The Poetic of Water in Scandinavian Literature ~ From the Mind of a Literature Student
Hello to you,
water in literature is used in so many ways to convey meaning. Not only in a metaphorical sense but also in its elemental form as a resource. I wrote one of my bachelor theses on water in scandianvian literature so let me share some perspectives on this topic.
All the best to you!
Some of the mentioned books:
Olli Jalonen - "Die Kunst unter Wasser zu atmen" (Original Finnish: "Merenpeitto")
Roald Amundsen - "The Roald Amundsen Diaries: The South Pole Expedition 1910-1912"
Ulla-Lena Lundberg - "Ice"
Tore Kvæven - "Eisiges Land" (Original Norwegian: "Når landet mørknar")
00:00-01:25 Introduction
01:25-07:42 Theoretical approach (antropocene, ecocriticism)
07:42-08:56 Literature list (Scandinavian books)
08:56-09:48 Perspective of submarine aesthetics
09:48-10:52 Gender perspectives on water
10:52-12:06 The poetic of the marshland
12:06-22:58 My thesis - Water as a resource, mythology, poetics and gender
22:58-25:02 Final thoughts and Outro

2023 Book Recap ~ From the Mind of a Literature Student
I should move to Vienna. I'm so sorry but i have to say. You're the most beautiful thing i have ever seen.😯 My english is not good therefore i can't understand what you tell in the video. I also sorry for that.
That was really inspiring 💙
This video was “the push in the ass” for me.
How wonderful, keep going!
Tarjei Vesaas's novel "The Birds" also deals with the topic of water extensively, as the main character becomes a ferryman (not only that, but I won't spoiler)! Ice Palace that you mention in the description is one of my favourite Norwegian books! Thank you for the video
Sounds interesting, thank you for the recommendation! ✨
I think the topic of water is fascinating, I’m from Mexico, and in my town there is a problem with water constantly, people say its because the well that the government uses to extract drinking water is overexploited, my mom always says that people in the city don't know how to take care of the water because they don't know what it's like to go to the river to get it, I guess that's the reason why I try to take care of the water. One day I was very upset, because in the building where I live they turned off the water again, and people finish it very quickly, and in my head I though "el agua está en constante huida" (the water is constantly running away), in my opinion that is kind of a poetic way to say we don’t have water to wash the dishes. I haven't completely read all Joseph Campbell's books. I don't know if you know about him, his most famous book is “The hero with a thousand faces”, but he also has other books that talk about myths and gods around the world, there is also Mircea Eliade, I’ve only read the writings of both for a high school project.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like the phrase you had in your mind when there was no water in your building, very poetic indeed :) I need to check out those authors, thank you!
I did these translations with a translator, im just starting to learn German :) (17:05) Green and fierce, the sea was now pouring over the railing, and the ship's deck became steeper and steeper, animals and provisions and people slid and fell towards the hungry water. (17:45) All those who had perished. At first they had fought against it [...], but then, when they had fought for a while, they calmed down and floated down there in peaceful silence. [...] And if the sea goddess Ran, the ruler of the great depths, had stood on the seabed that day with her black net in her hand, if she had put her head back and stared up at the surface, she would have seen people and animals floating down from above. Slowly, like dark snowflakes. And she would have enjoyed it, this beautiful but merciless goddess, and perhaps she would have smiled. And perhaps her teeth would have gleamed for a brief moment in the darkness she sought out down here. (20:50) Like a weightless spirit, he floated through a complete darkness.[...] In his massive casket, everything was silent and dark, as if the depths that belonged to him had been recreated in it. In his own soul. Only now and then did he notice life pulsating like a glowing reflection of thoughts and longings.
Due to reasons I stopped studdying literature. However I still love it. This channel is a gem!
Glad to hear you can still enjoy it! All the best :)
nice topic, and it is obvious that you really like it, yes, the video was coherent, enjoyable, thanks! (what i "recognized", is that you speak in a very clear way, i mean pronounciaton of words, and your german accent is also different from what i have heard so far, again much clearer, easier to understand. ) (just saw, "ice" from ULL is available to me, i will look into it soon)
Thank you for your kind words! I am glad you enjoyed the video 🤗 all the best!
Thank you!
Hello Luise! Is your library English friendly, and does it have books in English? Ty ^^
Yes the public library does have english books! :) if you check out the website you can search for any book online if and where it is available
Thank you Luise. Excellent and thorough analysis of water and its significance to us all. Enlightening. I appreciate your thoughtful approach :-)
Thank you! I am glad you found it interesting :)
War tuhhhh, the element of life💧☔
Call me Ishmael. Maybe you could read some of your work sometime, continue to enjoy your channel.
That might have been my favorite of all your videos. It had everything, the university, the writing, the tea, but the story while you were making that food (day to day cooking annoys me too!) and the karaoke, I don't know something extra coming through. I loved it. Of course, the university footage. So beautiful. Such a wonderful place to get to walk around and study in. What a corner of the world! The Italian woman was obsessed with pasta, you say you're obsessed with porridge, I think I'm obsessed with Vienna and books. So, here I am. And now I know how I will get my apple a day (a struggle of mine) - cut it up and put it in my (oatmeal) sorry not porridge, but maybe i need to investigate the difference. They look similar. Wonderful to share the low key week with you! great work thank you for the fun and inspiration.
So happy you liked that video! It was fun to put together :) I always thought porridge and oatmeal are just synonyms but maybe there is a difference :D Have a wonderful day!
Thank you so much for recommending the Liveship Traders series! I had never heard of it before. I love naval fiction! I've added it to my wishlist. :) P.S.: My sister's thesis was also based on Bourdieu's theory (we studied Übersetzen am Zentrum für Translationswissenschaft). Good luck with it! :)
I wish you all the best for your masters thesis! I am currently starting my BA-thesis on Hans Falladas novel "Kleiner Mann - was nun?" and the masculinity portrayed in it. The novel was published almost at the same time as Vicky Baums "Menschen im Hotel". I do struggle a bit with structuring a bigger writing project (bigger than a usual paper), so I would be interested to hear more about your writing process etc concerning your thesis! :)
How interesting! Good luck on that :) When it comes to structuring I am always having a hard time as well but I usually just start out with a first draft for the chapters I want to cover and as soon as I start writing I can play around with it and change things if needed. I might film more of the process. All the best!
What an exciting project. I hope you keep us updated on every stage. I would be very interested. Great work as always.
Thank you so much :)
Your videos are wonderful the way they are!! There are people, like me, that do not know a lot about literature, so your content is always very informative! :)

