📝 Let's park the goal-setting we discussed in the last episode because Christmas has hurtled towards me and taken me by surprise and I'm sure that if I don't have the bandwidth, you don't either. We'll come back to it next time.
📰 Instead, let's talk about something in the news that has made me realise how wrong I was, have been and will continue to be unless I do something about it...

I am the first to poo-poo manifestation and all the plinky-plonky performative nonsense that sells itself as 'self help' but I've come to realise that goal-setting, particularly after a challenging 2024 might be a very smart move on my part. The power of the re-frame is something to explore in this episode of the podcast. I've set the bar quite high for myself in the past, especially professionally, and this year has been about relaxing that tight grip on 'success'. However, it has been a puzzler simply because a lot of the positive steps I've taken to relieve some of that pressure are the things I'd do when I was struggling with d...

Thanks for wasting my time b
I understand the point you are trying to make, but I believe this is not the most suitable example to support your argument. I’m confident that many of the people criticizing BL for her behavior understand the fundamental principles of feminism and (internalized) sexism. Blake was acting as a bully, not as a feminist. The truth is that they are probably both assholes.
I agree with you that they are both likely not the greatest but she can still be an A-hole and have been mistreated. It's more our instinct to assume the worst of women that struck me in this case.
Loved your habits series a few years ago, so would love to hear your plans for a reset. Fellow Christmas baby and I think having birthday, Christmas and New Year together means too much reflection in one go
I totally agree. It's too much at once. I was in a real funk but making this time to plan has really helped me.
Your view point has always been amazing to me, and i'm sorry people are such d*cks. I left facebook because it just became a cesspit or negativity. Your episode with James Smith was awesome, I follow him too and think both of you approach weight loss with honesty that people just don't want to hear. Your peice about the body positivity movement is how i've always felt (i'm not a small person and have struggled with my weight my entire life). You also did an episode (or wrote a piece, can't remember) about toxic positivity which resonated so much because life is not always sunshine and rainbows; let me be sad sometimes, it's human! This particular episode, again, is something people just don't feel comfortable with and I for one appreciate it. I just want to say thank you! Keep doing what you're doing xx
I really appreciate your feedback, thank you so much!
I couldn’t agree LESS! I listen to his podcasts with these experts regularly and many others featuring similar guests. I have NEVER have taken away that one simple lifestyle change can cure anything! That is a complete misnomer. If you actually listened to these podcasts they talk about the plethora of complex environmental triggers that can lead to someone receiving a cancer diagnosis (or any other diagnosis for that matter) and therefore they require an equally complex blend of treatments to cure them. It’s never one size fits all. Remember, often these experts are exactly what they say they are… experts in their particular field who are really, honestly and with complete commitment integrating allopathic medicine with natural therapies to treat all sorts of diseases. We have become obsessed with this term mis/disinformation in the last 4 years. Never mind the fact that there is zero data to ever back up government claims of misinformation. They just discredit, dig up dirt and blatantly lie. IT’S NOT DISINFORMATION ITS JUST INFORMATION. It is incumbent on YOU to use your brain to assess it, like you were taught at school. It’s called critical thinking and is in direct opposition to wilful blindness. Were you aware that the exact same day the BBC broke the story on DOAC the US FDA revoked the licence for the mRNA RSV trial in children due to alarmingly high serious adverse events? I wonder why they published nonsense disinfo stuff about Steven B instead??? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what’s going on…. Don’t look over there look here instead! WAKE UP YOU LOT THEY DO NOT HAVE YOUR HEALTH INTERESTS AT THE TOP OF THEIR AGENDA!
only just discovered you and your show. .. there’s a lot to unpack. birthdays aside .. here’s hoping there’s time to do it.
TBH I find goal-setting unrealistic for the most part. I am loathe to say them ('said' goals) out loud, as I know myself too well and would probably fail spectacularly at each and every one of them. The only thing I know that I can commit to (which my GP told me that I absolutely need to do, due to dehydration) is commit to drinking more water. I have set up an early morning system which involves chugging a 650ml bottle of water when I wake up, just as a start. I hate it but it has made a tremendous difference to the amount of energy I now have. Yes, it's boring but I'm not knocking it. Baby steps with 'realistic/achievable' goals are the way to go. And by the way.....a very Happy Belated Birthday Emma; hand on my heart when I first started watching you a few months ago, I thought you were in your 30s!
I love this! I too have paid attention to hydration recently and have added electrolytes into my daily routine and, like you, have felt a vast improvement in energy levels as a result.
