They kinda boned Matsuno and made Van the main protagonist outside of what he wanted. Basch was supposed to be the hero iirc, but they polled a bunch of Japanese girls and they did what they did in MGS2: which was replace the main character Snake with Raiden to get more women playing. It didn't work. They not only didn't play, but they made Matsuno practically leave, and no one was happy with the forced character. MGS2 Raiden wasn't liked either and they had to make him less bishonen in MGS4 so fans wouldn't cringe.

FFX is perhaps the most boring and uninteresting entry in the series for me. FFXII, for me, was amazing. I find that most people who say FFX is their favorite feel that way cause it was either their very first FF or just the one that stood out from their childhood. I was older. It did not hook me. Boring story, boring characters. I think the only thing that really entertained me was seeing just how racist they were gonna make Wakka.

Fuck that, I love the Zodiac Age. HATE the hidden bow on the airship that is literally impossible to get without cheating, but everything else is great.. BTW, the calendar year at the start is there for fans of FF Tactics, since this is the same world as that game, but set long before it. It's an easter egg.

It's a more interesting choice to have us follow Vaan and then get swept up with him in the critical conflict than just to like follow The Chosen One in the epic quest to defeat Satan. This and a whole host of arguably better and grittier choices make FF12 seem empirically better on paper, and yet 10 is so much more memorable and often more exciting. 10 does have more convoluted bullshit, which is another mark against it, at least on paper.

I absolutely love ff12. Its my favorite ff game by miles. I just absolutely loved doing the hunts and hunting down new gear. The zodiac system update made this game truly shine. My first ff game was 10, and i loved it then. When i got 12 i didn’t like the gameplay at first, but i LOVED the world - it feels very star wars-y to me which is so cool. I replayed ff12tza during covid lockdown and it sparked my reintroduction to jrpgs. Maaaaaaaan i love ff12, i might even replay it now lol

FF10 is loved because it's Baby's First Final Fantasy. It's both a low point and a turning point in the franchise. It was such a bore/disappointment after having played the first nine that I checked out from there on.

Even MMO people constantly forget about FFXI. It was the number one MMO in the world before WoW came out but whenever people talk about "the state of MMOs before WoW" they consistently fail to ever mention it.

Ive been thinking of playing all the mainline final fantasies again. The dread of playing 9 and 12 stop me. They are not worth playing again and were s chore the first time.

I put Kimahri down Rikku's path since it was the only part of the original grid not covered. He passed Rikku by the time she joined and made her useless. He then becomes as fast as Rikku, but stronger and most of his lances can break heavy armour. Plus he can use Al Bhed potions. Done this way hes the most powerful character in the game.

Great video about two of my favorite FF games 🥹 Was about throw hands when you talked about X’s OST and didn’t mention Hamauzu (but then included it in the small note). 12 was definitely a game I appreciated more on a second play through, and once I was older. As a notoriously lazy gamer, I spent ages on the side quests in 12, they’re so gripping, funny or sad alike. My favorite was rounding up all the cockatrices, their dialogue and the way they all spoke with different accents was hilarious, another point for a fantastic localization.

3:20 Final Fantasy XII getting released close to the PS3 launch shouldn't be a problem, since the original fat model had backwards compatibility anyway. The real problem was that the Xbox 360 was a really popular console to have, and like the PS2 before it, built a large install base.

I may be commenting too early, but the distinct lack of payoff in the back half is a direct result of the Director change. Matsuno would have killed it

FF12 was just meh. Thats all. Also the PoV character that doesn't truly add anything to the plot and isn't super interesting (Vahn.. but also Pinnelo). If you remove Vahn and Pinnelo from the game and made Balthir the first controllable character (abd rework the intro just slightly) it'd be a better game. Edit: ... Why this is a 3 hour video when it's a that simple.

Tbh when 12 first came out I bounced off of it pretty hard since I didn't understand the full scope of the gear system, I would just hit optimize and wonder why everyone kept doing 20 damage with axes. Now that I'm older (and love the job system of the Zodiac releases) it's now probably my fave mainline entry (sudden ending aside). Now I kinda wish there was a modern release of the original version so I can figure out the boards again

FFXII's biggest flaw is its main character. While I could grow to like Tidus, I never liked and still don't like Vaan. In my opinion, he is a very boring main character. If a game has a main character which I don't like, I'm probably not going to like it. I preferred almost any other character other than Vaan. Didn't like the gameplay either. So not the game for me. I can see XII's potentials, but alas, not many of them were fulfilled enough for me.

FFXII was released close to the PS3 release because they already had it prepared for the new hardware and wanted a bit of quick cash before the PS2 was moved on from. It did much better than how Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams did, trying similar, 6 months before the PS3 release. They didn’t have the money to rebuild it and weren’t preparing for the new console. It’s a game I wish were able to be remade/remastered on new systems, pc and/or console. The other problem that happened with FFXII is that the story was meh - very childish, in my opinion. Both games are in my top 3 favorite games of all time, FFX being higher.

Oh but lets not forget when Vaan kicked one of the Knights, if not for that, we had no one else to do the Kick, thus making Vaan super Important to the Story… 😏😂

12 is amazing

FF11 being online kinda killed the momentum. From 1997 to 2001, we got FF7, 8, Tactics, 9 and 10. 12 was 2006? Not to mention 12 was released after the 360 was released, and I know plenty of people who jumped ship from PS2 to 360

FFXII has the GREATEST combat system objectively for modern evolution

just began seeing the video and around 11 minutes when you discuss about how both games handle their intro i will just say one thing. its the end of the generation, the previous game already did something and they dont want to repeat it but most importantly the INTRO is something 100% of any player who tries game WILL play throught. so thats why giving a big impression from the get go is always a must on AAA since the early ps2 era (ps1 was still half assed game design). the tonal shift fits for both games due to how you explained it sets stuff you will only understand HOURS later and also REWARDS REPLAYS!!! of the game because the first you learn what you are seeing, and the second you UNDERSTAND what you are playing, which a lot of jrps does both for foreshadowing and or to simply reward people who pay attention to the most minimal details of things.

FFX was trash, Overhyped and 100% linear. X-2 was better...:/ But yeah XII was DOA it came at the end of Playstation 2's lifespan.

TLDW: because ffx is fun and ffxii is not

I played both games currently right now but haven't finished either. Some of the cutscenes I haven't watched, maybe I have a different version of the games?

I don't know, when XII came out I tried it and story aside I didn't feel like playing a mediocre single player MMO when I could go and play and actual MMO. As much as I'm a final fantasy Andy I don't even need a good story, gameplay I enjoy is enough, but if a game has neither then... None of the ff nerds I knew from my generation liked this game, we forced ourselves to complete the game and promptly forgot about it.

Ff 12’s opening would’ve ironically worked better if it was ff 12-2, with a different ff12 to build the world and get people invested in all the things it throws at you in the start