Could you make another video recommending austrian female authors? I would like to read more from my own country. I always end up reading more from authors from english speaking country.
I am glad this topic is of interest! I will try to make a video in the future :)
so the comment: good video as always, i cannot really say anything about your topic since while i read something about "budapest 1900", unfortunately, nothing about "Vienna 1900", especially not about female writers. i checked the names, and realized that i saw two movies which can be connected to Vicki Baum, one is the oscar-winning adaptation of the novel you show in the video, the movie was "grand hotel" 1932, the other one was written by her, also from the 30's. near the end of the video you mention "wild" numbers connected to books, i wrote about the hungarian situation but it may have been the reason why the comment disappeared, some time ago similar thing happened, i have no idea why, i wrote, rewrote it but numbers (pric.s) were there and the comment disappeared again and again.
I need to check out the movies, great tip :) how peculiar that your comment was taken down but thank you for taking the time to rewrite it! All the best

How much your enjoying your literature review for your research? Sometimes it really sucks not being able to study what you really want to. But m really enjoying my master's thesis. And buying books online which i need is super super expensive here in my country you can buy one laptop with that much money xd, so i gotta stick to reading on gadgets. Anyways have a producive and nice day luise :).
Research is definitely the hardest part for me so I am looking forward to actually writing my thesis but I do enjoy the topic :) good luck with your own thesis! All the best
I'm pleased to hear ongoing academic research on the subject of twentieth century female authors. Their stories deserve a place in the history books for sure. Pierre Bourdieu was a very influential French thinker in his time and his work remains foundational in sociology as well as English Cultural Studies. Hi Louise! For the Q&A I had a question that I would like you to answer, if you want to. So, I'm very interested in how does the uni system work there in Vienna. I live in Spain and studied Biochemistry, and I was very shocked to hear you talking about choosing your courses and doing things not related to your main study theme. Here uni is VERY stressful (in science for sure), we can't choose anything and we have to go to all obligatory courses we have programmed for that year, more or less. If you don't do things this way, you are the freak one... Also, we don't have so many dissertation works, we have to focus on exams because it is what grades the course that we are doing. I love how you learn there, it is much freer and independent! If you want, you could explain how you organized your uni and master courses. Love your videos, as always!! :)
Thank you 🤗 how interesting, it really differs quite a lot around the world. I will try to answer that :)
To be fair, natural sciences in Vienna are more similiar to what you just described. Social science are just different
You are so encouraging. I love listening to you. I am also a literature student and can relate to a lot of what you are saying. Especially the stuff about feeling like an imposter or not good enough. I think we have to remind ourselves that studying should be fun, it should be enjoyable and inspirational. Oftentimes the system tricks us into thinking that we are somehow lacking. But we are humans after all. We all have our own preferred speed and depth of processing...
So true, thank you for your words! I am glad you enjoyed my video :) all the best!
nice vlog again, definitely not contemporary vibes, but very enjoyable (even if i wasn' t a literature student, still some memories came up about uni life...). the stairs at 14 minute are a bit scary:)
