How To Make a Hoop Skirt
Do you want to make a giant ballgown, or have a voluminous silhouette, but don't want to be encumbered by a thousand layers of petticoats? Then a Hoop Skirt is just the answer! Also known as a crinoline or cage skirt, it helps you give your skirts that large, dramatic shape while also remaining lightweight and flexible.
This tutorial will guide you through the making of your very own hoop skirt with a hem bag from start to finish. Towards the end of the video, you will also find some measurement guides on how much steel each hoop should be measured for a rough idea, although I recommend doing a mock-up first to see if the size is right for you. These measurements vary from a 23-inch (58cm) waist to a 55-inch (140cm) waist, but the possibilities are endless!
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Bonjour vidéo très intéressante. Je fais actuellement la crinoline de votre vidéo 55-inch mais j'en rencontre une difficulté avec les cerceaux. Comment déterminer la hauteur entre chaque cerceaux s'il vous plaît.
Dear Giorgia, thank you for sharing your talent. May God Bless you in more, Could you please put some wedding gown on the Hoop Skirt to see the beauty of the Hoop please?
@@WorkieDDinka thank you for enjoying my video! Unfortunately I don’t have a wedding gown to put over the top of this… 😅
@@GiorgiaCostumes It is ok, I will do the Hoop Skirt and the Wedding dress and will send you for your suggestion. God Bless You. Thanks again.
Would pinking shears accomplish the same effect as notching? I thought it might work for what I'm doing but it hasn't seemed to help at this point.
It depends on the fabric, but pinking shears are mainly just for preventing fraying, while notching is for allowing the fabric to lay flat and make a smooth curve. I have seen people use pinking shears to notch, however one of the mistakes that they make (which ends up not working) is just pinking the edges, which are usually far away from the sewing line and still leave that bulk there without any flex. Notching allows you to cut right to the line of sewing, which helps open up the fabric and give it that movement. If you DID want to use pinking shears, try to pink the fabric so that the bottom V of the shears is just above the sewing line. Does that make sense? I hope it does!
*giogiaCostumes* can you give the your bow measurements?
Hello! If you skip to the video time at 1:35 you should be able to see the finished bow measurements, and the calculations I made. Don't forget, they're without the seam allowance that I added (which is the S/A), so make sure to add that too!
@GiorgiaCostumes I was trying to understand and I found it hard to understand but I get It thanks❤❤🥰
Hi Georgia! How would you recommend going about making a hoop skirt that’s wider at the hips and thinner at the front and back, like those used in the 18th century?
@@hannahtelevised Hi Hannah! Apologies for getting back to you so late on this question! If you’re talking about an 18th century hoop skirt that’s wider than it is deep, I believe you’d be after a pannier (also known as a grand pannier)! A pannier pattern is significantly different to this simplified hoop skirt, because rather than just making a cage structure (like in the video) you need to actually draft a skirt with specific measurements and insert the boning into the fabric. The pannier is held together on the inside by also tying it into place with ribbon or tape. I haven’t made a pannier tutorial yet, but I hope to soon! In the meantime, I’d scope around to see if any other costuming channels have a tutorial available. Otherwise I would recommend my friend Good Hunter, who is not only an amazing seamstress but has released a pannier pattern pack that should work! I hope I’ve answered your question! (And apologies if I haven’t!!)
Omg I will be cosplaying Sailor Mars and the bows that I bought were horrible that comes from her costume. Thank you ❤❤
You're very welcome! And I'd love to see the end result, I'm sure your Mars will come out looking lovely! ♥♥
thanks! 👍
You're very welcome! 😊
Just sewed in my first boning channels, most the time they were too small but I redid them, need to work on them but that's okay!
I'm so proud of you! Well done! It's very tricky to get right but with practice all things become easier! ❤
Where would you recommend buying tulle tape and the steel thing online? I don't really know what to look for as I've never really done anything similar before. (Preferably not super expensive alternatives - I'm in uni lol)
This is a bit of a vague answer, because I'm located in Australia and not everything is available everywhere... 😅 I got my twill tape from my local craft store, but you can also buy the steel hoops and tape from online retailers! You can also buy them for cheap on places like Aliexpress but the quality might not be as great!
@@GiorgiaCostumesThank you. I did end up going online and asking cosplay forums, but I will probably keep this in mind for later projects.
