Ragely MMMBop review
I took the Mmmbop over Walla Crag for the review of this budget hardtail from #Ragely. I got this bike from Chain Reaction Cycles for £900. I think it was an absolute bargain the RRP is £1600.

Taking my fairly new On-one Wippet with rigid carbon fork for a classic loop in the lake District, I talk about what I've changed on the bike and hopefully show what a capable bike this is. The route is the classic Iron Keld / Hodge Close loop from Ambleside.
Scafell Pike Mountain Bike (Englands Highest Mountain)

Mountain biking England's highest mountain Scafell Pike, the route was an up/down from Wasdale Head via Hollow Stones and Lingmell Col. There are no Bridalways in Central fells up any of the peaks, so be prepared to be challenged. As you will see in the vid a member of the NT path team pointed out it was a footpath and told me to watch out for walkers but didn't ask me not to ride. If you do th...

Mountain bike ride from Keswick out to Skiddaw House then down towards Mosedale, I went up Knott from Carrick Mine but you could do High Pike then onto Knott the decent via Great Sca Fell then back via Dash falls. A top day out on the MTB, its all bridalway other than the section from Lingy Hut to Knott for some reason they missed this bit out :-).
Glaramara MTB (footpath)

Thought I would give Glaramara a go, its got lots of tec sections a few of them above my paygrade. There is no Flow on it so unless you love janky rocky stuff probably not for you. It is a Footpath as there are no Bridalways up any of the hills in central fells.

XC ride over the Pennines, starting from Blencarn up the tarmac road to Great Dunn fell, we then dropped down the bridalway to Garrigill, then up the corpse road to Gregs hut on the edge of Cross fell , then dropped down over Skirwith fell and desended to kirkland/Blencarn. After a dry spell it would be better but the final decent was ok.

