum. I do not winterize my leaf blower.
Then I'm going to get one of my snow blowers started up and ready to roll. After that, I put everything back in my shed but re-arranged so the winter tools are easy to access and the summer tools are packed away.
I also install my driveway markers so if it does snow, it makes snow blowing a lot easier.
And once I'm done with all the boring works, I then gas up my go kart and take it for a quick spin around the block!
Here's a link to the red snowblower restoration video I mention:

Last Big Leaf Cleanup of the Season - Late November
มุมมอง 490หลายเดือนก่อน
It has been two weeks since my last day of yardwork, and most of the remaining leaves have fallen. We had some windy days, so the winds have blown the leaves into some interesting piles around my house. Before I start with the ground, I have to climb up on the roof and clean out my gutters. They are currently filled with Oak tree leaves! After that, I'm going to do things a little differently. ...

When attaching the auger belts mine is just like yours where the retainer clip only is under 1 belt and its the other belt that keeps falling off for me. Also I have a broken spring attached below the retainer clip where there is a hole but I'm not sure where to connect it to? Refer to 45:31 to know what hole I'm talking about. Hope give me some guidance.
That 'clip' is the other end of the lever that tensions the belts and engages them when you squeeze the drive lever. So you need to disconnect that lever to move it in such a way that you can easily get both belts under it. Regarding the broken spring, I'm not sure but if you look up a parts breakdown diagram, one that you use when buying parts, it may tell you where the springs go.
@@YardworkWithJohn Thanks for replying. The retainer clip you are referring to, is it supposed to sit under both belts? In this video and on mine this clip is not long enough to go under both belts? As far as the spring, I found it on a parts diagram but can't find anywhere where it attaches to...
@@Couts007 The belts go under the clip, so the belts do not touch the clip at all. The best should have equal tension. One way I knew one of my belts was not routed right was because one belt was way tighter than the other. And that was because it was on the wrong side of that clip.
@@YardworkWithJohn So a better view of what I'm talking about and trying to say is the 46:07 mark. The clip only is under the front belt. The back belt has nothing holding it in place. The back belt slides off when disengaging the auger.
@@Couts007 When properly installed, those belts should be pretty snug. They shouldn't be able to fall off and it should take a lot of prying to get them off. When you disengage the augers, it should loosen them just enough that they don't spin the pulleys but not enough that they come loose. What you describe makes me wonder if your belts are the wrong size, too long? I'm also not 100% sure what you mean, you say the clip is under the front belt but at 46:07, the belts are under the clip, the clip is not under the belt.
Great job. I’ve found that the flap corners don’t really need to be notched, because when you do the initial run-in, the flaps will wear to the bolt heads and anything else in their path within a minute.
Yeah I figured that would be the case but the very first time I did this mod, the rubber kind of crumbled where it was hitting stuff so now I go a little overboard just to be safe!
Do you know what moter that is?
I do! Its the motor that came on the machine new, a Subaru Robin EX-17. I think they call it a 6.5 HP engine.
@@YardworkWithJohn Thanks for the info
Nice 👍
Thanks
Good video! I'm going to have to replace the ring on my MTD. If I can find a 5.5 inch one in stock anywhere. I think ill have to order it
I order everything, I wouldn't expect anyplace to have them in stock, but who knows. You should be able to find one online no problem though. Worse case, ebay. I have another fixer-upper machine in my basement so at some point this winter, i'll be posting yet another drive ring replacement video, unless by some miracle the ring on that machine is still good. but i highly doubt it.
Love the music!
Thanks, all my tracks come from the free youtube music library
Couple of tips, 1) when you had the blower apart you should have painted it, makes it easier to flip. 2) When you changed fuel lines all you had to do was place the old and new end to end, find a bolt that fits tightly in the lines, cut the bold head off and simply connect the lines by screwing them on, then push and pull the new line through. I have done probably 50 fuel lines that way, works like a charm.
I thought about painting it but it was winter and I really didn't have a good way to paint it inside. I don't have a garage and I don't want to paint in my basement. Plus I just don't like painting so I just left it as it. Regarding the fuel line, the original was 7/16th but all I could find was 1/2", and between that extra thickness, and how tight the plate behind the flywheel was pinching against it, there was no way I was going to be able to slide it through the easy way. But the hard was wasn't all that difficult so its all good. I made a separate video JUST for doing the fuel line, using the clips from this video!
