Amberlea Model Railway
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 พ.ย. 2013
Taking you on my N Gauge model railway adventure from the start of the build in my loft to the present day. I started building the layout in June 2023 and began my You Tube journey at the same time
I had no previous knowledge of creating a model railway other than a general interest in trains, something that's been with me since I was a boy. Similarly, I had never made a video either and so began the steep learning curve.
So far it's been frustrating, irritating, annoying and lots of fun! Please join me and watch the model railway come to life with content exploring what I've been up to, mistakes and all. I aim to produce a 15 to 20 minute video every two weeks with the release being on a Sunday morning. Quite often I'll put out a Short or a shorter-length video on the in between weeks if I've got a project that's especially interesting.

Like the over bridge Chris !
Hi Chris - great progress on the extension. I like the scratch built twin arched viaduct - looks the part. Cheers Euan
Hi Euan, thanks pal. Just been away in that there big London for a few days and looking forward to getting back to the layout now😁
Gradually making my way through your videos. 👍
LOL you got a think for the green BP tankers too. They are a beauty no matter scale version they are all winners. BAH! Who am I kidding I just love green be sure to check out my carpet as seen in the very first of my videos. lol great stuff keep it up. Thanks for subscribing.
Hi Chris! That's some excellent progress you've made with the extension! Love the double bridge idea, and the canal scene below is going to look great! Great news about the Buggleskelly wagon too, as I see Tom has commented that they'll be doing the Dad's Army wagons in N! All the best, Ian.
Hi Ian, yes, I'm pleased with things so far, I was thinking at one stage that I hadn't been ambitious enough but as I tackle more sceneryI become more content with what I've done..... Great news indeed about the wagons, I think the Train Account is going to need a serious injection of funds......
Hi Chris, well, your extension is coming along nicely. Those bridges are looking great, and it's nice to see a loco running on the new section. We're looking forward to your next update. There's some signage on our community page about three posts ago, that you might be able to do something with. ..cheers James 🙂👍
Hi James, glad you like what I've done so far - plenty more to come! I'll check out the signage.......
@@Amberlea-Model-Railway maybe you could screenshot it 🙂👍
I can also confirm we're doing the Dad's Army wagons in N. They'll be out later in the year :)
That's great news, there's plenty of us who'll promote (and buy) the wagons. Happy to do so on my FB, Instagram and YT feeds. Chris
Llooks great Chris and thanks for your purchase of the wagon :)
No worries.
Good to see the extension taking shape Chris. The section where the branch crosses the railway and canal is going to look great. I could already see it taking form just with the basic structure going in place. Well done on promoting the Buggleskelly wagon. Tom has been in touch to say that he is thinking of doing another wagon but he wouldn't let on which that may be. I dropped some not so subtle hints to him which he might want to do. Look forward to seeing progress in the next video. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, I've really enjoyed doing the extension, back to basics in a lot of ways :) I'm really pleased with how the scenic work is taking shape, you'll have to wait for the next couple of videos for the reveal:) My pleasure promoting the Buggleskelly wagon, see above for the latest news from Tom. Chris
looking great. ++ is there any chance you could do a video on the Cricut and software you are using, take us through the design and then printing
Hi there, I can certainly give it a try - my video making skills are not brilliant so you'll have to bear with me.....
Greetings Chris 👋 You are making great progress on the extension 😇 I love the canal and railway scene under the bridges 😍 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Cheers Paul
That’s a N-ockout ! I need a happy video after my last one went live. Model railway it’s not always sunshine and rainbows keep up the great content.
Coming along nicely Chris - definitely a good move on the curve return. Looking forward to seeing the track laid. Regards Steve
Cheers Steve, actually laying the track as we speak but won't be out on video for a few weeks...
Hi Chris - always exciting when a layout gets extended. Lots of extra room for even longer trains. Looking forward to seeing this new bit of the layout develop over the coming weeks and months 😊 cheers Euan
Hi Euan, thanks mate - I'm really enjoying the build. I have to keep reminding myself to film what I'm doing!🤣
Hi Chris! Great to see the progress you're making! Getting rid of the 1st radius curves is definitely an excellent idea! You've created a nice long run now for scenery! Can't wait to see what you do with it! Cheers, Ian.
Hi Ian, seem to have got my mo-jo back a bit recently so I'm making the most of it!
Hi Chris I've just subscribed, the extension is looking great, looking forward to looking at the rest of the layout in your past videos. Colin
Hi Colin and welcome. Thanks for your kind words. I started modelling and YouTubing at the same time about a year ago and a complete novice in both as you will see from the early videos. Hopefully I'm getting a bit better at both😀. Enjoy
Hi Chris, nice to see the progress you've made with the new extension. We're looking forward to following your progress ...cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James, I've got a place in mind for a Dylington Custard poster, that's if you both will allow me of course............😁🤪
@Amberlea-N-gauge-Railway I'm sure my grandson would be delighted to see one appear on your layout, Chris ...cheers James 😁👍
Hi James, will you send me a poster please?
