Sharing my garden and everything I've learned from it with the hope that it will inspire you to get your hands dirty. Here you'll find the ups and downs of gardening in a zone 5b, Chicago-area climate. From a different zone? No worries. The ideas and practices are pretty universal. While no longer active, I rely on my master gardener training to create and maintain a healthy garden. Let's grow together!
15 Annual Flowers for Summer-Long Color
I used to avoid annuals, believing they were too high maintenance for my lazy gardener style. But the 15 annual flowers I feature in this video have wowed me and I think they will have the same affect on you. In both the landscape and containers, these annuals have provided constant color and gave more than they required in terms of care from me. And for that alone, I will sing their praises.
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more garden content from a DIY gardener, click the bell to subscribe. That way, you'll never miss a post.

Winter Gardening: Potting On Geraniums and Forcing Amaryllis

Tip cuttings taken in early October from my favorite geranium, Big Eeze Pink Batik, are ready to be potted on. I'm also forcing my amaryllis bulbs out of dormancy for some much needed winter flowers. Winter Bird Feeding and a Grateful Mom Moment
มุมมอง 1.6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Winter bird feeding has been a thing ever since I was a kid. Even now that my kids are young adults, they still enjoy joining me in the garden to fill the feeders in the winter time. My oldest daughter jumped at the chance to join me in the cold to slather the trees with peanut butter and hang feeders. What a feeling it is to know that the things we did together throughout their childhood. They...
Repurposing the Christmas Tree and Other January Garden Chores
มุมมอง 695หลายเดือนก่อน
After many weeks inside following my daughter's surgery, I couldn't wait to get into the garden and check a few garden chores off the list. The roses and garlic were in need of a little protection and the hellebores and sporobolus could use some tidying up. Yes, it's January. I know. All the more reason to get out there and do something productive. It's the perfect antidote for cabin fever! Hi ...
Preventing Dieback and Winterburn on Conifers and Broadleaf Evergreens
มุมมอง 456หลายเดือนก่อน
Preventing dieback and winterburn on conifers and broadleaf evergreens requires a two-prong approach. Since I planted several evergreens in mid October, I decided to apply Bonide's Wilt Stop to help these young plants conserve as much moisture as possible during the winter. Before applying Wilt Stop, which is incredibly sticky so be sure to use a throw-away sprayer or clean yours immediately af...
Fixing Stretched Succulents and Propagating More

Fixing stretched succulents is easy and offers another opportunity to create more plants. Low light is the reason succulents stretch out as they search for more sun. 🍁🍂November Garden Tour 🍂🍁
มุมมอง 1.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Despite a few frosts and some snow, the November garden continues to deliver. When planning my gardens, I keep autumn in mind. I prefer multi-season plants as opposed to one-and-done types. Deciduous trees with blazing fall color, roses whose color deepens in response to cooler air and pink berries, yes pink, that get bigger as the days grow shorter are all part of the scheme in my November gar...
How NOT to Store Spring Blooming Bulbs Before Fall Planting
มุมมอง 6112 หลายเดือนก่อน
There's a right way and a wrong way to store spring-blooming bulbs before planting in the fall and I was definitely reminded of that this year. Life got in the way and instead of storing my daffodil and tulips bulbs in a cool, dark closet, I forgot them in my hot, dark garage. The deciding factor came down to temperature and we've had a warm fall, too warm for bulbs awaiting planting. Which mea...
A Fertilizer Soak to Speed Up Rooting for Late-Planted Garlic
มุมมอง 7573 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm experimenting with a fertilizer soak for my hardneck garlic since I'm planting it a little late this year. Actually, I totally forgot about it! I order my garlic every year from Keene in Wisconsin and discovered in their brochure their recipe for soaking and fertilizing garlic prior to planting. It's supposed to inoculate the cloves, sort of like a vaccine, to prevent damage from nematodes ...

How to Ensure Your Mangave Lives on After Flowering

Mangave flowers seem to appear overnight. Their stalks grow incredibly fast and the flower they produce is equally as interesting (and pollinator friendly). There's lots of conflicting information about it so I took it straight from the man behin...
Plant this North American Native Shrub for Birds and Pollinators

My love for birds in the garden is what inspired me to plant Viburnum trilobum 'Redwing,' a North American native shrub whose gorgeous red berries are a delectable treat. Also known as American cranberry bush, it's a larval host plant for Spring Azure butterflies too! Planting Hollywood Hibiscus in Self-Watering Containers | Here She Grows
Do you ever get gnats from bringing them inside? I brought a plant in once and had a bad infestation and now I'm afraid to do it again.
