Video Game Piracy: The Truth
Video Game Piracy is a topic in the video game industry that often either gets overlooked or only presented from one side of a bigger picture. With Digital Media taking over and Physical Media slowly going away, the landscape of the whole situation changes.

China should be the least of your worries into concern of the gaming industry you should be more afraid of DEI and black rock destroying the gaming industry including these woke activists who have infested the gaming industry by pushing their political agendas on their consumers. I don't feel bad for these Western companies they chose to go that route not China they chose the higher activists for their companies they chose to destroy their companies they chose to spit in the face of their fan base and consumers they chose to pump out garbage that nobody wanted. If a chinese video game like black myth Wukong won the hearts of Western gamers that just shows you got the West does not know how to make video games anymore and they have lost.

ive seen i video that explains that legally speaking, pirating a game isnt stealing its actually copyright issue since its digital and you dont have a physical value to it. So if it isnt stealing then question is if one should feel bad about copyright abuse and in that regard the whole conversation need to be looked from a different angle. im willing to buy games if they worth it, but like CDPR once said pirate our game and if you like it then buy it. After Final Fantasy XV (where none of the footage from trailers and other adds where in the game or heavily changed) i realized that the big Companies screw us over so im cautious. And the devs arent some poor victims, they choose to work and make games like that without letting the buyer know therefore they are scammers and dont get any sympathy from me.

@Shimazaki-V I'm not sure how much devs have the final say over things like drm being included in their games and they certainly do not have a say over what material gets used for marketing and promo so our opinions differ when it comes to most of the devs I think. I, however, fully agree that shady practices from game companies and things going more and more digital is part of the issues. I wish all the companies had the same mentality as cdpr!

I see piracy as a necessary evil in cases were games are no longer legally available or if there only being resold on Ebay by Jimbob the scammer for crazy prices. People should not have to pay 100$+ just to play a game from their childhood or just to experience games of the past, especially since none of that money is going to the devs anyway.

If everyone still drove their first car, there would be no automobile industry. There is no capitalism without obsolescence. Stuff needs to break so people can earn money by creating new stuff. In 10 years from now, there will be 1 billion additional games on the market for every company and indie developer to compete against. As a developer, I want the old stuff to disappear. Not the Ataris, Segas and Commodores, those aren't relevant. The PC market is, and you can still buy and run 25 year old titles on a modern PC. As a user and gamer, I fully support game preservation. But I wonder where games worthy of preservation will come from in a few years from now.

@@Ragepatty Yes, 1 billion is probably an exaggeration. If you bought a game you should own it and be able to play it forever, if that is possible. MMOs generally sell licenses and subscriptions, not ownership. I see those like going to the cinema, you don't own the theatre nor the movie. Problem is the inflation of games, something we never had because no system ever lived as long as the x86 PC. The whole era of the home computers lasted for about 15 years, and processor architectures changed every 5 years. We don't have this kind of progress anymore and there's no urgent need for people to upgrade.

I think the problem with metaphors and comparisons in general, is that unlike music and movies/TVshows, does can realy on just add-revenue, subscriptions to a certain degree and purchasing rights (like showing a Coca-cola on a song from The Beattles in set movie, etc). Video Games are so hard, expensive and tecnical to an academic level to make that it ends up in a position were the raw sell is the only viable way it has to be profitable. A lot of people who has the knoledge to make video games dont necessaraly know how to make a "good" game or a game that can sell because that is as subjective as it is pure luck factor. + how bad the paychack can be when the game is force to reach certain numbers to secure end of the year bonuses, and when thoes objectives arent meet, it makes it all feel like a waste of time that could be spended on an Intel or HP cube were you know your programing skills will be the only thing that separetes you from financial stability. I can tell for experience, I try the programing carrier and its so hard to the point of questioning if it is worthed to spend all thoes years on a job that now days we all know how bad it is with its crunch culture and overall lack of opportunities to make whatever your dream game is when your not someone like Hideo Kojima or at least Cory Barlog, and thats at this moment in time, we use to have more rockstars like Cliffy B, John Carmack and even David Jaffe and right now they couldnt be more far from video game development and for a fair reason when you take all this into consideration. That just speaks volumes of how bad game development is, if you are someone who "dreams an ambitions aside" want to have quality of life. With that being said: I have nothing against Piracy when we are talking about abbandon-ware, like some Pokemon games from the GBA and DS that cant be buy even in eShop. But everything else... As someone who know how insane the proffesion is, I know I would feel terreble if someone steal my hard-work that easely. without any remorse, and I dont want anybody to do that to me, so I dont do it. On the argument of "they are ritch so who cares" Im like: did they do something illegal? did they stole from you? and even if so, does that give you the right to steal? And just to be clear on another point: If you hate a company so mutch, even when they do good games, wouldnt make more sense if you CUT all relations with that company at all cost? Thats what I do and it feels great to not even care about games from people I dont want to even notice their existance. So why even steal, from people you dont like?! And no you cant separete the Author all the time, some times its better to stay away. Spetially in todays days when we have over abbundance of games to choose from to keep this mentality that "theres nothing to play" wich is simply not true, not having anything "trending to play while being part of the temporally conversation and be seen on streams" is a completelly different thing.

Also digital has been nice not only to stay home but not having to disc swap is nice too especially when streaming a TV series since you don't have to get up to eject the disc. Also physical games can sometimes be cheaper than digital ones which plays a factor as well. It's a preference but I feel like keeping physical games should be an option so people can decide for themselves and not leave it up to people selling them.

