Fossil Preparation (ammonite) with a Dremel 290 Engraver

I have the problem with the ammonite air scribe, that only air comes out at the tip. 😢 Can I try the same solution on my pen like in the video? It’s almost brand new, maintaining it and still doesn’t work. 😭
Hi! Yes, the usage and troubleshooting steps are the same! Don't worry, your tool is covered by a full warranty and we're always on hand to help. Drop us an email at info@zoicpalaeotech.co.uk with the symptoms and we'll get it up and running properly 👍🙏
@@zoicpalaeotech Hi, thank you. I will try it, if it doesn’t work I will get in touch with you.
I don’t think I have an air compressor. Can I just use an electric tire pump. Idk how much of this works. Or do I have an air compressor somewhere in the house? Do most people have them
Hello there, if you get a chance to recommend a good, solid scribe tool for me to purchase, I've been researching for a few days now, i would very much appreciate a suggestion. Around $300 or less would be great. Thanks for your time. Great videos
Every time I use my trilobite air tool i improve my skills and techniques. It’s extremely fun to do but you should always take brakes. I’m still a novice, I’m still on common ammonites, and I still occasionally hit the fossil but I’ve finally honed my technique enough to get through tough Yorkshire limestone!
Where can you buy the rocks for prep?
Incredible
You just invented a new tool! Also here’s my bank account info because you might as well just take all my money
🤣🤣
How much is this please 😊
I could watch fossil prep videos nonstop all day long
Hello, I am new to fossil prepping and I was wondering what is the difference between this and and micro air abrasive. Is there any reason I would need this if I plan to get a micro air abrasive?
Hi! There are many situations where air abrasives can't be used - it could be that the fossil is softer than the encasing rock, or that the abrasive powder would damage the surface of the fossil. We find that we get a better finish with the Balaur under the microscope on the vast majority of fossils, even where abrasives could be used, although it is naturally much more time consuming.
@@zoicpalaeotech got it, thank you for the clarification!
Hey can I ask, is your Paraloid B72 plastic in acetone or wax in acetone? I can’t remember.
The product in this video is AKEMI liquid wax. It's quite different to Paraloid B-72, and is based on a combination of waxes. When applied, it intensifies the colour of the fossil, and dries down quite matt. It can then be buffed up to a satin-like shine if desired, or left matt. It's great for any fossils that you don't want to look unnaturally shiny :). www.zoicpalaeotech.co.uk/products/akemi-polishing-fluid-no-10-2012-100ml-varnish
Paraloid B-72 on the other hand is a conservation-grade acrylic resin, often dissolved in acetone. This can be used as a consolidant, adhesive or varnish (leaves a satin-like sheen). More information here -www.zoicpalaeotech.co.uk/pages/paraloid-b72-in-fossil-preparation
@@zoicpalaeotech yeah thought so, thanks! Also do you have any fossil glue products? B72 works on some stuff but I need a stronger adhesive.
@@DreadEnder We have a wide range of superglues (great for smaller joins) and epoxies (for larger/heavier fossils). Paraloid B72 as an adhesive is reasonably strong once it has cured, but the main reason to use it over something else is because it is reversible with acetone. It's also used in museums because the join is strong, but not superstrong. Let's say you were to drop your Roman amphora that you've glued back together with Paraloid B72, it will mostly break along the original breaks. If you'd glued it back together with superglue, it would find new places to break. Superglue: www.zoicpalaeotech.co.uk/collections/consolidants-adhesives/superglue (and more info here about using superglues in fossil prep - www.zoicpalaeotech.co.uk/pages/superglues-in-fossil-preparation) Epoxies: www.zoicpalaeotech.co.uk/collections/adhesives/epoxies
@@zoicpalaeotech cool thanks!
Took a couple hours to get used to it but it is an excellent tool!
This one is a BRAND NEW tool, only released this weekend 🥳. It's called the Ammonite and has quite a bit more power than our other budget tool, the Trilobite
@@zoicpalaeotech oh yeah sorry I got confused with the two, I have the trilobite. I expect this one will be my next step up!
@@DreadEnder It's got quite a bit more power behind it than the Trilobite (different internal mechanism), so the two would compliment each other very well.
Up to now had a dremmel now really into it all and ordered this pen and a compressor super excited! How amazing that this pen is made in th uk
Tools like that always amaze me. So impressive.
Such a good tool. Darn good.
Man, that's a good tool. But it's pretty expensive.
