How I modified my Kelly Kettle Scout and turned it into an even better stove
A simple modification idea to the Kelly Kettle.
On this video I have a first test burn with my Kelly Kettle Scout, after making a modification to the base of the stove. I wanted to see if my idea helped with the performance of the stove, to see how clean it burned and to see how fast it can bring water to the boil.
With this mod and the increase in airflow it's turned an already great stove into an amazing stove.

    Not bad makes it more ballanced i guess. I modified the kettles chimney a little, stop getting covered in smoke and holds on to exhaust heat a bit longer.. basically a tin can over the stack with slot in one side, so you can direct it away from you, so you dont get covered in smoke, wofks quite well. I have the kelly scout too, i use spirit burner to, that work well also, take a bit longer but works fine, trangia type.

    sorry while adding more ventilation will make it burn faster the size of your wood is all wrong, you have so much wood left after the boil you could cook a meal too, its meant for small twigs and minimal burn to boil water.

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there, thanks for watching and leaving a comment it's much appreciated. I completely understand what you are saying and agree. Great point regarding the wood I used and having wood left over, enough to cook on. Normally that's what I would be doing, probably cooking lunch. My main reason for the mod was for exactly that. The previous time I used it the material I had at hand was slightly damp. I had no breeze making for a difficult burn. On this occasion I used the same twigs I gathered the previous week and again no breeze and the stove burned brilliantly. I got a boil in no time at all and I'd I wanted to cook, I could have done so without working the stove. If I find the wind to be an issue I can carry one of those folding camping stove windbreaks to control things better. I hope this helps explain my method in my madness and thank you once again you raised a valid point 👍👍

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It seemed to burn better this time, than the previous week. I understand smaller twigs are supposed to be used, I thought I would try and make it more specific to my needs. More so as a hobo stove rather than just using the kettle. I know on the video I only boiled water, but it was just to test how the mod performs. My first impression is I'm happy with it, it done what I hoped. Thanks for taking your time to leave a comment it's much appreciated 👍

    I’d like to see a controlled experiment test video of an unmodified base vs the modified, with boil times and smoke comparison video clips. I’m curious if the extra holes help or hurt performance in the wind and cold.

    • @MsIguanodon
      @MsIguanodon วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have tried this. Adding holes will give slower boiling times. But will give less smoke when using the hobostove.

      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. That's a great idea, I would like to see that also. I'll see what I can do, I've a friend with the same stove. So should be able to arrange something. I must admit it got a better burn this time than the previous one, if the wind is an issue I can always carry one of those stove windbreaks. Or if it turns out the mod was a bad decision I could just buy a new base. Thanks again it's much appreciated 👍

    It will also now need a lot more fuel as it has the extra air. I like the Kelly as it only uses a very small amount of twigs to boil the water and when using the hobo stove top, you can to an extent regulate the heat by turning the hole into the wind or away from it But I guess that where you are, wood wont be a problem and I guess it will also make it lighter 🙂

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Lee, thanks for watching and commenting buddy I appreciate that. I found it to burn better on this occasion than in the previous video. In my last video, I had to work the stove, it seemed to burn at the hole but struggle at the opposite side. Yeah, it could burn faster now, but for me that will be better for cooking, plus I could always carry a windbreak to control that better. Also as you mentioned I shouldn't have a shortage of wood thanks again buddy appreciate it 👍

They are great value for money. Other than the plates that come with this set we have some white enamel ones. They are great too, made by a company called Falcon. We have mugs to match also. If it's stainless steel your looking for I found these ones online. I hope this helps you out. I will say I would recommend the enamel ones we bought ours from the shop Boyes, very reasonable prices. towsure.com/products/summit-stainless-steel-metal-camping-plate-24cm

    Nice setup mate, that's a good purchase. A couple of tips: 1- Next time try to find trees that are closer together. 4.5m approx. is a good place to start as it will allow you to fully deploy your tarp, and then the hammock under it. More than 5m is too much and your arse will end up touching the ground. 2- The ridgeline of the hammock is adjustable via a whoopie sling, but it seems like yours was a bit too loose, that translates into a very shallow lay (not very comfortable), and the bug net gets overstretched. You should adjust the whoopie sling in order to shorten the hammock. How much? That's ultimately a matter of personal taste but a good place to start is 80 - 83% of the length of the hammock (11ft). Try different ridgeline lengths and find the one you like best. The ridgeline creates a nice natural sag in the hammock, which will then allow you to get on a diagonal much more easily. 3- Don't let Clare get in the hammock with her wellies on 😅.