The decline of video games as a resilient, artistic medium feels like a multi-layered "death," driven by several factors: 1. Death of the Art Form: Many modern games prioritize profit over creative integrity, sidelining the artistic vision that once defined the industry. This shift has led to more formulaic, risk-averse titles that lack the depth and originality of earlier eras. 2. Death of Physical Media: Physical copies of games are rarely complete today. Even when you buy a disc or cartridge, crucial parts of the game (like patches or entire segments) often require online downloads, making physical media feel like a placeholder rather than a fully owned product. 3. Loss of Digital Ownership: Many digital storefronts impose restrictive DRM (Digital Rights Management) systems, which severely limit what you can do with your purchases. You might lose access to a game if the platform decides to remove it, effectively erasing your ownership. 4. End of Standalone Gaming Systems: The gaming industry is shifting towards cloud-based streaming services, where gamers access titles through streaming rather than traditional consoles or PC downloads. In this future, you’re not buying hardware or software but a temporary subscription, leaving control firmly in the hands of service providers. 5. Disappearance of Old Games and Media Decay: Physical media degrades over time, and older games are at risk of vanishing. Without preservation, titles from previous decades may be lost permanently due to deteriorating discs and tapes. 6. Anti-Cheat Software and Server Shutdowns: Online DRM checks and anti-cheat software add further hurdles, while server shutdowns often mean that many games eventually become unplayable, especially those reliant on online elements. --- Potential Solutions One potential way to preserve games is by creating multiple backup formats, such as storing games on multi-layer Blu-rays or dedicated SSDs. Circumventing DRM checks, though technically challenging and legally questionable, is another consideration for personal backups. Although some applications can bypass online checks for platforms like Steam, their quality varies, and most still don’t offer seamless offline experiences. For now, physical media and digital distribution sites like Good Old Games (GOG) offer the best hopes for reliable access. But true change may require global collective action. Until then, finding workarounds like private servers, community-supported mods, or even backups through hacks or cracks might be necessary to keep these games alive. In the end, the best way forward might be a mix of advocacy for better consumer rights, community preservation efforts, and technological solutions. Without some degree of protest and collective effort, gaming’s future might be more controlled and constrained, rather than free and accessible. When it comes to accessing both physical and digital media, piracy-though legally and ethically complex-often provides a smoother, more complete user experience. Pirated versions frequently bypass DRM, granting users more freedom and offline access, and often come without the intrusive anti-cheat and licensing checks that can disrupt gameplay. Remarkably, this applies not just to digital media but even to physical goods; pirated versions or unauthorized modifications can improve performance, access, or functionality, allowing users to enjoy a "full" product experience, one that is sometimes superior to what paying customers receive. This paradox reflects a key frustration in media ownership today: even legitimate purchases often come with limitations that do not affect pirated versions. For instance, while physical game copies are increasingly missing content that must be downloaded, pirated editions are often complete, delivering a cohesive and reliable experience without dependency on online access.

True story: The day I got my steam account hacked/ the day I got scammed I almost lost everything including my games. I've wasted over 4,500 bucks but I managed to get that money back, However I've realized steam is also not trustworthy as well when it comes to digital games. I'm not saying Steam is awful Don't get me wrong, They are always Superior when it comes to PC gaming. However nowadays, I'm pretty sure you've heard of the "I accidentally reported you scam" situation. Sadly not everyone knows about it and almost a bunch of people get their accounts lost or hacked into. Once your Steam account gets hacked all of your games will be gone as well, That event made me appreciate physical games a whole lot more.

I can't see how video gaming streaming will ever work. You will be paying double or triple for your internet and a lot of internet providers have data caps that you will easily blow through. Video game streaming uses a lot more data especially if you're streaming games at 4K and not everyone has access to fast internet.

That's a good point! Based on how Sony locked out how many countries with their pc games? By needing a Sony account that wasn't available in moat countries, lol, so it wouldn't surprise me, but you're right there will likely always be a way for now to atleast store the games you play on your "console" whatever that happens to be in the future.

Im speaking for me: I already come into terms that this is the final generation with physical format (70% sure). Onces its gone; I’ll be moving to GaaS F2P land. And I dont feel bad about it, in so many ways I believe tradicional gaming fullfill its cycle and all the games that will be consider the best, were allready been made and now we are in full auto-pilot into redundancy “Dark Souls 4+5+6 = Elden Ring”. And it dosnt have to be a bad thing. I have in my collection most of my fave games of all time and long ago my top 40 bearly gets aditions and top 10 its 100% stank. But in my opinion that explains volumes on how far we went into this path. Our time its coming to an end, but Gen Alpha and Beta seem to enjoy what they have with Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft. As long everybody has something to enjoy, everything will be fine. I dont understan does games, but I do enjoy Brawlhalla, Rocket League and The Fisrt Descendant, stuff 8 years ago necer see myself wanting to play. And that good.

Meh im not too worried about it honestly. Growing up my parents where very stricked on what games i was allowed to play. So games like ratchet and clank, or jack and daxter where my type of games growing up. I only started to play adult games when i was 19 (unlike my school friends who where playing 18 rated games at a much younger age). Anyway the point is. For me personally there a lot of old content ive never played. I just finished playing far cry 3 (boy that ending was ........something) and GTA V. If games go all digital ill just play older games. Ive got generations of games to catch up on. What really got my hyped for new consoles was just the new games that would come with it. But nost games nowadays of online (sometimes pvp) based games. And its so boring.
