@@moonbeamskies3346 Its one of many. Prius, Camry, Sienna, Rav4, Nissan NV200, Ford Transit are pretty much what make up the fleet now. Occasionally, you'll see a Tesla.
The original medallion for this car is 1C81 not 4Y73. I saw this very car in person few years ago back when it was still in the yard in PA. Old owner told me it was used in a movie or tv show and that is why the medallion # was changed. I actually bought the metal medallion off this car that was bolted to the hood and I still have it. I reached out awhile ago regarding getting the original medallion back to the owner but don’t think I got a response
These are so cool, and came with many unique factory options as well! I’m the proud owner of a ‘98 Merc W202 that also served as a Lisbon cab for over 25 years with my dad always behind the wheel! Needless to say I’m prizing that car so much. It has reinforced suspension, a rear window curtain, and special reinforced seats.
My Grandfather was a yellow cab owner/operator. He was a Checker cab driver my whole life growing up. He won his medallion in 1992 (Chicago). He purchased a yellow 92 Caprice 9C6 with a 4.3L V6. I distinctly remember him bringing it home, I was 12. He went into the garage and put Oldsmobile wheel covers on it and he's beeded seat cover lol He drove it for 8 years ? Give or take. Until he sold his medallion. Then sold the cab. Interesting issues with the car was that the check engine light never went off. He had to put a piece of black electrical tape over it. And change the oil monthly at the yellow cab shop and only used 10w40. Summer and winter lol
@The718Motorpool I'm not 100% sure. But I do know that the used police car market price revolved around what year you could put a cab in service. For instance. If you wanted a 96 Caprice and it can be used as a cab you were bidding against cab companies and you paid top top top dollar. But if a 95 Caprice couldn't be used for a cab. Well you got it on the cheap.
My Mum's Uncle, who was a Taxi driver from the early 1970's up until 2000, kept his 1981 XD Ford Falcon sedan Taxi; his was ordered with the standard Ford Australia Taxi pack, except he was good mates with the local dealer and the car was ordered with a 351ci Cleveland V8 & Auto+ LSD. He has had it semi restored (400,000km kn the clock), has all the original lights & gear in it

A lot of them were taxis from new. Owner/Operators put so many miles and depended on them, so they didn’t want to start with an already worn out car. And NYC made it mandatory for them to be new in the later 90s
New York City required them to be new sometime around 1994 or 1995 when Rudy Giuliani became mayor. This was part of his clean up of NYC. However, many operators bought new cars as this was their primary source of income
Such a cool find! Amazing that so few of these have survived.
Love seeing the 90's caprice taxi's and police cars. Really defined the NYC landscape of that era. Seeing yellow Camry's in Manhattan is so boring
Is the Camry the most common model used now, or is it one of many? I read somewhere that the Prius is also common. And a few minivans.

@@JayMalone26 Amazing how the Big 3 don't dominate the taxi market anymore.
Agreed
It would be neat to just get it running well enough and drive it through the city, grime and all. I wonder how folks would react.
Amazing find. Hope it gets cleaned up. I remember seeing family pictures with these in the background
There's a lot of potential in that car!
So this was filmed about a year and a half ago. There is an update video coming.

Love this. Body. Style. ❤❤❤❤

I love weird fleet spec cars like that!
Cop shocks and everything 😂.
So beautiful to see a great era of time in one video. The sunshine Yellow 1996 but the rare squares backs in the background are off the charts....
The before and after on this car was really incredible. What a great piece of NYC history.
Can wait to do the after part
Beautiful, Beautiful, beautiful.... Last rwd from Arlington, Texas...
I had this one as a 1/18 scale model back then. Very cool find!
I think everybody had the 1/18th scale model back in the day lol
Great vehicle! I had a 79 Caprice and it was great. Have a short video on it.
I have a 90 caprice 9c1 that I’ll be making a video on sooner or later

Those V6 caprices are super rare. I believe they were only used from 91 until 93. Did Chicago require all medallion cabs be new cars?

I would love to see it. Did Australia have an actual taxi spec?
Nice sedan.
I hope this one gets restored
These actually looked good unlike the Ford Crown Victorias from 1993-96 when they were painted bleached yellow....
When Ford changed the yellow paint on the later aeros it was a huge improvement
Seeing as it came from NYC, probably smells like a barn inside.
I think you meant bagel, there are very few barns in NY.
Awesome!
Surprisingly they never used Chevy Lumima or Ford Taurus.
They used both the Lumina and the Taurus in the 1990s
Thats terrible that so few have survived
why are there so many audio cuts?
This is when I was just learning to edit audio and I’ve learned a lot since. IIRC i edited this on my phone

I do have an update on this car as this video was filmed early last year
