Hello Darryl, I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. I got into african art 6 months ago when I bought a majestic Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask (I swear this one is different and more beautiful than the many we see being sold on different platforms) and since then I couldn't refrain myself from making different purchases. This is kind interfering with my relationships as my girlfriend is questioning what I'm doing and is not really fond of the pieces. Also I found myself really liking the bakongo art, like Nkisi and I realize that they appearance isnot really welcoming to someone new to African art. I would also love to know about what you think about this specific area as I've never heard you talking about Nkisi Nkondi on this channel and never seen them in your collection. Thank you a lot, I really enjoy your work on here and your collection. Best regards

My first in person experience with our art/artifacts was at the MLK museum. It was during the summer. We had gone on a field trip. Unfortunately a hair got into my mouth and I began making the spitting sounds you would trying to get it out. I was pulled aside by a chaperone and later disciplined with a yard stick when we got back (it was a Christian school my sister went to). Its taken time to get bakc to my roots in full again. But as important as I believe access to historic pieces are as an artist myself I believe it's just as important to support contemporary art and artist who need to eat today. That said if I'm allowed I would like to promote my ig for contemporary Afrikan art.

I am so impressed by your collection. I am 66 and have been collecting for 20 years black art ,I am a black lady from St Lucia. But you're right, most of us don't know our history ❤❤

Why do They collect African and Black art? How do They manage to acquire so much of it? For sure, no tribal African family has benefited.

Lot to unpack here. 31 years in, and no, my collection hasn't affected the relationship with my wife at all. Why? Shoes and Purses. Endless Shoes and Purses. Why do I collect? Because I have an addictive personality. My collection is solely in (confined to) my garage, so unless I'm escorting someone out there, no one who comes into the house ever sees it. And if they did see it I don't care what they think. No, I'm never satisfied. I have told myself on a few occasions that this is the last thing I buy, but now I've stopped lying to myself. Segueing to I have nothing else to spend my money on. Bills always get paid, what few bills I have left now, empty nest, and then buy my wife a new pair of shoes or a new purse every once in a while. My home smells like whatever I'm cooking that day. Finally, I do not have an endgame. I need one, but I don't have one.

But we have big plans for our store sir! 🤪

Also Mr. McCullough, you mentioned you mentioned an “end game” for your collection. Establishing a foundation could help preserve your collection long-term, create opportunities for public engagement, and even support scholarly research on African art. It could also solidify your legacy as a steward of this incredible cultural history.

Mr. McCullough, have you ever considered opening an art foundation? For someone who’s collecting I was shocked to hear that an antique store would be an aspiration of yours. With an art foundation you can use your collection to teach emerging scholars about your art objects. Foundations can receive grants and funding to support operations. And you don’t have to sell the precious items you’ve collected.

😅 I wouldn't be a collector if I was married...I was bored and.. it's a oh 😮my God collection. But I never displayed until 2 years ago, I cannot live with my collection..I prefer minimalist.

Darryl, I once collected old cameras. One day the best of them were stolen. After I got over the loss, I decided I would no longer collect anything, knowing how quickly anything material could be lost. I'll be content just to admire the collections others present in videos or visit a museum. Maybe that's why I very much enjoy the videos you and others show here on YT. Thanks for sharing your collections and insights with us.

We are the stewards of our ancestral heritage. Unfortunately, it's part of our culture that has been stripped from us and now our cultural DNA has ignited a passion in us to understand and to teach others who are willing to listen.

Hi Darryl! Wonderful video :) so for cleaning with a solvent, what would you use as solvent? Is the citrus spray, or is that just for scent? Do you make a solvent, like water mixed with something in a spray bottle? And would you recommend solvent, odorban, and a quick wipe of liquid gold to finish it off? Thank you for all the help :)

I've always assest them that way for whatever reason 😎 I'm a tad embarressed that I've never owned a copy of A Love Supreme,tho I do possess Giant Steps, Live at the Village Vanguard '63 and Dakar and something 'trane did with Monk. Great episode Darryl! The sound equipment you showed was the kind of equipment I dreamed of having, but could never afford. Over the years between the late 60s till the late 80s, I collected about 300 albums, but I'll mention just two that I have played from the time I bought them new and still listen to today. One is probably my all time favorite album - " Aja" by Steely Dan and the other is " Dreams" by Gabor Szabo. I see you already have my all time favorite and the second is here on YT. I would highly recommend it to any jazz lover. I think you made some great choices in the albums you picked, but rather than go on too long, I'll leave it at that. I really enjoyed this video!!