Great video thanks , I’m planning on going up Dunn fell road then onto cross fell summit and back same way , where is best to peel off is it at the golf ball or before that lower down ? Thanks
Mountain bike guide who sprays wd40 on his brakes 🤣
I’ve been up to high cut nick on my mtb bike, I was absolutely blown away with the beauty of it
It's a canny spot 😃
900 quid!?
£890 actually on CR not looked to see what they are now, I think I would probably of got the next model up if it was for me as they have the 12 speed drive train and better forks.
What size frame is this one?
It's a large, they only do S,M,L . I have all 3 there's a fair bit of cross over between the sizes.
@@mtbguides_Rich they look fantastic. I've just bought the same size L . Looks like it will fit the same as my current Whyte 905 in size Medium
@@michaelsangster4751 really happy with mine it's probably my most used bike these days its very capable. My only slight criticism would be the build from Chain Reaction the lack of grease when it was built, easily resolved.
Looks like a greta out-of -the-way route (just my cup of the) so thanks for sharing the idea
It's a great day out, the climb up Rosett Gill is tuff but can be avoid by missing the steak pass decent.
Thanks for the tip I'll amend the planned route@@mtbguides_Rich
@@mtbguides_Rich walked up Stake Pass today & glad I wasn’t on my bike, as you warned against. Mind you as a descent it looks great. Any recommendations how best to get to the col at the top to enjoy the ride back into Langdales?
@@neilbower123 probably easiest go up and back down from Langdale or a liner ride from Langstrath. If you really want to ride it then probably best stick with plan A and do the 3 tarns ride, just take the man up pill for Rosset gill climb 😃.
@@mtbguides_Rich might give it a go after the ice has gone. Cheers for the tip Rich
how experienced do you have to be to bike here?👍
This route or in the Lake District, this route is pretty full on unless your used to mountain riding it's probably not for you. Things like the Borrowdale Bash or Sticks pass on Helvellyn are great introductions to Lake District riding.
Thinking of riding Kendal to the Pub at the bottom and hiking it!@@mtbguides_Rich
Cool hartail! 🔥 Awesome content buddy! 🤘
Thanks appreciated 🤙
Nice trail but please no music 😂
The amazing free YT music is optional, just hit mute and you can watch in peace 😀
@@mtbguides_Richbut the sound of the wheels moving on the gravel and rocks is so much better. 🤪😀 you telling them to make sure they move the tents 🤘😂 I mean where do they think they are Kilimanjaro?
@@twowheels4689 impressed you managed to watch the full thing with out falling asleep.
@@mtbguides_Rich what’s not to like that’s some awesome Trail
Got to have a go im the same
It's pretty junky, I would reverse it as Scarth gap is a better decent IMHO. If you want a challenge go for it 🤙
What route down did you take?
Summit down to Lingmel col then Hollow stones , hung a left and down to Wasdale Head. It's the classic tourist route. It gets very busy so I recommend doing it at a quiet time if you want any fun.
Great clip Rich. Four years later it’s a very bobbly experience…nothing smooth anymore. Good fun though. they’ve extended the run to finish at the bottom of the Kandahar run which is a nice touch. 👍
Awesome video!
Thanks 👍
All bikes must give way to walkers. If they do this everyone gets on well
Couldn't agree more
Excellent review! #ragley great vfm. Always nice to have a good Hardtail, or 3...
Ah .. good old hardtails .. my c16rs with pace 36's still going strong :)
Bet it's getting plenty of use up there, have you got your Ebike yet?
I’m struggling to get this route is there a Komoot route or something please?
Its one of my routes , I also do over Great Dodd with this decent both form Keswick. If you're on your own, guiding is only £90 for the day.
Great video, bought one of those last year and also very impressed with it. Got it as a fast tourer for light off road and it’s brilliantly.
I've not used my road bike since I got one , its more comfortable, more capable, just more fun, But you know that 😀 👍
@@mtbguides_Rich yes, I bought a gravel bike a couple of years ago but use the Whippet much more. Did Bristol to London to Birmingham to Bristol on canal towpaths last year and going to do Newcastle to Bristol via Rievers route/great north trail/canals this summer on it. Very capable, fast and as you say, fun👍
@@RichardGoucherI have the great north trail on my list of things to do, if I'll ever get around to it is another matter 😀
Great news Rich, It's an absolute classic. topman
Thanks 👍
I'll never understand why this route is a bridleway. Such a shame as the sound of screeching bike brakes and the deep tyre ruts is really not appreciated on peaks by almost all walkers. That's what those looks mean when you pass them.
Tyre ruts ?, it's mostly pitched path and bedrock. Can't disagree with you on the brake noise it's pretty annoying and I'm making the noise 😃. The problem is really the ridiculous Bridleway thing the sooner cyclist have right to use all footpaths and open access land the less pressure on places like Helvellyn.
You make a great instructor ! Thanks for this - useful tips about momentum, keeping off the front brake, and choosing a good line. I must admit choosing the best line looked the most difficult without previous experience.
That section is all about line choice, it's quite intimidating in places. If folk stick to my back wheel and follow my line they can usually clean it. Some lines look easier but normally end with a harder feature. Thanks for watching Rich
That looked quite a push up Park Fell! Do you think it’d be any easier doing the whole route but heading south?