@Amberlea-N-gauge-Railway Hi Chris, I'm scratching my head on this one. We got ours from Scale Model Scenery as they do them based on our layout. But they are 00 anyway, and how do we get it to you 🤔
@@DYLINGTONMODELRAILWAY Good question James, I note that Paul at Wickford has one on his station and presumed that you had sent it to him somehow either electronically or otherwise.
Good to see the exertions boards in place. That is going to add quite a bit to the layout and rid you the dreaded first radius curves. Look forward to seeing trains run around here indue course. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, I'm hoping the scenic opportunities give me some decent alternative angles for photos and running shots. Chris
Hi Chris! Great job with the industrial unit! I can't wait to start scratch building stuff using my Cricut machine! I can't stand Design Space though, and use Inkscape instead, which is a lot more powerful! Cheers, Ian.
Cheers Ian, there are some issues with the CRICUT in N gauge as you can imagine and occasionally it doesn't cut right through poster board (despite the correct settings!). I'm just starting to dabble in Inkscape after watching the superb work of Michael at Chandwell, it seems a good alternative to Design Space especially with the more complex builds.
I use 2mm greyboard for my servo enclosure boxes and only have the occasional glitch! Yes, Michael does some really inspirational stuff and I can't believe he makes all of his cuts by hand! Ian
Hi Chris, you've done a great job of that build. It's a good job you've put a sign on it before y grandson spotted it and asked if it was a Dylington Custard distribution centre 😁 we're looking forward to seeing it settled in to your layout...cheers James 🙂👍
Hi James, thanks for your kind comment - I'm sure that a DCDC will appear on my layout sooner or later......🤣
@@Amberlea-Model-Railway Hi Chris, I'm sure my grandson will be watching 😁👍
That was a good outcome Chris. I found the Metcalf buildings were very useful in teaching me the basic of card building design and how to make things structurally sound. The end result looked good on the layout. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, Metcalfe kits certainly give you a good grounding in design and the confidence to give scratch-building a go🙂
Nice job !
Thank you and welcome to Amberlea - many thanks for subscribing😁
Well done Chris, looks good. Scratch building is very rewarding I think.
Cheers Ben, people like you provide the inspiration...👍
That was a brilliant bit of scratch building Chris - looks very very good. You must be very proud of that achievement. What was the materials used for the fencing? Regards Steve
Hi Steve, thanks mate, after quite a few Metcalfe kits I thought I'd try a bit of DIY - more to it than I expected - took some inspiration from Chandwell (his modelling is absolutely brilliant!) to get it done, we live and learn😁
The fencing was a Scalemodelscenery kit "Chain Link Security Fencing" which came in a job lot off Ebay. It was incomplete so I just used what was left and fortunately it was enough.
Hi Chris! I very much enjoyed the tour of the layout and hearing your plans for it! It'll be interesting to see how the plans progress, and whether or not you change them as you go! I'd try and keep the trains on view as much as possible - they cost to much to hide them behind the scenes for too long! Lol! I originally had a sweeping S bend in my layout plan for Shelfington, but found that not all of my rolling stock liked traversing S bends, especially if they were too tight, so definitely have a test if you're going to go down that route! Looking forward to your next update! All the best, Ian.
Hi Chris - definitely try and keep the back two lines visible - on my first attempt I had a tunnel most of the way which covered the lines and I missed the opportunity to have a straight run. The extension down the other side will open up a lot of opportunity to create stations, fiddle yards etc and give you more running options. Great to see the whole layout and th eway you broke it down into sections. Lots of exciting work ahead! Regards Steve
Thanks Steve, I think it's pretty much decision made with making the rear two lines visible, 3+ metres of double track hidden - what was I thinking?🤨
Hi Chris, That was an enjoyable and informative tour of your layout. It sounds like you've got plenty of ideas to develop it further. When we were building Dylington, we decided to cover the track at one end, as my grandson wanted a tunnel. We were going to pull a camp site on top around the edge of a reservoir, including part of a dam. But my grandson decided he wanted a farm, so it ended up there instead of the campsite. Swoping the tracks at the back around sounds good, however, you decide to do it. As for the possible industrial area on the extension, my grandson says you need a Dylington Custard distribution area 🙄, he says those yellow wagons are carrying Dylington Custard 😂. We're looking forward to following your progress...cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James, I've cracked straight on with the boards for the extension, no time like the present.....
