Back to Alaska
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 พ.ค. 2022
This isn't a reality show about Alaska, it's a show about reality in Alaska! It's not a "how to" kind of channel, and might even be more of a "don't do" kind of channel! It's a slice of a different kind of life as we muddle through creating a home in the wilderness I grew up in. With the lingering pandemic and raging drought crisis gripping the west, we made the big decision to leave Oregon and drive our Skoolie to Alaska to begin working on our own cabin on the remote, off-grid land my family owns on a beautiful lake where we lived when I was a kid. Both of us are life-long musicians, not builders, so the learning curve is steep and at times hilarious! Our adventure begins with hitting the long road in our little school bus along with our cat Pooki, and we invite you to join the three of us for the journey and whatever comes next! Welcome to our adventure!
This (not so) Simple Life Off-grid in Alaska
It's late July and I'm running out of time at the lake! Hustling to finish the caulking, spend time with family, and hunting for mushrooms!

Proceeding Alone: Freedoms and Frustrations of Solo Bush Life
มุมมอง 1.8K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
My friend Nina has gone home, and I'm back to muddling through by myself. Hitting the trail alone and getting on with the caulking job at the cabin the best I can. It's a bit lonely and difficult at times but satisfying all the same. And oh! What glorious trail cam clips I have to share!
The Wonder of These Woods: Mushrooms, Berries, Bears and Moose!
มุมมอง 1.2Kหลายเดือนก่อน
So much to experience in the normal course of a late summer day! I get the water filter happening, search for mushrooms, and finally get some amazing bear clips on the trail cam closest to the cabins! I walk old trails alone and visit my favorite spot on the lake and then get to enjoy the company of twin moose that come to the water for a swim and a snack.
Caulking the Cabin: Working with Permachink and a Bulk Loading Caulk Gun

It's another learning adventure as two old broads dive into the experience of caulking! And as usual, it's harder than it seems like it should be!
A Dangerous Lifestyle: The Risks and Rewards of Bush Living in Alaska
มุมมอง 5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Jon tells us about his near fatal wood cutting accident last winter and we also share some of our favorite "heart attack moment" memories of times our beloved dogs nearly got us killed! All while enjoying the good company of a best old friend, Mama Moose and her adorable calf, the magnificent swans, and the most beautiful days of sunshine yet!
Finding Solutions and Making Progress on the Cabin

Repurposing odds and ends to insulate the door, a frank confrontation with Newman the Annoying Squirrel, and I even show you all how to make Bush Life Cabbage Pie! The episode ends with one of the most amazing scenes I've ever witnessed and it was unforgettable!
Big Little Challenges of Alaska Bush Living
มุมมอง 4.1K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's always something and even simple things get complicated when learning curve strikes! I start the process of chinking the cabin while dealing with random stupid little obstacles; one of which is furry, obnoxious and well...pretty darn cute despite the hardship he brings to my otherwise peaceful existence!
Bush Life: The Means and Methods of Living in the Alaskan Wilderness.

How we cope, what we drive, where we shop and what we buy. Big expenses and thrift store scores on a marathon shopping trip to Wasilla. Rainy days and special days; the loneliness and the canine companionship. The challenges and the rewards, the efforts and outcomes. What it's really like to just live in the off grid wild world of the Alaska bush.
Obstacles and Injuries
มุมมอง 2.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The weather takes a hard turn and it's raining problems! One step forward, three steps back as the process of getting everything worked out, inside and out, continues at the cabin. And please pardon my French!
Battling the Alaskan Bush
มุมมอง 2.5K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jon and I attempt to start clearing a really rough overgrown trail through the bush, I work on clearing more saplings and brush from around the cabin, and I get to witness and film an epic battle between the gulls and a bird of prey.
Unstoppable Me.

