ALPACA SHEARING | Watch Our Alpacas Get Sheared For The Summer
Watch the drastic transformation of our three Alpacas, Owen, Ivan and Newton, as they get their summer style. Professional alpaca shearer, Tina, from Tina's Trims, shears all three alpacas ensuring each has their own unique hair-style and is ready for the warm summer days. The alpacas have been growing their coats out for the past year and were in need for a fresh trim.
Do alpacas need to be sheared? Yes! Shearing alpacas is a vital practice that provides numerous benefits for the animals and their caretakers. Some of the key reasons why shearing is important include:
- Health and Comfort: Alpacas naturally grow thick coats of fiber, which can lead to overheating during warmer months. Shearing helps keep them cool and comfortable, reducing the risk of heat stress. Even in Washington, the summers get hot which means the alpacas need to be able to cool down.
- Hygiene: A shorter coat is easier to keep clean and less prone to harboring dirt, debris, and parasites. This contributes to better overall health and well-being for the alpacas.
- Preventing Matting: Regular shearing prevents the fiber from becoming matted and tangled, which can cause skin irritation and discomfort.
- Harvesting Valuable Fiber: Alpaca fiber is a luxurious and sustainable material used in various high-quality garments. By shearing, we collect this precious fiber to create beautiful, handmade products.
The alpacas are captured and flipped on their side before being secured to Tina's custom-built restraint. The animals are not harmed throughout the process and the team takes their time ensuring each animal gets all the treatment necessary. Along with getting their thick coats sheared, each alpaca got a nail trim, their teeth examined and their skin checked for abnormalities.
Alpaca fiber is often compared to cashmere due to its incredibly soft qualities, making it comfortable to wear directly against the skin. Alpaca fiber lacks lanolin, making it hypoallergenic! We plan on sending off our raw materials to get spun into skeins which will then be transformed into some kind of sweater, hat or other clothing item!

    Thanks for this interesting video! I'm struggling to find a reliable tutorial on the internet about the settings to make on the FX-3 before starting to shoot in anamorphic. Could you briefly tell me the settings you make on your camera to film correctly with your 1.6 anamorphic lens?

    • @BellaandNikola
      @BellaandNikola 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! As far as settings there’s no one size fits all. You can treat the anamorphic lens like a normal spherical lens. The FX3 has built-in de-squeeze at 1.33 and 2.0 if I recall. I like using an external monitor for all my filming, but especially when I used these lenses. The Ninja V let me de-squeeze at 1.5, which is close enough to 1.6 that framing was easy. For settings, pick your desired frame rate (24/30/60) and the respective shutter speed (1/50, 1/60, 1/120) then use lighting or the aperture on the lens to get the correct exposure! Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions!

    • @BellaandNikola
      @BellaandNikola 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! I would absolutely skip the 35 and go straight for the 50. I did not like the pincushion distortion of the 35 and if you put any kind of ND filter that is screwed on, you'll get vignetting on the edges of the frame. If that doesn't bother you, then don't worry about it. Since getting the 35, I think I have only used it 2 or 3 times, where I shot about 90% of this project just using the 50! I would also recommend checking out some of the other options on the market - when I got my lenses Sirui was one of the only ones making affordable glass, now there are others that look to be better quality than these ones! Happy shooting!

    So I'm not sure where in the world he's talking about, but at least where I'm from (the US) LGDs are expensive, and take time to train. Nobody would just abandon their investment like that... Also, if herding dogs are being used to herd the sheep, LGDs have to be removed prior to the sheep being moved, as LGDs can sometimes attack the herding dogs, because they percieve them as being agressive with the livestock. So you couldn't just abandon them, because they have to be moved first. So I'm a bit sceptical of this being common practice, at least in the US. Edit: so he deleted my reply, but long story short, but looking it up, most of the LGDs surrendered to sanctuaries seem to be ones who didn't work out for hobby farmers, which makes lot more sense than this narrative.

    • @Mathews4life
      @Mathews4life 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a fact and this happens all the time in the midwestern states , they also have sanctuaries for the ones that are left behind

    • @BellaandNikola
      @BellaandNikola 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Idaho and several other states, LGDs are legally classified as livestock, which gives them no protection from animal abuse. Herding dogs, such as border collies, are not considered livestock even though they also work with livestock. In Blaine County, Idaho, LGDs are used to primarily guard sheep. There are some ranchers who leave the dogs behind, do not spay or neuter, do not feed and generally abuse their dogs. It is important to note, that not all ranchers do this, only some, but those tend to be some of the largest operators in the area. I have never heard of having to move LGDs in order to bring in herding dogs, often times the LGDs can roam a few miles away, and well trained LGDs will not attack their handlers, people nor other working dogs. The dogs that show up at Unega Mountain Dog Rescue in particular, were all rescued in the mountains after being left behind - usually in horrible condition. If you'd like to learn more about the issue specifically in Idaho, check out unegamountaindogrescue.org and see firsthand what is going on there. Thanks for checking out our video!

