Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury Police Cars 1981-1989
Hey its Zach from 718motorpool and today were going to be talking about the Plymouth Gran fury and dodge diplomat also known as the Chrysler M body, The chrysler M body was a midsize rear wheel drive car made from 1977 until 1989. It consisted of the plymouth gran fury, dodge diplomat, and the chrylser new yorker amonst several other models. Today were going to focusing on the police package models made from 1981 until 1989.
So the black car in the video is a 1987 dodge diplomat started life as an unmarked philidelphia police car. Its a 4 bbl model and this is my first experiance driving an m body car. After driving other police cars from the era it does seem a little more nimble but pretty par for the course for a car from this era. I'm tall and fat and really didnt notice the smaller size being an issue however
To set the stage Chrysler dominated the police car market from the 1960s until 1978 when they discontinued the B body Fury and monaco. At the time a 440 equipped Fury or Monaco Police car was the fastest car in america at the time. Reaching top speed of 132 mph with 255 horsepower. And the F body Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare covered the midsize market but didnt sell nearly as well as the fullsize cars but were still respectable police cars. Between the two lines of police cars Chrysler Dominated the police car market with 80% of police cars sold in 1978 being either dodge or plymouth.
With 1978 being the last year of the B body and due to looming regulations to increase fuel economy the B bodys were discontinued. In place of them were the R body Dodge St Regis, Chrysler Newport and introduced for 1980 the Plymouth Gran fury. These cars were almost univerally hated between poor performance and build quality. Production would end in 1981 after 3 years of abysmal sales.
In 1981 The M body police package would roll out with the introduction of the dodge diplomat and chrysler lebaron police cars internally coded as the A38 package. These would take the place of the Aspen and Volare police cars and be chryslers only police package cars. The Chrysler Lebaron would be a one year only offering and chryslers last offering to the police market. In 1982 Plymouth would debuet the gran fury which is a low effort badge engenerred version of the dodge diplomat. One important thing to mention about the M body was it was a midsize car competing with full size cars so the bigger selling points were that it was cheaper and more fuel effianct.
From 1981 to 1983 you could order a choice of the slant 6 or the 318 engines, On the low end of power they were making 90 horsepower and on the high end they were pushing out 165 later bumping up to 175 horsepower by the end of production in 1989. There are rumors of certain agencies pulling strings to get cars with 360s as drug intradiction cars however none of these have ever been documented, but that being said chrysler did have a history of working with fleets and in theory there were work arounds that those in the know could pull off, However those cars if they do exist were never documented by Chrysler.
During this time Chrysler lost a significant footing in the police market to GM, who dominated the police car market with the caprice and left Ford and Chrysler competing for second place. This mainly happened because Chrysler started the 80s out by almost going bankrupt and focusing all there time and efforts on the K car and minivans which were keeping them in business and let the M body stagnate by selling the same car since 1977 and doing very little to keep it competive. The only real groundbreaking thing the M body did was it was the first police car in the US to have an airbag which was rolled out in mid 1988. Ford and Chevy wouldnt have airbag equipped police cars until 1990 and 1991 respectively.
There was a rumor that these cars were going to continue into the early 90s with a modern fuel injection system. These cars were already behind the times in the 80s so I really dont feel these cars could be competitive in the 90s espicalily competing with the newly redesigned caprice and crown victoria. Instead Chrysler discontinued the M platform in 1989 and bowed out of the police car market until 2002 when they would introduce the front wheel drive Dodge intrepid.

To see such a car put to its max, check out the chase scene in the movie "SHORT TIME." In which Cabinet Coleman played opposite Teri Garr.
I recall when these were common place in indiana. Our local HazMat truck had a red one with only two rotators in it total with mirrors. Center section was clear, but empty.
Made for excellent yellow cabs too And a yummy salad
No wig wags?
Meanwhile, I plug my red lens dashlaser with custom green cellophane backing into my trailblazer and blow the cigarette plug fuse 😂
I literally spent three hours trying to figure out why the cigarette lighter plug in this kept blowing fuses. After rooting around the dashboard, I ended up cleaning out the plug and putting a slightly higher amp fuse in.
Former Owner,Ex-Grapevine,TX PD '86 Gran Fury, shop # 86-00196. Had it over 20 yrs, sold it to a gentleman who later sold it to another who restores/collects Police Cars.
I heard these Chryslers had a 1st gear lockout due to cops holding first gear when accelerating & blowing the engines.
During the 1980s, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had a staggering number of these agile machines to accompany the Ford LTD Crown Victoria Interceptors and Mustang SSPs, which were also accepted by that agency; the almost compact size made the Dippy a proven performer.
2:41 Cops (1989)
@2:45 I like the clip of the idiot getting out without putting it in Park!
I had a silver 85 Plymouth Gran Fury, very rare for civilian use, sometimes speeders would slow down when I approached, thinking I was an unmarked cop.
The m body Plymouth was available since 1978 in Canada and called the Caravelle. After 1983 it became the Caravelle Salon to avoid confusion with the E series Plymouth Caravelle twin to the Dodge 600.
