For me, it was the best VR experience of 2024. Sure, applause goes to Batman VR, Behemoth, and Alien. But Returnal with the VR mod is truly a game that can compete with titles specifically made for VR. I believe that if Housemarque wanted to, they could create a legitimate port for PSVR2 and PC in just a couple of weeks. I really hope that sooner or later, someone important at Sony will make it happen.

Wow really have you preordered? I thought a headset with base stations in 2025 would be completely out of the market, with no appeal whatsoever. My trial lasted 20 minutes at AWE Vienna in November. I saw some creators enthusiastic about it at CES, but I don’t know-personally, it has zero appeal for gamers. It's too small, lacks enough FOV, has color aberration, and what we tried had terrible framerate. That said, trying something at trade shows is always a bit chaotic, and it’s hard to fully grasp the true potential of things.

@ thanks for replying. Yea, I did preorder. The fact that it uses base stations is a plus. Because it is the most accurate tracking method to date. Although I can understand some will not like it because if inconvenience. Would you say the FOV was less than say Pico 4 or similar? Maybe slightly less than meta 3? Also you’ve mentioned chromatic aberration. If this is on the edges then fine ot do you mean across entire lens? As for the frame rate, that is expected. This headset needs at least 4090 to run and they use 4070ti in their presentations.

@@JShodanVR No disrespect but given Pimax's industry wide reputation for poor qc and customer service, that is kind a valid question. This video was well put together and I do truly applaud you for your effort. But this video really does come off as a Pimax advertisement. Which in turn makes one wonder if you were paid. I am just someone who was very excited when the Super was first announced back in July. IMHO all the latest vr games: alien, metro, ArizonaR, behemoth are better performing on psvr2. So if you have the chance better to play there.

I'm afraid they've realized that wide FOVs create dozens of problems that are difficult to solve through their software without the support of game developers. There was also an article somewhere mentioning that even Meta tried to increase the FOV-there was a sample released-but they abandoned it. You're right that going beyond 4000x4000 is unnecessary, and they could focus more on compactness, reliability, audio, the cable, and so on.

Thanks for your message. No, the buttons are not capacitive. So you won't be able to track the thumb. However, I have to say that now that you mention it, it's been a while since there have been any games that utilize the position of the fingers on the controllers as gameplay mechanics. For which game or app did you think you needed it?

@ thank you for the fast reply! The gestures are particularly important to me for VRChat. Being able to do things like thumbs up and peace signs and such are very helpful, especially for communicating with Sign Language.

@@metroidmen Yes, you're right, I hadn't thought about VR Chat. However, if I may say so, since the controllers or VR Chat don't natively works on AVP and you still need to go through PCVR, I don't think these are the right controllers for VR Chat. There are so many other more targeted options available for using VR Chat.

This is because most of them plays sims with openXR. That's why SteamVr not register them.

Right now, I'm using a Pimax Crystal, which is performing at about 60-70% of its potential in Microsoft Flight Simulator and 100% in Elite Dangerous, DCS, and casual VR titles (90FPS). However, the headset is bulky, too big, and is also too heavy. I often dream about something like the Dream Air, but that's just a fantasy for now.

Vr is niche also because it has an unflattering old reputation to shed, thanks to shitty first experiences from normies and the "tech demo" games. Quest 3 is more than enough value for anyone who wants to jump into VR. Hell, it's one of the most impressive price per value wise tech in recent years.

You also need to consider that not all companies are like Meta or Sony, which can afford to sell products at cost price. There are companies that need to monetize through early adopters. If you recall, VR before the Meta Quest 2 priced under $350 was an expensive market. The prices of devices like the Vive, Vive Pro, Cosmos, and Index were far from affordable.

Its the highest resolution headset out there, you also need a high end PC to use it. Its not intended as a mainstream device, there are cheaper mid range headsets out there. The benefit of the LCD is also considerably larger FOV, thats probably the main reason for it.

Hum, the super is better for sim in the LCD versions. For the Fov for sure one of the reason. But also the refresh rate. The fact that you'll be able to change module, maybe with different lens and display. And for my personal opinion is that the super is born wired headset. The air will be in any case something in the middle. With the possibility to go wireless, and for my expirience for sim is alway better to have something more stable possibile.

@JShodanVR well refresh rate isn't really very important for flight sims because you can really hardly render at more than 45fps - especially at that resolution. I don't see why Type C display port should be worse than dedicated display port, and same with stability, given they use the same OLED optical engine. So yeah I reckon FOV is the main difference.

For flight sim you right. For sims like driving I think it matters. Yes on paper usb-c display port shouldn't be worst but any extra steps from gpu to headset usually brings some issue. We will see :)

Because the FOV with 50 PPD is 135 ° maybe?

The Super doesn't need DP2.1. The 12k needs DP2.1.

Super and I guess also Dream Air, doesn't required dp2.1. The 12k instead yes, but such a high bandwith is a problem to deliver. Pimax also tried to use two cables, but match the two display images is even worst.

@@JShodanVR I don't really agree with you here. Super will have to deliver almost 30 million pixels at 90hz. DP1.4 has got a bandwidth around 32 Gbps and I am not sure it would be enough for a native workload for Super. DP2.1 can not be used however, because it has got hardware (chip) limitations at present.

​@@Szabby999look up the varjo xr4. It's already working at those resolutions or higher with dp 1.4. no issues there.

@@L_Emir_de_Passy Varjo XR4 is 3840 x3744 at 51 PPD, so both the resolution and PPD will be higher on Crystal Super qled 57 PPD version. DP 1.4 can do 8K (that is 33 million pixels) 60Hz, so image compression with DP 1.4 is inevitable. However I don't think even 5090 could run this native at 90Hz, but a DP2.1 could have made Super a more futureproof product. Tomorrow CES starts, we will see the hands on reviews.