That's a great hobby rebuilding old machines. I started doing it with lawnmowers and snowblowers (even motorcycles) I've done about 14 machines in the past couple years and re-sold them. They are so easy to work on and parts are easily available for most brands (I stay away from the oddballs) I found the older snowblower models are built much better than any of the newer machines on the market (which cost so much)
It's fun, but this machine was way bigger of a job than I was expecting. I have another one I'm going to try to do this winter, hopefully it goes easier/smoother. As for this red one, I just fired it up the other day to get it ready for snow, if it ever does snow again!
@@YardworkWithJohn Seems like if it HAS to be done in a set amount of time, it's pain in the ass. But if it's a hobby and can be done whenever, it's fun!! I like to take my time and do things right anyway.
@@PainterD54 Yeah I'm always under pressure to get them done in time for me to finish editing the video and upload it while it's still in season. I didn't get THIS video uploaded until springtime, so now 6 months later, i'm finally getting some traffic to it!
Can you please make a video for getting ready for winter pls.
Hi. What kind of video do you mean? Like a shed-changeover type of video?
@ yes like that.

Lawn is looking great John, nice and green 👍 Nice footage from up on the roof too. Curious but do you overseed the lawn in Fall or Spring at all?
Thanks! So at one point, I decided I was going to start overseeding every year. But turns out if your lawn is healthy, you don't really need to go general overseeding. So I might overseed my problem areas, like that spot in the back that was formerly a concrete walkway, OR the entire front because you can't tell on camera but the front is some weird kind of grass, and it keeps popping up wild violet which drives me nuts. BUT I don't usually do much general, wide-area overseeding.
ALSO color correction is a big part of video editing, especially when I film nearly all of my videos as the sun is settings. So things may not be as green in person as they appear on video :D
Haha well lawn is looking good on screen so just keep doing whatever works! I think by you mulching the leaves really helps too as a natural fertilizer. Definitely easier than bagging them too.
it would be more efficient if you switched between a rake and blowers until you can get a backpack blower. the echo 9010 T is the best available
I don't usually move big piles of leaves around, so i don't normally have a need for a much more powerful blower. But on this day it would have been useful.
Had the same issue getting the lower unit back on. I ended up getting the lower barely threaded on and used a wrench to turn the motor over by hand which allowed the lower to slip into place. Hindsight being 2020 I should’ve just left it in drive so I could spin the prop by hand.
Hey, I think I have those same box wrenches. Are they in a plastic sheet that wraps up?
Nope! These came from harbor freight in a fragile, hard to use plastic holder. I have since put a bunch of hooks on my peg board and keep them all hanging on the wall like that.
Good idea and better for the environment than bagging them up!
I didn't notice much change in lawn health after the first season I did this. Hopefully if I keep doing it, then long term it will help the lawn grow even better. But even if it doesn't, it is SO MUCH EASIER doing it this way vs raking and picking them up, I'm definitely going to keep it up this way!
Mulched all the insect eggs, 😭
More nutrients for next year's grass!
And then? Can you just leaf them there? When I lived in Toronto my neighbors always felt it necessary to point out I didn't clean my leaves yet.
Yup after mulching them, just leave them and they dissapear and return to nature. No need to pick them up.
Does it get stinky?
Nope not at all! The mulched up bits are so small, they dry right out and its like its not even there.
@YardworkWithJohn good to know!
@@Peskymacaroon It definitely feels wrong the first time you do it. But it's amazing how the leaves just disappear. And you can do it again and again week after week. If the leaf blanket is thick enough, I will probably go run over it with a second pass just to make sure its fully mulched.
That’s a very good idea
It's so much easier than picking them up!
Healthier for the grass than raking
I swept my screws from my kona process, do you recommend doing helicoli? since where I live there are no spare parts
Brake mount screws? Did you strip them? Both or just one?
@@YardworkWithJohn They are Seat Stay Pivot Assembly, they are the screws that go to the link, m10*1.0*12mm. You have to use a double allen wrench to remove them, but the male screw was swept away.
what is the internal diameter of the fuel line?
I believe it is 1/4" I.D. but I'm not 100% sure on that
Oh don't worry, the 2025 honda engines wont need an oil change. ;-/ And I won't be buying one either!