You are always so honest and insightful Emma. That is why we keep listening to you! I have been listening to podcasts for about 8 years and too have seen a change, not always welcome. The podcasts I listen to most are probably How to Fail, The Rest is Entertainment, The News Agents, and yourself. Others such as Table Manners, Happy Place etc will depend on the guest or subject whether I listen. Whilst some of these are heavily produced, they feel like they come from an authentic place! Some time ago I unfollowed some of the podcasts and social media accounts that rely on the click bait thumbnails - glad that some of this is finally being called out and thank you for not shying away from discussing this subject. Some of the guests you have had have been amazing and the discussions really stuck with me (Jen Sincero comes to mind). I have really reengaged with your podcast recently, sometimes on apple podcasts, sometimes on you tube - I am loving your honesty and reflections. Keep doing what you are doing! A random podcast recommendation if that is allowed is the History Chicks - definitely worth a listen for anyone interested in women in history!
I am definitely going to check out History Chicks now. Thank yo. And thanks for your kind words about the show and for your continued support. Jen Sincero is one of my fave interviews too because she wasn't looking for adoration, fans or follows, she just wanted people to benefit from what she'd learned.
I fell asleep listening to these two lovely ladies 😄 I have been aware of Caroline for a couple of years and i find it a shame she isn't more well known. Shes very down to earth.
On your recommendation I finally got myself starting the exercise videos from Caroline Girvan. I’ve found that I like the structure of it. Like you said, pretty quiet during the workout and none of the cringey pep talk haha. The preview of the next move is good too. It’s great that she has a range of videos types and lengths. Hoping I can keep it up ! Defo thanks for the recommendation.
I am so pleased to read this. It's such a good channel and I can't think a single video of hers that I haven't thought was brilliant and done again. Thanks so much for letting me know these worked for you too!
I agree emphatically with the listener who insisted that what you're doing now is great. Properly structured and well chosen interviews are, of course, phenomenal. But as you say, you've spent years speaking with others - this confers not only the skill of interviewing but also the enrichment that naturally follows personal encounters with myriad perspectives. That is, you are equipped to offer valuable insight/perspective on a variety of subjects. Both because of the interviews and your own personal experiences. Whether it's a vlog or a video/podcast like this, it's fabulous content. You don't have to have the right answer, or an answer at all, to make meaningful contributions. All the best to you
This is such kind feebback, thank you so much.
A hello for the algorithm. I actually listen via my phone’s podcast app.
This is so interesting! Glad you found the show!
I genuinely thought inappropriate comments about or towards women were a thing of the past but how wrong I was. Men are constantly making derogatory or homophobic remarks on the women’s football pages, it’s like they’re threatened and feel emasculated by strong beautiful women who play a sport that they claim is theirs and hate the fact that some of them prefer a female partner. I just challenged a man on I’m a celebrity fan page who stated his sexual fantasy about Colleen which was followed by several other men agreeing or supporting this. A few women tore them to shreds but had one woman condoning it which is why it’s still happening. Women need to be supportive of other women and challenge men that think this behaviour is ok. We’ve come a long way so let’s not lose our power.
I 100% agree. As a woman, you don't realise your role in this and I suspect that's why it's why a lot of the women who speak up are older. They've seen it all before and can see how to stop it and call it out.
Hi Emma, I’m a fairly newcomer to your platforms and just wanted to say I enjoy your content and find you very engaging. I also do not condone Greg’s behaviour and have described it as Benny Hill ish, very school boy playground stuff and although I have never used the term “read the room” I do think it applies to him and he just doesn’t do that. I was planning on visiting London myself today and I’m exactly the same with my phone, only getting it out if I’m in a shop, why do so many people make it easy for the thieves? I totally believe social media is to blame for my short attention span, I would never had watched TV whilst scrolling through my phone, my other half moans but I could look at it as being quite a skill 😂 Anyway keep up the good work and your top looks great ❤
I love this! I agree with you re: Gregg and I'm so interested in your experience of London and phones too. Thank you so much for watching!
Loving your content. X
Thanks so lovely to hear! Thank you so much. xx
Actually JUST finished Stolen Focus (fresh after Magic Pill - both phenomenal). I've heard someone suggest the audiobook with print combo before but have yet to give it a go. I've been on a bit of an audiobook kick so I may just try it. All the best 🖤
Johann's research is, in my opinion, phenomenal. Yes, give it a go and let me know if it enhances the experience and/or information retention.
Love the top and the bag 😂
Thank you! The bag is from Next, would you believe, and the top is Albaray.
It’s really nice to hear how respectfully she refers to Aslan 😊
Is this a skin care channel?
