The 2023 BUFFALO RIVER Gravel Gran Fondo

The 3rd annual Buffalo River Gravel Gran Fondo was a gran(d), gravelly, ol' time. This ride is not a full race, but has 3 timed segments to add a bit of optional competition. This time around, I brought my brother, Josh, who just bought his first gravel bike a few months prior, to give him a taste of the organized bike ride scene. I also brought along my old faithful Challenge Strada Bianca tir...

Such beautiful countryside and picturesque views! I have been looking for gravel trails 🚵♂like that. Wasn't sure if there was any in this area or not. Looking forward to going on segments of that ride. Thanks for taking the effort to film that incredible trip and share it out! And congrats 🥳on completing that day long trek! Amazing accomplishment! Great work all around!

DUDE... NICE! Did we ever snd you a patch!?!?!

@@AlanCross Awesome. 🙂
Hey, just want to know does the negative air piston that is made of metal goes all the way to the inside of the stanchion tube or does it gets stuck after slightly pushing it in? I want to know whether similar to the positive piston that is made of plastic that can move freely all the way in and out of the stanchion tube does the negative piston can move freely inside or it gets stuck after getting at a certain place?
I'd have to take mine apart to check, but as long as everything has proper grease/fluid, it should be able to move the same on both sides. When you put the fork back together add like 10 psi and push the fork down to make sure it can go through it's full length of travel
Aye I'm from RVA and I've been down Cornelius Creek! Little sad the first like 50% of it is doubletrack but it's still rad. Truth be told I went down the trail that runs perpendicular to it Apple Orchard Falls when it was still marked as a MTB trail on Trailforks. That's since been changed and I found out why halfway down it haha, it was marked wrong.
Nice video. One of my concerns is that Little Cove and Cornelius are not sanctioned mountain bike trails and don't want to draw attention to the fact that we sometimes ride them. And don't want to piss off the hiking community. I've talked to others that have tried to get permission to use those trails for bike races and have been denied. My friends and I do a lot to keep these trails open and would hate to lose access to these great trails.
Permits were already approved through the Forest Service so it's good to go.
Actually, Little Cove is multi-use, USFS acknowledges and supports that. The upper section leading to the A.T. is not recommended. Many trails that are deemed "no bikes" in National Forest can be verified through the Visitors App, this is the USFS registry for documented trails managed/observed by USFS. Also accessible via www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/
Pine is my favorite trail
It is a good one!
Let’s goooo!!!!
I liked the video a lot. I'm still not understanding why you packed it in at mile 125 though. Looked like you were absolutely rolling. Was it because you were behind schedule with your finishing time? Was it the rain? It just seems like you abruptly made the call after reaching the stop and were able to get some food in you. Either way, you're a badass for even going out there. Hopefully this year will be a different result. I'll be out there as well. 🤘
Looking back, I probably shouldn't have called it...but the list of excuses is: Walking in the mud for 2 hours so checkpoint 1 took 7 hours instead of 5. This means I'm behind on nutrition and fluids from the start. Flat tire that won't seal - losing more time and adding frustration. Temperatures get so high that I had to stop under a tree for a minute to cool down. Less than an hour later, rain moves in, temp drops so low that I'm shivering. So each of those on their own is not a huge deal, but a combo of them all while being 10 hours in and just slightly over halfway, all added up to a lot of frustration and at that point I was just not ready to deal with another 5+ hours of it.
Great vid & recap! You're a great rider! It was nice meeting you, and see you in October! Scott
Thanks, good meeting you too!
Great video and great route. We did the Rockstar Gravel back in July of 2023. Started in Bridgewater and made a few adjustments along the way to the Tavern. Wish I had taken video of the single track and double track on our second day... just south of route 250. It was brutal. Thanks for sharing your ride!
Thanks! Yeah that first bit after 250 is rough for sure. We were having to make bag adjustments pretty often as stuff kept rattling loose. I'd like to do the Trail version at some point.
I was going to do the exact same thing, and this video contained everything I needed. Thanks a lot! To avoid oil on your hands and tools when removing the lowers, just rotate them upwards, and when both sides are loose, rotate downward again and the oil will drain. Great vid!
Awesome video! Thank you for giving directions/route suggestions cause pisgah trail markers are awful so knowing where to turn/go is very helpful
Guess he didn't give that tree some space 😂
200 miles IS enough of a challenge..the extreme mud needs to be weeded out..some mud..yes..extreme not necessary. Do Better
How many Gopros did you carry during the race?
Just one. I had it mounted on my bars with a quick release that I could take on and off.
Alan: your awesome, the rain and sudden temperature drop did a lot in, hope to see you there in the future, we have unfinished business.
I'm planning to come back. I dont like to leave things with a DNF
@@AlanCross I hope to see you there, the 200 needs to be beat by me as well !
Love those trails!!!
Great job, and thank you for recording this while you were racing/riding! If you do not mind me asking, is a road or gravel bike better for this fondo? What size tires seem to work best? Also, what's better, slicks tires w/ treads? Thanks so much, Alan!
A gravel bike will definitely be the more comfortable option. The course is roughly 65% gravel. If you have a road bike that can take 32 or 35s, you can definitely get away with it. My opinion is a gravel bike with low profile 40s is probably the best option. Slicks would be fine or something like a Maxxis Receptor/Specialized Pathfinder with slick centers and some side knobs would be good also.
@@AlanCross Thanks so much, Alan!
