Speedplay pedal overhaul | Replace bearings | Replace Axle
Step by step guide on replacing the axle (you could also upgrade to titanium axles) and all bearings on worn Speedplay pedals with a fair amount of play.
These pedals had done well over 20,000 miles with a lot of wet riding. Despite regular greasing they still needed some attention.
I paid around £11 for the replacement bearings and £15 for replacement axles on eBay - usually a few around from people swapping out to titanium axles. This tutorial would apply to upgrading to titanium axles too - I couldn't get hold of any when I completed this overhaul, without waiting for weeks for them to come from China - and I had the Fred Whitton Sportive imminent!
I got a set of stainless bearings here:

How to replace the Di2 battery (DN110) in a Canyon Endurace
มุมมอง 63K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Di2 battery on my Canyon Endurace road bike was no longer holding its charge after around two and half years and roughly 13000 miles. The Shimano DN110 battery is usually held in the seatpost, but this bike has Canyon’s VCLS seatpost with a leaf spring design so that’s not an option. Instead it’s held in the downtube, just above the bottom bracket. Awkwardly, you have to remove at least one...
Pairing your Apple Watch as a heart rate monitor in Zwift
มุมมอง 94K4 ปีที่แล้ว
For the most reliable and accurate heart rate measurements in Zwift, you’re better off pairing a heart rate strap. I use a Wahoo TickrX which works over Bluetooth and ANT . But if you have an Apple Watch it is possible to use that instead. This is handy if you don’t have a heart rate strap or just don’t have one to hand, or possibly you find the heart rate strap uncomfortable around your chest ...

Replacing bearings in a Powertap G3 hub and its freehub
มุมมอง 17K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Please note, there is no issue changing out the bearings in the freehub, but if you replace the bearings in the G3 hub itself, the hub may need re-calibrating according to Powertap. Although I've done it a couple of times and checked before and after using the weights method below, and against my Stages power meter and a Wahoo Kickr and not had a problem. If you do want a re-calibration, cyclin...
Custom phone holder for Garmin mount for Zwift, TrainerRoad etc
มุมมอง 20K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Based on this article on TrainerRoad: blog.trainerroad.com/custom-phone-mount/ All you need is a hard-backed phone case and a male Garmin mount. I'm using this: amzn.to/2vvp2Aa (UK) amzn.to/2HeAaH7 (US) - appears to be more expensive in the US so you might want to check Ebay. It should only cost a few dollars. Replacing pivot bearings on an Orange Five (2015)

Does anyone know which screws are used to hold the battery bracket in place? Recently lost one...
En la canyon ultimate cf sl8 Di2 es más fácil , el pedalier es de rosca no botton bracket
Very useful video cheers mate.
Any tips for removing that retaining ring for the needle bearing? Mine spins pretty easily and i don't have anything thin and strong to get behind it to get it started. I have serviced zeroes before and got the rings off. I bought another pair of pedals off ebay and there is not enough dirt or corrosion to make the job easy.
Did not work for me…Apple Watch did not show up on zwift heart rate monitor
Yep! These Ball Bearing issues with my Canyon are the gift that keeps on giving. After replacing the bearings on my bottom bracket, I now have some Headset Bearing issues. At least the bottom bracket bearings were readily available. The top bearing has seized. Canyon does not have any headset bearings for the Grizle and no one in the US seems to have them either. They have a very specific angle on the top bearing that no other manufacturer seems to use. I now must order them from Germany and the shipping is almost as much as the bearings. I have owned very many bikes and none of them had this many bearing related issues.
Hi. Sending a bottle at sea. My red rubber ring (same as in your video) is broken. Any clue where to source one? Understand Cycleops has been bought by Sram, and powertaps are discontinued. Any help is appreciated. Thx.
I still have my 2014 Orange 5 and have changed the bearings many times so thanks again .
Not for Wahoo, shame
What are the problems while pedaling due to old bearings?
Very nicely explained and shot. Professional. Thank you.
Very helpful, thanks!
Many thanks for the video, very helpful. May anyone know where to source replacement springs for the cleats, or entire cleats for the X-series? There must be many of us that still use the speedplays but run out of cleats. Thanks in advance!