You’re such a great teacher. I wish you made more videos :(
Thank you! I've got a lot more videos in the works, but I haven't been working on them because I've needed to finish other projects first. But I hope to have another one coming soon!
Which size is the crinoline in this video because it looks perfect on you. Not too big, juste the right size!!😊
I used the size 43" waist hoops, but slimmed the waistband down a touch since I was wearing a corset underneath!
@@GiorgiaCostumes thank you for your response😊
What is saw in interfacing. Is it paper violin
Sew-in interfacing is thin, loosely-woven stiffener that doesn't have an adhesive backing, so you have to sew it in instead of ironing it onto fabric to stick to.
Hi. Thank you for the video. What is saw-in interface? Thick Paper violin?
Thank you for watching! Interfacing is basically a woven fabric that is put behind fabric to make it stiffer or thicker. There are a few types of interfacing - iron-on interfacing has a glossy side that you put face down onto fabric and iron over, and the heat makes the glue side melt and stick to the fabric. Sew-in is interfacing without the glue, which you have to put into fabric by sewing it. It should be available at almost all sewing stores. Hope that helps!
This was a really useful tutorial. Thank you for posting it

I just finished it and I love it! Since I didn’t have a mannequin, I had my mom wear it as I pinned it which was really helpful. Thanks for the tutorial!
@@myrandommind1148 good on you, mum! 👏🏻 I’m so happy you found this tutorial helpful! I would love to see your finished hoop skirt!
3:32 adorable little pen xD, and thanks for this! Helped me a lot :D
You're very welcome! And thank you for liking my little souvenir pen hehe 💖
@@GiorgiaCostumes allg 😁❤️❤️
Could I space out the hoops more to make it at my ankles or would it mess it up
@@myrandommind1148 you can absolutely do that! The beauty about this tutorial is that it serves more as a guideline than rigid instructions, so you have a lot more freedom to change the shape and silhouette of it! I recommend pinning all the hoops to the straps and giving it a test run before finalising the stitching of them down. That way you can move things higher or lower before having committed to anything. Good luck!
What a great tutorial, thank you!
@@jennybeddy23 thank you so much for watching! 💖
Im new to sewing and this was very useful! I need to attach this bow to a dress shirt while being able to remove and put it back on again, how do you recommend I do that?
@@LabrysLover thank you for watching my video! In terms of attaching a bow and taking it off/putting it back on again, I’d recommend sewing some snaps onto the back of the bow and to the shirt so you can easily pop the bow off and attach it back into place. Depending on the size/weight of the bow, you might need a few snaps, or more heavy-duty ones to do the job. Hope that helps!
@@GiorgiaCostumes Thank you so much!
Absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for this video! This saved me after so many failed attempts at a good looking big bow for my cosplay 💕💕
@@cupcakeghoul16 you’re most welcome! I’d love to see how your lovely bow turned out!
@@GiorgiaCostumes I will tag you on twitter or insta once i finish it completely! If that is alright with you.
@@cupcakeghoul16 it absolutely is! Thank you!
Can I finish/ overlock after clipping?? Why is that some halters I have just over overlocking but i don't see this clipping of concave seams? Does it depend on the material? My halters are stretchy cotton, but what I'm using to make my own halter is unscretchy cotton -100% cotton. I'm worried about it fraying after making clips in the concave, how do I finish the edges/overlock them but still retain effects of clipping? (New sewer)
@@YayliTanbur These are all incredibly great questions! I wish I’d thought to include them in my video! A lot of halter tops and shirts that have overlocking-only are usually made with pretty stretchy material. Stretch fabric has a LOT more give that non-stretch fabric like cotton, so overlocking the seams would still allow it to follow a curve without needing to be notched or clipped. There are also methods of overlocking using specific thread made just for stretch fabric that also stretches too! You can absolutely overlock clipped and notched edges! The way I was taught to do it is to do your clipping/notching first to make the fabric lay how you want it to, give it a nice press with an iron to lay it flat, and then overlock the raw edge. Now because you’ve clipped the edge, you’ll only have the overlocking on the outermost part of the seam, which means that there will be some parts between the clips not overlocked. Kind of like joining two pieces of fabric together with a link of thread. This way you have the outer edge overlocked to stop fraying, and still retain the nice shape on your flat fabric. I really hope that this made sense! I’m not always the best at explaining things 😅 If it didn’t, please feel free to message me on my Instagram or Facebook and I can try drawing some diagrams to show what I mean. Good luck with your sewing project! I’m sure you’ll make an amazing garment, and I’d love to see the final product once you’re done!