How did your bike clearance/slick tires deal with the mud? id like your feedback, doesnt seem like you had to stop for mud clearing while walking your bike like other riders... slicks good? how much clearance did you have btwn tires and frame/fork?
The clearance was decent. The tires were 40c and the bike is designed for up to 45s. Honestly, the clearance doesn't help much with that mud, it just cakes up way too much. I was mostly walking in a packed down grass path and rolling my bike through tall grass to help brush off mud, and also not pick up any additional mud in the process. I would fully carry the bike anytime mud was the only way through
@@AlanCross uhhgh. Not fun, thanks for the inside info! those slick tires helped not hold the mud for sure. look at the folks around you, they were stopping to clear their knobbies just rolling their bikes in the grass like you (maybe they didnt lift)...
feel for ya, great effort, should have re routed for sure.
If you've got no problem jumping train tracks to get an advantage then you can deal with mud. Why not make up your own reroute.
Good plan. You should come join me. I promise I'll wait for you at the train tracks so you can show me the easy way through the mud!
They should have done a reroute. No one would complain that there wasn't enough equipment destroying mud! "That sucked! Why would they reroute? I love destroying my bike! I like getting to water stops where the water is all gone." No one would have said any of these things.
Come back and break 12 hours!
That's the plan! Hoping for better weather next year and planning for a better tire choice! 😁
Great effort considering the circumstances. Being from the region and having ridden this race before, I knew about the mud (and how bad the mud can be here) and carried my bike for most of the 3 miles. I only did the 100 miler, but the sacrifice for those 3 miles was worth it because my bike was in great condition afterwards. That being said, that 3 miles really taxed me and I was way behind schedule, and got low on water. When I got to the water stop there was barely any water left. The people directly behind me weren't able to get water so out of respect I only filled one bottle. Luckily there were other intermediate spots (thanks Garmin) before the first aid station that provided a little bit of water, but it was a little scary and I can only imagine arriving at the water "oasis" with no water in the heat of the day exhausted and having to think about trudging for another 20 miles. It's a tough race and you have to be prepared for the worst case scenario. I'll be back next year, but I think I'll just stick to 100 miles.
That's rough. Hopefully they account for bike washing if there is a section like that in future events!
I imagine after this year, there will be more riders carrying their bikes over the mud sections before sucking it up into the drivetrain and wheels. Good tactics Frank, like a CX racer. Way to persevere and finish!
Mud was ridiculous. Trashed my bike over the decision to make it tough. Worst day on a bike ive ever had. Will never come back.
Sorry to hear that...I'm hoping for a dryer year next year!
If the mud pit would have been at the last 11 miles, “sagging” 300 riders would have been a little easier and safer and some would have walked to the finish. As it was, too much lost for the investment. Just my $.02
Totally agree. Last year, the big mud section was between the checkpoints, like mile 130 or something. While it still sucked, it didnt throw off your entire race, just the last third of it 😅
First of all, thank you for driving so far to out to our little city in the middle of nowhere! I sincerely hope you come back next year. I know all those roads like the back of my hand. Despite having a 4x4 some i still avoid. Haha! You people are brave souls. We as a community are so happy to have you here and always welcome 😉🙂
Definitely planning to come back. The atmosphere of the event and the community support make it more than just a bike race, in my book. It's just fun to be there for the weekend and be involved with everything.
From KS. Did 100 Unbound this year. Did Finland Gravel 177km one week later. Had trouble in first section (not due to course probs) got diverted to “short-cut” at second support station. Finished >93 miles of the 110, but felt deflated crossing finish. I signed up, trained, traveled to do it all - would have if they would let me. Full Feels to everyone who couldn’t finish for any reason! Gravel On!
I get it. I’m an Unbound 100 finisher. Tried the 200 miler and had asthma attack at mile 131 and Fell off my bike into a ditch. Fortunately, my meds and help from a couple of bystanders helped stabilize me while the rescue crew came for me. I don’t like A DNF but I’ve come to realize that remoteness of support is too risky. I’ve done an Ironman, many marathons, and finished on a Race Across America team but all of these at least have good access to emergency responders. I wish you success on your next attempt.
If the route was like that 1-2 days earlier then deffo a re-route needed. Acts of God can’t be catered for on the day of course, but the chap above states people travel from all over the world to race, only to have race ended so early. And waste thousands of pounds travelling and using holidays from work up etc etc. Cheers all.
can't agree more specially for the mud section, this was ridiculous...I came from France for this event and during the mud section I was so stressed by the perspective that my race was already over after a few miles because my bike was "destroyed" by the mud. I was able to "repair" and made it to the finish line (3 hours at mile 21 !).
Glad to hear you finished!
Hanging out shivering with a bunch of dudes under a tent, eating a hot dog… 🤣
Agree they should have rerouted. The mud pit also caused a water shortage at the oasis for the 100, due to folks washing their bikes.
Ahh...I heard there was a shortage, but didn't realize that was the reason. That's crazy
That mud was a rough way to start the race! Maybe I’ll see you there in the future!
The elements are enough, you don’t have to blame the Hotdogs!
Hah! So true!
You had me rolling 😂 "Big Gnarly Rock"
chime back for 2023?
Yep, coming back for some suffering
Nice summary, and congrats on beating the sun! Are you riding again this year?
Yes, I'll be back this year trying to knock off a little time from last year!

