I like to make stuff, mostly with wood.
Making an Epoxy River Guitar
Using some leftover wood from Blacktail Studio, I made this Epoxy River Guitar for a customer who recently reached out. I'm super happy with the turnout and stoked that John Malecki made an appearance.

EASY Scrap Wood Project - Better Tool Storage
I built my first guitar last year. It was a Telecaster but I tend to like super strat styles more. Although, the reverse offset Squire Super-Sonic Paranormal is perking my interest.
Telecaster was my first too. I’ve literally never heard of a super sonic paranormal lol I have some research to do now
If I ever decide to build any guitars, the first one would probably be a left handed copy of the 1949 Fender Esquire prototype. It's basically just a telecaster that only has a bridge pickup, and a snake head head stock.
That would be sick! It seems fender is the “go to” for first builds. They make great guitars
I've just put 2 kit guitars together and ready to move up.Been woodworking for about 9yrs now, my dad got me into it and been playing guitar for about 15yrs.(trying to get good at both.lol) Really enjoy watching what kinda giitar you make next.
That’s pretty cool. Kit guitar are a good gateway to get into it. Glad you enjoyed it!
My dude…brilliant!
Thanks man!
I’m going to build one soon. I simply must.
You definitely should. It’s really satisfying
I've been playing guitar for 26 years. I don't know a single cover song. I trained semi classically although self taught, by doing scales, chords arpeggios and finger exercises. You'd never know I am highly technical by my songs, as I believe simplicity works best for telling a story. I play a bit in every genre but mainly folk, and all the hundreds of my songs are geared toward the love of my life. I have probably seventy on my TH-cam channel right now, but they are all set to private and only she can see them. I've used junk guitars and cruddy gear and software just to get em down good enough to show her. Some of em are pretty good though! I heard you say you have other media so if you have FB or insta I can send you a couple. So gimme that information, brother. Now that I'm getting good equipment in prep of my guitar I plan to produce higher quality stuff, and a couple of music videos. Far as wood goes I can do framing boat building and I turn bowls. Never did make any instruments because I consider myself a roughing carpenter at best. I love bowls though and turn em well because the bulk is just sand paper. A nice Maple Burl ends up being pretty wild with enough paper and some bees wax. Now onto some comments on your videos. You narrate very well and the flow is descriptive natural and fits with the background video really well. I'm sure your channel will grow my man! I'm kind of in a hard stint right now in life but next time I'm on the ups in totally sending you some exotic woods left to me from when my father died. Great video.
Wow, it’s inspiring to hear about your 26 years of guitar playing and your dedication to crafting songs that resonate with your love story. The fact that you focus on simplicity to convey emotions is truly admirable, and it’s exciting to know you have so many original pieces ready for your partner. I’d love to hear some of your music-feel free to share your FB or Instagram info, and I’ll send you mine as well! Your woodworking skills sound impressive, especially your ability to turn bowls from beautiful woods like Maple Burl. It’s amazing how much artistry goes into both music and craft. I appreciate your kind words about my videos; I’m glad you enjoy the narration and flow. It means a lot to have support, especially during tough times. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through a hard stint, but I look forward to connecting more and hope that your next phase brings you joy and creativity. Keep creating, and I can’t wait to see what you do with your music and videos!
I used to be a woodworker, but I am now a bladesmith. I still get a minimal amount of woodworking in by making the handles, but not like when I used to make furniture. I also like to play the guitar and would love to win a template!
I’d love to try knife making one day! And you’re entered to win!
Amazing job
Thanks!
There it is! Watching now will leave comment after view.
Awesome 🤘🏼🎸
Una alhaja. Felicitaciones. Sos un orfebre.
Thank you!
I'm a diehard Blacktail fan, and I JUST got recommended this video. You definitely did that wood justice, the end product is a work of art! But i have to ding you - you went through all that trouble and didn't get Cam's opinion!?
Oh I got his opinion, he just didn’t give it until after the video released! He also talked about it when he joined our live video giveaway! Thanks a lot for watching!!
Frickin badass!!
Thanks!