Hello, what is the name of the compressor on time 1:30? Thank you
Do these nibs work with any dremmel or just the ZOIC palaeotech one? I got a cheap dremmel for testing but all the bibs are sandpaper
I'd love to try one of these. I've just ordered some of your tips for a Dremel to start off with. If I advance what size of compressor would I need minimum? Also what makes the most noise. The compressor or the pen? ( I've got depression and fossil prep seems fairly soothing )
50L it's good for the compressor, and the compressor make more noises
@@apc_r4431 Thanks for letting me know. Hope you've had a good Christmas ✌️
Could you make a beginner video on one of your basic products?
Great information
Definitely enjoy seeing prep progress!
❤
Great video
Crinoids one of my favorite fossils. Beautiful work. ♥️
Just bought one from yourselves, looking forward to using it 😁👌
Huh interesting....wonder if it could be used for scrimshaw
Can you do a video about using a air compressor and scribe properly?
We have a few videos up on our channel with some tips on plugging in your tool to the air compressor, adjusting the pressure and some advice on how to use the tool in the workshop :)
Thanks!
Excellent video. Thanks, Mihai!
I'm really excited. I expect mine in the post today. ZOIC has, by far, the best communication content for users in the business.
Looks good! Will hopefully get one of these soon to add to my Chicago 😎👏👏
Absolutely cannot wait to get mine. I've been looking for something like this for over a decade and finally your good selves have created the perfect tool😃👍
The real star of this video is that gleaming pyrite at 3:45!
The best fossil👍👍
One problem is my compressor also has a male connector so I had to get it modified
It’s doing great so far! Struggles with harder rock and has to re pressurise frequently but it a great starter tool!
A new compressor is definitely in order ... Or a ZOIC Chicago 😜. The ZOIC Chicago is much more powerful and so you get through rock more quickly, and it has a much lower air consumption than the Trilobite
Will we get vids for the other pens in the range too? And which pens/ styluses are best for different matrices etc? TIA!
Yes, we're working on a video for each of the different pens 😁. We hadn't thought of doing one for the different stylus options though and that's a brilliant idea - definitely one to do at some stage!
Brilliant! Thanks for creating tutorial videos. These will be valuable for training prep lab volunteers.
Glad it will be useful! Many more on their way!
Perfect!
Great tips thanks 😊
You can see my first run with the trilobite on my channel and although it’s a little on the weak side for the type of rock I’m using it on I know it’s a beginner tool and isn’t designed for it so I’ll stick to sandstone also my compressed isn’t overly powerful so I only have about 3 minutes before I have to repressurise
We did see! My advice would be to hold it a little more like a pen, which will give you more control. Check out the video we have on the Trilobite here - th-cam.com/video/QehahLzIgak/w-d-xo.html. Harder rocks will be slower going than softer rocks with the Trilobite, but you can through pretty much anything at it! It might just need a little more patience than with a more powerful air scribe. You will have the advantage with it that it can be very delicate, so when you're working on the centres of ammonites, you'll have a lot of control and precision. When you look at a fossil someone has prepped, you can't tell how long it took them, but you can tell how careful they were with the finishing touches :).
I'm looking starting up with fossil prep (ive been more into the finding) and your Chicago packs look like they might fit the bill for an all round starter pen. Unfortunately the dremel isn't up to the Yorkshire stuff with my level of patience!
Even the smallest, most delicate air scribe is a huge step up from the Dremel! The Dremel is super affordable but everything does take a long time. You're spot on, the ZOIC Chicago is the best all-rounder for Yorkshire matrix. You've got enough power to remove rock at a decent rate, but enough finesse to prep the centres of ammonites and do more delicate work. 👍
That looks amazing 👏
I'm not sure whose idea was that originally, but it's ingenious. I mean the pneumatic scribe (the air pen), which is so powerful going through rock like a hot knife through butter. 👍👍
C’est quoi ce produit que tu mets dessus à la fin ?
What are the clues that indicate there’s a fossil in the rock?
Hi Colleen, this one you can see the ammonite just peeking out. Usually you can see a little bit of a fossil sticking out of a rock either just on the surface or if you split a nodule. There are some rocks that contain fossils, and some that don't. This is a nodule from Lyme Regis beach where with a trained eye you can learn to pick out certain rocks as more likely to contain fossils than others based on colour, texture and shape which helps you determine which layer of rock in the cliff it came from. It takes many many years to get good at this!
What type of cabinet are you prepping this in?
You really need to post more! I sub to a lot of paleo channels and although I haven't subbed to you right now, this video was fascinating
you could circumcise a fly with that thing,,,,im impressed
Interesting analogy
Beautiful.