I rode the x series cleats for about 15 years. I replaced many cleats due to the springs wearing flat, and in some cases breaking clean through. A few years ago I finally switched to speedplay zeros. The design is much better and uses a piece of hard steel as the spring mechanism rather than that thin wire. I strongly recommend you do that. Prices of x series cleats are obnoxious on eBay. There are tons of zero cleats and pedals at a much more reasonable price. It is a much better design and I have yet to wear out a cleat. There are still plenty of aftermarket parts available to rebuild speed play zeros too
Thank you!!!!
Perfect…many thanks!
thanks
Nicely done! Not only the maintenance itself but also the presentation in this video, short and on point with a good view of all steps. I have one question though - is it really okay to reuse the NDS Bearing after hammering it out? Doesn't it get damaged? Cheers mate! ✌️
I actually use a tool off Aliexpress for more gently removing these cups now. But since you knocking out the nylon cups rather than the bearings themselves it should be ok. One of my frames went back to Canyon UK for warranty and they reused the BB cups which I did question and they seemed fine with it!
@@TheCyclingMan What is the tool you're using now if you don't mind?

Try Aire Velo Bearings in the UK - they may ship internationally.
Somehow lost my chest strap when traveling. Thanks for the explanation to connect the Apple Watch. Works perfectly for me. It’s even more convenient.
Glad it helped!
do you think it's strong enough to ride outdoors with it?
I wouldn't!
Very late to the party but I've just checked my headset after yesterdays ride and bottom bearing is shot. Note forks were tricky to remove, I had to tap out with nylon hammer on steering tube and bottom bearing was stuck on crown race. When I levered(carefully) the bearing off it came apart. I was able to put back together so I can use bike until new bearing arrives. Note I was able to order just bottom bearing from Aire Velo and it cost £12.50 plus delivery so not too bad. Design though is crazy on Canyons, I looked at your other video for replacing Di2 battery in seat post. Absolutely ridiculous you need to remove bottom bracket to access!
Glad you're sorted but yes not a great design!
Hi, where did bought your Bearing Pressfit Tool! Thanks👍
In the UK search for RRP Bearing Press.
3 years later and Zwift still makes it incredibly complicated to use your Apple Watch. Thanks for the video, got it working for my ride earlier and it worked great.
Yes - I'd love them to improve this!
You are a Boss! Finally got it!
Great!
Thanks for this video. It is the only one I’ve found for my very same problem!
Glad it helped!
Still works. Great information
Thanks - although I think with the latest update Zwift have broken this!
Hi, I know this is a few years after your video but hopefully you are still reading comments. My Endurace has 14000miles and I'm getting around 500 miles per charge so OK. However I can only think as time goes on it'll decrease. My question is do you really have to remove a bottom bracket cup to get battery out? Is there no way battery will be accessible without doing this? Thanks. Edit : I just checked by removing the little cover at bottom and yep I've answered my own question! What a crap design!
Sorry for late reply - yes you do as you've already discovered!
@lingMan OK, the time has come so I've done it. Removed old one and just installed new battery although it seems it arrived completely flat so I'm having to charge it before I reassemble bottom bracket and cranks etc just to make sure it works. I see someone else asked this but I was also wondering about using grease on shell. I just contacted Canyon and they said quote "some bike shops use Loctite but not grease". Well I'm definitely not using Loctite as be a nightmare to remove again! I think I'll use thin smear of grease just to aid pushing in. Oh err missus. Anyway, brilliant video so many thanks.
What a piss poor design.
Yep I agree!
I'm not sure I would have bought my Canyon if I had known that the battery was where it was...Very few bikes shops in my area and it looks like quite the DIY job with specialized tools. Fingers crossed that my battery lasts many years
I think they put it there because of the custom seat post - but yes very annoying!
What model year is your Endurace bike? I'm not sure if my Endurace from 2019 has a Shimano BT-DN100 battery or not and I really want to add a W-WU111 or EW-WU101 wireless unit to my bike. But I would like to not have to remove my BB just to check the model of my battery...
Mine is a 2017 model.
Thanks for the answer. If anyone else is in the same situation and find this comment, I was fully able to add the wireless Di2 unit to my bike without needing to replace the battery
@@Maxwaehrenslooking allover the internet for this
@@ejbrg5234glad someone could use this 👍
@@ejbrg5234 you can pull on the cables once you remove the cover at the bottom. The hole is big enough to pull the cables through and connect the EW-WU111. Just did it last week on my 2019 endurace.
