Wisteria- A Guide to Pruning and Planting
Of all the videos I’ve watched regarding the pruning of wisteria this one shows the most common sense approach. By which I mean prune in July to seven nodes (7th month) etc. brilliant advice
@@nigelgraham5239 thank you… glad it was helpful!
😊
That was really helpful
Sending to NZ
Very interesting plants. Blood grass is the only one I e tried but never in a pot.
Unfortunately, we had no luck with Acres in pots. The didn’t survive frost in winter
It would have been the fact that they got too wet in winter rather than the frost, as they are fully hardy. It also may have been in too big a pot for the size of the rootball. Check out our video on growing acers if you'd like to give them another try 💚 th-cam.com/video/hIm1qi5NJqY/w-d-xo.html
Very informative video 🌱🌝👍 I grow most of my plants in pots.
Thank you for watching 💚
Wow! Great video!! Do you root prune your acers? If so, how often? You’ve the healthiest looking acers in pots❤
Thank you! No root pruning or feeding 💚 thanks for watching!
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos thank you!🙏
Yes! Thank you! Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' in a pot. Too much alcaline clay in the ground. 🎉❤
Thanks for that - so helpful. I planted 6 last winter (NZ) and 2 seem to be just dead sticks. They were quite rootbound and although i did everything you’re supposed to do - they still are not coming into leaf. They look dead but hen i scratch the trunk, it’s green. Do you think it’s just asking a long time to establish? (It is quite wet here). Thanks
@@kiwiopklompen if the stem is green I would hang on… they are quite late into leaf here… mid May earliest so still time for yours to sprout!
Can i plant a small acer directly to my garden or it needs to be in a pot?
Hi there! You can plant it directly into your garden as long as the soil conditions are correct, and you will need to water it regularly during periods of drought 💚
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos Thank you very much for the fast response,i appreciate it.Have a good day!
Thats one happy dog .....tail wagging away 🦮
Late comment great info thanks !
Thank you for watching! 💚
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos your welcome !
Are the leaves of this plant used as fodder ? Like are the leaves edible?
Not to my knowledge, no 💚
To fussy for me!
Thanks for all of the information and the video of the beautiful trees. It is interesting that I also have an Aconitifolium, but the leaves do not have the reddish color in the summer like yours does.
Your acer may be in less acidic soil and different moisture conditions, or also in a more shaded area. All of these factors will make the leaves more green 💚 Thanks for watching!
I love❤your videos and how you teach.🎉
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed 💚
Hi l live in the UK and have 2 potted Nandina Firepower shrubs about 7/8 yrs old. This summer 70% of the leaves turned brown and crispy and dropped off (there are some healthy green/red left) l must admit l haven’t cared for the shrubs that much as they’ve always thrived on little attention, until now that is! The compost in the pots has dropped a lot (exposing some roots) and I’m not sure what to do. I’m thinking of lifting the plants out and repotting with some fresh acidic soil.. and possibly cutting them right down.. but not sure. I would be most grateful for any advice you could offer as l don’t want to lose these beautiful shrubs. Thank you.
Hi there! It is definitely a good idea to take out and repot, possibly into larger pots. If they have been in there for 7-8 years, they could do with an annual feed with multi-purpose or ericaceous feed in the spring. I wouldn't recommend cutting them down completely, but you could certainly cut some branches back to promote new growth. The brown leaves may have been caused by our particularly wet winter, getting too wet in the pot. Hope this helps 💚
Struggling with turning a ball shaped into a small tree. You've given me hope. Thanks from California
Hi there! It sounds like you've possibly bought a variety that grows naturally into a ball shape?
Thank you for the video, and the tip to buy cultivars when in flower!!!❤
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching 💚
Do they produce bulbils between their leaves?
Yes, some of them do
Great tip prune a third .
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! 💚
Any recommendations for smaller gardens re width and height?
All the dissectum cultivars are slow-growing and ultimately will not be as big. Acer palmatum 'Shaina' is also quite a small one. Hope this helps 💚
Kudos to that man digging a hole in drought conditions! Looks like my soil in my garden…concrete! 😂
Love them ..can I ask …do bunnies like them, as the bunnies are eating much of my garden 😞..thanks
@@kathbiddle-dutton7069 generally rabbits do not go for salvias as they are not keen on their very aromatic leaves!
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos maybe I’ll give them a try .. thanks
I've got 5 in a pot.honestly didn't realise they can multiply so maybe I will have to split them up next year on all 5 pots! Lol. Great video btw.
They multiply even more if you can plant them out in the ground! Thanks for watching 💚
Do you have a video on how to train the cliber on a fence ?
Hi there! Only the information that is in this video- Just spread the vertical growths and attach initially, and then it should climb by itself 💚
Merci
I have a magnolia that had the problem you showed with your camellia that had very yellow leaves, I mixed liquid Sulphur into water, about 18 liters, poured it all around the drip line; solved the problem very quickly and has been good now for about 3 months.
