What Everyone Should Know About Digital Accessibility with Sarah Horton and David Sloan
Aired: August 22, 2024
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDT
Overview:
Digital accessibility is a team effort where people in different roles have different responsibilities, with a shared set of guiding principles that apply across different technologies. All too often, accessibility education efforts prioritize specific technical aspects of accessibility. Without an understanding where digital accessibility fits within the context of disability inclusion, learners’ efforts to effectively apply knowledge and skills may be hampered.
In their book, What Every Engineer Should Know About Digital Accessibility, Sarah Horton and David Sloan provide a broad-based approach to learning about accessibility, through introducing foundational principles that underpin learning regardless of the role of the learner and the technology with which they will be working. This webinar builds on that approach, exploring the challenges of effectively defining and teaching foundational principles of digital accessibility to learners in different educational contexts. The panel will bring diverse perspectives on ways to address core concepts of disability and digital inclusion, user accessibility needs, assistive technology, core attributes of accessibility, guiding principles and standards, and implementing accessibility in professional practice.
Panelists: Sarah Horton, David Sloan, Dr. Yasmine Elglaly, Sarah Lewthwaite, and Meenakshi Das
Moderator: Samantha Lynch Johnson
Hosts: Samantha Evans, IAAP/G3ict and Kate Sonka, Teach Access

    39:19 In stead of these 90° corners, I would have gone for an easier but also more elegant curvaceous trip. If the angle turned out to be too steep after the probably important investment, it seems the 4th stage of the decision making chain, the testing/improvement went seriously wrong. In the end, the elevator alone would have been sufficient ?

    Electricity and toilets are not visually invasive: it still is possible to make nice pictures of an old building. So, the "no no's" are not targeting modern additions in itself, but visual pollution: modern shapes and angular design, conflicting colours etc. I think that if a good compromise between style and function can be achieved, accessability will become less "controversial". Today, the focus sometimes is too much on let's get inclusive quickly, in stead of thinking it over how we can increase that inclusivity in such a way it won't spoil the historical sight. Two flies in one catch.

    Anyone that starts an interview with 'My pronouns are" would instantly not get hired by me, shows inmaturity, and mental illness (or they support insanity), sorry but most sane people can tell a person's gender and race without help. There is no need to let people know your pronouns or skin color because you are basically calling them stupid, you are assuming people can't tell, or even worse.. you assume people CARE. Gender, race and sexual orientation mean NOTHING and have no value during an interivew, only experience matters, its the only relevant information that should be given.

    Good video. I do hope they improve the techniques and tools. While auditing is feasible on a few pages, it becomes nearly impossible when your site has multiple subsites and thousands of pages;

    A good pro argument: audio description will help with automated action recognition, video-to-text compression. The machine learning field just needs more training data.

    How do we know if we need a VPAT/ACR?

    • @UnitedInAccessibility
      @UnitedInAccessibility 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The decision to create a VPAT/ACR should be based on a combination of legal requirements, customer demands, industry standards, and a commitment to providing inclusive and accessible products or services. Regularly reviewing and updating accessibility documentation is essential to stay compliant and responsive to the evolving landscape of accessibility standards and expectations.

    Clearly "working towards" growing recognised standards is commendable yet, it appears the other WHO Global Pandemic ICD-10 in DSE operators "eye-strain and visual repetitive stress injuries / monocular adaptations" predictably presenting Asthenopic / myopic suppression of vision in one eye to reduce convergence / 3D vision stress accounting for presenteeism, an average 20% loss in productivity and increasing the risks loss of spatial awareness, perspective and depth perception. WCAG 2.1/2 generic minimum website "Colour Contrast Validation" has been addressed and with the 2019 ISO 30071.1 "Display Screen Colour Contrast Validation" or risk assessment remains solely subjective or intuitive without use of an objective measurement of optimal adjustments, adaptations or customisation interface contrast settings for the individual. th-cam.com/video/2C1jmwGIsGQ/w-d-xo.html
