Welcome to GARDENING IN COLD SPRING HARBOR, a channel where I Lyuba Franco, a home gardener living in Long Island, NY( gardening zone 7a) tackle all of the struggles, teach you simple tricks/hacks as well as give you all the easy, helpful yet proven tips so you can have the home garden of your dreams!!! I am a stay at home mother to 5 beautiful children (whom you will see periodically in my gardening videos), a loving wife of over 13 years and also a passionate home gardener. It all started with my birth mother who worked at a field/plantation, followed by my grandmother who I was lucky to know until she passed away at 93 years old. As long as I can remember, she used to take me to my parents Summer house in Ukraine and taught me all the gardening techniques and tricks that I still use in my own home garden today.Thank you for visiting my channel and for watching my videos! This is valuable information.
I haven’t used worm castings in my garden but I do use them with most of my indoor plants. It works so much better on most plants. I use MSU fertilizer with my orchids but for all my plants that are in soil I mix worm castings in. The plants really thrive with worm castings. I am thinking of using them on my blackberry plants next year.

How do you tell which ones male and or female
@@kaylablinks hello and thank you for watching my video. Male flowers just have a flower bloom followed by a then stem below leading to the main stem but female flowers have a baby cucumber forming right below the flower bloom. Hope I was able to answer your question. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
my pumpkin plant has only male flowers blooming , tips....tyia
Hello and thank you for watching my video. There are a few factors that can lead to your pumpkin plant producing only male flowers. This is typically normal in a you get plant as male flowers typically appear and open up before female flowers, if the plant is already established yet there are still no female blooms, it can be high air temps, drought or lack of nutrients in soil (fertilization). Make sure that the fertilizer which you'll be using has higher potassium and phosphorus numbers. I would also work in some bone meal around the root ball. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

Thank you for such great tips! I really leveled up my deadheading game this season. What a huge difference it made on multiple varieties of roses. In particular, the dog roses went from single blooms to huge clusters and even the colors deepened. Japanese beetles were , as usual, terrible, but I consistently deadheaded damaged blooms every day as well as removed/destroyed any beetles. I'm spraying 2x week with a tea tree mix while my neighbor uses neem. We're both seeing an equal rate of infestation. We'll try spraying more frequently ❤
Valuable info. Thanks

Thank you , very informative. I have 25 hybrid tea roses and climbers . So far we been having a very rainy summer and black spots got them . I do underground watering.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. You're positive feedback is truly appreciated. Im sorry to hear that you're roses are impacted by black spot disease this summer. Have you tried removing impacted foliage and spraying the plants down? As rain will temper off and the temps will start to cool down you're roses should bounce back. Please keep me updated. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@@lyubafranco yes. I spray them weekly now, with neem oil and winning half the battle.
All I have been doing for years was to spread at the base and around my roses about three inches layer thick of rabbit manure in late Fall and then cover it with a thick layer of shredded leaves, and they have always been blooming like crazy. I don't do anything else, except occasional spraying from bugs. I realize that rabbit manure may be hard to find. I made friends with farmers at a local farmer's market, and there is always a guy, who knows a guy , who knows a guy... who has tons of some kind of manure for almost free.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Sounds like you have uncovered a miracle fertilizer. Im not sure If I can find any rabbit manure here but I do have horse stables nearby and I know that my neighbor always goes there with a bucket and a shovel, then uses horse manure to fertilize all the crops in his home garden. Also told me that horse manure works wonders. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

Nice! Can I see your Crape Myrtle plant next video?
Any plants on clearance here in my area are all completely dead. They always are every year!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im sorry to hear that your local Lowes Garden Center doesn't have a good clearance section. Hopefully they'll start adding better looking plants vs all dead ones. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
I have 4 Roses they haven't bloomed this year. Is there a way to bring that back. Or I will have to just dig him out . Please help if you can. And not sure, if This is gonna be helpful for you . But I live in Colorado Thanks In advance .
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Most of the time a rose shrub doesn't bloom because of stress. How does the foliage look on those roses? It is dark green and glossy or are you seeing discoloration, fungal disease (black spot), insect bite marks? Are these roses planted in a full sun location? When is the last time you fertilized them? Typically roses put on their first set of flower buds in mid Spring. Have you're roses put on any flower buds at all? Another question I have to ask is what has the weather been like in Colorado? Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

Beautiful crape Myrtle’s!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im pleased to hear that you have enjoyed the content. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Great suggestions, thank you! I've heard about removing early flowers on tomato plants, but never had the heart to do it. Next Summer I will do an experiment with a couple of my pepper plants and see if they do better than the plants of the same variety planted side by side without any early flower removal. I am in upstate, NY, Albany area, so your videos are even more relevant, as we have somewhat similar climate, us being in Zone 6b (used to be 5a a few years ago). I recently discovered Datil peppers, which are unique to St. Augustine FL, and till recently the seeds were closely guarded by the local community (they sell all kind of Datil-based products, and even have an annual Datil Pepper festival). Same heat level as habanero, but much fruitier stronger flavor, and sweet, not bitter. Nowadays one can buy the seeds online, I bought mine from Raymond Powers, who has a short video about Datil peppers on youtube. Thanks again for the great videos! Subscribed.
Hi i just bought a bag from low’s and i know i cant plant them outside because its august but can you please let me know how i can preserve them for next year since they are still in the bag i dont wana lose them 😢thank you
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I actually have a few bags of gladiolus bulbs in my shed that I didn't get to plant earlier in the season. Typically gladiolus is planted from the day of last anticipated frost through July for continuous blooms. To store gladiolus bulbs you'll need to make sure that you keep then in a dry, dark, cool ( not below 40 F), ventilated location. I like to keep an eye on my bulbs throughout the storage period. I always touch/smell the bulbs to make sure that they remain firm to the touch and I don't see nor smell mold/rot. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

How frequently should I reapply neem oil after the first application? I can’t keep my plant isolated for more than 3 weeks, so I have to get it completely right the first time. I have armored scales for context

My cucumbers have a lot more space in the pot, could I just put more dirt to make more roots like tomatoes?

Can you still eat the peppers from a plant with bacterial wilt?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. You're asking a very good question. Yes, you can still eat the harvested peppers. The plant itself is considered severed/dead but the fruits are fine to consume. After you'll get rid of the impacted plant I would not plant another crop in that same location until you'll replace the soil. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
