Hey Megan, thanks so much. For me, I was made redundant from my perm position as an Account Manager, applied for many jobs (perm and freelance) and ended up getting a freelance PM role, I enjoyed the variety so much (and the money) that I just stuck with it. So there was no real transition per sa as I went from no job to a freelance role. I know it can be challenging going from perm to freelance as most freelance roles are immediate starts and perm roles usually require you to give a months notice. If you are looking to take the leap, I would just recommend making sure you have some money saved up to cover yourself, just in case it takes longer than expected

So glad you find my videos useful. Every PM tool I use I have learned on the job whist working with my clients. My favourite ones are Slack (although this is more of a communication tool but many companies use Slack to manage projects), Trello and Workfront. These are the tools I have enjoyed, grasped very quickly and don't have many complaints. One that I would like to try out is Monday.com, I have seen a lot of ads and heard a lot of good things about it.

Thank you 😊 you can describe a situation from a previous job even if it wasn’t a project management role or could be a personal experience but the example should involve planning, coordination and achieving a goal. It’s all about demonstrating your leadership skills, problem solving, teamwork and communication skills.

Hey Sam, thanks so much! For me, I had around 4x years in total of Events and Account Management experience before I got my first freelance PM role. If you have experience in any of your roles where you have managed some kind of project from start to finish and have a few years under your belt then that is a good start

Hey there, I would say look at the current experience you have in previous jobs or any volunteer work that involve you helping to deliver something of value. You may not have led but you may have assisted in the process, this is still valid experience. Update and tailor your CV to reflect the key skills of a project manager. You may need to start off in a similar role such as project coordinator, project assistant or account manager etc I began my journey in Events then went into account management before diving into project management, essentially I was able to utilise my experience in both sectors to get into project management, so you can definitely do the same. Often freelancers can make more money than someone perm in the same role as they pay less taxes and can charge a premium day rate. In a perm position you could be on a annual salary of 70k which is good but paying 20k a year in taxes and NI. Freelancers can pay much less tax (especially if outside IR35). However, freelancers do ideally need to be getting consistent work in order to take advantage of their premium rate.

I tend to use both terms interchangeably, however the main clear cut exception are those contract roles where you are paid a fixed salary for working a fixed duration. These are usually advertised as a fixed term contract (I don't apply for these types of roles as you are more like an employee). So usually the main difference is the employment status but most companies are pretty clear when outlining roles as a 'fixed term contract', as they are often advertised with a salary. That's great news, well done! Every role and PM sector is different, if you're a PM in IT then some of the common lingo will be different to being a PM in gaming for example. If I were you, I would ask my line manager if there is some kind of on-boarding doc which lists out a typical project lifecycle (which i'd like to think most companies have) and if they don't have one then who ever is training / onboarding you - write down everything they say so you can digest the process. Take lots of notes. Also, ask if you can shadow another PM on a project and study everything they do, how they lead meetings, how they communicate with the project team etc this will give you a good understanding of how to manage comms effectively yourself. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions, whether that be to your line manager or another more senior PM, just ask away. Even now, I am always asking questions if I am unsure of something, you will be expected to ask questions especially as a newbie so go for it. If you do make a mistake (which everyone does) don't beat yourself up about it, just learn from it so you avoid that same mistake again. Hope that help x

Recruiters have been the most useful in helping me get clients. They do the hard work for me. You can also use sites like Fiverr / Upwork for freelance gigs. I also like to use LinkedIn as most companies use it and you can connect directly with the hiring managers and recruiters. I am also PRINCE2 certified.

You could offer your services on Fiverr for a small fee or say its volunteer work

Aww bless you! Thanks for your comment so sorry I have taken forever to reply. Of course you can - you just need to make sure your accountant is on top of it all, but yes I have worked both outside IR35 and inside in a year. I think if I was consistently working inside IR35 or had a perm job I would be more inclined to close my Ltd company as certain tax documents would still need to be legally filed annually.
