Sharing my garden and everything I've learned from it with the hope that it will inspire you to get your hands dirty. Here you'll find the ups and downs of gardening in a zone 5b, Chicago-area climate. From a different zone? No worries. The ideas and practices are pretty universal. While no longer active, I rely on my master gardener training to create and maintain a healthy garden. Let's grow together!
How to Ensure Your Mangave Lives on After Flowering
Mangave flowers seem to appear overnight. Their stalks grow incredibly fast and the flower they produce is equally as interesting (and pollinator friendly). I reached out to Hans Hansen, the head of the hybridizing team at @WaltersGardens, to confirm what a mangave flower means for the future of the plant. There's lots of conflicting information about it so I took it straight from the man behind the mangave. According to Hans, a mangave flower means the end is near for the plant.
Fortunately, mangave produce plenty of pups that can be propagated. While the mother plant will die, her pups will live on.

Plant this North American Native Shrub for Birds and Pollinators
มุมมอง 2.3Kวันที่ผ่านมา
My love for birds in the garden is what inspired me to plant Viburnum trilobum 'Redwing,' a North American native shrub whose gorgeous red berries are a delectable treat. Also known as American cranberry bush, it's a larval host plant for Spring Azure butterflies too! Redwing is a true trilobum, not a hybrid, and is part of the Chicagoland Grows plant introduction program which develops plants,...
When to Harvest Winter Squash, Dig & Drop Composting

Harvesting and curing winter squash is just one of the things I do in the veg garden in October. Timing is everything. I'm also focusing on replenishing the soil with this very budget friendly technique. I've done it since I started gardening over 25 years ago and still do it. You don't need a compost pile or bin. Just a shovel and your kitchen scraps! Timestamps 0:00 Intro 2:04 Harvesting Topp...

Topping Tomatoes for a Final Harvest | Here She Grows

Summer has come and gone which means it's time to start topping tomatoes. Our first frost is just a few weeks away and there are loads of green tomatoes I don't want to waste. The idea of a jewel box garden has been in the back of my mind for years. Now that this corner of my backyard garden is in need of a sun to shade transition, it's the perfect time to open my own little jewel box with perennials that are light on flowers and heavy on foliage color and texture. It doesn't look like much but then what garden does when it's newly planted. And as mentioned in the vi...

Tour My Sunny Patio Garden and Containers | Here She Grows
มุมมอง 24K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
My patio garden is the hottest spot in my landscape so the plants that live here have to be able to take the heat. They also need to be able to fend for themselves after the initial rooting in period. I don't have drip irrigation and you might be surprised to see a few plants with rather thirsty reputations. They would probably perform even better if I watered frequently but I'm pleased with th...

