There is one thing I share with hummingbird lovers. Always think of how easy or near impossible to clean the nectar bottle. Always look for a wider hole that allows cleaning all surfaces inside the bottle. Mold and other issues result when feeders are not cleaned, which causes sick birds. Hope this helps.

You need to tell newbie bird feeders NOT to use gelatin-based seed shapes/suet in hot weather. A very melty mess.

The Bleeding Heart Cardinals and the little canaries were brought over to Hawaii by 19th century settlers who missed the birds of their homelands. The Kolea or Golden Plover is a native, but in summer it migrates toAlaska to mate & raise chicks. It returns in Fall to the same patch of ground every year. There is a group that watches for its return each year. My friend has had 3 that return yearly for a decade. They leave the nestlings after 1 month. The babies wait another month to mature and then they fly to Hawaii. These birds migrate singly and in one flight. The white tern or fairly tern is also a native. They lay their one egg on a bare branch. When hatched, the adults bring the tiny minnows that are at the ocean edge and the babies have to figure out how to get them turned the right way and down the hatch. We had a tern family for several years running in a tree down Prince Edward Street from our hotel and we enjoyed each year watching them. If you see a fledgeling on the ground, the parent is around keeping watch & bringing food. Don't think you have to rescue it. Kudos to your recommendation for the Barefoot Bar. We love it. The aquarium is right next door & the zoo is across the street. You can snorkel and it is pretty good. From Oakland CA

By porridge, do you mean oats? If not, what is porridge? I'm in a drought area of the US and desperate to get birds to come and drink water, and hoping to feed them. Most of the birds have gone, but there are a few left. Thanks.

I actually saw an Ivory Billed Woodpecker in Virginia. I was in an area where pileated woodpeckers were regularly coming. I'll never forget it. Day after day I used to watch those beautiful woodpeckers come to these certain trees in the area. Then, one day I saw an Ivory Billed woodpecker. I froze. I was so enthralled and I knew exactly what it was because I had been studying that woodpecker for years. I secretly hoped I would see one because I knew they couldn't be extinct just because scientists didn't have a recorded video of them. Well, the woodpecker landed on a tree and I got to see the striking pattern on its back. I moved to put my camera up to record it and it flew off and I was left with a grainy image of it as it was flying away. I was devastated and exhilarated. It is truly a beautiful bird. This happened in 2020.

When I was a kid, I'd go squirrel hunting with my dad in the deep swamp along bayou Queue de Tortue. I saw a bunch of large woodpeckers high up in some old half dead cypress trees. Some of them appeared to have black crests, and some had red crests, When they noticed me even from quite a distance, they all scooted behind the tree trunk, and would occasionally peek around the edge at me -- very shy birds -- and very noisy. I believed them to be Piliated, as I had read an article in Louisiana Conservationist about woodpeckers and knew that Ivory-bills were very rare.

They eat a lot. The ones visiting my backyard eat about 5 pounds of seeds a day.
