Scoring LS Mark’s Original Cartoon, “Catching Up!”
I made a last minute video breaking down my score to LS Mark's original cartoon, "Catching Up!" In it, I talk about the unique direction I was given and how I went about creating the music for the show. I break down cues, showing individual instruments, sharing some of the samples I used, and explaining my choices as best I can!

Hi! I sent an email to you (Fyre Synch Hungary), can you please respond?
Thanks for this masterclass, now I'm motivated to make my own series from you and mark
Do it!!!
This was a great video! As someone who is both a composer/songwriter and wannabe animation filmmaker, I've really enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes from this project. Especially seeing stuff like the direction you were given and how amazing it turned out. I definitely noticed all of those little musical moments while I was watching the cartoon for the first time. You should be very proud, well done!
Incredibly kind of you to say. I’m really glad you enjoyed the toon and my video! Thank you!
So much potential hope for the best for Catching Up!
The music was so good in it
Thank you!
This man proves that you don’t need an entire 30 piece orchestra for a cartoon when you already have it in your computer
spending 34 mins here on this video was totally worth it, really got to learn a lot from your working process it was fun and very educative
A massive compliment 🙏 Thank you so much for watching the whole thing. I’m really glad you enjoyed it and found it valuable!
I want to hire you so badly for my next project. But I’m gonna have to work extra hard at my dad’s barber shop
Bro literally just shoot me an email I gotchu 🤘🏼 jessehaugen@notemuse.com

Saw the pilot during Sunday, it blew my mind!!! Great score you did there Jesse 💜💜💜
Thank you so much!
You did a fantastic job with the music on the pilot
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙏
I wish I paid more attention to the music while watching the pilot because this all sounds so good! I've been trying really hard to get intoudic creation n' stuff, and this is some very inspiring stuff. You did a great job, and big ups to that clarinet player 👍👍
Thank you so much 🙏 And agreed! Clarinetist rocked it
You're a genius dude! I can't imagine how much knowledge and practice it takes to do this kind of work. Thanks for the amazing video, one of the most transparent I've seen :)
Incredibly kind of you to say, thank you! That’s always my goal 🙏
Great lite tutorial actually
Thanks!
This is amazing, I always wondered how you would compose that old school cartoon jazz.
Thank you! Yeah, it’s crazy. And I feel like I’m only really scratching the surface of how brilliant that stuff really can be
i love the work that you did for his cartoon. the credits song, the club scenes, the general background music, it really reminds me of something you'd hear in high school!
Aren’t we all just trying to relive the glory days of high school??
I loved the music in the show. I cant wait for more episodes
Thank you so much! Me too! I reply hope we get to do more
Really nice breakdown! You're right, the live clarinet really breathes in life to all those already neat vst sections!
Thank you! And yes!! I’ll Never pass up an opportunity for human musicians!
Is the video inside the cubase project or is it a seperate window?
The cartoon video is inside Cubase. The video of me is through OBS!
the cartoon video playing in the project file sounds really useful for scoring and stuff! I wish that were a feature for all DAWs (to my knowledge the daw I use, Ableton, doesn't have that lol)
This is a feature in all daws! Ableton should be able to do it too
Hey Jessie. Love the way you explain the choices you made when scoring this cartoon. As you may remember your video from 3 years ago (How I Won a Film Scoring Contest) first got me started in movie scoring. By now I have about 15 short films under my belt. And the next two projects are a 30-minute film and a one-hour film. I'm constantly learning and loving every bit of it.
Amazing! Thanks for watching. It’s great to hear that you’re doing so well!
Hi Jesse, thanks for this
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
do u have a favorite character from the show
I really like clay! I relate with his social anxiety and I like that in the end he’s supporting Rob standing up for himself 🙂
@@jessehaugen thats really cool :D
Its cool seeing the behind the scenes on how the music was scene. You did a nice job on the score man!
Eyyy thank you so much 🙏 I’m really glad you enjoyed it. And thank you for watching!
I adore the soundtracks to stuff like looney tunes and animaniacs, Always taking time to appreciate that kinda music along with the animation itself. So hearing a in depth over view of that "Micky mouseing" (for lack of a better word, is that a bad name for it sorry if so) type music was super interesting to me. Loved this video.
No that’s the name for it we all use! Haha I love it too. It’s fun to play in that medium and I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙂
I knew when I was watching something about the music hitted differently. I liked how there was lots of care and thought put in. It's giving classic tom and jerry vibes.
That’s incredibly kind of you to say! Thank you!
Ls mark actually made a video about the music of cartoons a few months ago. So it almost feels full circle that so much effort was put into scoring his cartoon. Also, great work on the music. The score really enhanced certain scenes. Especially all the scenes in the club.
Thank you so much! The club scenes were mostly diegetic music they snagged from somewhere, but I agree it was cool!
I really enjoyed the music that plays when the girls are telling Rob to be their coatrack and Clay helps him to stand up for himself. I thought that the score was brilliant, great work!
I really appreciate that! I was proud of that scene too. Thank you so much!
Really cool stuff! I feel like the soundtrack behind cartoons (especially indie projects like this) go hugely unnoticed by passing viewers, so this was very insightful to watch.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found it interesting/insightful. It’s cool to be a part of projects like this and cast a light on some of the less thought about aspects.
Just wanted to say. This is my 3rd time watching this, this year! It's so incredibly informative. There's so little tutorials online about spotting for emotional storying writing. Thank you so much. I know this isn't my last time watching this either.
My pleasure! Thank you so much for watching. I’m really glad you find it so helpful.
@@jessehaugen Absolutely, mate. Thanks again. It truly is gold!!! I learn something new with each watch.