Love your garden! It gives me inspiration!
Hi there. Great video. The Silver Fox is Beautiful. I can't find any available. Maybe I'll have better luck in the summer. Thank you!
Absolutely loved this video! I'm looking to start a Mangave Collection now!😂 Thank you!
Poor guy. Lol
🤣🤣🤣
What else grow in your dry shade, please?
Hellebore, hosta, sweet woodruff, variegated Solomon seal, Aruncus
Curious, 2 yrs later - have you changed anything in your process to bring them inside?? Thank you in advance!! 😊
😍 Wonderful Mangaves, Heather! Nice instructions, thanks. I meant to mention in your last video, your curls are beautiful, girl! 🥰
What do you do about squirrels?
@@JoseMartinez-df2db I’m don’t have squirrel problems, but if that’s an issue for you, try a repellant that won’t harm them but will deter them from what you want to protect. Plantskydd and Bonide’s Repels All are good products.
Thanks for the info. I have 1 fig trees that I need to overwinter in the garage. But they need repotting, so should I do that before winter or wait until spring?
Hi there! I’d wait until spring to repot.
@@heatherhereshegrows Thank You! I will.
OK I am SO glad that I'm not the only one that does this.... I literally have spent the last 10 years staring. Staring in my Pj's, staring with a cup of tea, staring w/ a glass of wine. Just looking & observing. It's so important I think to just spend the time seeing where your "weak" spots are and I also would place a stake and look at it from all angles. My neighbor probably think I'm a little off 🤣
It’s the best way to get to know your space and visualize the possibilities.
Hi Heather! Perfect choice on Redwing Viburnum! Very nice ❤. I want to plant one now. Thanks for the info and inspiration! 🙌 I thought your husband was going to pass out 😂
At one point he asked “What are you doing to me?!” That root ball was over 200 pounds!
@@heatherhereshegrowsWhoa! 👀💪💪
I removed my Autumn Brilliance serviceberry earlier this fall and replaced it with a Dogwood Scarlet Fire. I’d heard you talking about possibly evicting yours and it helped me realize I had waited too long too. I love that viburnum!
Editing, for me, is the most difficult part of gardening I think because I spend a lot of time considering plants and I always want to give them one last chance.
TY for this video! My goodness, I can relate! Also, HARDY banana tree? Where can I find one, please!
Thanks for watching! I’ve been finding the hardy bananas more frequently these days at big box stores and local nurseries. They seem to show up in early June.
Hi there, love the cranberry viburnum you chose - its going to be beautiful I'm sure! I just planted two myself, I thought I would mention that I'm pretty sure yours will need another one close by in order to get berries again next year. Maybe the neighbors have one?
Yes! Later in the video I put a note on the screen that for best fruit set, a second one is needed.
Thank you from the 🇬🇧 UK
Thanks for watching!
Love the video. Your husband is adorable & it’s nice that he helps out! Love the Fall color on that bush.
Thank you! He’s my muscle in the garden and has always been so willing to help.
I got seeds of this viburnum to plant this year in winter sowing 😊
I had no idea seeds were available!
@@heatherhereshegrows yes praire moon nursery is where I got them from you have to store them in the fridge until ready to sow
Excellent video! Love the new shrub.
Thank you! I can’t wait to watch it grow!
This shrub checks all of my boxes to replace a struggling serviceberry. Now, I just have to find one at my local nursery.
That’s the way I saw it too. Flowers, berries, fall color, native. What’s not to love?!
can you fix the volume and re- load this somehow ?? we can barely hear you!! i have it on 100!
I’m so sorry about the sound. I was having mic issues. Thanks for trying to listen though.
Excellent choice. Great planting details. How close does the other viburnum need to be to get fruit?
Hi there! The closer they are to each other the better the chance of good pollination. The bees will be able to find them if both are located somewhere on the property and not necessarily right next to each other
Love this viburnum choice!
Thanks Brad!
Thanks for showing that’s it’s ok to remove plants that aren’t pulling their weight. Now I want one of these viburnum!
It’s something I’ve had difficulty doing as I keep hoping that next season will be “the” season it comes alive. But that gets old and there are so many other plants to try. Why wait?
I have my first one. A neighbor gave it to me last Spring. It has bloomed 4 times. It's a pink one and only got around a yard tall. The last bloom had 12 flowers. I think if you keep it in a smaller pot, they will not get big. I'm concerned about putting it in a dark place all winter. Seems like it would shrivel up and die. I need to bring it in now Oct 15 before the cold damages it. That's a long winter, if I cannot put it out until May, 7 months!.
I can assure you that it will do just fine kept in a dormant state in a dark cool basement. It’s worked for me for years. Just be sure to offer a drink every month or so to prevent it from totally drying out.
@@heatherhereshegrows OK thank you will do!. Enjoyed your video @
How do you know the amount of gallon bag to use?
I use Smart Pots and they have a wonderful tool on their website that gives recommendations on pot size based on what you want to grow. I started with a small three gallon pot when the tree was small and then potted on as it grew.
Good harvest. I dig and drop too.
It’s such an easy method that works.
Very useful info. Interesting on baking the eggshells. I've tried sprinkling crushed eggshells and as you say, they take a very long time to decompose.
Baking speeds it up but I also just toss unbaked shells into holes as well if I’m in a hurry. They break down eventually.