Don't knock 'em till you try 'em. They have a lot of good features including literally what you said, you don't have to change the oil. Especially if your yard is on the small side, it could be very convenient.
i had my husqavarna since 2012, replaced the friction disk and auger belt good to go.
Yup that one little piece of rubber is so extremely critical!
Could have picked it up Due to the machine ,the small pieces of leaves are now in the grass and difficult to remove
That's the thing, you don't pick up the small pieces! You leave them right where they are and they decompose into the lawn and fertilize the the grass next spring!
Put on your lawnmower bag and bag up those leaves.
beneficial for the grass. I mulch my leaves as well.
Noooooo, the mulched up leaves are good for the lawn, and its way easier. If I put the bag on the mower, I would have had to empty it literally 100 times. I did the same thing last year, mulching up all of the leaves, and they all disappear by spring. It's a great system and so much easier!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤❤❤❤
same with my husqavarna, i had to replace the fiction disk and i did and it's good has new.
I replaced the w.p impeller and now I cant get it to shift right has anyone had this problem. Is it the shift linkage ? Just not lined up right ?
That would be my guess.
There is a smaller shaft in your lower unit spin it all the way to neutral with plyers then place it back in correctly. I had this problem a while back
Suggestion: you have to mow it lower!
So all summer long, I mow at the tallest setting. What I do this time of year is start lowing it one notch per week so by the last mow of the season, its nice and low for Winter!
So is everyone else
Really, I didn't see anyone else mowing leaves in my back yard??? :D
Where’s the dust from the leaves, as they crumble in the vacuum to the bagger?
Well the bag filters most of the dust, and the rest just clouds around the machine. This machine's air filter is ALWAYS dirty.
How do I fix the brakes on my go-kart
Thats a pretty open ended question, you should start by googling your machine's exact symptoms.
Why is there so much water coming into your gutter though
Well, because it was pouring out! :P
Great video. To the point without a ten minute lead up to why it needs to be replaced. Great job.
Thanks! This machine is still sitting in my shed waiting to be used. It hasn't snowed since I started on youtube, maybe this year I'll get to see what it's got!
It’s still beyond me why people mow their lawn in a square pattern. Much faster to outline once or twice, then go from one side to another…looks much better too.
I use the patterns I do for one simple reason: If people are watching my videos to watch me do yardwork, then my videos will be better if I stay closer to the camera. So I divide my lawn into smaller "chunks" so I'm always close to the camera. When I'm mowing my lawn on a non-filming day, I do in fact mow the full length of my back yard, and it is easier because theres MUCH less U turns to make. But if I filmed that way, I'd be disappearing into the horizon and that makes for a boring video to watch.
Hey mate any chance i could ask you a few questions? I have the same motor just the 115 model
I may not know the answers, but sure go for it.
Ej co on odwala bo nie ma scientej trawy na ziemi nie ma kosza nic nie kosić
Actually the grass is quite tall. Theres no bag because I'm mulching it, so the clippings just fall back in to the lawn.
Good stuff
Thanks!
👏👏👏
Hi John, enjoy your videos, your trimmer does a great job, and I saw it knocking the slats out of your chain link fence, the white slats in fence. I wanted to ask you, when you mow and its a bit wet do you get the big swirls in the grass like I have done here in Seattle? I have a Honda HRN216 and can not get through wet or even damp grass without the swirling after completion. Thanks
Interesting, no i've never gotten swirls in the grass. The normal striping you get from going back and forth are even more intense when it rains, and of course the mower clogs up more, but thats about it.
Also I've gotten a lot better at just edging along the fence, years ago when I first bought the house, I would always get sucked in to the fence and hit it pretty hard. But even so, I'm not sure those missing slats are from me. I've never seen chunks of slat flying across my lawn. A lot of them have just migrated up over the years and could probably be pulled back down with some pliers or something. I'd love to replace them all but that would really be a difficult job. It is an ugly fence but it does its job well.
Can’t figure out why in the world you’re walking forward with that trimmer
It very well could be a trimmer that spins clockwise.
It's not a saw blade, it works just as good in either direction. The angles and positions I choose are usually based on trying to not block the camera so you can see what I'm doing better.
