Resize Vintage Knitting Patterns With Me

Hello friends! I have wanted to make this video for the longest time. When I made my video about getting started with vintage patterns I knew that sizing was a huge barrier to me getting started, and that it is with many other people. Surely enough, I got loads of comments and messages with people saying that they just don't know where to start with resizing. I totally understood. Knitting and ...

Getting Started with Vintage Knitting Patterns
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
Hello friends! I have had so many lovely knitters reach out to me wondering about how to start using vintage patterns so I thought I would cover the basics of what a pattern from the 1940s looks like. I also touch on materials required, construction, and sizing. I feel each of these topics deserve their own videos, so I would love to hear your particular questions in the comments below! If you ...

By all means, change whatever you like on a pattern to please your taste and temper. It is just a template, go have fun!
You have mentions so many relatable topics at the end. You are very charming! Best of luck!
Very helpful, thank you.
Maybe a couple of dollars these days for the thread. Thanks for sharing.
When showing all you made , you should try them on. Pressing /ironing them would made your video more interesting. You knit great.
You don't have to apologize about your wardrobe! You have beautiful things and you should be proud that you sewed them!
It would be awesome to see you wear your makes.
I am so in awe of people who can knit.
I've been thinking about summer knitting... but I can't decide on anything : colour, style, yarn,... We'll see 😁
You seem so kind, I love listening to you ! I enjoy sewing my own wardrobe too. And I knit myself a beautiful moss green sweater in organic Shetland wool. I'm now making a linen cotton vest with kimono sleeves. It's a gamble, because I don't own anything like it, so I'm not sure I'll like wearing it... but I'm making it from two coupons (a light cotton canvas and a heavy linen) so I don't feel bad about experimenting.
Lovely video, I really like the colours and patterns that you chose! Would you be open to making a video on gauge and vintage patterns and how to interpret it, how to choose the right yarn and needles etc? I'm a beginner knitter and I want to get into vintage knitting but I'm finding it a bit overwhelming.
Great video! I'm a beginner knitter and I would love to start knitting from vintage patterns, I love wearing vintage clothing but as you said reproduction is not always accessible and I find vintage cuts so much more flattering. Would you say that going straight into vintage patterns as a beginner is difficult? Are there any patterns in particular that you would recommend for someone who hasn't knitted their first clothing item yet? Thanks!
Lovely video. Just wish we had better views of the items either worn or full length photos. Really gorgeous styles we want to see them!
Thanks for the video, really enjoy them! Would love to see your vintage inspired outfit video next.
Great video, thanks (suscribed😊). I live in Chile and the oldest patterns I own are from a 1969 Argentinian book my mom gave me, so not thaaat old. I've also downloaded a couple of 1940s UK patterns but I haven't been brave enough to knit them 🤯 as you said, patterns back then asume you know how to knit because everybody did! My mom, who's 62, was taught to knit by her grandma and in school almost as a toddler...she can read any pattern and understand it immediately! So envious😂
You are so talented. I taught myself to knit and purl, cast on and off but can't do anything else and my processing issues make a pattern all scrambled in my brain. When I retire, I hope to take a class to learn more. I live my life in the 1940s at home and would gladly bake bread, pies, cakes etc in exchange for a knitted sweater like you showed-the screen shows it to be a pale pink wich is glorious! I have yet to find that exchange person in my town, LOL. Thank you for sharing! Take care.
Your channel just showed up in my feed today, so i have been watching a few of your older videos. With regards to your high instep, i have one too and have learnt that you can still knit the sock size for the rest of your foot and just lengthen the heel flap (which also puts more stitches in your gusset). This gives you the extra sizing you need for your instep without compromising the fit for the rest of your sock. I hope this helps you. ❤
That is such a clever suggestion, thank you! I can't believe I didn't think of that :)
I really miss your videos 😢 I hope your okay 👌 I love your knitting videos.
One problem with resizing…if you add considerably more stitches and follow the decreases for the armholes the shoulder seam will be too wide. So you need to work out the size required and decrease accordingly.
This is a very good point, every pattern, body and size adjustment is different!
love all the makes, but especially how you're glowing while talking about it!!
Oh that is so kind of you! Thank you lovely, wishing you a happy end of year :)
I am obsessed by vintage patterns and have quite a collection as i am given them. How do you store them? Some of mine are quite fragile.
