    I have one in Redondo beach Ca. The fruit seemed rather lackluster and it grew like a bean stalk ! I cut it down and it grew back from the stump ! Now it’s huge again and full of fruit fruit is still ee~ so so I’ll try to get some dark purple before hack it down again and look for the lemon guava !

    Those roots are just going to grow right back. They will laugh at the plastic barrier (which will also break down releasing micro-plastics into your soil).

    • @MelbourneFoodforest
      @MelbourneFoodforest 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi very happy to hear your ideas on a better approach to roots - we've yet to find one. Having said that you'll be surprised how effective this actually is - roots do not penetrate it as it's an impermeable plastic barrier, and plastic buried in the soil does not break down quickly at all (the research suggests 1000 years...). We have some that has been in the ground for 10 years and there's not even been degradation of the plastic on the surface exposed to the elements - others have used this successfully for much much longer. While I'm wildly opposed to single-use plastics and hidden micro-plastics in products, there are some appropriate uses of plastic of which I consider this is an instance.

    Tree roots spread twice the width of the height of the trees. As long as you plant shallow rooted crops, it will work 😊

    • @MelbourneFoodforest
      @MelbourneFoodforest 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      True, although the most vigorous feeder roots of trees that compete with our annuals tend to be at the surface. And I figure, our fruit trees with deeper roots will just need to partially fend for themselves, survival of the fittest under the soil 😊

  • @kveale17
    @kveale17 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Do fruit trees stand a better chance against neighbouring tree roots?

    • @MelbourneFoodforest
      @MelbourneFoodforest 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Being perennials, fruit trees absolutely do fare much better than your annual veggie crops at competing with trees. Their roots will also travel far and wide in search of food and water. However, if you're dealing with a very big eucalyptus tree or a native like we're combatting, it can still significantly rob your fruit trees of nutrients and you might really be fertilising and watering your neighbours tree!

    Had a neighbor's Camphor laurel roots go under the fence, go 2 meters in to my side, and then all the way up the compost bin 😥no compost left, just a big ball of roots 😡

    • @MelbourneFoodforest
      @MelbourneFoodforest 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      😥 We've experienced that too, so disappointing when you've been waiting oh-so-patiently for your compost to ripen, only to find it completely filled with roots. Might be worth putting a plastic barrier directly under your compost bin.

    Looks like they had spider mite infestation which is why they are yellow. You can see the tiny spider mite web on the leaves when you filmed on top of the tank and the sun was reflecting off them. Looked like classic spider mite webbing covering the leaves and that would explain the yellowing.
