I've always wondered why the term singer/songwriter seemed reserved for white, male (except for Joni and Carole,) guitarists. Two of the most acclaimed singer/songwriters of the time were piànists; Elton John and Stevie Wonder, are never mentioned in videos like this. Then there's Bill Withers, Gil Scot-Heron, Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman, etc. Any insights?
@trentrevis2758 I said what I said. I also talked about the primary instrument of the songwriter, but you didn't get squeamish about that part. Race and gender have always been factors in U.S. commercial music, regardless of knee-jerk negative reactions to the mention of it. If this upsets you, I can't help that.
@@trentrevis2758 I reacted to the thousandth time I've read someone's "why do you people always bring race into it", when race, gender, etc., are relevant factors. If that wasn't where you were coming from, my apologies. If it was, harshness was what I intended.
A teenage Jackson Browne wrote 'These Days', recorded by Nico and is an incredible song. If you've not listened to it, check it out! No mentions of Harry Chapin or Melanie Safka??!! What's up with that nonsense??!!
I see it as return to folk music after the excess of Sgt Pepper and psychodelic music. After trance music , there was a return to roots music. Go to an extreme and culture flipped.
If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot is an underrated masterpiece from the early 70's .
💯
Agree wholeheartedly 💯%
Tis is absolutely great! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!! Appreciate the positive feedback!
Late eighties it came back again with tracey chapman, suzanne vega, john hiatt, crowded house, tanita tikaram, bonnie raitt.....
Rock/hard rock existed and was popular throughout the entire singer songwriter period.
Of course, Carol King was a song writer long before she started singing professionally.
A singer/songwriter that deserves more attention is Tom Robinson just listen to war baby
Environmental sustainability was replaced in the 70's by environmental cocaineability, and the dream was over.
Great but why is the word folk avoided?
@@Sharkwhisperer it wasn’t purposely avoided. Just took more broader approach.
The video is about singer songwriters not collegiate folk revivalists.
I Wanna Be Sedated is confessional.

@@elainewaller-rose9707 It wasn't about race and gender. It was about a style of music.

@@elainewaller-rose9707 I'm not upset or squeamish. I was very calm and at peace when I wrote that. I don't know why you're reacting so harshly.

Love Browne’s ‘These Days’. But so sad I can hardly bare it. Chapin is in there btw.

Gee. I didn’t know Bob Dylan was left-handed? 😂