What kind of syringe is needed for the fork?
I used an old one from a rockshox brake bleed kit, but pretty much anything will work. I think you can find generic ones on amazon
Nice video- loving the extra shots of town and rest stations etc. can you post your Strava link? I’m doing it this year
Thanks for watching! The strava link is in the video description.
Good job we raced it this weekend
Nice! I was there too, just didn't video this year. That wind was wild.
@@AlanCross yes it was!!
Great video.
Is this race usually all on the road or are there some gravel parts? I'm wanting to participate this year but wanted to know beforehand
Yeah it is all road. Also not really a race, just a gran fondo style, big ride. Great course and well supported, so it's a good day on a bike for sure.
I meet a cody howell guy who rides for specialized out of kingsport, tn. He participates in the downhill events up at snow shoe. I might buy his old bike for 2600.00.
Sounds like a pretty good deal, if it's still in decent shape.
Good morning Alan, thank you very much for sharing your videos. What device do you have on the handlebars and what kind of mount is it? Too bad your gopro ran out of battery and we couldn't see the rest of the ride that day, how strange that you don't have an extra battery?
What's even more strange, is that I own several extra batteries, but forgot to bring them... The device is my Garmin Fenix watchface which is what I'm using nowadays as my main bike computer. The straps snap off and then I mount it in a clip that allows it to interface with a normal Garmin quarter turn bike mount. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/717689
Too bad you forgot the batteries, thank you for the information about your device, I looked for the information in the link you gave me and unfortunately my Instinct 2 is not compatible with that bike mount
You can use this for your Instinct - www.garmin.com/en-US/p/11078
That's the one I use, thanks
Thanks for this! Looks like a great group of guys. What did y’all use for navigation?
Route was made on a combo of Strava and Gaia. I think we were all using an assortment of Garmin Edge devices, mine was an Edge 820.
Do you find you need a GOOD chamois/pad cream? Noxema? I have been fighting with ignoring jock itch for too long and fixing it.
Good chamois cream - I use Chamois Butt'r most of the time. I guess it helps. Probably better than nothing. Their new Ultra stuff is thicker and supposedly lasts longer. No experience with Noxema or jock itch stuff, but probably not something to ignore if it's causing you issues.
What bike? Your rider weight? Tires? Pressure? Rim internal width? Tire size? Lube? What would you do differently? What was a great decision? Thank you!
Let's see if I can cover all this: Bike - 2022 Trek Fuel EX Weight (at the time) - 185ish lbs Tires - Maxxis Forekaster 2.35 (front) 22psi / Maxxis Aspen 2.25 (rear) 25 psi Rim internal - 30mm Lube - Squirt Do things differently - bring footwarmers (Hot Toes type things) Great decisions - not stopping at the campfire because I probably would not have started going again!
Great Video!💪🏻💪🏻🇺🇸
Check back for the sequel in April!
