  • If you're wondering how to make a garden feel private, there's one important thing you must do before you ever pick a plant or dig a whole. And that is nothing! Seriously. Once you've decided that you want to make some changes in your landscape, especially in urban and suburban spaces where homes are on full display to neighbors and passersby, understanding your views from inside and outside your home is the best way to make some informed decisions and plant placement.

    Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

      I just realized that! Sorry for the inconvenience and I appreciate you hanging in there despite the audio. I’ll have to see what’s going on. ❤

    OK I am SO glad that I'm not the only one that does this.... I literally have spent the last 10 years staring. Staring in my Pj's, staring with a cup of tea, staring w/ a glass of wine. Just looking & observing. It's so important I think to just spend the time seeing where your "weak" spots are and I also would place a stake and look at it from all angles. My neighbor probably think I'm a little off 🤣

    I’m in a rural area so privacy isn’t a big issue, but I’ve been creating a garden on one side of our front slope. I take a chair down the driveway and sit down and look at the space. I move the chair slightly and do the same thing. I may do this for several days until a plan sort of forms. Love your garden.

      I love that you bring a chair! It’s all about the marination process 😂! ❤

    You lurker you. At least you don't have a standing telescope in your window 😂 I thought you were looking at the lighting direction in the sky. I wish the HOA I live in would allow me to plant besides the designated areas, but will not. Sadly they are townhouses, haven't the privacy I prefer. My neighbor is literally 10 steps away, Heather 😵‍💫 Nice start to your new segment!
    If I've not mentioned before, my dad was a Deputy Sheriff in another state, for years. Thanks Heather. Always cute and such a pleasure and treasure you are! 🥰

    Loved loved loved this whole thing!! My house is an older building Spanish style and my first floor bd rooms is south front and Dining is East then West just the way it all sits my front and Dining room doesn’t get the great light so I have to be aware of those issues. So I’m ready for your winter content!!

    I have been working on privacy for 9 years now, I have a similar space, and have invested alot into my landscape but have some not so savory neighbors I have no idea on how to block.

    • @heatherhereshegrows
      @heatherhereshegrows  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s so discouraging when people can’t be civilized. I appreciate that growers are developing conifers, trees and shrubs with small space in mind. It makes blocking views in tight spots so much easier. What plants are you considering to make your space more peaceful?

    • @lindahall1971
      @lindahall1971 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @heatherhereshegrows looking for deer resistant conifer, im not sure if I should plant close to house or close to property line. I'm at the bottom of a hill and a neighbor looks from a second story.

    • @ginafriend1690
      @ginafriend1690 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@lindahall1971That is my issue, but with neighbor so close to me. I'd need tall Arborvitaes trained to cocoon my deck! 😂 No privacy otherwise, and I can't even have a "deck tent", living in the association that I do. How Rude, these rules!

    • @heatherhereshegrows
      @heatherhereshegrows  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@lindahall1971You’ve definitely got a double whammy…deer AND unsavory neighbors! You’ll have to decide which position will give you the privacy from those window views you want to block. I’m thinking some sort of juniper, fir or pine. But check out conifer kingdom and search deer resistant conifers. You might find something that fits.

      Technically, I should have but several board members walked past the house to see what was happening and loved what I had done. None of my neighbors complained about it and instead expressed how much they enjoyed watching the process so I think that helped too.
