A couple who found solace in nature. Bugs, birds & more from our back garden to the world.
Birding in Kenya, February 2024, part 3: Kakamega Forest and Lake Victoria
Birding in Kenya, our third destination was Kakamega Forest. Many great species, but the thick vegetation made it difficult to see and photograph them. After that we headed to Kisumu for a boat trip on Lake Victoria, to find the papyrus specialists.
We travelled with Cisticola Tours, our guide Simon and driver/guide Winston helped us see many specialities and plenty of our targets.
We can't always get photos of every species - our style is "birding with a camera" rather than dedicated photography. We try to show our favourite photos - sometimes a good photo of a common bird, sometimes a good bird even if the photo isn't so great.

Many interesting observations. Papyrus gonolek very beautiful bird, and two species of kingfishers in one tree. Also interesting looking hoopoe, how different from this in Europe which I know. 👍 It was very interesting to watch. Best wishes!

Hi, this is pretty much our itinerary, for the Cusco part at least: www.amazonbirding.com/birding-southern-peru It was quite fast paced to fit it all in, but well worth it.

Nice that you got pictures of the antpitta. When I was in Carara we could hear one singing but it never came close enough for us to see it.
It took a bit of tracking down but we were lucky to get great views!
Crrazy when they migrate many miles
I love birds

Wow... different types of beautiful birds, thanks for sharing.
Thank you very nuch
Nice photos and beautiful birds, I would like to visit Costa Rica soon, which location should I go ? Thanks for your sharing.
Sorry for the late reply, we've been out in the field! One great thing about Costa Rica is you really can't go wrong. If you like feeders and close-up birds then there's Cinchona, Miriam's and Paraiso Quetzel. If you like natural surroundings then La Selva, Tortoguero and Carara. Then there's places like Arenal and Las Cruces that have both. And all these places are only a few hours apart!
Thank you for all your great videos. We are heading to Colombia later this year, hopefully get some great footage as you have.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope you get all your target birds
Great video(s) and I am using them to study for my self-guided trip in Peru for 2025. There are two birds that you might double check for ID...Paramo Pipit looks like a female Plumbeous/Ash-breasted Sierra Finch and the Pardodi's Hemispingus looks like a Citrine Warbler. Incredible photos and videos....thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for visiting. We will review the birds' id.
Insane luck to get the dusky starfrontlet!

Will definitely be following your next adventures.