Hey Heather! I just got the peppermint patty bergenia last season. Can’t wait to see how big it gets next year! I definitely need to find a spot for the proudberry coral berry! I also want to find pore spots for evergreens! I don’t feel like our yards are much different in size and you have so many evergreens! I took a big bush out in the fall and have been wanting an oak leaf hydrangea for that spot. Excited! Deanna @gardensglory
Heather, I'm delighted to have discovered your channel. I'm in zone 6a/6b in a suburb of Detroit, MI so our growing conditions are very similar. Can you tell me what the small plants are that you had planted around the border where the cement basket was located under your cherry tree? They look to me like small lambs ears, but I may be wrong about that. Watching your channel has inspired me to start thinking spring!! 🙂
Hi Martha! Thank you so much and I'm so glad you're here. You're correct. Those are Big Ears lambs ears (also called Helen von Stein) and they're dying off due to the lack of light so they'll be moved to a sunny spot this spring. Counting the days to spring!
I grew the sunflower last year too and it was by far my favorite! I’m trying to scout it out this year too
It's so good!
Hi cheers from Toronto, Canada zone 5b & I just came across this video. This is exactly what I want to do infront of my sidewalk
Welcome, Jen! Will you be starting this spring?
@heatherhereshegrows absolutely will be starting this spring. Have many perennials & always put in some annuals (Already got my Proven Winners order in when it was there 20% off day, so can't wait) Always can use many extra flower beds
Where did you say you got the Sunfinity Double Yellow seeds? I can’t find them.
Hi Joyce! I didn't mention seeds for the Sunfinity Double Yellows. I think they're only available as plants right now. If you're from the area, I confirmed with Woldhuis Farms/Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park, IL, that they'll have them in stock this spring.
@ Unfortunately no, I’m in KY but I’ll be on the lookout for them. Thanks
Where did you find the peach canna?
I found them at Woldhuis Farms/Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park, IL.
Question, the Biden’s or any that you planted in the ground, did the rabbits go after them. I have way too many rabbits. But I’ve seen you have a puppy so that cld be why you may not have rabbits, lol!
Hi there! The dog isn't really allowed to be in the backyard during the growing season. He's a bull in a China shop. The rabbits never seemed to be interested in any of the flowers I mention. And I have A LOT of rabbits. That's not to say they're definitely rabbit resistant. But in my experience, they've shown very little interest.
This is awesome. Thank you
You're very welcome!
I don’t do many annuals, Heather. I too have the smaller sunflower. I love verbena bonarenisis and may have to try vanity. I also have senorita rosalita cleome coming.
Hi Peggy! Cleome is one I've not grown, at least not yet. I'll have to check that one out. Thanks!
Beautiful garden tour!
Thank you! I can't wait to be in it again. Counting the days to spring!
Cheers from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 zone 5b. I will be planting Supertunia Tiara Pink, that will be a pop of colour all season. Coleus also did amazing for me as well as pink guara looks so whimsical & people constantly comment & easy
Hi Jen! Coleus is one of the best foliage plants out there. Have you tried the Wicked Witch or Velveteen varieties? Pink Guara is another great see-through plant. I grew it in containers as my thriller several years ago but it never seems to do well in the ground for me.
@heatherhereshegrows that's my favorite coleus as well as caladiums I tried last year & they were amazing
Beautiful
Thank you!
Heather what a great list of annuals. What was the name of the last one you talked about - the white begonia? Didn’t catch the name.
Hi Susan! That was Hulu White. Couldn't get over it's performance in the shade.
I got three pink black-eyed Susan’s because of you! So excited for them to come! Watching your video made me get up and go check on my seeds. I have 70 lisianthus growing for my daughter’s wedding. Can’t wait til everything gets to go outside! I love that we only live a couple hours from each other, because I don’t follow hardly anyone in my same zone. Keep up the good work! I would love to go to the Ball Gardens! So much inspiration! Deanna @gardensglory
We're practically neighbors! I love hearing about your lisianthus and the fact that you're growing them for your daughter's wedding makes it that much sweeter. Lucky daughter! What colors are you growing? Last summer, the Gardens at Ball had beds of the most gorgeous lisianthus. You would have loved it!
Hey blue eyes. Cute zebra looking out this way! I love both the Vanity Verbena and the Orange flowers. So sweet they both are! Hibiscus are an always on my deck. Your gardens simply burst with happiness, Heather! I think Petunias can be nice, if not planted on a deck. Such a clean up mess otherwise. Thank you for sharing your E-Zees. Appreciated! 🙏🥰
Hi Gina! That zebra was a gift from my niece. I love it! The only drawback to the petunias in my opinion is the budworms that arrive every July. Simple fix though. Hope you're well!