Interesting. An old flowering plant. Thank you. ❤
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed 💚
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos Always. Nice to listen to experts. Btw.: Maybe one direct question: I would really like to have an Acer 'Bloodgood'. It would be an a clay slope, ~ 45°, but I would make a flat area for it, around 1 m x 1 m. The Clay is quite alkaline; pH 8-9. Slope: West-facing. Should I try it? - I have watched your video about Acers a few times, and I have come to the conclusion I should try it. Should I?
I'm afraid it really doesn't like clay, so wouldn't advise planting in this situation. Where do you live? I recommend looking around and seeing if any houses in your area are growing acers. If they are it may be worth giving it a go but my gut instinct says no given the clay as they need a lot of water and clay will bake hard in summer and not provide enough moisture. In winter it will sit waterlogged, and these are two things acers don't like. They will happily grow in a pot though!
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos Thank you! Greetings from Reiffenhausen near Göttingen in Germany. Many thanks! 💚
The problem with climber vines whether it's Boston ivy or anything else can rot out wood draw bugs & mice even termites, I planted morning glories years ago on a trelas against the house the vines had worked their way under the eaves & roofing that went into the attic so I removed the entire trelas & grow them now on a chain link fence 130' long & are yearly growing in southern California.
Agreed, that is why I grow the more vigorous types such as Vitis cognetiae and Parthenocissus as well as Wisteria up into trees and not on house walls
Black & Bloom is a nice runner.Better than black and blue. The Dutch have got a series of S. Guaranticia named after a series of LAKES around the world. I've had good luck with them.
Can they tolerate full sun?
Yes they perform best in full sun
Great video - thank you! My Katsura tree is one year, about 5 foot tall. I am hoping to see significant growth this year and experience the color and smell.
What!??😂 lol
Greetings from Ireland, Great video about salvias, We have two amistad and two love and wishes all in pots. Our flower garden is in the front of the house and there's a glasshouse and a no dig veg bed out the back. I keep the salvia's in an unheated glasshouse over winter and then in early May I hide the pots up against the front wall to give passers by the illusion that they are growing in the ground. I use slug traps filled with a homemade bait to keep them under control.
Thanks for watching 💚
Where are the the nurseries that grow camellia in now york?

Thanks for the great video. It is interesting that the two large Osakazuki trees keep there lower branches unlike some other trees. I just planted Osakazuki but I am not sure if it is Osakazuki or Osakazuki akame. The leaves have a slight amber shade in early spring but then change to green in the summer.
Acer palmatum Osakasuki akame is very similar to Osakasuki in terms of leaf colour but has a broader form.
Extremely informative thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Do not plant these unless you are in China. Your own region has beautiful trees you can cultivate. Don't landscape with invasives!
Paulownias are not invasive here in the UK. Part of the joy of gardening is being able to use plants from all around the world. Botanical gardens have an important educational role for students/people who cannot afford the time or money to see every plant growing in its native country.
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos Maybe they are not invasive, but they are not native. So they don't support nearly as much wildlife as a native tree that would fit in the same niche.
@@tschund3762 How narrow minded! We have 20 acres of woodland primarily of native oaks, hornbeams and chestnuts… all fantastic for wildlife. Alongside this we have a lovely collection of ornamentals from all around the world which not only add to the beauty and variety in the landscape but also have educational value for horticultural students. Variety is the spice of life!
@@GreenIslandGardensVideos narrow minded? its just a fact. thats awesome you have 20a of woodland supporting native wildlife!
Thank you for uploading! I work at a school in the USA and our student parking lot has a handful of these beautiful trees! From a distance, I thought it was weeping wisteria growing amongst the greenery of all the other trees, but as I got closer I said to myself "these share a lot of similarites with Digitalis, or Foxglove!" They feel very velvety and the inside is moist just like a foxglove!! So glad I could identify this tree that's been a beautiful view driving into work Bravo, thank you for the video! 👏👏
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed 💚
What i love about the Amistad is it flowers for months even had flowers in December , and cuttings take so easy ,and the bees love them too. Thankyou Fiona
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Thankyou I feel so chilled. I have just bought two of these but scared my self to death. It states on wiki, it’s toxic on the skin in the sun. But you have touched it and not been scalded? I was going to throw them out because wiki scared me. Am I safe?
In the almost 30 years that this plant has been here at the gardens we have never had a problem handling it with bare hands. A few people do find that they will get a rash like a burn from this plant in the sunshine, so the precaution of wearing gloves and covering your skin while handling the plant is recommended. I hope that doesn't put you off growing this beauty, but do take care and wear gloves if you are concerned 💚
Just got done tearing one of these ugly things out of my yard. Terrible things.
Thank you for this very informative video. Is one of your dogs a Ruby Cavalier King Charles? I have one and they are lovely dogs and he is very good about my garden, loves following me around while I work. I just picked up Amistad today and can't wait to see it take off.
