Long time no see. I promise i've been working. it's just been a slow process. Busy weeks, busy job, lots of burnout. Y'know, the usual stuff. I started out this project with the intention of focusing mostly on the Shadow side of the game, and only doing a quick mention of the Sonic portion's changes. But i was surprised to see more changes in the game than i had anticipated. Plus as usual i end up writing way more than i need to. but that's okay, i think it's more fun that way. Plus we get to hang out together for 2 videos instead of one, what could be better? The shadow video will be my next 'sonic' vid, and it will be what i originally planned it to be before i got swept up by the intrigue of the 2 Sonic's. I'll probably take a short break though to squeeze out a little Nikki video. So that should be fun.
Sorry about the inconsistent voice over in this one. It was recorded in 2 parts, multiple weeks apart. cold season. can you tell which half of the video i was recovering from being sick on?
For the cutscene part of this video, i wanted so badly to take out the background music so it would be less distracting. Here's a little bonus change between the 2 versions. The PS5 Generations let's you turn the BGM off in settings, and that will also mute that music in the cutscenes. Pretty cool. The PS3 version on the other hand also has the option to turn down BGM in the game. The difference though is that it does not affect the cutscenes whatsoever. I ran some of the PS3 audio through one of those vocal splitters that are meant to remove either vocals or music from a piece of audio, and though the process is impressive, it doesn't leave you with a perfect result. And i figured it wouldn't really be right to compare a voice over that has been tampered with to one that is perfectly clean from the source.
I have (what i feel to be) a good title in mind for the Shadow video. In fact, i thought of it long before the game came out when i first seen that reveal trailer. And i'm happy to say the (yet to be revealed) title's statement still holds true after playing it. This video on the other hand... When i made the decision to split between Sonic and Shadow, i had to come up with a title for the Sonic portion. "Sonic Generations: A Blast From the Past, Now in the Future!" was one i had in mind. or a revised "Sonic Generations: A Blast From the Past... Again!". They're not really the most click-friendly titles though. It kinda sucks that even the naming of a video has to be done in some special way to essentially game the system to get a few views. (and usually it is just a few.) It's not that i love those titles or anything, but it has a tiny bit more identity than "What's Different in Sonic Generations?" I'm not even sure i like that one, but it is quick and to the point, asks a question which, idk, maybe some TH-cam scholar will tell you incentivizes clicks, and at the very least it puts it kinda in a similar light to my Origins videos.

My favorite signpost oddity is that in Generations it used Classic Sonic & Robotnik but the 3DS version used Modern Eggman and a beta Classic Sonic Render

Well i'm detail-oriented and i'm expressing my thoughts. i see no problem with it. My overall view of the collection is positive, so there's not much use in shying away from certain talking points.

while i do enjoy certain dialogue and cutscene changes i do miss amy being comically strong

How? It was kinda spot on with how it was the mobile versions of 1, 2 & CD. And although 3 wasn't Taxman, it was in good hands with Stealth. Even the Game Gear games made an appearance in Plus, mentioned at 3:09

Theres no double jump because the air dash.
Sure, but they also let us use the air dash with Square/X/Y button like in Frontiers or Shadow Gens. So a second press of X/A/B could have worked for a double jump. It could have even been added as an optional skill

I enjoyed the video! Glad to see you posting again. Ngl, I skipped the sonic generations portion this time around with my last playthrough. I paid full price for the shadow portion. Can't say it was worth it with that alone, and the issues I had with the sonic portions of the game, I had with shadow. Shadow also felt awkward to control at times too. Especially with some of the transformations. Either way, I did still enjoy the game for the most part.
To be honest, Sonic Generations is ....MID. (This was my first Modern Sonic. Genesis Sonic was better.) (Shadow Generations was PEAK.)

I stopped playing originally because of the broken physics. Did they fix that? If they did, I'd get it.
If anything the dropdash shouldve been a skill for modern and a base move got classic, since classic is the one who established that move and used it more. And its also way more useful for classic. All in all insanely retarted decision to lock it behind a skill

I have never played Generations. I picked it up super cheap on Steam a couple.months before they announced Sonic x Shadow with the last 3D Sonic I had played being Adventure 1. Actually hearing that it's short is a plus for me, I don't have a lot of time to game so short games are nice.
reason why sonic couldn't get on the plat-forms here at 7:04 was because you didn't hold the button down long enough
Yeah, it was just for visual. I wasn't trying to imply that path in Sky Sanctuary is impossible to get through, just that a double jump would make things flow nicer. Now the footage at 6:50 I know for a fact is held down the full time, where it looks like a fully pressed jump would clear it. Also 7:08 is definitely fully held. The water seems to have some effect in this boss fight, but the strange part is if you go into Chemical Plants water Sonic's jump is at least equal to his dry jump.
@@BobbyBionic maybe its how the mechanics work when jumping out of water maybe I wouldn't know because I always stay boosting when fighting perfect chaos but that's just a small theory