Thanks for the recommendations! I was in the same boat as you - 2023 was really the first year I gave annuals a try. Slowly adding more into the landscape 😊
When you find ones that work hard and require little in return, you appreciate them so much more. Thanks for watching!
Suzie
Wow beautiful
Thank you!
Thank you for this video! Very helpful so I can mount my staghorn fern!
Thanks for watching!
How is the Breba crop on this fig? People say the Chicago hardy does not have a breba and this is a mutation of the Chicago Hardy? Does the Hardy Chicago ripen the main crop in Chicago?
I never had a Breba crop on my Chicago Hardy, just one flush of fruit late in the season, and I suspect the same is true for Fignominal. Mine is still quite young but I don't think a Breba crop is in the cards for it.
Love your garden. But wow every house, yard and car looks the same in your neighborhood. I’d kms 😅
Yeah, it's cookie cutter, but the garden gives it personality.
Those geraniums are gorgeous!❤
I loved them all last summer and I can't believe how such tiny cuttings can toss up the same beautiful flowers in January!
I wish you would have shown your grow light system
Ah yes, that will definitely be shared soon. Thank you!
Interesting video. I live in zone 8 and am currently wintering over my geraniums in my garage to protect from our freezing temps. They don’t look near as pretty as yours:) Will have to look into the process of taking cuttings for next year.
Geranium cuttings are new territory for me and I wasn't sure what to expect. I don't know if this is typical behavior or unique to this variety. Thanks for watching!
Can't teach an old dog new tricks! 😂 He's good in his own ways, as you know!
Ain’t that the truth! 😂
I agree with your thoughts on Amaryllis, waiting until after the holidays for blooms. I live in Michigan and we certainly crave a pop of color in February and March. I had such an issue with fungus gnats last year while starting geraniums from seed. That experience has stopped me from repotting or seed starting, it was horrible. I did use a “good” brand named potting soil but still had issues. Your geranium is beautiful. I’ll try to track one down this spring.
Hi Mary! Fungus gnats can really get out of control fast. Did you try Mosquito Bits? They contain bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and when used as a drench in water, kill the developing larvae in the soil. I also use sticky traps to catch the adults. It's a two-pronged approach that works well for me. I wrote a blog post about my experience last year which details the process. Here's the link... hereshegrows.com/2024/01/25/fungus-gnats/
Is your composting machine a Lomi?
Hi Vickie! No, it's a Vego Composter.
@@heatherhereshegrows Okay. Are you happy with it?
That’s awesome! I need to try this with my favorite coleus.
Ooooh yes, coleus would be another good one to propagate. So many gorgeous varieties out there!
Commenting so I see this garden mature!
Thanks for watching!
I live in Zone 9. My geraniums are in pots and stay outside year round. There are thriving.
It's 10 degrees right now and I envy your warmth. I'm 6a, recently upgraded from 5b, but still way too cold for happy geraniums.
Such great info. Thanks for sharing 😊❤️
Hi Vicki! I'm so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful, Heather! 🙌 Great information to share. You are an excellent gardener. Composting, water enriched with minerals, transplanting, to grow lights. Takes some education with reading and creating! Thanks for sharing, and hope all is well, with you and yours! ❤ Beautiful Geraniums!!!
HI GINA!!!! I can always count on you for a confidence boost. Thank you so much for your constant kindness. I hope you're well and winter isn't being too hard on you.
@@heatherhereshegrowsThank you dear 🥰🤗
That geranium is outstanding!
Hi Darlene, thanks!
Love her little cringing expressions🤣But how right you are! Also, she’s gorgeous, like you!
Aw thank you Susan. I'm just so thrilled to still have her in the garden with me.
How often do you water your amaryllis after potting them up? How much? Do you fertilize them?
I water about once every 10-14 days in the winter but that varies from home to home. Warmth and humidity levels differ so it's best to check the soil. If it's dry to your first knuckle, give it a drink. I fertilize using a half-strength organic fertilizer with every watering. So if it calls for 1 teaspoon per gallon, I do a half teaspoon. And I water until I see it coming through the drainage hole.
@@heatherhereshegrows thank you so very much for responding to my questions. Have a wonderful winter day!
Love your hair! My mom had a natural white streak. So cool!
Thank you! It took me some time to accept that I'm going grey. I was so self conscious of it. But I really like it now.
