It also includes rare footpage of the mostly forgotten Dereham Rash's Green halt.

    Absolutely brilliant. But why is a DMU from Heacham sharing the station with a Great Eastern Service? You could have quite properly had GEtrains to and from Heacham, or even LNER trains on the ‘main line’ and the north Norfolk branch, but the line had closed before any dmu could have operated the service.

    • @nbc_uk
      @nbc_uk ปีที่แล้ว

      This is because the stub of the branch operates autmoatically, and DMU operation doesn't involved the need for the complicated reversal operations employed at Wells. I had hoped to use a steam railcar, but none were available. Also, of course, this is a film of my model railway layout, so I do tend to run anything that I like! ;)

The clerestory coaches are a nice touch. Trowse Station temporarily reopened in 1989 as trains terminated here which some platforms at Norwich Thorpe were being redone as part of the electrification. Poor connection at Wells, with the DMU to Heacham !

    • @nbc_uk

    How fascinating. Thanks for posting this - I great record of a journey I made many times. Just a couple of points - as others have said, the Heacham branch closed several years before DMUs arrived. Wells trains almost always departed from platform 1 at Norwich Thorpe, next to a plain brick wall. No mention was made of HOW the reverse was done at Wells: The loco would propel the train out of the station towards the signal box where it was uncoupled and moved to the service area and to be turned. The guard in the rear coach then released the brake to allow the coaches to roll down the gradient back into the station to await the return of the loco, by then facing towards Wymondham - I clearly remember watching this procedure.

    Excellent documentary recording an historic mission. Local tradition has it that the first Allied Bombing Raid was planned at Swanton Morley, and the first Allied mission, confirmed in 226 Squadron ORB - took off on 29th June 1942, making it the first time since 1918 the Americans had flown from England. Then on 4th July 1942, the second Allied bombing raid, also took off attended by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Is there any corroborative material to support Churchill's presence that day in Swanton Morley ? Historian Martin Bowman, as always, has excellent detail for Bomber Command sorties flown in June/July 1942, and states categorically that General Dwight D Eisenhower was there that morning... " In June 226 Squadron at Swanton Morley hosted the crews of the 15th light bombardment Squadron USAAF, who being one of only two American units in the UK at the time, and with Independence Day looming, were needed for a flag-waving curtain raiser to the American offensive in Europe. The combined operation involving six Bostons with RAF crews from 226, and six Bostons with USAAF crews, was supposed to be a propaganda coup on Independence day, but three crews were KIA.