A trimmer does not work the same depending on which way you’re walking. If it’s a commercial grade trimmer and it spins counterclockwise it will not trim as well if you’re walking forward. If it’s a residential grade trimmer and it spins clockwise then it will not trim as well if you’re walking backwards. of us have the better trimmers that spin counterclockwise a you will usually see us walking backwards
@@theallaroundguy2399 I'm walking backwards with one currently!
Rhett
Weak blower
It's not as weak as it looks here, the problem is that it was raining and all of the leaves are soaked.
Get a backpack blower
I honestly don't need one. The only reason these leaves were a struggle was because they were soaking wet and I was getting rained on the whole time. Normally, when things are dry, its a lot easier!
I thought you were going to bag the leaves not mulch them.
Nope no bagging! I may do a small amount of bagging of just the leaves on the driveway in a few weeks if theres too many to blow on to the lawn and mulch. But besides that, I did all mulching last year and it is SO much easier and saves so much time!
@@YardworkWithJohn but you said it was not the best idea and you would do the same from a couple years ago
@@OTC1-o8l Do you have a link to the comment you are talking about, i don't remember ever saying it wasn't a good idea. I do remember saying it didn't seem to "help" the lawn any extra, but it also didn't seem to harm it at all. And so because it was WAY easier, I would probably keep doing it.
I just finished repainting my entire foundation because the guy who used to do my lawn weed-wacked the paint off to a height of one foot above the lawn in some places all around the house. The foundation looks great now but, now I have to figure out how to whipper snip without hitting the foundation and leaving it in the mess HE left it in. I almost felt like telling him that, because of what HE did that HE should have to pay for the 4 gallons of paint and HE should have to paint my foundation for free but I figured it would be less aggravating to just tell him I would no longer require his services. When I did, the smart alec 🤬 sent me a text trying to guilt me by telling me he needed that lawn mowing money to feed his kid. Grrr!
Well, if your grass is growing up against the foundation, and you're hiring the guy to weed wack, then you really can't blame him for taking the paint off. Theres no way to avoid that, other than letting the grass just grow tall, OR putting a gravel bed or something against the house so the grass doesn't grow up against the foundation. In my case, I hate the paint on my foundation so I'm glad weed wacking has removed some of it and I can't wait for the rest to flake off. I might actually scraped it off at some point.
@@YardworkWithJohn Well I do, in fact, blame him because he was the guy operating the weed wacker, not me. A gravel bed or flower bed sound like a good idea or maybe just operating the whipper snipper at an angle toward the ground instead of any where from the bottom of the painted foundation to 12 inches above which is what he was obviously doing. Thanks for the gravel bed suggestion.
This is amazing, John! I am a rookie about to undertake changing the belt and blade. What socket sizes are needed?
Thanks! But not sure of the exact socket size, or if all of these machines even use the same size bolt. I'd start with a 1/2" and move up or down from there.
Did you mow so you can post on Wednesday
The last mowing video I posted was after this coil video, so that mow is this coil running. I generally do one mowing video every 2 weeks and I try to post on monday mornings but lately I've been doing the yardwork on saturday instead of thursday so the video doesn't make it out by monday. So I don't really have a strict posting schedule.
@@YardworkWithJohn okay
Husqvarna guy like me but I’m going away from the brand
Husqvarna with a honda motor. This mower has been a TOTAL champ for me!
Great vid! I know “rich” and “lean” are the technical terms for how it can be running which tells you what needs adjusted, but the way you labeled the screws high speed and low speed made it click for me. Now it feels obvious. Thanks!
Thanks! It's funny, just today I tried adjusting them again while I was weedwacking and ended up making it worse. Once I dialed it in, I should have left it alone! hah!
Hate that! Right after I got it all dialed in and felt happy and relieved my son said the mower wouldn’t start. Then my wife said the vacuum quit. THEN my other son said the newly tuned trimmer died 😱 I kid you not. Thankfully they were all quick fixes but sheesh. 🤦🏼♂️
I’m getting a cordless trimmer. Done messing around with my husqvarna 128DJX. POS. Never worked properly from day one.
Really? I've had excellent luck with this husqvarna trimmer. I don't know what model it is but its always started right up for me and ran great. It may help that this machine has had fresh gas and oil and seafoam mix in every tank its whole life. But it's probably 6 or so years old at this point and still runs like a champ. I also have a chainsaw attachment on it that I use once in a while. I want to get one of those sweeper attachments for it but they seem to be hard to find.
At least yours is running 😢
Like a champ!