Where do you get continuous sprung steel???
I personally got my steel from Vena Cava designs, but they were based in the UK so they were a little pricy (but the quality was great!). I’d recommend having a google to see if there are any places closer to where you live who specialise in corsetry-making supplies, since quality can be a little costly!
Love this ❤ what sew-in interface did you use? How thick/strong is it?
I used a heavy-weight interfacing, but it depends on the look you want your final bow to have. If you want it very stiff, go for the heavyweight interfacing, but if you want a floppier bow, use more lightweight interfacing instead! 👍🏻
Very well done tutorial, this was easy to follow along with and simple to understand!
I’m really glad to hear that! I worried that I wasn’t making myself very easy to understand 😅
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to explain this so clearly.

You're very welcome! I would love to see your finished bow!
This is great for the Madoka cosplay I'm making, thank youu
No problem! Best of luck with your Madoka costume!
Hello! I don't know if you'll reply since this is an old video, but I wanted to ask what kind of interface you use. Is it the soft or hard kind? :0
Hello! Thank you for watching my video (as old as it is!) In terms of interfacing, I used the stiffer kind because I wanted some really out-there proportions! If you’re wanting more of a soft-looking bow, I’d recommend going for soft interfacing. I’ve also used multiple layers of soft interfacing for making stiffer bows when hard interfacing wasn’t available. I hope this helps!
Such a thoughtful and comprehensive video! I wouldn't have even thought of some of these! Great work love ❤️ small bit of feedback, the music volume drowns out your voice a little bit and makes it hard to focus on what you're saying. You could knock the bgm volume down a few more ticks so we can hear you a little more clearly next video 🥰
Thank you so much for the feedback, lovely! I only just realised that I accidentally uploaded the video before I’d mixed the music lower, that’s absolutely on me! Whoops!
Super helpful!
Thank you so much! 💖
What fabric would you recommend?
Any fabric is suitable for bows! Personally I recommend going with something that has a little bit of body so that the bows want to stand up some easily with the interfacing, so stay away from anything too light like chiffon and organza!
I Love this Tutorial and I love your voice. Ty for this tutorial
Thank you so much! I'm surprised that someone likes my voice, considering my terrible accent! 😅
@@GiorgiaCostumes English is also not my mother tongue. I love accents and your English is perfect
this is so well put together and easy to understand, tysm!
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for watching!
What if i dont have interfacing :,)
You could always try to sandwich some stiffer fabric inside instead! Fortunately interfacing is very cheap to buy and available at every fabric shop I've been to!
This video slay!! Thank you so much I had one question, how did you tie the brooch without damaging the bow??
Hello! Sorry for the late reply, I thought I’d replied to this comment when I liked it! I actually stuck a bit of felt to the back of the brooch and sewed it onto the bow, since a simple pin wasn’t up to the task!
Hello. I just saw your video, it is very well explained but there is one thing I don't understand. 1 minute 30 after the start of the video, you make a diagram with the measurements. what does (5/A) mean? I would like to make Sailor moon cosplay for me and sailor chibi moon cosplay for my daughter. thanks in advance
Hello! I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you on this question! You need to pardon my bad handwriting, it's meant to say S/A which is short for Seam Allowance!
Ok. Thank you
how much fabric should i get if i’m making the front bow and back bow..?
That depends entirely on how large you want the bow to be! If you're making something like this sized bow (like for Sailor Moon) I used about 2 meters of fabric. I'm sorry I don't have an exact answer for that 😅
Thank you, I needed this tutorial to complete the bow on the back of my Karin kakudate Cosplay! Extremely thankful. Happy crafting
You're absolutely welcome! I'd love to see how your bow and costume come out in the end! ♥

Omg increasing the stitch closer to the corner is such a good idea!!! This was really easy to understand! I especially liked the troubleshooting section 😅 I'll be needing those tips the most
Thank you for watching! When I first learnt about making the stitches closer, my mind was blown! My teacher would call that size of stitching a 'fly-shit stitch' 😂
