Dude, so I just picked one of these up off FB Marketplace, but the mesh and one of the poles is missing. I’m dying to try it out but using it in SC without the tropical conversion would be brutal. You know where I can find spare parts. I already contacted Wiggy’s, but no luck.
Awesome 👍!!!!. Are the zipper teeth the large teeth on yours?.
Interesting stove and mess kit , Scotty, have a great week, thanks for sharing YAH bless brother !
@@MichaelR58 Thanks Michael it's definitely the most unique mess kit I've come across. YAH Bless brother🤗💯
It'd definately fit in an Australian Bottle cover. Ours are like a dense cotton wast felted lining to insulate. Same shape but canvas. It will stretch or shrink by wetting it if needed

The thing that makes it larger is the stove on the bottom. If you removed the stove part the two kits would be close in size.

That wax block possibly being used as fuel is a brilliant flame extender. Have you considered attempting to burn wax inside an alcohol stove to cook larger meals?

Interesting. I saw a video of the modern PLA mess kit and it's pretty neat too. My guess is that the Red Chinese kit [prior to getting the stove bottom attachment] was based on the WWII Imperial Japanese Army's Han Gou, [rice cooker]. That kit was copied from the German M31 Kochgesshir, but deleted the handle on the top pan, and had shallower pans. Officer's kits were rectangular, [like the French one on your wall], while the rank and file had kidney-shaped kits. I don't own one but I've seen videos.
@@HootOwl513 I've seen the PLA kits your talking about. Those seem to pretty nice made out of stainless steel. I'm going to have to look up that Japanese kit though. That's interesting. The mess kit is on the wall is actually part of a CZECH field kitchen set I have. Hey thanks for the info and watching 😎
@@scottysurvival Oh, OK. I thought that was the French pre-War mess tin. It was not unlike the German M31 but rectangular, not kidney shaped. After France fell, Germans issued some to their troops, before retooling for Wehrmacht gear. Must be distortion from a laptop screen. I do have that Czech Officers' kit, with a cutting board and KP utensils on the top, and three nesting Pots/Frypans, like a Russian Doll. I've been busy since I got it and haven't played with it yet. Looks about right for car camping with a Coleman 425 stove on the tailgate. There's also a French officers mess set [sold by Sportsmans' Guide as Italian] that has a giant two gallon oval bucket, lid, roaster pan with side handles, two half-span D-shaped cake pans, and another pan. One Christmas Eve, I made a Cioppino [fish stew] with vegetables, tomatos, diced potato, halibut, shrimp, clams, mussels and lobster. It was grand.
@@HootOwl513 o yes I did some cooking with and show n tell with the kit in my last overnight video. I've seen those Italian mess kits look pretty nice

never seen one of these looks great
@@philliplewis-pm1ln I believe it's a hidden gem for sure 😃
That Mess Kit is a new one to me. Am looking forward to a field test please. The Wax Block? Best ask the the Sender. Size? Take away the bottom Burner Section and the two Mess Kits look to be pretty similar in size. Fuel? Alcohol-based Gel or Liquid Fuel. I live in Switzerland and would in my case, just use a small metal container as the burner (the bottom of a soda pop or energy drink can works fine). Filled with Alcohol Gel Fuel ('Sicherheitsbrennpaste' / Safety Burning Paste) and popped into that receptacle in the stove section, it will provide enough heat to boil water or cook just about anything one wishes. The brand available in Switzerland is extremely clean-burning .. being the Swiss go-to for their indoor dining table cheese fondue evenings (during Winter, a Swiss National Sport 😏). Liquid Alcohol-based fuel works just as well. Fill the burner with Ceramic / Glass Wool to reduce the risk of burning fuel spillage and Bob's your Uncle. A strip of tightly-rolled Carbon Cloth stuffed into the burner works just as well. Something else .. Aluminium, Food and a High Heat don't make for good Companions. Solution .. control the Heat and Stir, Stir, Stir 😁. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
@@thomasmusso1147 it's awesome. I only discovered it recently. A hidden gem for sure. I plan on using alcohol or trioxine fuel putting tin foil in that circle spot on stove to make clean up easier. Thanks for the info and watching 😎😎👍
The writing on the side translates to one unit per hundred men

