We're Jenn, Nathan, Miles and Noah and after more than two years of waiting, we've finally picked up our Alto R1723. Our first months with our trailer were not at all what we planned, but we are soaking up the chance to really get to know our corner of the world. We're hiking the trails of California's Bay Area, camping in parks along the Central Coast and trying to train our two cats to be adventurers as well.
We've got a 17ft. trailer, two tweens, and so many parks and open spaces we don’t know nearly well enough. Join our family as we explore our own backyard.

#37 - Stanley Park - Vancouver
One of the highlights of our time in Vancouver was exploring Stanley Park. This one urban park includes forest trails, beaches, views of the Vancouver skyline, public art, wildlife, and some fun sprinklers for cooling off on a hot day. We took two days to really discover some of what this park had to offer, and even then there was plenty we had to save for our next trip. If you're in Vancouver, don't miss Stanley Park. Check out some of our highlights.

We cross the border into Canada, and explore Vancouver. One of our favorite adventures was taking a food tour on Granville Island. We spent two hours with an expert from Vancouver Foodie Tours trying loads of delicious treats from the Granville Public Market. Our teenagers were great explorers, trying everything they were offered on the tour. If you're in a new city that has a food culture with...

Goodnes...what a disorganized mess.
Curious to know where you would store the additional Memory foam mattress… and how much weight it would add to the trailer. Also, did you have your trailer weighed formally at a local weight scale?
Also wondering what size grey and black tanks your trailer has. How often do you have to empty them?
@@paulbarrett8406 Hi Paul, have a two inch topper, rather than a mattress. We roll it up like a burrito and store it across the back bench when it’s not in use. We have not had our trailer weighed, and we haven’t weighed the mattress. Our guess is somewhere between 10-50 pounds.
@@paulbarrett8406 Grey tank for the new models of R series Altos are 92 liters or about 24 gallons. Black tank is 54 liters or 15 gallons. How often you have to empty them depends entirely on how you use them. We’re a family of four, but we often camp in places with bathrooms available to us. In that case we can go at least a week without emptying our tanks. If we’re boondocking, with four of us, we can go a few days before we need to dump. Your mileage will vary.

Thanks for the video. What is the model of the one you installed?
Glad you like it! It’s a Cuisinart Custom Classic TOP 40. Always good to check the size carefully, in case it’s changed or the size of the cabinet has changed.
Thanks for the video.. I love the Safari Condo Alto trailer...good build...great resale value..so overall not nearly as expensive as it seems . But to be honest I would take the 2114 over the 1723 any day...do you homework. The only drawback is it's hard to find a dealer.
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it! And we’re glad you’ve found the Safari Condo product that matches your style of travel. It’s great there are so many options. Recently, the dealership in Durango, CO was approved to start selling the SC trailers. Depending on where you are, that might be closer than Quebec. Happy camping!
Where did you stay while you were there? I love your trailer!! My girlfriend and I have a 'squaredrop' trailer and I was thinking about making this exact trip with ours.
Hi @ansim We stayed at The West Beach Resort, and had a lovely time. We definitely think it’s easier with a smaller trailer, we’re 17 feet and had one awkward turn around after check in. But we loved our time there and would recommend it highly. We hope you have a wonderful trip!!
@@QuailSnailthank you so much!
Hi, what kind of vehicle do you have to tow the Alto?
We tow with a truck, but there are plenty of Alto owners who tow with non-trucks. Some folks have SUVs for towing and some Alto owners tow with Teslas.

Air fryer?
Ours isn’t, but it might be possible. Just keep an eye on the airflow and the heat on the top of the cabinet.
First
I know I’m late but hope you will answer my question. Can you manually raise the roof if needed? Also, there was another Alto owner and he got the cabinet and brings a small microwave with him that he stores under the bed seat.
Hi Carolina, the roof runs on electricity, I haven't heard of a situation where someone needed to do it manually. There are some reset instructions available if it gets stuck halfway up or down, but we have never had a problem. And yes, some folks stash a microwave under their beds and pull it out when needed. I love how creative people get when packing in a small space.
I would love this modification. It is interesting that alto doesn’t offer it as an option.
I'm glad you were inspired!! I would not be surprised to see an air fryer/convection oven option someday, but those do draw a lot of power!
Thanks for showing the bunks that your kids are using. There's not a ton of videos with kids (and I'm looking for them) so thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome! They’ve gotten bigger since we made that video, and they are still comfy in their bunks. :)
@QuailSnail good to know! Pur kids are still fairly small, and I'm considering getting a smaller trailer for adventures in National Parks. Do your cats go with you on those trips as well? How do you manage that?
Oooo NVM, I found video #32! ^_^
@@anbernguarrine1319 We love having our cats with us!! We hope you take your cats with you as well, having other cats at the campground is always a treat. Good luck!!
I love that you're taking your cars with you! I want to do the same when I get my Alto R1723 and would love any additional tips you can share!
Love this! I'm hoping to transition my cat to camping when I get my Alto too. Would love to see more kitty videos.
You travel with two cats... yay! That's exactly my plan too. So glad to hear it's working
We love traveling with our cats!!! We like having two cats with us so they can keep each other company if we are away for a few hours. And of course, twice the snuggles!
*promo sm* 😆
Thanks for sharing. I volunteer at the shelter you adopted Nimbus from. We took care of him until he was ready for adoption. Such a sweet boy. I shared your link with all the volunteers so they could see a happy happy kitty 🙂
Thank you so much Debbie!! He is truly an amazingly sweet kitty, he brings so much adorableness and snuggliness into our family, and he is the zoomiest cat around. He's very proud of how fast he is!! Thank you for giving him such a great start in life, and for your work with all the other kittens too. We appreciate your efforts!!