Which sadist designed that monstrosity? Remove the pressfit BB to access the Di2 battery?
Probably the same one who has designed the integrated brake hoses in a scott foil..
Yep - ridiculous!
too fast
Try using the TH-cam playback controls to slow the video down if it's too quick for you.
Amazing
Thanks!
what is that gray cylinder and where to get it from online (which the wheel hub rest on it when removing the freehub spacers)? what is ratchet removal tool? can relink the removal again as the product page is not found. thanks
That's the Hope Hub Support Tool - super useful and not expensive! Search eBay for DT Swiss Ratchet Removal.
Can you measure the rod size in the RapidRacerProducts press?
IIRC it's M8 but will check next time I have the set out.
bro you are a beast in bike maintenance 👍🏻
Thank you!
Are you not afraid, that the Phone "jumps" out of the Case?
This is only really for turbo use!
What is with the yoyo music? Leave it quiet in the background. Its a tutorial video with verbal help not a rave.
I'm not sure what the music is - it's a while since I made that video.
Any chance to do this tutorial for the fron wheel? I have no idea how to get the bearings out since the axle is flush with the inner bearing race on both sides...
Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the late reply! I don't have these wheels any more unfortunately.
@@TheCyclingMan Actually solved it - there is a tool from Dt Swiss that sits in the axle and that can be used to knock the bearing and axle out on the other side. There are 3D files of this tool on thingiverse for 3D printing
@@bastisk8 Glad you're sorted! Sorry for the late reply - this isn't my main channel so don't always see the notifications!
The only thing I'd still like to know after watching this video is why you preferred to use the huge Unior 1680/4 tool to press in the cups ( 02:33 ), although its spindle doesn't fit the 90.3 bushings, and the 90.3 bushings would make it easier, as you mention in the video. Why didn't you use your RRP bearing press tool with the 90.3 bushings then? Nevertheless, it's a fantastic video, straight to the point and super informative! That's as cool as cucumber!
I have used both methods interchangeably! But you're right probably better using the bushings with the RRP tool - or any Park headset / BB press tool - they have a thinner spindle so work fine with the bushings.
Which way round does the magnet go onto the axle? It attracts metal just the same both ways round. If however it's making contact with another magnet (inside the sealed part of the hub) then it probably will matter which way round it is. Kicking myself for not taking it off more carefully,
Sorry I really can't remember and I don't have the wheels any more. IRRC I had to check and flip it around as needed.
@@TheCyclingMan Thanks very much for getting back to me. It's a 50:50! - as you say not the end of the world to knock the axle out again if needed.
All went fine and thanks for the excellent video. Some comments that might come in handy for others. I bought a much cheaper bearing press set with a full range of bearing size adaptors. (cost about £39) It was fine but.. The hub drive side 6902 needs the bearing press to go over the axle. The hole in my cheaper kit was too narrow to do that. I got round it by finding a metal tube of the right diameter to do the pressing. A long spark plug socket of the right diameter did fine. I also removed the magnet from the axle and failed to note which way round it went. I didn't know if the polarity of the magnet mattered or not. I now know it doesnt, so don't worry about that. Thanks again Cycling Man.
Great walk through. Thank you!
No problem glad it helped!
Brilliant explanation, thank you. Could not find this on a Zwift forum so you saved the day!
That's great glad it helped!
wow it worked. it's something of a workaround
A bit convoluted but it works!
Everything is covered by your hands, camera to far.
There's also my commentary!
Very useful and efficient
Glad glad it helped!
Shame you can’t use the watch to turn, give rideons etc.
Yes that'd be useful.
I ran into an issue with method 2, which appeared to be when I was using my AirPods at the same time, the watch wouldn’t connect. Disconnected the AirPods and viola. Thanks for the informative video, I’d have been stuck otherwise and doubted the method.
Good to know thanks.
Very clear and informative video, thanks very much for going to the effort of filming the process! I'd just add one thing, that Shimano recommend the BB cups are pressed in dry to carbon frames although ofc it's personal preference to follow this.
Yes they do but I worry enough about hammering out these cups even with grease! Case in point - I've just had a frame warrantied after removing a PF BB took part of the BB shell with it!
Thanks a lot. great video!!
No problem glad it helped!