It's a steep learning curve for me when it comes to anything mechanical but I'm muddling through and sharing the sometimes hilarious process honestly with all of you as I go! Meanwhile, my sister opens Talkeetna's first real book store, I continue to make smashing progress on the cabin and the trail cams start returning some goodies!
Settling into Lake Life

Making the Cabin Livable
มุมมอง 7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I finally make it back up to the lake and get to work organizing the cabin enough to live in this summer. I find most everything in great shape with one big notable disappointment! The magic of the midnight sun and the wild life around the lake is in full summer swing!
Return to Talkeetna and the Weather is BEAUTIFUL!
มุมมอง 2.8K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm back in my hometown catching up with my siblings, seeing all their summer projects and what's new in Talkeetna this year! The weather is heavenly and I take you around to see some of the less frequented trails around town. We meet the new puppy in the family, and Jon gets Monster the ATV up and running as I prepare to go back up to the lake in the following episode!

Another wonderful episode, the beautiful scenes of nature are certainly breathtaking. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. Going to definitely miss you when you go back to lower 48. Have a great week. Dee
Thank you Dee!
So cool seeing the future! The date on the bear footage was Jan 8 2098 lol
Haha yup that's the one cam I failed to set the date on; was getting swarmed by mosquitoes when I was trying to do it and just said forget it! lol good for you to catch that!
Although the otters are cute as heck, how rude!! That bear was beautiful, the markings and color, so was that a blonde bear fresh from the hairdresser’s? Nice job on the caulking, whoops, chinking, the color of it looks really nice with the logs. Thanks for the entertainment, loved it!
Thank you! Yes the wild life is a constant wonder up there; so cool to catch them on the trail cams! We were thinking there wasn't much bear activity in the area but were proven wrong!
It does look like coffee ice cream 100% :)
AND baby poop! Lol!
Otter Cam was the best! More otters! More otters! 😂
That clip was captured a few weeks after I left and my siblings sent it to me. About 3 weeks ago, Chewy went after one of the otters and got in a fight with it and Jon had to shoot it to save Chewy. Chewy ran off traumatized for a while, but other than that was ok. I have mixed emotions about the otters hanging out!
@ oh no, poor Chewy and John and Otter. Sorry to hear that. Love you. :😘
Do you ever think off staying for the winter just wondering.😊
Eventually yes. When the cabin is 100% tight and I can somehow afford to be up there year round.
Your videos are always informative and entertaining, and your home by the lake is certainly in the most beautiful setting. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much! :)
Wonderful episode as always. Glad Newman is learning the boundaries!!
Yeah, somewhat. It'll be a fresh battle when I get back next June I'm sure!
I heard you say just about out of cocaine and I though what did she say I listened again , propain..
So proud of you for never giving up, what A challenge for sure. There has to be an easier way right. Well done!
Thanks, I appreciate that! It's definitely a tough road sometimes. 😊
Wow, kudos to you and your friend for doing this. Looked to be so challenging but it looks great. Thanks for updating us. Take care, Dee
You're very welcome Dee! I love sharing my adventures with everyone! 😊
Another great video! Feels like I’m right there on that beautiful Alaskan lake with ya!❤ Hope you are doing well in Oregon! You & I are around the same age and I’m just working for a living like you…….but having your great videos keeps me motivated to save and visit Alaska one day! My dream
Thank you! I hope you get there; making dreams come true is of utmost importance as you get older and time goes SO fast! Doooooo it!
Making cookies in the caulking gun with yr spoons. Lol😂
😂
👍🎃
Maybe that mama duck was nervous cuz she lost 4 of her babies lol
Yup, I bet she started out with a bunch like the other family.
do you own a gun - scares me to think you rely on spray - be safe
My brother has many guns that I can borrow...last summer when we were living in the wall tent we kept a shotgun handy.
Oh, I was shocked seeing another video pop up ! I thought the last episode, you'd stated you were back in Oregon already ?
Yes I am but this vlog is not a real time thing; I have a few more episodes of my summer to share. :) The BTA season isn't over until you see me pack up and leave the lake. :)