I was planning on putting a brief mention of the Canadian caravelle in, however, I completely forgot, which is a shame because that was the car used in the short time chase
I know that a lot city police agencies had these M bodies back in the day 😊
I was a copper back in the late 80's Nothing like the sound and feel when I rompted on that diplomat and that 4 barrel kicked in👍👍🚓
The Nevada Highway Patrol used the 1981 LeBaron. A few appear in the Hardcastle and McCormick pilot episode in the end chase scene.
So did the Dallas,Tx PD.
Is it possible to be in love with a police patrol car? Because if so, I think I was literally in love with the NYPD 1989 Plymouth Grand Fury!
My first New police car was a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. I hated it. Blindspots were terrible, engine power was dismal, and the headroom was non-existent. My department ended up buying 10 of them over a 3 year period. None of them lasted past 95,000 miles. We had Caprices and Crown Vics that went upwards of 160,000 before being retired. But I did end up with Dodge Magnum wagon pursuit package with the Hemi. I definitley miss that car. Got her up to 154 mph in a pursuit once.
You in California?
So you guys had caprices and crown vic. Like from the 80’s or from the 90’s? But it’s considered that the Ltd crown vic or the crown vic as the best car ever to be made. Maybe cuz it’s a working car that will run
We had early to Mid 1990's Caprices, most with the LT-1 Corvette 350s. Almost as good as the Magnum. Unfortunately, they had over 130000 miles on them by the time I was hired. They were fast but rattled like a bucket of bolts. As for the Crown Vics, they were good, reliable, long lasting patrol cars. But they were underpowered. If Ford had put the Twin Cam 4.6 V8 in the Crown Vic, that would have been an awesome combination.
I’ve been looking for one of those dashboard rotator lights with the reflectors seen on the first car in the video but I can never seem to find one small enough to fit on a dashboard. Do you know what they were called? Maybe even a specific model?
SVP hotshot
Omg, he actually mentioned the 1980-1981 (I know that they only sold the A38 model in 1981) LeBaron, I love those, those have forever been my favorite M body period, I know a lot of people hate them, but they're my favorite, they're just a really unique sharp looking elegant police car, almost like the late 60's to 1982 Mercury Police cars (Parklane, Marquis S, Cougar S, Montego and Monterey)!! And I love how the St Regis, Newport Police Package for '79, Gran Fury Police Package for 80-81, got a reference too, I love Chrysler R bodies, again, I know they're a hated cop car like any other malaise cop car, but I still care about them, they're really nice looking cars in my opinion
I don’t get how the LeBaron is hated. It’s actually a very interesting car in front of itself and it’s also the last time Chrysler itself produced a police car. I agree I like the formal treatment the Chrysler got. And as for the R bodies I feel I needed to reference them to tell the story of the M body better
@@The718Motorpool Me neither, I think they're a really sharp-looking car, I think it was Chrysler's way of going out with a bang. Everything comes from something, just like in order to talk about R bodies you couldn't just forget the 75-78 Fury/Coronet/Monaco
Always loved the dog dish hubcap on these M bodies.
I’ve seen a few with full wheel covers and they just don’t look right
Thank you can't wait to see a St Regis or Newport Vid I am looking for a real one to restore Great history
Eventually, I wanna start doing more on police cars as well as like bars as the two go hand-in-hand, so don’t be shocked if you see in R body video
Can you do a video like this on Crown Vic’s, Caprice, and chargers
I got a few things in the works
There were real 360 cruisers but i believe this was only available pre 1984. Largely went to Highway Patrols in the Midwest. I have heard the rumors of the suped up cars from Florida. Likely BS as no one has cone up with puctyor a dept that used them
I’ve read a decent amount of documentation on these cars throughout the production run snd pre 84You just had the option of the slant six and 318, and either four barrel or two barrel flavor. I think the 360 cars will be something of a legend that nobody can prove they existed, but nobody can prove they can’t. Kind of adds to the lore of these cars as well as Chrysler holding onto being the king of cop cars.
@@The718Motorpool maybe cars with 360 headers are mistaken as 360s. i do recall someone on the FMJ Body forums had a MidWest Highway Patrol M with a 360 in it. could just be a previous owners, or a Dept in house modification if its not a documented thing that was sold
My first Dip was a 85. It was a used Illinois SP car. But unfortunately we bought it at an ISP auction in 96. Which made me wonder why a 85 would be held on to for so long.. I think they could have gotten at least 2 more years out of the Mbody. Added FI and maybe a 360 option. My Father was a police officer in the 70s and 80s and he swears a Aspen with a 360 was faster than a Monaco with a 400 and could almost keep up with a poor running Monaco 440
Little odd that they kept it so long. Was it in decent shape when you got it?
I remember these lights as they were a heavy presence in the lower east side back in the 80's. I miss the lights and sirens of the police from the 80's and 90's
Transit vehicle. Back in the day I worked the tunnels on foot. Cold dingy hot piss filled for 18years never had wheels or a radio. LMAO
Gas guzzlers
Would like to get my hands on one. Great video
There still out there and come up for sale every once in a while!