@@heatherhereshegrows mine is completely white(I’m only 61), and I get lots of compliments on it. Yours is absolutely gorgeous, and I hope it’s very freeing for you to enjoy its natural beauty. It’s a good thing about living in our time. Acceptance of the beauty in aging.
I've never been a huge geranium fan but I got a couple to grow this year after watching your videos:)
That's fantastic!
Gorgeous! On my list. 😃
I just hope we can find them. These new varieties take some time to make it out to garden centers. I've had luck asking garden centers if they can order something in for me as long as I do it some time in advance.
Love this, issues with roses happen to everyone. Where did you get your arbor? I can only find flimsy ones.
So true! I ordered the arbor from Amazon a few years ago. Here's the link to a similar one... www.amazon.com/dp/B0C68TXZWT
Again, thank you for sharing your garden with us. It truly is spectacular!!
Thank you so much!
Just found you and subscribed. Your gardens are AMAZING!! I absolute love that you share all the names of the plants. Thank you so much. I have much to learn!! I will keep watching your videos over and over. Hello from Pennsylvania!
Hi Madeline! What a wonderful message to wake up to this morning. Thank you so much for your kind words and I look forward to sharing more from the garden. Have a wonderful day!
What a beautiful side garden. I really appreciate you sharing the names of the plants.
Thank you! Sometimes I forget the names and have to go back and look them up. There are A LOT!
So nice that you're helping the birds 🐦 to get through the cold winter. I was outside with my granny and my mother as well all the time. The love for birds and other wonderful animals came from that. Those sparrows are in danger in Europe and not invasive anymore.
It's a wonderful legacy! The sparrows are in decline in Europe but thriving in the U.S. They are especially aggressive toward our native songbirds. I'm amazed by their adaptability in some of the worst conditions.
Your daughter is your mini me! Looks like a good time was had. Enjoy your channel.
Hi Peggy, thanks! I'm tickled she still enjoys being in the garden with me.
I’m a Newbie & native to the Chi😊. Love your garden 🪴
Hi Kelly! Welcome and thanks for watching! Where in Chicago?
I love feeding our backyard birds, too! Great selection of birdfeeders! Suggestion: I find the Niger thistle seed goes bad/stale quickly and the goldfinches won't eat it. And it's expensive. Instead I put fine sunflower chips (from WBU) in the thistle feeder. The goldfinches and many other birds love that seed and feeder. The Northern flickers feed on it, too, and bring their babies to the feeder in the spring. We have a branch perch and stick attached to the pole system. The babies sit on the perch and the parents will feed the babies. Fun to watch! WBU sells the niger thistle but the employees agree that it goes bad quickly and they like to feed the fine sunflower chips, too. The Stellar Jays love the whole peanuts. They see me come outside and one always seems to be on the lookout. He/she will call out and the rest show up to feed. They are hogs and will eat all the sunflower seeds and suet they can get.
I hope you do a follow up. I was waiting to see all the birds come after all of your work lol thanks for sharing.
Hi Sylvia! Once the feeders are hung, it takes a few days for the birds to find them. Unfortunately, I had a squirrel invasion that cleaned out the peanut feeder, meal worms and figured out how to scale the feeder pole despite the baffle. Thanks for watching!
I love the repetition and space u have to enjoy seeing the mulch as well.
Thank you! I like to divide plants from the garden like allium and sedum. They fill in quickly and are great for pollinators. Low maintenance too!
I have been considering winter sowing a few Salvia varieties not available locally. The plants in question are Summer Jewel Salvia (Red and Pink varieties). My concern is Salvia seeds require warmth to germinate (70°F) and warm conditions to grow. For such a small project, I am not purchasing an indoor lighting system. That said, any idea what kinds of issues I might run into winter sowing Salvia?
The Summer Jewel series doesn't require cold stratification to germinate, so winter sowing likely won't work. As you know, they require consistent warmth and light to germinate. So you'll want to surface sow them. If you're not interested in purchasing a grow light, perhaps try a warm bright window and a small heat mat. At some point though, you'll need to provide better lighting because the seedlings will start to stretch and weaken. Good luck!
@@heatherhereshegrows I changed my mind. LOL! I have some grow lights arriving today. I ended up sowing the Salvia 6 days ago, with the belief that the Salvia would take 7-14 days to germinate (average last frost date for us is March 10th). Of course, the Salvia started breaking through the soil mix in 4 days! Poor little things are stretching right now, but I should have some good light on them later today. Hopefully not too late for the lights.