Sometimes.
Do you have an Only Fans?
No.
You are such a voice of reason Emma; I don't think I would have the patience to be so polite in your response/s. As you, if I don't like someone's content, I stop the video and move on. Simple!
Hi! Thank you so much. This is kind feedback. I try, wherever possible, to approach the criticism with a compassionate point of view. Assuming there main be pain behind the pointed comment - which there often is - as I don't want to start a fight but rather disarm someone who has shown up with an aggressive or pointed agenda. Really appreciate you engaging with the show!
Here from the podcast to leave my comment. Dear Emma, from another Emma - Your voice of calmly reasoned analysis is appreciated, and I am glad you chose not to ‘hire’ that ‘Editor’. I think there’s a scale along which benign ‘take it or leave it’ social influence is found at one point, but direct ‘don’t do that’ authoritarian CONTROL is way out of line. Keep doing you, this was a great example of holding onto your personal values and boundary in the face of an unreasonable critic who was trying to displace responsibility for managing their own feelings onto you. Enjoying all the topics you cover but am especially interested in your fashion stuff as I’m currently in such a boring rut 😆 Best wishes! 💪🏻
Emma, I love how you've phrased this and may have to steal it. 'Displace responsibility for managing their own feelings onto you' is exactly it. Someone today left a comment on my food video saying they couldn't understand why I used protein powder when other protein sources are better and I just thought 'that's a YOU problem'. So it's nice to hear how you put it in this comment. I'm thrilled you're enjoying the content and I'm also delighted you've commented on the video. Means a lot. Thank you so much!
What a great guest!
Thank you so much!
I love all your solo episodes…
This is such lovely feedback. Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching.
My husband is a Psychotherapist and he has plenty to say about Coaches. Here in Australia it is an unregulated industry and any Tom, Dick or Harry can call themselves a Life Coach or even a Therapist. Some have no qualifications whatsoever (apart from a weekend seminar in the Blue Mountains) and yet they feel they have the necessary experience to try to change or influence someone else's life's journey. Some have no insurance, or are even aware that you need it.....I could go on. I am NOT saying that every Life Coach or Therapist should be tarred with the same brush as I know that there are some terrific ones out there, who have all the necessary qualifications, plus the experience to help someone on their journey......but.....I feel that this industry needs to be properly regulated and that it should be mandatory to be associated with a professional body. Yes, this is a controversial topic Emma and it's good that you are talking about it! What I will say is that if you are looking to go down this route in needing some guidance, please do your due diligence and check out their reviews and don't be afraid to ask them what their qualifications and experience are.
I love this perspective, thank you for sharing. I think you're so right. There are a lot of people out there calling themselves coaches who are making it difficult for the ones who are the real deal to do the good work. Such a shame. And you're right, the due diligence is vital but I think a lot of coaches operate on the scarcity idea and put the pressure on to sign up by a certain date, which can steer you away from rational decision making. It's a minefield.
For chuggers I usually say I’m trying to catch a train! Part of me does feel guilty if I just ignore them or say no to a donation. Been there though that being nice and replying seems like a waste of their time too.
That's such a good plan!
The shock throughout my entire body when I saw that D.T. was way ahead during the elections made me feel physically sick. I knew straight away that he had already won and that there was no way that it could swing the other way; too late for that. I didn't want to get out of bed the next morning and I felt completely overwhelmed with gloom. Although I am in Australia, it affects each and every one of us...especially women. The next thing you know is that we (as women) will be campaigning again for The Right to Vote. How indeed could this happen? Democracy just died!
I'm grateful for the transparency. I'm also endlessly shocked by the degree to which people outside the US monitor and care about our politics. It only makes sense, of course, given the weight of this nation, but it's nevertheless refreshing and validating to have your personal horror reflected by others outside your country. It can be easy to get lost in the national conversation, not sure which way is up or down - but clear opinions from those outside the country often feel quite sobering. As ever, thank you
I can not believe it either
Listening to the various post mortems and it's becoming clear how, but still shocking.
Loved everything Emma; thank you! Totally get the 'daylight saving' blues (as we call it here in Australia). I loathe the darker nights creeping in during the winter; the best thing is though that here in Sydney in the middle of winter, it still gets light by 7am. We are in springtime now, so loving it!
That sounds gorgeous! Love a bright start to the day! Thanks so much for watching. Kind of bonkers realising someone so far away saw this but I'm delighted!