12:48 that auto dial voice threw me for a minute 😅
Gorgeous looking guitars. Also I like that you are a humble builder and dont think your the best. but stunning
I will always be far from the best 😂 glad you enjoyed it!
2nd bandsaw foe definite. A resaw is a separate tool.
Absolutely!
I was just lamenting the algorithm being boring tonight... then it went and redeemed itself with this video. I've now subscribed. Thank you!
Hell yeah glad you’re here 🤘🏼
Can you make a bass guitar?
I can, I have, and I will again!
I love Blacktail, but I’m super miffed why he wouldn’t ship the wood. Especially if Hobbyist was paying. Would have saved countless hours and it’s for charity. Weird.
Well, in his defense…the pieces he donated would’ve had to have crates made for them. He would’ve had to take that time from his business to build crates and locate a good shipper. I was thrilled to meet him in person and see the famous shop.
Love this!
Thanks!
My preference is whatever the Ibanez Wizard II neck is. Plays like butter and super thin.
Agreed!
Did you ever show how to make the jig in a video?
I did not unfortunately. I made a quick cnc file to get the right radius and hole placements. It’s basically just a planer sled with a curve, though. I honestly hated it 😂
Aaaa, your builds are damn incredible! I'm planning to do my first build this coming summer, and watching your videos is just making me more motivated!
Super glad you enjoyed it! If you want a discount on a template kit for your first build let me know.
Criticism of the reveal. 1. Show more of the finished guitar. Both sides. Top and bottom. From many angles. It didn't feel like you showed enough. There wasn't enough pay off. 2. Show the finished guitar earlier. The end screen links covered up too much of our view of the finished guitar. If you show earlier it won't be covered up. It's quite annoying for our view to be blocked. Just show filler content during the final end screen part. Don't move the voice over. It should remain as is in the time sequence.
I fixed it. Should have more of the reveal at the end now.
@@TheWoodenHobbyist It's actually quite a bit better. Placing the end screen links off to the right was also a good idea.
I mostly like the comments about these mistakes and how to recover for them. It actually teaches you a lot about woodworking and had to manage grain like you said.
Best way to learn is messing up!
Very nice build, but the poor maple, binding is not important for me, it is just a gimmick 😅.
Thanks! I like binding for the sole purpose of aesthetics. Hiding the fret ends looks super nice as a close up detail sometimes.
Watching from Aussie, beautiful timber and an awesome build, nice one mate
Thank you!
you make some beautiful guitars
Thanks
In the line of what duty?
I think the coin makes it rather obvious
@@TheWoodenHobbyist Not everyone in the world know what kind of coin this is...
Law enforcement, paramedics, and fire fighters
@@TheWoodenHobbyist Respect and congratulations!
Anything between 14-20" radii feel great to me. 10" is about as round as I'll go and still be fairly comfortable.
Yeah I enjoy the flatter ones as well
20:34 no way! I've never taken the dive into guitar making because shaping the neck scares me. This is brilliant!
even easier with templates!
You're absolutely not crazy to get a second op bandsaw. That's what professional shops do. What's crazy is all the professionals who have the money wasting so much time on machine setup. 8:22
I just wish I had the room!
@@TheWoodenHobbyist don't we all! I've recently been wishing I had gone for the 18 in bandsaw when I bought my Laguna a few years ago. I didn't want to make the mistake of having too many machines and not enough space to work.
John malecki just gave me an 18bX and I may have to knock out a wall to make room lol
@@TheWoodenHobbyist ok but give it to me if you can't make it work
Would love it if I could find someone like you to make / prep a body out of 125 + year old timbers from our house ( built in the 1890’s) Any ideas?
That would be super cool! Maybe some hardware that emulates rustic lighting and door handles
I made it with WoodPrix instructions !
Hi mate. Great video. I have been a luthier for more than 40 y'rs, and have almost always used outdoor PVD glue, and still have 1 guitar i made 30 years ago, and it's still playing strong, and NO glue fail. So keep on using the cheap outdoor PVA.
I appreciate the advice! Thanks!