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for the advice, that makes a lot of sense. Especially regarding the bug net, definitely no wellies in future😂😂😂. Thank you once again I appreciate that 👍👍👍

  • @BurtonOutdoors
    @BurtonOutdoors 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'm so glad you find it comfy so far, Garry. I leave the bug net up all the time as it does keep a bit warmer inside, like a string vest. Remember, foot end is a bit higher than your head end to stop slippage in the night, play a little bit with your internal ridgeline to get the perfect sweet spot... I have mine about half of your tail. I keep my underblanket on all the time, I just purchased a bigger stuffsack to fit it all in... saves bu@@ering about fitting it. Hopefully, you have many comfy sleeps when you dial it in...👍 Appreciate the mention 🙏 Oh and I use the small prusik clips on the internal ridgeline with the bag to put my phone, charger etc in.

    That "organiser for the internal ridgeline" is also the outer bag for the hammock when it is in its stuff sack, Garry. Cinch up the underquilt a tad with the elastics. I don't use the "outrigger" elastics to pull out the hammock sides. I prefer a swing when I climb in for bed. Don't forget,,, diagonal lay for a much flatter lay. Loving the content and just subscribed. Please can you do a video on your equipment, just getting started myself and want to know what’s good. Going to buy that DD 3.5 MC just for day trips, what cord are you using. Could you also do a video of how you set up your tarp? Thanks mate

      Thank you so much and welcome to our channel that means a lot. Yeah by all means I can do videos on my kit and how I setup. That won't be a problem at all. I've a few videos on kit already, great choice in the 3.5 dd tarp, it's a great bit of kit. I'll try and do a tarp setup next weekend, I've been chilling this weekend after a city break in Barcelona so just getting round to catching up on social media. Thank you once again means a lot. Atvb, Garry

    Just the video I was after, was considering buying the 3x3 for my first tarp but the 3.5 would be ideal for my small family. What paracord and ground pegs are you using?

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Brilliant thank you very much for tuning in I appreciate that 🙏. I think the 3.5 is perfect definitely my go-to tarp now. The 3 x 3 is great but the 3.5 is way better. I use 550 Paracord and recently started making jungle knots, they are great. Easy to make, easy to set up and easy to deploy. As for pegs, I'm terrible at forgetting to take them, so often make my own at camp. But when I do remember them I take lightweight pegs I'll add a link. Thank you once again for watching it's much appreciated 👍 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/235662203168?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=fFUkdz09Tt-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=t5s57bJgQkq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

      @@360OutdoorAdventures thanks for much for the link, I’ll buy them now. They gotta be better than the standard ones that come with the DD tarp. I’ll search TH-cam for jungle knots, I found a good video that teaches taut line hitch and prusik so I’ll start practicing. Going to order some 550 para cord for ridge line and twisted bank line for guys and knots 😎

    Looked a bit of a rough walk in, especially with a camping pack on and I bet it was good to get set up. Those pork chops looked amazing and a real canny plateful as well. No beers for me before turning in or I would be on the trot all night. When you left in the morning, anyone walking past later on in the day would not have a clue you had even been there, cheers Alan

      Thanks, Alan, the walk-in isn't too bad without the pack but with it, it's a killer. I think I need to work on my fitness too. The chops were amazing proper pork chops I get them from the butcher in Stanhope. Unless it's a spot like our permission where we can leave a permanent camp, I think it's important to leave as minimal trace as we possibly can. It's a beautiful spot so why let it spoil? I enjoyed this camp I got so much from it. Thanks again buddy appreciate it 👍

    Completely understand about not wanting to leave the hammock in the morning, Garry. We were like that Saturday morning, albeit a bit of a forced situation due to the rain. Them pork chops were king sized. Got me thinking I need to have some at a camp. Lamb chops are a nice choice too aren’t they?! A stunning area there pal. I wish us southerners were more blessed with streams in woodland here. Would allow for a better beer carry in 😁 Great video kind sir. ATB, Tim 👋🏼😉👍🏼

      Thanks for watching Tim I appreciate that 🙏. Mate how amazing is it just to chill in the hammock on a morning and do nothing, it's a great feeling. That rain on your camp that was missing down, I was lucky that spot I set up is really sheltered. The pork chops definitely hit the spot and only 6 quid for them both. Lamb chops are a game changer, I think I might have to get some for my next camp. I do like that spot I camped and the woodland is stunning added bonus is the stream. Especially to be able to take extra beers 😂😂. Thanks again Tim appreciate that buddy great chatting too as always mate 👍

    Nice set up buddy, I see a few similarities with my own kit. i did notice you had 3x metal water bottles, whats the thinking there regarding weight and bulk. Have you ever tried other types of water carry systems, bladders etc

    • @360OutdoorAdventures
      @360OutdoorAdventures หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks buddy I appreciate that 👍👍 with the bottles I think it's down to just liking them. I like the fact they are robust, relatively in expensive, and have a good lifespan and don't taint the water. I have an American military water bottle that seems a similar material to a bladder. It's a great bit of kit but leaves a peculiar taste to the water. Thanks once again for watching and that was a very good question, it's always good to get other people opinion on kit. 👍👍👍