The MK. 2 Model is simply a kick in the guts and a bowl of rice
Nice. Ya I have also liked those, but never have pulled the trigger on one.
Scotty the soap is used on the bottom of the pot before cooking. Its an old way of helping to keep it from burning. There is so many things that have gotten lost because of modern tec.
Thanks for the info. Definitely has multi-purposes from what you all are telling me. Thanks👍
@@scottysurvival your very much welcome but don't listen to everyone but from knowledgeable people with the right information to help you in the long run.
Alice pouches are tighter than molle all surplus now
The wax is probably shaved off with a knife and is used for cooking
I'm going to try that for sure. Thanks 👍
I do love me a nice mess kit. Good find! Looking forward to seeing it in action
@@OliveDrabAlliance o yes me too. I think I might steam some veggies in it and cook rice in the jungle oven on my next overnight in the foxhole. Thanks for watching and commenting 😎
Maybe the wax could be rubbed into sticks to help ignite them. It would work I think. I have ignited Kiwi shoe polish in the can. The wax in crayons burns when there is paper on the crayons.
@@lonnieclemens8028 ya that would work for sure. I did ask the seller he said it's used for cooking just the wax by itself, but wasn't made for my mess kit, but should work.
Great review Scotty 👍 can’t wait to that thing in use 👋🏻 god speed my friend
@@foxriverbushcraft2345 thanks hope all is well. Keep it up your doing great with your channel 💯👍
I think the size difference is mostly because Western armies rely on compact, freeze dried foods that just require adding water and warming up. The Chinese army at that time still relied on rice with fresh vegetables added that required cooking. The wax block may have nothing to do with the mess kit. My guess is that it's for waterproofing web gear etc. Thanks for the video.
@@johnndavis7647 interesting. I did finally talked to the seller he did say that the wax is used for cooking, but was not specifically made for this mess kit but should work.
Cleaning your cups canteen nice and shiny is not benificial, except in the Army. Sure if its sooty and will transfer wipe it off. If not just leave it. In summer the hottest car in the sun is a black car. Blackened cookwear will boil water quicker and use less fuel. Call it BS if you want. I have trialed it, it is a little quicker. Mors Kovanski ( forgive my spelling of his surname ) also said the same
@@davidleonard1813 no it totally makes sense. I know of morse kohanski he was a great survival instructor. Thanks for commenting I really appreciate it and for watching as well 🤗💯👍
@scottysurvival Well thanks for that. I have commented this before and it started off a long winded discussion argument of hundreds of mostly nay sayers. Entertaining to watch lol
@@davidleonard1813 o yes I understand. Not on this channel. I clearly see what your saying makes sense. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the vid😎💯👍
Very interesting. The Chinese steam a lot of foods, so the steam grate makes sense. I've read that scouts used bar soap to rub on their pots to keep soot from making the bottom black. I never tried it. Thanks for sharing.
@@OKBushcraft that's very interesting. Thanks for the info brother 🤗💯👍
I was at Philmont Scout Ranch in the NM mountains in '64. Back when the cast aluminum Dutch Oven was considered the ultimate in lightweight camp gear. We had this industrial powdered soap called Tetrox. We made a paste of it with water and doped the bottom of mess kits when cooking over open fire. You didn't wanna get any inside, or everybody eating from that pot would get the ''Tetrox Trots.'' I guess bar soap would work too.
Dish soap rubbed on the pot before cooking will help wash the soot off.
The Vietnam vs China war directly led the Chinese to start realizing that the SKS Type 56 was not quite up to snuff when the Vietnamese were general issued the AK series rifle. This led to not only some interesting firearms based on the SKS with removable magazines but more AK Type 56 being issued and the development of the Type 81 to replace both the Type 56 Rifle and Type 56 Carbine (I think the SKS was referred to as the rifle and the AK was the carbine) as well as the Type 63, among others that had been developed in small production runs.
@@turtlewolfpack6061 interesting thank you for the info. I've seen sks's with the detachable magazines on them. Wonder if because of what you said is why they made a high capacity magazine for them.
@@scottysurvival it is, the Type 63 looks like an SKS but really isn't just an SKS D and is a true experimental stop gap. They already had the Type 56 AK in full production but this era spawned some neat oddballs pre Type 81.
@@turtlewolfpack6061 Nice 👍. Thanks for the info. Hope all is well over and up your way😎
@@scottysurvival things are as well as they can be! Full steam ahead and damn the torpedoes!
I suspect you should be able to use one of the plates with the cooker.
