We are Kerry & Dorie, a keen amateur allotmenteer and a 9 year old miniature schnauzer living and growing in Leicestershire. We have a kitchen garden and (sort of) food forest front garden, which I started cultivating in 2021. In Dec 2022 we took on a full-size allotment plot and at the end of 2024 we moved to a new plot with a polytunnel.
Join us week by week as I try to figure out how to best 'grow your own' in the home garden and on the plot as a relative beginner. Expect plenty of planting, harvesting, composting and yapping - me and the dog! I also do a bit of cooking, fermenting, hiking, and foraging. Look out for my brother-in-law, Mark, who is my plot neighbour, as well as my cousin, Becky, who also has a plot on site.

Long vlog warning! I'm back on form and going all out with a proper vloggy vlog - my first 'a day in the life'! And we are in all my growing spaces - the front room germination station, the back vegetable garden, the front garden food forest and of course the allotment plot. Plus the kitchen as I make meals with my stored produce from last year's harvests. There's loads on my to do list. Expect chillis, luffas, artichokes, roses, fruit tree guilds and lots more. Mark gets hold of the camera again so there's some #markcam to enjoy too.

Hi Kerry this is what my sitting room window usually looks like every year. Not this year as I not at home. My daughter had a stroke at 39 and has lost the use of her left hand side so needs help 24/7 so I am only one that can stay. So my plot is mostly on hold my hubby stanley does a bit but I do all the sowing planting etc he does all the tidying and heavy work. I am missing it all terribly I am hoping to get a regular break soon so I can go to plot. But I can’t sow here so I think I will be buying plants mostly. I have bought one of thos mini greenhouses so once the weather is warmer I can put some seeds outside here. But watching you is lovely

No tho that would be good. I think the idea is you eat young so they don't need to grow too high.
Suppose it’s difficult to find a dry time to work the soil there. Ground up leaves worked into clay soil help break it up. Lol, I would add a ton of perlite and French drains. My in-laws had clay soil and it’s not easy to work with. Lol, when the septic was replaced we were reseeding the lawn and the clay built up on our boots and they felt like 10Lbs each.😂. It holds nutrients and water, but was cement if it dried out and pulling weeds 🙄. I grew up with sandy soil and do prefer it. I had some topsoil delivered once and it was more clay like so I use that for brassicas as they like heavy soil.
And still it so SO SO much better than the old plot!! Yes I was collecting leaves over the autumn. I want to do a big compost order but it's tricky now that I have an off road plot...
Hello Kerry, You had a very productive day in the garden, indoors and on your plot. Your handwriting...well, we won't talk about 😂😂😂 I have got a question for you, tho. I want to grow oca for the first time this year and would like to know if you have to chit the tubers or if you can put them in the ground without chitting. ❤
Hi Siggi. You can do either. I tend to chit because it's saved seed but when I bought new tubers I just planted direct and it was fine - like potatoes, either way will work. You can also choose to pot up undercover and then plant out or sow direct. I've never had any problems sowing direct. Good luck 🤗

Yes or just pull them out root and all (I line with bamboo kitchen paper). It is a funky feature.

Hi Kerry. Well that was a very productive day: well done indeed. Your stew looked delicious - I bet you enjoyed that 🙂. I've read a few times that when putting woodchip around new fruit trees it's adviseable to pull the mulch away from the trunk - just to avoid the wet mulch touching the trunk that might encourage mildew etc. I've no idea if it's true - and maybe it's not a problem for yours as the trees are well established. Enjoyed watching your busy day 🙂
Thank you Steven. I've heard that too and I did natter about it when filming but must have cut that out! I'll keep an eye - it's not too deep a mulch and my trees in the home garden haven't bothered about the bark around them (she says... 👀)

@@dogontheplot Hopefully the envelope has arrived safely. Those Aunt Molly's are a ground cherry. Similar to cape gooseberries, but they are more pineapple with hint of tomato and sweeter. Promise you'll still like them even though you won't get that stronger sour punch of the cape gooseberry.🥰

Too early in the Pacific Northwest to plant seeds even in the green house. We are getting late snow and I learned last year not to get ahead of myself. I AM eyeing that broad-fork. LOL! Thank you. g

Oh yes, go for it - they are shallow rooted so don't tend to compete. Mark's questions (there were a lot more! I had to edit down lol) made me realise I should have more of a plan of which plants I want to introduce.

Aw thank you Marilyn. Last year my big window got covered up by the scaffolding for the roof and blocked a lot of light, so very thankful for it this year. Grow lights are just amazon cheapies - Rach @ourallotmentplots has a link in her latest video to the ones that I bought.

Aw thank you Wendy! The pair of them were just barky barky on the plot, so walked them and had to drop Ben back home, which he was more than happy about. He's only a year older than Dorie but has always been a grumpy bum🤣🤣

I think I'm going to make teh top corner nearest to my door a tiny fruit guild I've seen on insta that Tesco is selling bare root fruit bushes for 2 50 so I'm guessing other shops will have them as well and it ll fit well into the corner I think with some of the house bricks in a semi-circle around it and fill it with strawberry babies underneath and some flowers cant wait plus its supper sunny today so i ll crack on n dig more lol

I’ve done my to do list today - weed brassica bed, put last of wood chip on final path, check greenhouse veg and seedlings are watered.
