Making a Mini Encaustic Painting
In this video I show you a quick look at the process of creating a tiny encaustic painting! First, I tape off the edges of my panel so wax doesn't drip on them, then I glue a photograph (inkjet printed) onto the panel surface. Next, I add a couple layers of clear encaustic medium and fuse it. Then I layer another image printed on translucent vellum by heating it with a heat gun until the wax melts through. Then I fuse it all and voila!

In this video I show you how to create a multi-colored linocut print using the Reduction Method. In this method, one block is used to print all the colors and each color is carved away after printing so as to "reduce" the area and layer the colors. It's an amazing and remarkable process and you should try it! #linocutprint #linocut #linocutprint #linocutprintmaking #linocuttutorial

Narrow Band Weaving Part 1: Getting Started
Thank you for taking the time to explain this. Very helpful.
Thank you so much for doing this! Finally, something suitable for beginners.
Hello from Nova Scotia Canada. I came across your channel and I love the way you explain how to make your own patterns. I just received an Inkle Loom for an early Christmas gift. I look forward to learning how to make bands from your videos.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy Weaving!
Where can I get a loom
I found mine on Etsy.com- search for narrow band loom
so relaxing to watch. wondering what propane torch you use - I am contemplating purchasing one and not sure where to start/what to get. I have heard bernzomatic, but not sure what is good for encaustic work
Thank you! I have a Bernzomatic and I love it! Get any one that stays on after you turn it on without you needing to hold a button. I have another one that is annoying because I can't release the flame button. Bernzomatic has a couple different tips too. A good investment!
@@danaharrisseeger thank you! I will have to visit their website and see what I can find
It looks fantastic with the light rope behind!!
Thank you for this clear demonstration !
Thank you, very informative! do you weave on a double slotted heddle? Do not remember how to thread these.
Yes, here is a video on how I "warp" the double slotted rigid heddle: th-cam.com/video/SoLU8Eg-Xoo/w-d-xo.html
Great class! I am weaving the same only without loom. Хорошее объяснение, спасибо. Я тку так же только привязываю к себе и не нужно станок.
How did you make your pattern? Thanks
Here's a video on how I created my pattern: th-cam.com/video/fCTPm0FoxxI/w-d-xo.html hope that helps!
Hola muy interesante su información Dónde puedo adquirir el libro de estos patrones de bandas
Very informative! Thanks!
Amazing art!
Thanks so much!
Hello, not sure i understood why there was a need to double the red?
Hi! I double the red so it is thicker and stands "up" against the background. It fills in the gaps with the weft and makes the pattern more apparent. You can also use a thicker yarn if you want instead
I'm late to discovering your videos. Happy to see you are making them, because Im an art teacher and they are a good reference for them. Since I require supplies in large quantities, do you mind leading me to a supplier who has large bulk dry powder pigments? I notices you had blue blue in bulk. Thank you Noel
Thank you for sharing your insights!
What kind of loom is that? I’m looking for a band loom that I can use my heddles on. Specifically the double slot. Thanks.
This is the one I used: www.etsy.com/listing/583276507/4-rigid-heddle-loom-cardweaving-loom?click_key=333de0412e28e82a4047104741242de1b541efa2%3A583276507&click_sum=1e40d911&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=narrow+band+loom&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&sts=1&ret=1&content_source=1ccec50b175818546f925c225fe1c377e8998f09%253A583276507 they also make a wider one that works with a wider rigid heddle
Thank you for your generous time and knowledge.
Thanks so much for watching!