35:47 Yeah, this is pretty accurate, as someone that prefers the 2d games. I would also include Mania since I think that's the 2nd best Sonic game. I think they really improved Generations by releasing an expansion with the remaster. It tackles a more palpable story, with more unique levels and a hub world that takes advantage of the controls. That pretty much solves the main complaints people had on this game, which makes it an excellent title with little to complain about.
It's worth noting that on PC, this is more or less the same game with just a few quality of life changes. The original version of Generations on Steam could already be played at up to 4K 60fps, but the new version puts the video settings in the pause menu rather than having a separate configuration program. Other than that, it's really just the drop dash, collectible chao, and the dialogue differences.

I'll be honest, if we were to get a Super Sonic theme in-game, I'd actually prefer both Sonics get a different one. Maybe the Sonic 2 one for Classic and Open Your Heart for Modern? Cuz those were the themes accompanying their first times going Super. (Also, please remove Modern's Autopilot. I wanna actually boost as Super Sonic.)

Yeah exactly. its like they are retconning character growth to try and make these characters static and boring. But even then SA1 already did this arc. and then frontiers did it and now generations act like it some how happened before? Like they can't keep repeating this arcs from SA 1, They need to make up their mind. the reason the story feels so stale is because they aren't allowing the characters to grow properly or to grow beyond this. Like give something new for amy or whoever to do. This is why I like the movies so much because they are actually giving some good characterizations for the sonic characters and allowing them to grow.

You might want to tinker with the color settings on the capture card you used for the PS5 footage. Generations X does have more poppy colors than Generations 2011, but parts of your footage look almost deep-fried. I know PS5 likes to bundle 4K and HDR together- if you turn on 4K output resolution it seems to turn on HDR as well- so it might be that your capture card can't correctly record in HDR and you didn't realize you had it on. Though tbh I'm envious of your inability to tell resolutions apart, my eyes are awful but I'm now able to see the difference between 1080 and 4K with something close like a phone or a PC monitor and it makes it so hard to go back when I need to 💀 As for the game itself, it's a really solid remaster, you can tell SEGA learned from Colors Ultimate/got that sweet movie money to do it right. The permanent drop dash on modern Sonic and the inability to custom map buttons on console does suck, but everything else is awesome! The rewrites... blegh, I don't hate them but I AM sick of Ian Flynn's Sonic Wiki ass dialogue style. Which is super weird because he did the Shadow Generations prologue and game dialogue fantastically. I hope this is just a test and future games aren't rewritten, because if this is what Flynn did to Generations' nonexistent story, imagine how he would fucking ruin the Adventure games or Unleashed oh god. Tho I don't think anyone on this Earth can stop SEGA's death march to erase literally anything anyone could find "problematic" with Amy. No crush on Sonic, no slapstick comedy, no funny "cute powerhouse" thing going on, they took such a lovable character and scrubbed her of her personality, aspects of which people haven't complained about since her portrayal in Sonic X and 06...
Thanks for the tip, i'll look into it. I used the same capture card and settings for all of the footage shown, so the issue would have to be from either the PS5 or the game itself. I know i've turned HDR off in the past, but like you said it could have been toggled on automatically. I use old and new footage of the game in this video, and have noticed some slight differences in how re-recorded sections looked. So it's possible they tweaked some things with the visuals between launch and now, though i couldn't say for sure. Personally, i'm not too worried with Flynn's writing. I don't read many of the comics, but it's my understanding that the writing there is well liked by many fans. And i think both Frontiers and Generations writing is more of a situational thing. Frontiers in a sense is meant to be a fresh start to the series. The movies brought a renewed interest to the Sonic franchise, so Frontiers was the first Sonic game alot of people played since probably Generations. The series has been pretty messy with it's story after the Adventure era, so this was a chance to show some continuity, since many of the boost games feel disconnected from one another. Plus the slower paced island to island format leaves more room for retrospective since there's not a constant in-your-face threat. And then Generations already didn't have much of a serious story, and was already meant to conjure memories of the past, so why not throw some extra references in? There wasn't much on the line anyway. The Shadow portion is a good example as it doesn't have to fit within the scenes that already existed, and there's much more depth with Shadows story already so there's no need to fluff things out with one-liners.
I wonder if you'll see the differences in dialogue between the JP and ENG. The JP version of the Chemical Plant cutscene after ACT 2 is super obvious. Both Sonic and Tails speak of the liquid in Chemical Plant, but the dialogue is vastly different. I'm sure the subtitles only do the ENG subtitles.
