Birding with Telescopes! SeeStar S30 and Red-bellied Woodpecker
Today I used the @zwoastro's SeeStar S30 Smart Telescope to do some birding as it's minimum focusing distance is ~6m (a significant improvement over the S50's 26m minimum focusing distance) to image a Red-bellied Woodpecker that was visiting my backyard birdfeeder. I also got some chickadees and a white-breasted nuthatch but the woodpecker is rare for me to capture.

In this video, I’m checking out the @zwoastro's SeeStar S30, the new, compact afforable smart telescope from ZWO, which has been a hot topic for astrophotographers. With its $350 price tag, the S30 is currently one of the most affordable smart telescopes out there, but is it worth it? I am a complete beginner and still in the "research" stage of my possible new hobby. The S30 seems to be absolutely made for people such as me. When I started to look into astrophotography I was trying to imagine what I would need, what kind of camera, what kind of telescope, how to connect the two, how to find what I wanted to photograph etc etc. But with these amazingly compact and smart telescopes I get all-in-one package for the measly price of $350, which is amazing to me. I can see it´s not for everyone, many people like to get into the more technical side of things, to figure things out more, to mix and match perhaps and so on, but not me. Being able to spend an hour or two getting things set up to capture a decent enough picture, getting a foot in the door so to speak. If I wouldn´t get any further in the hobby that´s fine, at least I wouldn´t have spent thousands of dollars and then found out it´s not for me. Don´t really have any questions except for one which I ´m pretty sure is quite dumb :) What do you mean when the moon is out/not out? Because I´m sure the moon is always out if you can see the sky.? Or are you talking about it being full/waning etc? Thanks for the video, very interesting to see the process you´re going through as you go, some things working and other not as well. A really good intro into the S30.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sigurd, thanks for your in-depth comment. You are right, the S30 is the perfect telescope for people like you who want to do astrophotography but not get into the nitty gritty technical stuff (or inflated budgets) of large telescopes. The wide field view is also nice for a lot of beginner astrophotography targets such as nebulas and large galaxies which gives it an edge over its larger S50 brother which is designed more for smaller galaxies targets. As for the moon, it slowly orbits the earth every 28 days (while the planet rotates every 24 hours) so it actually moves through the sky easterly a little bit every day as well as the phase change. This results in some nights around “new moon” where it’s not in the night sky (or very dark) which we can image without its reflected light. Currently the best time for Astronomy without the moon in the sky is around the end of each month in 2025 (around the 29th of the month in January slowly moving to the 19th day in December as the year progresses).

      Yes, sometimes you have to pick your best targets for your sky and the night. Best results are looking straight up (to almost 90 deg as straight up doesn't work well for alt-az mount, you'd have to swap to equitorial mode for that).

At the moment Orion Nebula and other objects as the night progress in the south east (north east if you are in the southern hemisphere) this time of year. There is always a lot North (northern hemisphere) or South (Southern Hemisphere) you can also check out depending on your field of view from your location. Also Jupiter is up at the moment, that's worth a look!

    So does the Atlas have all of the Messier, NGC and Caldwell objects in its inventory and is the Dwarf 3 capable of photographing all of them too?

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It appears they have the Messier, NGC, and part of the IC catalogue. I don’t know the exact count but the NGC catalogue has a lot of objects (honestly I stopped scrolling to find out when it ended). There are C (Caldwell) entries in there as well but there isn’t a specific Caldwell list yet. But they are constantly adding things to their Atlas (I did another 123MB download today to add to it) so they are constantly improving it compared to what it was in this video. The Dwarfs can image anything in the night sky, however recognize that a lot of IC, NGC objects are quite small for a wider field setup like the Dwarfs, to get really good images you’d need a dedicated system as I don’t know of any “smart” telescope system that goes past 500mm optics as they tracking and mount really would need to be dedicated German Equitorial at that point to track well.