@backtoalaska6755 Excellent 👌. Tell Ole Jack & Kitty I missed them this year.
Yeah, I think your caulked logs look great too! The young moose was so darn cute, all legs and a big head, mom looked absolutely huge! That dang Newman is something else!
I know! That young moose was adorable! if you focus on it's hooves it looks like a little kid in grown up shoes! It never gets old watching them!
Oooh, Newman!! You did a great job with the caulking. You learn by doing!!
You are so right! You learn something new every day. 😊
Hope your evening goes smoothly, you had a rough day.
It was definitely a long day!
You've done a wonderful job!! Well done you.
Thanks! 😊
If the caulking gun is frustrating, perhaps just adding the calk with the spoon you're using many be easier.
Yup!
Wow
that's an industrial strength caulking gun!
No kidding! 😳
That was a great episode, thanks so much…oh, and ya can’t go wrong with a Nina, I’m a Nena with an e!
You are so right! Love the Ninas! 😊. Thank you for the positive feedback!
A few videos you made a cabbage "pancake". I made some and loved them! Thank you!
Same they were very good. Reminded me how much I like cabbage and have been eating a lot more of it as of late.
Wow I can't believe someone actually took my cooking advice lol! It's really good simple food, right? :)
Cabbage is so good for you!
@@backtoalaska6755 Simple healthy and cheap. I like it sautéed with olive oil salt and pepper then drizzle a little vinegar after it's plated. If you have a chunk of sausage sitting around don't be shy with it put it in it.
Such a pretty bear ❤ I used to love watching the moose swim at Taylor Lake BC where I was a caretaker. 🫎
It just never gets old! Every single time I look out and see one (or two) it's the same feeling of excitement!
👍👍 great trailcam video!!
Right?! So exciting!
Great walk through the woods. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Great to watch another video, I was out at a Lake today with my two dogs, I was thinking about you & guess what, you uploaded this great video. Thanks 👍 the wildlife was nice. Sorry about those black flies biting you. Glad you are doing well and okay, be safe.
Thank you for the kind words! It was a lovely day in the woods!
I would love to take a ride on either of the “wilderness express” I bet the real one goes much deeper into wilderness and has probably seen a moose hunt or two… that’s something that train can’t boast about!!!
Another wonderful video I just love your life! I am a wannabe Alaskan and I get to live it through your eyes. Beautiful wildlife please keep this up all year! Are you planning on going back to Oregon? I would love to see a Alaskan winter through your eyes.❤❤❤❤❤
I agree, love to see a Winter Season, but seriously doubt she'll stay over Winter there. She'd definitely need a wood pile stocked up for sure. I'd think Jack would need to be there during a Winter Season. I love they're place there, the forest foliage and wildlife. Ha, I'm a Alaskan Wannabe as well. Lol😅
I am back in Oregon for the winter again. Not ready to stay year round up there; the cabin's not ready, and we're not financially able to live without income from working. But I hope to be able to stay through the winter next year or the year after if all goes well!
@mitchellTickle1962 you are spot on!
👍🎃
👍🎃
Have some Benedryl on hand for the sqeeter n black fly bites. 😊
Ole lady here, 70. Off grid, water haul, self built cabin on 60 acres here in Northern Arizona. 34 years now. The simple life sure is hard 🥰🤠. Proud of y'all!! Rock on gals 💪. Subscribed 😁. Sending love and light and positive vibes 😘
Thank you! YOU rock on, too!
Holy!!! Black (eye) flies are nasty! Hopefully your eye wasn’t swollen for too long Beth. You guys did a great job on the caulking!
It took 3 or 4 days for it to get back to normal. I hate those little bastards!!
@@backtoalaska6755me too! I had a court case once in Winnipeg and I told the officers I was working with that I don’t do snow and I don’t do black flies. They told me that that leaves April & September - thankfully my prelim was in April and the case went forward in Sept. I lucked out lol
It looks great. You are doing good
Thank you! 😊
Nice job on the chalk ladies!
Thanks! 😊
If you get another leech on you, next time, try putting salt on the leech instead of pulling it. They back off and won't leave as big of a hole or black spot. You're a hard worker.
Oh wow good idea! Thanks!
Congratulations!! That was the worst "video" I've ever seen.
Ladies, you did a fabulous job!! Don't put yourselves down that's hard work.
Thanks! It was definitely a challenge!
We have bull gnats here that do me that way,Vanilla an water sprayed on you keeps them away
Cool! I'll try that next summer!
Good job!!
Thanks!