That is the sweetest sound I've head. I was born and raised in NYPD and this was the everyday sound of NYPD at work.
......... housing is unavailable
Is that a Chicago Police Jetstrobe ? I can tell because of the silver metal center cover. Hope you make a video about that. I was always curious about the metal center cover. I think it was the holder for the beat tag
It is a Chicago pd jetstrobe! Making a video for it is on the agenda. I’m just trying to locate a beat tag.
@The718Motorpool If you reach out to Greg Reynolds he might be able to help you. He's CopcarRanch I believe
I remember that kind of light bar, we have that in our Police, Ambulance and Fire (color: Blue and Red with metal grilling at middle) Department in my country, Philippines during 80/90's then at year 2005... It was changed into LED from Federal Signal Rotating Lights
What light bar did chief cars and ambulances have in CFD up until the last few years? The really wide two level one?
I’m not entirely sure to be honest
Code 3 XF2300
Here you go^^^^
Dumb vectors
Blue LED vision pods have randomly been showing up on CFD trucks off and on over the past few years in place of green in some cases. That makes me sad... so much tradition with the green / red, I hate to see it replaced by blue on a fire vehicle. I know many IL depts use blue, but not CFD please.
One now-former Fire Commissioner got a bug up his ass about "unit visibility" and mandated the addition of blue (as if the green forward and red/yellow aft didn't serve the same purpose?), so CFD rigs of that era (including the current set of Rosenbauer squads) have blue _in addition to_ the green. On the squads green was only on the intersection clearing lamp on the front bumper, blue on the roof bar. Blue completely replaced green on buggies of the era, but after his unpopular and mercifully short tenure ended, the maintenance shops started walking back his "improvements".
@@xheralt Thank you for this info, that is good news.
Call me a purist, but blue should not be on fire trucks. Glad to see the green is making a return.
I grew up in a smallish town in the western suburbs and they always seemed to have a heckuva budget for the latest technology. They had MDTs before anyone, Vector smart light bars, Motorola Sabers. I always thought that these Vector light bars were so futuristic.
If the tax base is high enough a lot of times these small departments get a lot of cool shit
Fire Commissioner Albert Goodrich of the Chicago Fire Department (1927 - 1931) had a nautical background. He applied the marine scheme (red light on port, green light on starboard) to fire apparatus, and the idea became a tradition of the Chicago Fire Department.
Most the of CFD rigs built from 2001-2002 had the Split View point models
They look blueish green. Fire trucks in my city have green lights on some of them too. We have vector bars with ine green pod too i believe but have been phased out. Now just a green light flashing to the rear...
The 718Motorpool here is the actual meaning of the green light on the fire apparatus in Chicago. The reason for the green light on the right side is not for indicating right and left. If you go back to the days of horse drawn equipment during the late 1800 early 1900 the equipment had red and green lanterns. The red lantern was lit during the response to the scene indicating danger. The green lantern was lit when returning to the station indicating that the danger was over.
That makes no sense, with red and green routinely being illuminated simultaneously. Goodrich was, on the other hand the first Fire Commissioner of the City fire department, when it was originally organized. I could buy one or more of the volunteer units that were the predecessors of the fulltime professional city unit having that distinct practice, but not the whole city.
Just fyi the CFD Vectors had TCL in the center clear pod and the clear pods on the left and right were intersection sweeps. 😉
th-cam.com/video/3UtRRJxHM-A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=M6jgyYzF_9PUIL-U
A PD I was with in the early 90’s was the first in the nation to go to these. All pods were smart with the arrow on the back.
We also had the original smart siren control which was all buttons and no slide switch.
Always thought these Chicago Fire ones that were on the Chicago Fire Cars in these days were really neat because they had the one green pod
A rare glimpse of my Chicago PD 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco made it into your video. Do you have the full video of the parade?
Sweet car you have man
I will get it to you over the weekend
@@The718Motorpool, thank you, Z.
Bratton rocks
In the lower level of 1PP garage they have one of each from different generations starting with Grand Fury circa 70s
Best part is. The NYPD too this day still puts Lo Jack Terminals in its cars despite being 30 year old technology and no one using it anymore
They might still put LoJack terminals, but they took them off the VHF system around 12 years ago. I believe now to stay competitive they’re using cellular location.
Can’t stand the NYPD Police….Police is included in the NYPD….it’s redundant to put POLICE
It was definitely one of the sillier designs they piloted in the 90s. I think the 73 to 91 design was probably the best looking livery.
@@The718Motorpool it still appears on the RMPs. Story I heard was Kelly was traveling on FDR one day and saw a radio car swerving in and out of traffic, he thought it was NYPD but turned out it was PAPD car that said POLICE on trunk. After that order came down for NYPD POLICE. Could be complete nonsense, who knows. City RMPs are pretty bad between getting beat up and the CPR labels and silly Twitter handles. They certainly don’t command respect like the Trooper cars do.
CV was best radio car and hybrid fusions were the absolute worst.
I always love a good old-fashioned rotating light bar. *(Sigh)* I wish they were still common today…
I say this way too often, but the newer stuff has no soul
Officer safety is paramount over style.