You could do but the decent down to Pooley Bridge is a lot of fun. It's a much easier day to go up from Hartsop but you don't do the full High Street, still a cracking ride, especially after a dry spell.
At 0:40 your brakes are quite loud and if you use subtitles is says “ music “
Lol, semi metallic pads in the wet, what can you do 😃
How do you find the rigid fork ? I have the same bike and ride in the Highlands of Scotland on a lot of rocky tracks like you were riding and find I have to keep the speed down alot on the descents to remain in control and not to beat my arms up, I am thinking of getting a suspension fork as like you I have another bike with suspension
I agree suspension=speed, but with good body position light hands I think you can Handel a lot of stuff on the rigid. If you invest in a decent xc light fork it probably just going to increase fun but it will probably cost the same as the bike 😃
Great vid. Having done this a few times from the Castle Rigg Camp site. I can't see any problems as a BW. As you know it's a well used route by MTB'S Only complaint I can see, is people not happy horse riders using 😉😂
🤞it should all be ok, thanks.
Congratulations on the bridleway rich. I have an objection, it looks bloody sketchy lol. BTW are you taking the on one to bike park Wales so you can show us some more of your skills lol.
Not likely 😃
Good effort! is it worth the effort with the bike for the descent? thought about taking the bike up there for a wile but never done it yet, only walked up once from Eskdale so have no idea what the path down to Wasdale is like, looks mostly rideable from your video! would you recommend? guess its a push/carry all the way up?
It's not bad a bit chunky on top then lots of path pitching, much more ridable than I thought. You just have to pick a quiet time.
Good video Rich and the bike seemed to handle it well, but I'm sticking to my electric armchair lol.
Well my armchair is in getting a new motor and battery, motor was not right so they put a claim in and few days later the battery failed , warranty runs out the 20th this month so I was very lucky.
The new bike looks great, fixed fork handled some rough tracks in the video. 👌
Pretty happy with it dose the job you just have to pick your lines. Took it down Walla crag yesterday it managed it ok but probably it's limit.
@@mtbguides_Rich Like you said, there's no perfect bike, only compromise... as long as its fun!!
What is this loop called looks ok for an xc bike
Not sure if it's got a name , but it's Iron Keld, Hodge close loop you could do lougrigg terrace at the end to extend it a bit. This my Strava link the first 5k is missing as I forgot to start it strava.app.link/ZCpJHIpRhwb
Is this descent the right or left side if standing at the top...thanks
From Halls fell top looking towards a66, it would be on your left. It's fairly obvious.
I'm polite as a trail runner even when I get verbal like this from hikers. Take care 👍🏼✌🏼
👍😃
Well done lads. We live at the end of the run. Now I realise the attraction. So different without snow.
Nice spot to live, you'll have to get a bike and have a go.
Fair play mate, I live, work, ride and hike in the lakes. It’s ever so easy to plot a route, unfortunately buttermere is savage. There is always swear words when the bike is out there
Thanks 👍
Just ask if they're the landowner. The rest is bluff and bluster. The footpath regulations are a mess, particularly for off-road paths. The rights of traditional usage render her complaints moot, particularly in the lakes. The sooner off-road footpaths are brough in line with Scotland the better. Ocassionally get the same in the west pennine moors. It's always the ones with damn ski sticks.
How steep is the way up is it all pushable or do you have to hikeabike?
It's all pedalable on an Ebike and at least 50% pedal and push on a proper bike 😃, no carrying needed, best way is up to Green side mine then Keppel Cove.
@@mtbguides_Rich great, will try it out, thank you
Mate sort them brakes out! 😂
They just need to warm up 😃,Was quite tempted with some nice hope Tec 4 , but the price !!!!
great friend,,, greetings from Indonesia, the gold seeker,,,METRO LOKAL GOLD,,,🙏👍✋🇮🇩
Ridden a lot in the lakes and always thought about doing Scafell Pike but people who walk it say it's not worth doing the descent would be more a push so put me off but that looks quite good IMO, I reckon this has inspired me to try it sometime 👍🏼
PS how much did you push down off the summit
I would say it's worth while but not something I would do again in a hurry, as it's a pain to drive round there and can be very busy. I did a lot more of the summit section than I thought, small section right at the top from the summit cairn, then the section below the slabs and lingmel col is probably the worst bit as it's steep with big chunky baby heads.
Coming off from knock fell down to the tees is one of those places where you can walk for hours and the horizon just doesnt change! Some interesting edits down there too. The innocuous spring source of the South Tyne is quite something randomly located at the side of the road!
Its an interesting area, have you got your Ebike yet.
@@mtbguides_Richone on order... one55 tm ... I've given up trying to chase Jayne down on her cube stero hybrid 140.... decided that's not good for me!
HI Richard, so from Grisedale Pike summit, did you go toward Sand Hill, around Hobcarton Crag, then left down Coledale Beck? Ta, Neil
Yes we went over Sand Hill and down Coldale Hause, you can take the short cut path and miss out Sand hill , but if I remember it was ok and worth the extra up hill
@@mtbguides_Rich cheers. Great vids BTW
Did this route today in very warm conditions. Thanks for the .gpx. Christ that first descent from the col was loose, lumpy & steep!!