How wonderful to have such a collection! I buy A4 sized backing boards and plastic sleeves on eBay which are meant for comic books. They’re archival quality and acid free, and it keeps them dust free and standing up straight in a box so they don’t crinkle. Just make sure the cardboard is acid-free so it doesn’t react with the paper of the patterns. I hope this helps!
Thank you. Xx
Did you make the labels yourself or have them made? I’ve been wanting to do the same thing (with my name, not your brand, don’t worry!) but don’t know how to have them made.
It’s such a fun idea!! I ordered them from Dutch Label Shop. They turned out great, I would definitely recommend getting some made :)
So happy to have just found your channel!😊Lovely episode, lady! I’m looking forward to watching more!
Oh thank you so much for this comment!! I’m so happy you’re here! ❤️
I would love to hear about your wardrobe building process. I am currently working on the long process of crafting my own sustainable and thoughtful wardrobe. I am trying to go slow and make things myself or thrift high quality items as much as I can while making sure that any items I do remove from my wardrobe don't do into a landfill. ❤
I think that’s a lovely idea, thrifting is the best ❤️ I would definitely like to make a video on this, how I defined my style, where I get secondhand clothing and what I choose to make etc. I think it’s also important to remember that the journey is never meant to end, so you don’t ever have to be perfect :)
Really fabulous video and so helpful! Thank you!
Thank you Tara! I’m such a big fan of yours 🤍
I loveeeee the vintage sweater❤
Thank you! :)
Do you have the pattern for the card I you are wearing?xx
1980s patterns are recent enough to be covered by copyright. Unfortunately this means I can’t reproduce them and share them! I hope you can find a physical copy of a similar one :)
Thank you!!🎉
Hi! Lovely episode. You're really inspiring me to try my hand at vintage patterns! I'm in love with the cardigan you're wearing in the beginning of the video - i reckon you can't sell it for copyright reasons. Would you mind sharing the source so I could potentially look for it? I'm really picky with lace and I just love the way that looks.
Oh I’m so glad! You’re right that I can’t sell it unfortunately. It is from a Patons booklet for ‘Brushed Caressa’ 8ply. I bought the booklet from my local op shop :) I love this lace pattern too! There are more close up photos on my Ravelry and Instagram if that would help!
So nice to hear from you again! Hopefully whatever you make for "summer" you don't throw out of your winter wardrobe. I find my 4ply vintage garments are still staples in winter, i just wear them with thermals under or a coat over. In Brisbane i would think they would get more wear that way as it probably is a bit hot for wool in summer? That said, i know i do wear my vintage wool things in Adelaide summer, but mainly the short sleeves ones. I'm really looking forward to seeing how your 3ply knits up. I was thinking of buying some but i have enough stash. I was actually thinking to specifically try the classic because i have found the luxury to be maybe a little too soft and pilly, whereas my hard-wearing british lambswool cones have been producing garments that don't pill at all. Anyhoo, really looking forward to seeing your next project when you are able to get started again!
Hi I love the Bendigo yarn for knitting vintage. I'm in the midst of knitting the Homefront jumper from squidknits. I'm knitting it from the 4ply luxury from Bendigo in navy blue. Thanks for stating the yarn your going to knit in your up and coming projects but also the ply and the color. It really allows me to see the colors and patterns that you have chosen. I love the colors you have picked and those same colors look good on me , so looking forward to your next video.
I love using them for vintage patterns too! The tension is so easy to match with the pattern I want to knit, I just wish they had a better range of colours :)
@@vintageknittingparty I agree more colors please, especially in the 3,4,and 5 ply. I don't think I'd buy 2 ply. 🤔 I love pink but in the 5 ply there's only one offering. I love the colors you choose. I live in the Pacific Northwest USA 🇺🇸 and Bendigo yarn is wonderful, affordable and love quality. I plan to buy more especially if they widen their color range. I did have them included a color chart in my shipment. Really nice because sometimes screens are off color and you might miss a yellow undertone..
I love that they included that! I agree, more nice warm tones and neutrals would be lovely :)
I don't envy you having to decide which sweater to knit first- they're all so beautiful! And yes please, a wardrobe episode would be fab.