I watched your last video and of course this one. I really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability on this subject. I, too, have lived with a disordered eating pattern since my teenage years. These days, Thinking about food, calories, my body, etc., takes up a lot less time and space in my head than it used to. I stopped weighing myself a few years ago and it has been a very welcome release. I was obsessed by the numbers on the scale for so long. I now use other cues to help me feel comfortable and confident, and look for different types of confirmation. I support you in this new endeavor. I should also say that I am a perfectionist, a creative person, - a person who really loves having a project to work on at all times. And losing weight has been a very absorbing project. I have found it crucial to put my energy towards other projects that keep me away from the self-absorption of a food and body image centered life. I've been an artist for my entire life. And just recently started creating art quilts. There are days when I work for hours and don't even think about food until I realize that I'm hungry. It has been incredibly joyful.
Thank you so much for watching and thank you so much for taking the time to write this. You have no idea how much hope this gives me. I hadn't realised that I'd just switched from a negative obsession to a positive one and to realise I have to 'let go' is actually more daunting than the commitment to make the lifestyle changes that helped me lose and maintain weight loss in the first place. But, it's work worth doing and I'm excited - and a little nervous - about this next step. I suspect I'll keep coming back to this comment as I find my way on this journey so thank you again for taking the time to share it with me. Ems xx
The solo episodes are so good. This was absolutely full of insightful commentary. To your point on GLP-1's; we provide them in clinic and it's been absolutely wild to witness the transformations. Also very interesting to contemplate the access I could have, particularly given my personal history with food, weight and body shape. Very interested to see how these drugs impact the world. As ever, wishing you all the best 🖤
Thanks so much, Connor!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this Emma.....in my living room....on my comfy sofa....in Sydney Australia 🙂
I'm so pleased to read this! Thank you. So funny to think of me in my living room and you in yours - on the other side of the world! Glad you enjoyed. xx

Thanks!
Love that you are adding the podcasts to TH-cam! Thanks Emma
Thank you. I did a high production version last year that you can see on the channel but so far these more 'intimate' (i.e. filmed at home on the sofa versions) seem to be what people enjoy more. Thanks for watching!
You and your car stuff = me getting haircuts. I just get an ill-defined unpleasant feeling that leads me to avoid it for as long as possible, even though I always feel pretty good when it’s done! I just find the process so uncomfortable.
Yes, it's bonkers isn't it. And guess what? I haven't thought about my headlamp for one second since, other than to comment on how quickly and easily it was over.
I really appreciate that you put these on TH-cam because this is how I "watch" or listen to podcasts.
I'm so pleased! Just wanted to give people more options as I know the audio podcast space is so crowded and hard to navigate on most platforms. TH-cam is a cinch!
The same happened to me last week I put off smogging my car when it took 5 mins 🤦🏽♀️
Funny, isn't it? We put these things off and let them 'bother' us unnecessarily. Thanks for watching!
Love that you’re in TH-cam!! How did I not know this!!?? 😮😮😮😂😂❤
Only quite recent. Trying it out, hence the low-production value of it being filmed on my sofa. Thanks for watching!
Really interesting chat. I also hate the taste of water. I do, however, love tea. Did some research and it seems that as long as you are drinking water, in some format or other, it absolutely counts. Right, where's that 15th cuppa 😂 xxx
I have heard this too and it gives me some comfort. Coffee and tea count! Hurrah!
Interesting episode... However, I would be interested to learn how the boundaries between work and life blurring due to technology, the massive increase in rents with a decline in housing quality, cost of living, student loans becoming a graduate tax, lower incomes, the pandemic, increased job insecurity (especially in certain sectors, e.g., media), etc. are impacting the situation as environmental factors that reduce our ability to withstand normal human emotions as well as deteriorate our health in other ways. :)
Yes, all good points as it's obviously multi-factorial but the chasm between generations feels quite huge. Although I can understand that their reality is vastly different from mine, I struggle to comprehend the lack of urgency and, well, caring.
Did you get your therapist degree from a box of crackerjacks?
Can't believe more people haven't seen this
Aslan dodge a bullet
Love Estee! She's always stayed honest and open about herself and that's why she's so loved by her viewers over 10 years.
This is depression.
Guess new podcast coming really soon
lol...she should be the last person to talk about relationships..she is just obsessed with marriage
For real. This didn't age well. You can't force someone to marry you with an ultimatum.
Not me thinking the fact that he doesn’t have social media is a red flag 🚩💀 but maybe it’s because social media is my job 🤦🏽♀️
So why did you quit this kinda journalism? Doesn't pay the bills anymore?
I grew out of it. It was a fun ride but just felt right to tap out.