    • @advena996
      @advena996 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BellaandNikola "properly trained LGDs will not attack handlers, people, or other working dogs" so I think that's a matter of opinion. Given that statistically across the US, the domestic dog is the most prevalent cause of predation, it is valuable to train the LGDs to drive off random dogs near the livestock. (I have personally witnessed LGDs protecting their stock from dog attacks, and it's pretty amazing to watch) Thus, all the producers I've worked with do in fact remove the LGDs first, then move their livestock with herding dogs. Perhaps this less of an issue in your county in Idaho.

    • @advena996
      @advena996 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BellaandNikola to clarify, I am by no means denying your observations. It sounds like you have one pretty terrible producer who isn't spending any time training or caring for their dogs, and is then abandoning them. Which is obviously horrendous. What I am saying though, is that it makes no financial sense for those producers who actually invest in their dogs to then throw them out willy nilly.

    • @BellaandNikola
      @BellaandNikola 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Completely agree on the financial sense! It is mind-boggling. We wish it was just one producer, but it is an issue in Idaho and several other states. A well trained LGD is worth its weight in gold and is cheaper to maintain in the long run than getting new ones. The problem comes from the fact that some producers breed constantly and see this as a "never ending supply" of dogs. Why does it matter if we lose a few, we'll make more. The producers who understand the benefits of taking care of their dogs do better - but change is hard; and we understand that. We spent time in the mountains with the LGDs and saw them deter cyclists and other "threats" but were as kind as you would expect when we came close with the herder/operator. They allowed us close but not too close - they seemed to have no problems with the herding dogs. Fascinating to hear that some operations include moving the LGD before introducing the herders! Feel bad for the person who has to chase a stubborn Great Pyrenees that does not want to leave! Thank you for the insight!

      This is a huge problem in various places around the country and it takes tons of organizations to keep up and help. Additionally, they do not take any owner surrenders, all their dogs are rescued from the mountains.

    Ducks are awesome. The entertainment value alone is priceless. We had our ducks and chickens together.. with guineas too. I had them swimming at 3 days old in a warm water, baking pan bath. As for the mess.. it also helps to keep the food away from the water.

      @@BellaandNikola mine really never got over the skittish thing..though there were a couple I could hold in my lap, once I caught them. Those two ducks had manners.. if they needed to do a duck squirt.. they'd wiggle and let me know. Not a chicken.. they have no respect for a lap. Right around 4 and a half.. 5 weeks, they get to what I call the dinosaur duck stage.. tiny wings. stomping around like little raptors.. with bills. I had a variety of light color and white ones.. easier to see, for me, if they get a booboo.

    Fostering a just over 1 yr old male GP that was surrendered to a local HS. They are very different than any of my other fosters but I am in love. It’s taken about 3 months but the bond is there! Hope to see this film-I think….. 🥺

    How did you end up on 2.4:1 aspect ratio by using 1.6x factor lens on 16:9 sensor?

    • @BellaandNikola
      @BellaandNikola 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I brought the footage into resolve, I de-squeezed the horizontal axis to 1.6 while leaving the y 1.0. This resulted in cropping of some pixels on the left and right of the frame - but allowed for some composition changing in post. I set the timeline resolution to 3840x1600 and it worked for us!

    I had no idea about this awful scenario, the law classification. I am not naive and rarely shocked by mistreatment but I am for worjing dogs such as LGD's. I thought they would be a valued asset?? I follow another YT channel BECAUSE of their magnificent LGD's. They are so well bred, trained and cared for and star of the show. Shepherds in the UK hold their Herding dogs in such high regard as huge assets and loved companions. Why on earth would you not care for and value the asset that is protecting your livelihood?? You shouldn't need a law to tell you to care for your working dog. It's so disheartening that yet again, in yet another scenario, dogs are abused neglected and disposed of. I already support galgos rescues in Spain it seems there are horrors for dogs on every continent. Thank you so much for your work.

      It's important to note that there are so many amazing operations and ranchers who treat their dogs wonderfully! The problem are the few bad ones who are able to get away with poor treatment because of the laws. Those who treat their working dogs great actually see better returns in the long-term and that is what we are aiming to spread awareness about. Tiffany and her team at Unega do amazing work for these animals and we hope to help them be the voice to get the laws changed so the abuse and mistreatment ends and people can be held accountable

      @@BellaandNikola thank you for the reply. Tiffany and the work she does is remarkable. It was your Documentary Trailer that brought me looking for more videos, including this one. I didn't even know what I "saved to watch later:, or what Unega was, I just thought the scenery in the thumbnail looked glorious.. Good luck with the screening at the Sundance Film Festival I hope it educates more people to support a change in the law in Idaho. Thank you

      Thank you for your kind words! We are aiming to bring awareness to the treatment of LGDs in several states in the US. We are beyond excited to see what happens with the screening of the documentary. Hopefully, we are able to get some laws changed!@@Spike-ck5tj