It’s such a hard decision! I don’t have any green knitwear so I’m actually thinking of starting with the pistachio shade 🥰 Wonderful, I’m about to move house to somewhere with no built-ins, so if I don’t do it now, I won’t for some time! Thank you for your comment :)
These vintage patterns 😍 just so gorgeous. I can’t wait to see some of this being CO ❤️ you’re inspiring me to knit more and more vintage patterns!
Yay, I’m so glad!! There’s something so special about vintage patterns 🥰
Yay welcome back ! Love the projects and colours you picked and can’t wait to see them come to life! Also, those lemonade socks 😍😍 I’d also definitely be interested in your wardrobe swap video, I love these kind of things ☺️
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment!! I missed TH-cam so much! Haha wonderful, if I can figure out how to film it I’ll do a wardrobe video :) Have a lovely day! ❤️
So lovely to hear your voice again and so glad you're back. You've got so many wonderful projects to cast on, it's very exciting. I'm particularly drawn to Zig Zag lace, it's gorgeous!!! I can't wait to see what you make 😀
Hi Hannah! I am so excited to be back haha! I can't wait to make that one :)
Hi Lauren, currently I am updating my summer wardrobe with crocheted t shirts I cotton/acrylic blend, not expensive from Spotlight. Here in Victoria the heat is rarely as extreme as Brisbane.
Oh that sounds absolutely perfect! I hope you get a lot of wear out of your crochet shirts, they sound wonderful :)
I really like the Knot Front Crop Top as well. 🧶
There’s something so special about it!
Love the colors you picked for your projects. Im also very into the soft light greens and purples and the moment 💜
Aren’t they so lovely? I’m feeling very inspired by all the flowers in my garden at the moment!
Some lovely patterns can’t wait to see them x
Thank you for watching! 🤍
Nice to see you back! ❤
I’m so happy to be back! 🥰
You are awesome, thank you for sharing
Thank you!!
I love your channel. How you done colour seasons test. I think you are winter it will give you loads of colours that will look great on you. Most colours can be worn it’s just the tone that determines if it suits x
Thank you Michelle! I would really love to look into this, so far it’s been trial and error but how wonderful it would be to have a system! I just had a look and I think I might be a winter too :)
Sizing was limited too because, in the UK, rationing went throughout the war and well into the 1950s. There just wasn't as much food around, or cars so everyone walked and a gym was the guy down the road in the Dog & Duck pub. Lol, you are completely right about assuming everyone knew how to resize because knitting used to be taught in schools then and up until the late 1970s.
The thing about the chunky jumpers is most of them are simple knits. Vintage knits are time consuming but they're intricate, beautiful and usually involve a great deal of skill. Anyone can knit a top down raglan sweater on size 5mm with the occasional YO/ssk, what you do takes precision. Be proud of your knits because they're stunning and not following the trend for plain, boring beige. I've just found your podcast and I'm thrilled. Good luck with your aspirational knits and I look forward to seeing more of them.
Oh thank you so much for this lovely comment! I never want to compare myself to others or put down any other style of knitting, but sometimes I wonder why I found such an intricate and time-consuming hobby haha. I'm so glad you've enjoyed my videos so far!
This was so relaxing and beautiful to watch Lauren! 🌸🥰
Oh thank you so much lovelies! 😘
Love your videos, and I really enjoy knitting in your company. Thanks for another great episode!
You are so welcome, thank you for joining me! :)
Just found your channel and absolutely love it! This video is so helpful and as someone who never makes gauge swatches… you have inspired me to the point that I am actually excited about making them now!😂❤
Oh that makes me so happy!! Thank you for your lovely comment Mara 🥹
It’s beautiful, Lauren !! Love the shape of the dress and that colour. And it was so nice to see how much work and thought goes into making something like this, especially for me who has super little sewing experience.
Oh thank you so much, lovely! You're so kind!
Now I really want to knit socks. Do you use 4 needles?
It's so addictive! Some people use 4 double pointed needles, but I've gotten used to using a 9 inch circular needle. They are a bit fiddly to begin with, but learning anything new takes some time :)
@@vintageknittingparty thank you, I might give that a try 😊
So many cute sock patterns!
Thanks Jess! I love your channel, so lovely to watch another Australian knitter 😍
@@vintageknittingparty Aw thank you! Right back at you 🥰