Very good video well done folks.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!!!
Enjoyed your video! We visited Teton National Park last year and had a blast. We are hoping to get back in October.
Thank you, I hope you can visit in fall, I'd bet it's lovely!!!!
Thanks for the great video :). Really helps me because we are waiting on a R1723, so we are trying to decide the options. One question I have which I haven’t found answer to is. Does the toilet have a flush similar to what is in a traditional home toilet?
Hi Utteema, glad the video was helpful. It's almost like a residential toilet flush. There isn't a tank of water, so the handle is on the side of the seat, and you hold it down for as long as needed to flush the waste.
Excellent video, thanks for the One year on review and Q&A (Thanks from Australia :-)
You are very welcome, thanks for watching!!
Very useful! Where do the electronics (laptops, tablets, game boys, etc.) go? I'm assuming they ride in the tow vehicle, but once camp is set up, where do you put them?
Hi Anita, it totally varies depending on what we've packed, what we're doing that day and what spaces are available.... especially now that we travel with our cats. Usually our tech is close to hand, either in the bunk of the user if we are "at home" or in the tow vehicle if we are out and about.
I'm just going to sneakily get 1st comment
I like the trailer and the bunk. What is the trailer's external width? Thanks.
Hi James. The trailer is seven feet wide, and there's a handle by the door that sticks out an additional four inches.
@@QuailSnail Thanks for replying. I have 2 kids as you too.
We really enjoyed watching this video episode of your adventures in the Redwoods! We reminisced about places we have LOVED visiting in the Redwoods as well as enjoyed seeing Fern Canyon which we have not yet visited in person. Your video episode was wonderful and we look forward to watching more of your adventures!! Cheers to appreciating countless wonders that abound in nature and our daily lives!
Do you know if there is an option for a Convection MW? Also, do you find the refer too small for a family of 4? Thanks
Hi Jerri, I haven't heard of the option to swap in a convection oven. I did a quick scan of the Altoiste Facebook group and didn't see anyone who'd gotten a convection oven straight from Safari Condo. But it's always worth asking. If Safari Condo know folks are interested, they might start offering it. So far we've been okay with the fridge. In our three week trip last summer, we shopped along the way, stopping for more milk and more sandwich supplies. On long trips we also carry a rubbermaid bin in the truck with extra dry goods, more oatmeal, more bread, etc. I suppose it sort of depends on how long you are out for, how far away supplies are, and how many perishables you usually consume. Hope this is helpful!
What a wonderful trip! Hi everyone 👋🐱🐱😍🧁🧁🤗
Nice place. Thanks for taking us along.
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
New friends here. 👋🏼. Glad everything worked out. Looking forward to seeing your travels.
We were looking at the Alto and thought that we wouldn't have enough space, but I think we were wrong. I'm impressed at all the things you were able to pack inside that small camper. We opted for a Casita instead and are happy with our decision. It doesn't have the same wow factor as the Alto when that roof goes up, but it's still cute. Thanks for sharing!
The Casitas are super cute!! I know you'll have lots of fun camping in it. Let us know if you come up with any good packing tips!
Great vid & sweet trailer. We have exactly the same blue-cushioned 1723 except we went with the lighter coloured wood. Re: the bunks, my son is 6'2" and he fits perfectly. That was one of the main reasons we went with the Alto...the bunks are perfect for tall kids. Of course the fact that it fits in the driveway and I didn't need to buy a truck also counts in its favour :) I think the only reason to go 1713 is if both big folks are tall and they want to sleep in a twin configuration. If you like to sleep together, the 1723 gives you the indoor shower with no real sacrifice. We've only done a few weekend warrior trips since we got it last fall...we'll take your advice and get some kind of mattress topper before we embark on our epic Rockies adventure this summer!
Hey Alto Twin!! Good to know that the bunks work for even taller teens. Ours are growing each and every day. We did end up getting a memory foam topper we used for a week long trip in February. Game changer!! We’ll do a short video about it soon. Hope you have a great trip this summer, and happy camping!!
It would be more informative & interesting if you showed & talked more about your experience in using the Safari Condo. How was the experience using the trailer camping?
Are you sure the toaster oven won't be a fire hazard? I do know some toaster ovens get pretty hot on their exterior sides. I like the change but I'm wondering how well it's working for you with it getting too hot. :)
So far, it hasn't been a problem. We've toasted plenty of bagels, and even done longer cooks, up to about 20 mins without setting fire to anything. The cabinet gets warm, but so far that's all. We've been very mindful about venting space in the back, as Nathan mentions in the video.
How is your Alto in sub-freezing temperatures?
We haven't done any subfreezing camping in it, though we've dipped into the thirties, certainly. Safari Condo describes it as a "three season camper." Lots of folks winterize their Altos in the coldest months for storage, but we're in the parts of California that rarely freeze.
Thank you for your reply.
Thanks for sharing. Do you have an induction stove installed?
No, just the toaster oven. It's a pretty small space.
