    Get a globe and some string, stretching it from, say, LAX to Japan. Notice that the shortest (least fuel used) is a path going north from LAX. So, to answer the statement in the title - it's cost.

    In 1987, my wife and I flew back from Germany on Delta Airlines. Our flight from Atlanta to Kansas City was delayed because of the weather. After a couple of hours, an ancient pilot strolled through the boarding area and announced, "I'm going to Kansas City. Is anybody going with me?" When we landed, it was literally in a blizzard. I couldn't even see the ground until seconds before touching down. The weather was so bad that we couldn't make the trip from KC to Lawrence, opting instead for a hotel room. I was in awe of the pilot that landed in weather we dared not drive in. Mind you, this was in the days before GPS and auto land.

      That's an incredible story! The skill and confidence of pilots in those days, especially in such challenging conditions, is truly remarkable. It must have been quite an adventure for you and your wife. Thanks for sharing this fascinating experience!

    Absolute crap. When I retired after 50 years as an aircraft engineer working in the airline industry, only one a/c used a fluid for deicing. The Douglas DC-3 designed in the 1930's. For props only. Most passenger a/c today use engine bleed air for anti-ice protection. I am not licenced to quote on the B787, but I believe it uses electric anti-ice. All modern prop a/c use electrically heated cuffs on the blade roots. Windshields are also electrically heated. A brilliant feature of the Rolls Royce RB211 that powered some variants of Boeings's 747 was a small rubber tip on the intake spinner. If ice tried to form, it would cause the tip to vibrate and shed the ice. Please do your research from qualified and proven sites.

    • @explore_aviation
      @explore_aviation หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your insights, Ross! I appreciate your extensive experience and detailed information on the topic. You're right; modern aircraft typically use engine bleed air and electrically heated components for anti-icing. The evolution from fluid de-icing to these advanced systems highlights the advancements in aviation technology. I'll make sure to verify and incorporate accurate and up-to-date information in future videos. Your feedback is invaluable!

    Planes crisscross the Pacific daily from and to the US west coast as well as from and to South America. Latham (Chilean airline) fly daily from and to Santiago to and from Auckland. More and more aircrafts fly entirely above water for the US west coast to the far-east, S.E Asia and Oceania. Since sanctions have been applied to Russia in February 2022 American, Canadian and European registered aircrafts are not allowed to fly over the Russian federation airspace.

    They have not seen Radar 24 or Flightaware. Many flights do cross the Pacific. Newer types of aircraft can make it across. Sure it's a shorter route, the great circle. But to stay out of bad weather, flying longer with newer fuel efficient engines have no problems. ETOPS Back in the day, you fly near the coast because of fuel. Strong head winds and storms across the North Pacific. Burning more fuel. With Newer eco engines, you can cross the Pacific.

    So much BS in this video. "Isolation and human factors" ? where the hell did you dream that up from? Flying great circle routes usually means greater fuel and time savings but this is not always the case, particularly over the Pacific Ocean. For example, the great circle routs from LAX to SIN would go northwest initially up towards Alaska and then southwest towards Japan then on to SIN. However, prevailing wind patterns mean that a route more westerly from LAX, passing north of Hawaii, south of Midway, north of Gaum and on to Jomalik in the Philippines then on to SIN although about 600 NM further is much faster because tailwinds are present for all but the final couple of hours of the flight. Flying the opposite route, SIN to LAX flights often take advantage of the North Paciific Jetstream leaving the great circle route around Tokyo and flying east. I have flown both of these routes many times.