Hey girl .. Nice Melons 😂 Beautiful Winter Squash!! This was great useful knowledge on dig and drop composting. Thanks a mill 🙌 I can't imagine dog(s) barking 😄 Your husband wants more Pepper Jelly, he's not fooling me! Nice harvest forsure. I always do see the hawks, but I have noticed More than ever have before this year. I'm blaming everything on the SICKadas. I saw different insects as well, that I had never seen. I've went so far as to thinking where I should go far Away from here, when the next brood comes along. I can do without Them! Hugs to you 🤗 ❤️
Hey there Gina! And yes, he definitely wants for pepper jelly. But he’ll eat them whole like we would an apple. I don’t know how he does it but the hotter the better for him. Crazy!
Are your raised beds on dirt or are they enclosed on the bottom? Love gardening but always love when it’s time to close down!
Hi there! The beds are bottomless and resting on compacted soil. Quittin’ time is always welcomed!
You shouldn't use a plastic pot 😊
Great video
Thank you!
Great video. You’ve done a fabulous job with your gardens!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I couldn't hear what your saying. But I enjoyed looking. Pretty garden
Yes, I’ve had some trouble with the audio. Sorry about that. Still a work in progress but thanks for watching!
Loved loved loved this whole thing!! My house is an older building Spanish style and my first floor bd rooms is south front and Dining is East then West just the way it all sits my front and Dining room doesn’t get the great light so I have to be aware of those issues. So I’m ready for your winter content!!
Wonderful! You’re off to a great start watching the light around your home!
Subscribing and looking forward to future videos.
That’s wonderful and thank you so much!
Your landscape is beautiful! I’m in a Chicago suburb with a yard on a slope also and been trying to create privacy but on a budget. Wish I could visit your garden and get you to visit mine for tips.
These sloped suburban lots are challenging! Thanks for watching!
Girl! That is EXACTLY what I do with the windows 😂 .. my yard is a fish bowl
This is so helpful. Looking forward to the whole series!
More to come! Thanks for watching!
I love it! So important 😊
Excellent video! I have a similar yard and want all this too.
Thank you! It starts with blocking views.
I have been working on privacy for 9 years now, I have a similar space, and have invested alot into my landscape but have some not so savory neighbors I have no idea on how to block.
That’s so discouraging when people can’t be civilized. I appreciate that growers are developing conifers, trees and shrubs with small space in mind. It makes blocking views in tight spots so much easier. What plants are you considering to make your space more peaceful?
@heatherhereshegrows looking for deer resistant conifer, im not sure if I should plant close to house or close to property line. I'm at the bottom of a hill and a neighbor looks from a second story.
@@lindahall1971That is my issue, but with neighbor so close to me. I'd need tall Arborvitaes trained to cocoon my deck! 😂 No privacy otherwise, and I can't even have a "deck tent", living in the association that I do. How Rude, these rules!
@@lindahall1971You’ve definitely got a double whammy…deer AND unsavory neighbors! You’ll have to decide which position will give you the privacy from those window views you want to block. I’m thinking some sort of juniper, fir or pine. But check out conifer kingdom and search deer resistant conifers. You might find something that fits.
😢😢😢😢 I get it 😢
I’m in a rural area so privacy isn’t a big issue, but I’ve been creating a garden on one side of our front slope. I take a chair down the driveway and sit down and look at the space. I move the chair slightly and do the same thing. I may do this for several days until a plan sort of forms. Love your garden.
I love that you bring a chair! It’s all about the marination process 😂! ❤
@@heatherhereshegrows 😂😂😂
My kinda girl! I’m always looking for ways to keep my space. Nice content.
I am too and thanks for watching!
Great ideas and I do the same!
I let my ideas marinate for a while before taking action.
You lurker you. At least you don't have a standing telescope in your window 😂 I thought you were looking at the lighting direction in the sky. I wish the HOA I live in would allow me to plant besides the designated areas, but will not. Sadly they are townhouses, haven't the privacy I prefer. My neighbor is literally 10 steps away, Heather 😵💫 Nice start to your new segment! If I've not mentioned before, my dad was a Deputy Sheriff in another state, for years. Thanks Heather. Always cute and such a pleasure and treasure you are! 🥰
Hi Gina! No telescope but I have had binoculars around my neck from time to time 😂! My husband, after 30 years of service, retires Oct. 31. Im excited for this next chapter! Thanks for watching Gina! ❤
@heatherhereshegrows Binoculars 😂!! Good for husband 🙌 Thank him for his service! Retirement is GREAT 🥰
I’m in an HOA in MN. Do you have to get approval every time you expand your garden like your side yard garden? Beautiful garden!
Technically, I should have but several board members walked past the house to see what was happening and loved what I had done. None of my neighbors complained about it and instead expressed how much they enjoyed watching the process so I think that helped too.
Beautiful garden, the volume is really low
I just turned my volume up.
I can hear, but yes, volume is low!
Volume is very low and I have it turned to max!
I just realized that! Sorry for the inconvenience and I appreciate you hanging in there despite the audio. I’ll have to see what’s going on. ❤
I love your flowers 👌💕I have questions I got American gold Rush to avoid black spots and I still got that problem how you keep your black eye Susan so healthy
Hi there! While less likely to develop leaf spot issues, it’s not immune as you know. Theirs a fungal cause and a bacterial, both of which can camp out in the debris beneath your plants so good sanitation is important. Also, overhead irrigation can be a breeding ground. Instead use soaker hoses to avoid getting the leaves wet. Good air circulation is important too.
What is the hardiness zones? It’s beautiful 😻
@@Mindy-s-channel hi there! It’s hardy in zones 5-8.
