Huh, have they changed what a CBT allows? Used to be you took the CBT every 2 years and that allowed you to ride a 125cc motorcycle. Such as the Yamaha 125 (nimble, quick in corners, but not very comfy) or the Kawasaki Eliminator 125 (nice ride, very comfy - like sitting in an armchair, problem'; it cornered like an armchair). Spent quite a few years riding those bikes way back when. EDIT: Ahh, 16 year olds are limited to mopeds, 17+ and a CBT = 125cc motorbikes.

Gotta love those e bikes with 10kW motors or so, speeding in the streets without license plates and let's face it, mostly used in the south by certain demographics to evade the police... As if this thing can't kill you the same a motorbike would if it crashes on you... The main difference is anyone can get it but don't need any drivers license or license plates.

I live in a busy south wales town…… people and kids riding around like they own the road . They pay no tax or insurance and then have the cheek to knock mirrors off cars and ride off !! Now I think all e-bike riders should be licensed, and insured and registered. Helmets compulsory also . As a matter of info I’ve riding motorcycles for 40+ years. Also drive a 4x4

where I live in Sunderland, there is too much e-bike abuse and the police are powerless. every day I see youths on e-bikes wearing balaclava going through red lights, over taking, undertaking everything in front of them at well above the 30mph. They're also pulling wheelies down roads full of kids playing football in the streets recently I spoke to the Police and they say they are not allowed to chase them unlike the metropolitan police in London. I think all bikes capable of above 15mph should be road registered with number plate & insurance, just like mopeds, so once they are traceable to the owners address, people may become more responsible riders. I have a full bike licence and love the thought of owning one of these, but morons are not even adhering to the highway code

As long as the distinction between a bicycle and a motorbike remain. E bikes should function like a standard bike but with electric assist. The laws need a massive overhaul to ensure we keep bicycle and pedestrian spaces safe and get more people to use personal electric vehicles over cars for single person journeys.

The law around 'peddling furiously' has been around for BICYCLES for decades, it's not new for ebikes. Pedal assist at 250 Watts, is exactly what it says on the tin. It is there to assist. It an ebike, not a moped. Back in the 1970s mopeds had to be 50cc, no restrictions on HP, and be able to be pedalled.

It's called a full circle, where a previously unregistered principle of free transport where a user is anonymous becomes a registered user who has to pay and be registered.

Sur Ron is a small, quiet , slim, motorbike for thieves to nip down alley ways as a getaway vehicle. That's why the police don't like them and TBF, they're right, besides, they're shit. A Proper bike like a KTM/Honda/Yamaha is so much better off road. Pedal assist bikes provide great exercise, particularly for injured/old or injured old people, like me. And for three road and particularly track days, I like my Yamaha R1.

Hmmm... I'm not sure I really agree with you. I think the law covering ebikes is fine as it is with one exception. I would like motor assistance up to 20mph rather than 15.5mph. This would allow ebikes to more easily travel at the speed of an ordinary bike. It would also be much safer - particularly in town centre or slow moving traffic. The point here is it should be a motor assisted bicycle NOT an electric motorcycle. You can, of course, have an electric motorcycle with the law as it already stands. You just have to insure it and wear a helmet. It can be pretty much whatever power you want - if you have the appropriate licence. There MAY be an argument for a class of ebike between these two things - perhaps along the lines you set out. I have been riding an ebike for a couple of years now and I certainly haven't felt the need for more power. It is, after all, a replacement for a bicycle. I happen to wear a helmet (most of the time) and have insurance because I choose to do so. I do NOT wish to be compelled to do so.

In the uk you have millions of oinks that will end up killing half the population with excessive speed.etc I will not be changing the law.

I find what pisses most motorists off in a built up area is being held up by bikes going at 15mph. in the country they are held up by having to adhere to the 1 mtr clearance gap when you are only allowed to travel at 15 mph, it just creates tail backs, they need to let them go at least 20 mph to stop all this nonsense most e-bike riders are not idiots on the road.

If you want more than 250w just get a proper moped/motorbike and stay legal. Too many dodgy ebikes doing way over 20mph on pavements and cycle paths

They should be licensed and insured just like any other vehicle. What happens if you hit someone else's vehicle or a pedestrian, ride off like most cyclists? If it's a pedal assist then it should be limited, it's a bicycle, if it can be ridden mostly under the power of the motor then it's. A motorbike.

There is no difference between cycling and motor assist but the minute you up the power of the motor it becomes a motor vehicle. Which means it should be taxed insured and the vehicle must be registered. why shouldn't they a lot of the infrastructure are being taken up by cycle lanes

Where i live at least. Surrons run the streets. Police do nothing about them doing 50mph on busy roads. I doubt they're going to stop a ebike that needs to be registered

Surely there should be some way to dsitinguish between a electric assisted bike and a motorbike powered by electricity. One should be ONLY on the road with a helmet. basically everything a moped requires. The other should be treated like a bike and require peddling. 50cc? With a cbt you can ride 125cc, thats almost triple. No car license required. And motorway thing is not a 125 thing. If you get a full license, you can ride that 125 on a motorways, nobodys business... Just killing the anemic thing keeping it pinned, but you can 😅

Our law should be the same as the US, 750w 20mph limit. No registration or insurance. Pretty much what i have now, I can ride 20 even without a motor and 750w is just enough to pull you up a hill at 20 unassisted.