    I used to own a used Celestron 8" telescope some 30 years ago. It took time to set up the tripod, wedge, and scope then align it. One major problem I had was that the views were less than spectacular. Very bright stuff (e.g. Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters, double stars) looked decent. Nebulae and galaxies just looked like puffs of smoke. Very quickly, I realized I needed to photograph stuff to have any resemblance to what I saw in magazines or on the internet. This, of course, needed a camera - an additional expense, and developing film :) . I also needed an atlas and had to hunt down what I was looking for (half the fun of astronomy). The Celestron 8SE is better with automatic tracking. Having said that, you still see images like in the old telescope. You still need a camera - now one that can replace the eyepiece but... it needs to connect to a computer/laptop with stacking and enhancing software - another expense. It becomes an expensive endeavor adding hundreds or thousands of dollars to the cost of the telescope. This Dwarf 3 makes all this MUCH easier. Using telescopes, especially away from your house, becomes a matter of weight and size. Sure, a 14" telescope is nice, but weighs alot for the scope and mount, needs room in your car, and may require 2 people to set up. This scope is very small and only weighs a couple pounds - even a child can do it. It naturally photographs stuff to your phone I believe. With stacking, it can image lots of stuff directly. If you want better images, you can use a PC and software, although recommended, is not necessary. It can also take terrestrial images and has other features. Just imagine what it would take to drag an 8" telescope somewhere on an airplane as opposed to a carry-on.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely! While my other scopes can handily beat this in a shoot-out the cost is easily 10x and requires a lot of careful adjustments and planning; and its not even fully automated yet (yikes!). This is 100x easier to use and get good results and I'm playing around this week with the automated planner and its pretty much set-up and it will go all night, and then the next night, etc... only clouds seem to stop it (which I have tonight with some rain).

      I’m sure the Dwarf V will be amazing, alas it’s likely a few years off so this is the unit we have today to consider. And it’s likely the best bang for your buck right now.

    @13:11 If that's the actual quality of a moon photo then they might as well hide that feature because that blurry picture makes me doubt the overall product.

    • @universewonders1
      @universewonders1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its normal, since it is only 30mm the resolution is very low. This "telescope" is only good for bright targets and large ones, hence why they always show andromeda and orion as examples, every other target is difficult with such a small aperture and altaz configuration

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a 30mm lens and they went wide, that’s a trade off compared to larger telescopes, everything is smaller and less pixels, but you’ll get more “full” images of most beginner DSO targets.

  • @otrondal
    @otrondal 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What is the resolution, "/pixel ( 2.4"/pix would be nice ). And you can take a picture of a crying child, much less than 6m (recomended).

    Is it worth getting this over the S50 or should I go for the Dwarf 3? 😊

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The wider field of view, extra camera, improved sensor, lower price - I'd pick the S30 over the S50 (dispite the lower resolving power). Between the Dwarf 3 and the S30... if you can afford an extra $150 (+42% in cost) then the Dwarf 3 with its larger optics, 4K sensors, and equitorial mode is notably better.

    • @turmanlegalsolutions
      @turmanlegalsolutions 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I found the S50 available new for $390 from a US retailer. Assuming this as the price, does this change your recommendation?

    • @mrtransistor6173
      @mrtransistor6173 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dwarf 3 provides a lot more features and is also useful for terrestrial stuff. Great for panoramas. They're also planning to add Indi and Ascom driver support. Though, ZWO have superior optics.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @turmanlegalsolution - I'd still likely lean S30 because of the wider field of view (having used the SeeStar S50 all summer - video coming soon), but it would be a coin toss at that price and either telescope would be a good pick.

    • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mrtransistor6173 - Yeah, the Dwarf 3 has more features and they keep updating the APP with more capabilities that make it a truer "telescope" than the SeeStar series, but for people who value "ease of use" SeeStar has it in the bag.

You may also use the star map mode to select celestial targets; frame the target and press thego-to icon (looks like axsmall telescope - appears alongside the name of the item) hope that helps ! @@EmberSkyMedia well they cracked some equations and then they can tell you where to move the scope in EQ mode to align it.. it's super convenient; where those automated scopes were lacking is really the ALT/AZ which means too many images of low quality / high noise. But in EQ mode, you can probably go 30, 60 or even 90s. That's more than enough is the camera is clean to get a great signal. As I said, if i was starting from scratch or trying to interest someone to astro without facing the wall of issues and difficulties, I would cleary recommend that too