I gave u a lot of chances. U hav become boring sorry 😢
Hi there since you don’t have the products that your dis why not try it before u knock something. U know I just commented on ur u tube . I may change my mind ur tude needs to be in an up vive ? Whatcha think?
I have always admired you
Thank you sharing with us.😊
Thanks
The music is so distracting I can’t finish.
I am so sorry! I wish I could change it. Maybe try muting and using closed caption subtitles? I will try posting a new version soon thanks!
How would you make a 3 or 4 inch wide belt
You would need a bigger loom. I made a 2" belt with a rigid heddle that has 37 holes- for that many warp threads. If you wanted to make a wider belt, you would need a heddle with twice that many warp threads.
thank you!
What type of loom is this? I haven’t seen something like this before. I like its simplicity but also seems excellent for maintaining tension. Thanks for your videos. 👍
@@clairegalbraith9028 thank you! I have been watching and re-watching your tutorials on Baltic weaving, parts 1-3 for the last few days. You are the only weaver online that I have found who has made Baltic weaving clear and understandable! I was beginning to think I would never get it... I have also watched your tutorial on charting your own patterns. Brilliant. I would love to see you do a tutorial on weaving a wide Baltic band with multiple colors. Thanks so much for all your help!
Thank you so much! I will add one of those as well. Cheers!
This is wonderful! Thank you so much for providing us with this valuable knowledge.
Its always been my understanding that acrylic and encaustic are incompatible. The result is a non-archival painting. Please explain how you know about acrylic with encaustic. Thx
Thanks for asking! I know from years of experience and working with multiple mediums that yes, you can paint encaustic over acrylic. The main thing is you want an absorbent surface for the encaustic to stick, and if you keep the encaustic thin or make sure that you mix in something absorbent such as marble dust (calcium carbonate) add collage with paper that has a tooth, etc. your encaustic won’t peel or fall off over time. Hope that helps!
thank you. It was nice video. very informative. do u have a video showing how to clean the lino sheet and the roller from the water based ink?
I don't have another video, but I usually use a couple baby wipes and then you can rinse with warm water and a scrubby sponge. If the linoleum is unmounted it can warp with the water, so dry it with paper towel or regular towel and then press under some books before using again.
I'm curious as to whether Prismacolour pencils might work as they're very waxy/oily... Loving your work, Dana - new sub here.
Thanks so much! I have not tried those but let me know if you try!!
Thank you! Is the weft has to be the same width as the pattern yarn?
You can make it a little thicker or thinner but not too much difference.
Hi! I got a heddle - the handheld one, looks kike yours, but without all the other parts, lol. Its an almost lost tradition in my culture. But I wonder - can i do geometric patterns, like yours, with it, too?
Lovely video and great explanation but the siren noises scared me lol I had to stop the video to see if it was you or me haha my heart skipped a beat
Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!
Helpful advice. Cheers
Very cool! What is the hot plate you were using to prewax collage items? Do you have sources for purchase of the plate and small craft iron?
Thank you! The craft iron came from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, and you can get the anodized aluminum hot plate from R&F encaustic supplies!
You could also use a pancake griddle...Target, Walmart have them..everybody sells them..LOL I found mine at thrift stores, all working 100%. As for the iron, I use a small travel iron, a regular iron and a Veneer edge banding sealing iron, which you can get at any home improvement store or Amazon. They run between $86-$93. With a regular iron, I was told to find one with a flat base..no holes. I have both and they work the same. The holes are for steam and wax + steam =😮 LOL If you're undecided, maybe you know another artist who uses them...and can let you try. Have fun!!!
Hi there, What acid-free quality provides to printmaking ???
Hi there, paper has a tendency to yellow over time when exposed to air and light, especially if it contains acid. You will notice old newspapers that are brittle and discolored. Acid free paper doesn’t do that so it is archival and preserves the integrity of the artwork as it was first made. Cheers
Great. An interesting machine. I'll make my wife one too. There is a large one with pegs for working with planks. But for small jobs, this one will be more convenient. The children will be happy at the art school. Thank you. It would be great if you showed exactly what the machine looks like and what size it is. - Maxim - Russia = Saint Petersburg

Hi Maxim, it is called a rigid heddle narrow band loom
@@danaharrisseeger Спасибо. Посмотрел. В нашем регионе таких нет. Проще сделать своими руками. Ничего сложного.
I'm just wondering if a loom like this could be used for tablet weaving, rather than using a rigid heddle. I think it looks like it could, but not entirely sure.
Yes it can!!! Absolutely- you just put the warp through the tablets instead of the heddle
@@danaharrisseeger Thank you :)
Your beating tool looks like it was once part of a toy sword or dagger. I love seeing broken things being re-purposed. BRAVO!
That’s exactly what it was😂 from a childhood Nutcracker
Thanks. This time it’s too late I used a water based glue Tombow. I haven’t looked yet, but I’m sure it’s cloudy. I did my best to try not to get it on that I’m afraid to look but I will a lot of artist use the 77 and I’m gonna get it. I think it’s better than pixie spray and all that.
Hi again I am watching your video and you talk about toner transfer number one I don’t have a photocopier that does it number two why would I have to go to like Staples because I know Kinko’s doesn’t do it because I checked it out and I know the library doesn’t do it with their copier I’m really had a loss because you must have one of those expensive machines that does that I know it’s really expensive and like I said I’m totally at a loss I would love to try a transfer. I just forgot or how to do it and I don’t watch it anymore because I can’t do it so I figure out other ways but if you could help me out or give me some guidance or information, just for curiosity sake, I would appreciate it. Thanks again.🌻🌻🌻🌻
Thanks for watching! I have a really old photocopy machine, but laser prints with toner work. Sometimes the older machines work better because the toner releases more easily. You can experiment with different solvents too- sometimes wintergreen oil works or “Citrasolv” a citrus cleanser. Acetate also works but use a ventilated area
That’s soo cool I use citrasolv for other mixed media. I am still clueless.. what do u do rub it on the picture it won’t just slide off. I use old National Geographic with citrus and it makes great work. I’d be happy to show you a piece if you’d like.
Hi there I think you’re really great and I think you’re very helpful. I need to know what kind of glue you can use before you put on the wax meaning I want to put down acetate on top of some thing I’ve already glued down. Can I use the same glue? I don’t want it to be cloudy when the glue dries, I hope that makes sense. I think you’re great thanks please answer me. I know this is an old video but a lot of people are still watching you, so thank you
Thanks for watching! Before you put on the wax you can use a variety of glue from Elmer’s white glue to spray glue. For Acetate I would use spray mount like Super 77 so the acetate doesn’t wrinkle.
There your information is really cool. I actually looked up diamond core and I don’t see that kit that you have. I think it’s very cool. Do you mind telling me where you got it? Much appreciate it. Thanks.

what do you use to get the screen filler out of screen when you're done printing? I had a horrible time trying to clear the screen. It would not come out. Any suggestions or tips to make it less painful to clean?
Yes! I know what you mean. Speedball sells a Screen Cleaner that is specifically for that stuff. I squirt it on, and let it sit for a minute to a minute and a half and then blast it off with a pressure hose. You can do that a couple times if it doesn't completely come off.