@@Amberlea-Model-Railway that's right strike while the iron is hot 😁👍
Hi Chris. I enjoyed the layout tour and the discussion of your plans. I think people do enjoy hearing what you have planned and then seeing it happen. I think you are right to try to find a way to incorporate the far two lines at the back into the visible part of the layout. I'll be interested to see how you adjust the revised line to achieve that, but it could make for a scenically interesting section as the lines intertwine to eventually get to their respective tunnel portals. Stephen
Thanks again for your support Stephen, I'm pretty much decided on moving the rear lines now.......
Hello Chris 👋 Really enjoyed the layout tour, and the thought process involved 🤩 definitely two thumbs 👍 👍 up for the talking format 🌞 Very best wishes for the railway and the channel from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Thanks for your comment and feedback Paul, I just seem to be wading through treacle at the moment adding the odd subscriber here and there whilst new channels seem to get 200+ subs after only their first video. Had to try something a bit different.😃
Hi Chris! I like Oxford Diecast models, and I have more than a few myself, but even though this is a mystery box, that's one heck of a lot of busses! Hopefully you'll find a use for them, or will be able to sell them on! Cheers for giving us a look inside the box! Ian
Looks like a nice selection there Chris, even if they aren't all suitable for your layout...cheers James 🙂👍
Hi Chris! It's always nice to see how the scenic areas of a layout will develop! Keep up the good work! All the best, Ian.
Thanks Ian😁
Looking good, Chris, the scenic area is coming along nicely... Cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James, seemed like I had been working on it for ages but only covered a small area.......
@Amberlea-N-gauge-Railway Have you seen our latest bit of nonsense? It kept my grandson busy for ages, creating it 😁👍
Excellent bit of work Chris. 😊
Thanks Euan, really enjoying it at the moment
Hi Chris. Good to see more of the scenery going on. As I am currently watching the third coat of PVA dry on my canal basin I know how it feels wondering if it is going to dry clear. The weathering and detailing of the yard is all adding the realism of that part of the layout. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, the PVA was Elvenhome inspired, nowhere near the amount you have used though...
Lots of good progress on the layout - well done and keep up the good work. Regards Steve
Cheers Steve, got my modelling Mo-Jo back a bit now, so there should be lots of activity over the next few weeks...
Great video. I do like N gauge, but with my eye sight i will stay with OO.
The two new locos looked very much at home Chris. The wire fence came out very well. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, it's always a relief when buying from Ebay that the things actually work.....
Some clever moves with the fence posts - I tried similar with thin gauge wire but they never looked right - must invest in some silver cotton! Great running session as well! Regards Steve
Cheers Steve, was really fiddly and I'm not sure was worth it in the end but you gotta give it a try,,,
Ooh! A nice couple of 47's! Been looking for a one in BR blue for a while now, but they're like hen's teeth to get hold of! Enjoyed the running session! All the best, Ian.
Thanks Ian, I must admit I haven't seen one in "normal" livery for quite a while now - when one finally appears race you for it?🤣
Nice running session, and new arrivals to Amberlea, the built up kit looks great as well, nice video... Cheers James 🙂👍
Cheers James
Fetish 🤭 you can't have too many Class 47's 😍 Great running session and tunes 🎵🎵 very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Cheers Paul, it looks to me like the 47 appears in many different liveries in N Gauge - one could even say possibly the most different .......... maybe I should start collecting...........🤔
Well Done on 100 Subscribers Mate! I love how the match sticks in N Gauge look huge compared to the matchsticks on my layout that I used to make a fence! Cheers, Andy
Many thanks Andy
Well done on the ton and I am sure you will get many many more. The timber yard looks great - modelling matchsticks are so very good for the odd bits here and there - I used some for the signs on the station and for a coal staithe. I also look for scrap balsa wood or corrugated card as additional materials and lollipop sticks make excellent stirrers! Regards Steve
Cheers Steve
Many congratulations on reaching your first 100 subscribers!
Thanks Ian
Congratulations on hitting your first milestone. Great to put a face to the name as well😊. Cheers Euan
Many thanks Euan
Well done Chris 100 subscribers, we like the addition of the timber yard a great little scene...cheers James 🙂👍
Thanks James
Well done on 100 subscribers Chris and good to see you on screen. I'm so pleased that you've picked up subscribers. I like the timber yard. I thought the timber storage canopy looked very good and the scene does go well in that section. Stephen
Thanks Stephen
Hi just watched you video after seeing your channel on Elvenhome, you have great N gauge layout in the making! Always good to see another N gauge channel starting up! Cheers Gary
Interesting video of your layout etc, I would suggest that you use a landscape mode and watch for shots that are out of focus. The audio was good and clear.
Thanks for the tips, I'm learning that the creating- video journey is frequently more demanding than the modelling one! Next on the shopping list is a decent video camera which will hopefully help😁
@@Amberlea-Model-Railway most modern phones can produce very reasonable shots but will require a tripod to remove camera shake and there are tricks to setting a focus as well. You could look on TH-cam for some ideas and use the gear you have for the time being without spending a lot of money.