@@andrewsimpson1051 It was fun legally on Snowdon till MTB's came into conflict with walkers. then they had to have a voluntary restricted ban. Facts are, walkers are the priority in all national parks, with all other users playing second fiddle.
No different to wild campers , paragliding , wild swimmers , photographers, picnics , rock climbers none of them have the legal right to enjoy there hobby's, I could go on. I don't actually believe that on open access land on a PRW owned by an organisation like the trust that promotes access for all, I would be committing civil trespass. Unless asked not to do so by an appropriate person, like most privately owned public places like parks or shops access is implied so until your asked to leave/stop you are not actually committing CT. Its really a disgrace that other users groups were not included in the CROW act hopefully things will change in the future, lets not forget that CROW only gave walkers rights to do what they were already doing.
@@protarget1 Snowdon has a volunorty agreement that is very well respected by the MTB community and pretty sensible giving how busy it gets. There was a problem it was sorted out with a sensible agreement not a Ban.
@@andrewsimpson1051 probably not appeal to many, but I enjoyed it.
Nice one Rich. Looks like a good xc route
It's a great route you would enjoy it 👍
Greta vid as usual Richard. Can I just ask how much full on hike-a-bike there was as I have a very heavy e MTB & can't really get it up & over onto my shoulders so usually end up pushing it up the tech steep stuff. Just not sure this would be possible on this route. What do you reckon? Cheers, Neil
Neil, I think you would really struggle even with walk assist. The route is proper hike a bike the only climb you will pedal is the Honister one. I would not take anyone on an E round it. There is a Vid on EMBN of Steve Jones and Adam Brayton doing on Es so its possible but not fun. I think there are ways of doing the main decents on an E with the exeption of Scarth Gap to Black Sail as separate rides.
@@mtbguides_Rich Thanks for the sound advice. I struggled getting over the pass from Howtown back to Hartsop (Top of Boredale Hause pass) & some the 4 passes looks as steep if not more so than that, so maybe one to get my old non eTMB out of the garage for, cheers
Did you have had fun getting up to Lingy Hut Rich ?
No the bridalway is pants, Ive not tried the grassy track that gose up direct to the hut I suspect it may be ok on the E. The track up High Pike from Calebeck seems the best option even if it makes the ride a bit longer.
@@mtbguides_Rich 😊 it's much better as a decent. 👍
Another scary ride Rich! You looked close to the edge in places.
It's a big ride and it's only a short section, the rest of the ride is great it would be a good one for your team to do.
Gordon Bennett! Think I would have tried via Scale Force , surely couldn't be as bad!
It was a log book ride for my L3 assesment so had to be on the bridalway, yes I think that would have been a better decent.
How much battery did you have left Rich?, and is it the 700 or 500 you've got in there? That's quite as distance covered on one battery's worth .. Malley
It's a 700 wh , I still had a bit left 15%, I've done the same ride but included High Pike twice 6% and 8% left, staying mainly in Eco.
If don't want to worry about battery, I think there's a great loop starting from Longlands or Calebeck and missing out the Glenda bit
When we move upth to glen moriston we're gonna treat ourselves to a couple of levos with the 700 .. so I was interested in its range and climb performance
@@paddymalley8077 my best effort is 75k and 1900m climbing mainly of road in the boaders, pretty happy with the levo the only weak point is the wheels my model has cheap Mt500 hubs the freewheel has failed twice in a year it's lost a few spokes on the back wheel. As far the motor and the handling is it's spot on I've demoed a number of ebikes and the levo was better or equal to all of them (yeti, trek, focus, cube and mondraker)