Love your videos! Please keep them coming. Love your process, love your music, love your orchestration. And LOVE the finished product!
This is incredibly kind, thank you! It’s sometimes hard to justify the time and effort to make these, but comments like this make it worth it!
TH-cam videos of this kind usually have waaay too much talking and not enough music, however crude or fragmentary. This one is a real exception. It's very informative to get a blow-by-blow of your thinking.
That’s incredibly kind of you to say. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Which DAW and Virtual instrument companies do you prefer?
Cubase! And somewhere in these comments I’ve listed a bunch of the libraries I use.. I also listed them in a Q&A video on my channel! It’s a lot 🙃
I am so moved in all 6 directions at once
Woaaaooooooh!!!!
amazing
Thanks for watching!

@jkamp_music my pleasure! Thanks so much for watching and best of luck
@@jessehaugen Thank you very much!
Super rad sounds! Love my perc organic - Definitely have to check this out
You should!! Thanks for watching
Man this was such a good breakdown I learned a lot ! Instant sub 🙏🏼
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed
that portal opening music is *outrageous*, pure hollywood scoring, love it
I’m so proud of that opening too! It means a lot that you’d say that, so thank you!
wheres the time stamp when the music plays?
From the video description: 25:10 - Live orchestra (with video of the session) 27:22 - Final mix (with sheet music)
wow,great work!Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
A "film scoring contest" means a film which is in the process of producing a score for a contest. According to your title, you won a film that scored a contest. If instead you wanted to make grammatical sense, you need the hyphen: A contest for film scoring is a film-scoring contest. It looks like you may never win a grammar contest.
Ah yes, just like all the “hot dog eating contests” where the hot dogs are in the process of eating for a contest 😂 Lock me up!
love this break down great stuff
Thank you! Appreciate you watching
I love this library
Sounding great dude! It sounds like you guys have got the primary things I’d look for covered. The only thing I’d love to hear is muted strum loops in addition to one shots. Maybe just some quarter/eighth/sixteenth note muted strums for added texture? That’s one thing I like to add under more “Powell-esque” pieces whenever I can. Sounding great once again and good luck!
Awesome! Yes we have plans for driving muted stuff like that as well as one shots (up and down strokes in round robins)! Thanks for the insight
Man, hearing about you struggling to NOT work to picture is so different from how I feel. Scoring to picture has been the bane of my existence haha! I’m much more used to trailer and production music, I think. I’d like to learn how to work to picture though. It seems like a great skill to have
I’m so bad at it haha Honestly, I’ve gotten better at it in the last year or so as I’ve had a little more opportunity to work on pop songs and other things that are more standalone music type stuff. It’s helped open my mind and given me an excuse to write outside of context or picture. But yeah, definitely something I’ll keep working on! Let’s both get good at both!
