Personal channel for random videos I make.
No, your Remington 740/742 is not a "Sub-MOA" rifle (And That's Okay!)
In today's video, I take at the Remington 740 (again) and explain why you should be hunting deer and not groups.
The Remington 740 hits the range! And we get actual data for what these rifles can actually do.

Let's take a look at the pistol I've owned for the longest time. As my first semi-automatic pistol, I wanted to showcase it a little bit. It's not perfect, but it's good. The CZ platform has a modern mystique surrounding it. I'm very familiar, as I've shot it for years competitively. Hopefully I shed a little light on the platform that hasn't been covered in various other videos. If you like th...

I haven't lost too much this year!

Stumbled on your channel this morning whilst drinking my coffee before going deer hunting. Awesome video!
I have always been a fan of the mil surplus as an ex soldier..i use surplus bags for both my setups
That particular gun/ammo combo with you shooting it may not be that accurate. You cannot base all those guns off your test. Some guns of the exact same make, model definitely shoot better than others... I gurantee there's some of these old remington auto's with the right ammo that are legit shooters and print tiny groups all day...
When the bolt latch broke on my father's 742 I completely rebuilt it. I took it completely apart down to the smallest spring and pin. I refinished the wood (not as well as you did) and started basic reloading for it. Mind you it was just reloading for cheap ammo with no tuning. I'm not a great shot but I get by. I only shot 3 shot groups with it. It never shot group larger than 2.5 inches. Occasionally it would shoot 1.5 inch groups. Mind you that's with a 3 power Weaver post crosshair scope. I killed a moose at over 300 yards with it. I think it would be a little more fair to the rifle to shoot 3 shot groups. My 30-06 warms up pretty fast. One of my uncles made some amazing shots with his even at running deer. His son too come to think about it. It's not my first choice for western hunting but here in Atlantic Canada it was very popular even though they were poorly maintained. It was one of those rifles with a low mounted scope that actually fit me great for quick off-hand shooting. It actually feels like the 870 when you shoulder it. Three uncles and my father swore by them. I use a Sako bolt action in 7mm-08 now but kept the 742 for nostalgia.
Great video and I agree with you that the Remington semi auto rifles are great guns. There been a lot of deer taken with these rifles.
Excellent video. Quite the investigation in terms of time AND esp. ammunition costs!
Bs my was sub MOA all day with walmart ammo
I just picked up a 740 a few weeks ago to go with my 760 , I love the old Remingtons.
Great video! 👍🏻
And yes you guys need the dead cat wind screens on the mics. But that’s pointing out the obvious
@@kcstottyeah it got a bit windy. But you take what you can get sometimes with the weather.
You know I seen the first REM 740/42 vid you did. Liked it but didn’t know if I like the channel and the personality. As soon as you said “ this is the definition of putting race gas in a Pinto” you had me. Yep you are my kind of people. Keep up the great work
Need better audio!
excellent job. You honor the intention of the sales crew and the specialization impulse at several points, while pointing out the unnecessary and even absurd aspect of the industry. This video may have converted me (and I just spent a pretty penny on matching bags for a sweet rig)
I’ve utilized a lot of alternatives to outfit the pair of Surly ECRs my wife and I have used for many dozens of long bikepacking trips including GDMBR in 2018. Usually I didn’t find a bikepacking specific product that fit our needs, or our bikes, or what I thought was reasonable to spend. So I found alternatives, always at a much lower price, and utilized skill, tools, and repurposed materials to make the kit fit. I judge my success by never having wet gear, and never having any abrasion wear on bags or anything. Although I’m very satisfied with my lower cost custom kitting I do understand the appeal of kitting a bike with off the shelf bags and attachment hardware. If there is something immediately available at a reasonable price, that fits your bike and your methods then it is nice to unbox and install and be done. I always started by trying to buy off the shelf bike specific kit. Maybe some of the off the shelf stuff is better now. I don’t know because our improvised stuff has worked so well that at 7 years and many thousands of miles I’ve not needed to explore replacements.
I purchased one of these in mint condition for 200 bucks about 4 years ago.
Please share what ammo works best in your rifle? Also ammo choice seems to be critical what would you recommend?
Another video is going up this week. I tested 4 different ammunition types to get a good sense of what this rifle was capable of. Stay tuned!
Awesome video. One of my favorite rifles. I'm 56 years old consider myself pretty knowledgeable with that rifle along with the pump. Your video taught me a lot from beginning to end.🍻👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
i salute you
great idea
Excellent review! Thank you.
I dunno if i would call it a "good bad gun" Its a product of its time (glocks not withstanding). Its essentially the final and best iteration of the browning system. When it comes to reliability and so on, its really just a personal preference between the 92FS, CZ 75, and Sig 226. (Star 30m has trash parts avaliablity and support, and its also a browning clone)
I was recently gifted a 3rd Gen 4043 (.40 S&W). I still think these are some of the best pistols S&W ever made.
Thanks man I really needed to hear this 😂
Genius. I can't wait to visit my surplus store. What a great idea. This is so fun. I bet you could stitch a label on them and sell them as bespoke 😅
Now you're giving me dangerous ideas! I know people who modify surplus jackets, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Good Video! For me It is another rifle to add the collection. Looking forward to the shooting video.
I have the 4006 I love this pistol.
Smart guy, thanks.
I have a 1963 742 in .30-06; lovely rifle, no issues. I am also a 60 year old farmer. As a farmer of a certain age, you understand that virtually everything in your life requires lubrication. Grease is your friend...
Just put a 7400 in 270 win on layaway at a pawn shop with a 3-9 ×40 leupold for $470....modern but looks great
Nothing wrong with those old rifles, though I personally prefer the 760/7600 pump versions.
Great pistol silly man dont waste ur timd on this channel
The sound. 😂😂. Have i shown you my collarbone breaking video?
@@TheBRad704 do you have a video?
I seperated and broke my collar bone in high school when i flipped my atv... it never healed right and eventually they had to cut the end of my collar bone off and put 3 screws in to correct the placement. The most important things I learned from doing it the hard way is DO THE STUPID EXCERCISES they give you for rehab. They can be so important to get the muscles back into working function. Otherwise the muscles atrophy because they dont get used as much. I waited to start using my shoulder again and it was so much weaker than i ever thought. I literally could barely curl a 5 lb dumbell after i was all healed up. If they reccomend physical therapy and you have isurance go to every single one and actually practice the excercises they give you at home. Heck even go on youtube and serach collarbone rehab and do those excercises. Even today my left shoulder is only at 50% of what it should be. Luckily i dont have severe pain anymore but i wish i would have done the darn excercises.
@@corycarlson8712 PT is more important than the surgery. I've watched a man lose an entire total knee replacement because he didn't do physical therapy.
I’ve had two gifted to me. One fancy 742 woodsmaster that holds a steady 6 inch group at 100yrds and later a plain Jane 7400 that shoots amazing. Literally 1 MOA and willing to show it.
My man breaks his collar bone just to give us content. Hope it heals up soon, king, first fracture I ever had was around my collar bone, fell over backwards and twisted my arm up in to the arm break hold and believe it or not it breaks your arm. Edit: I said this after only watching the slung arm intro, so nevermind lol
Hey man, I'm really curious about the build on your SST. I love mine, but with a fairly high-end build it's still 33 lbs, and I have some XCM-type racing coming up in the spring that I'd like to use it for. Beyond the obvious (fox 34, inline shock, RSL bar/stem), what are the build highlights?
Certainly. Here's the build: SST Frame, size Large. Fox Factory rear shock, which is just a straight shock with no piggy back. Fox Factory 34 Fork, 130mm (non stepcast, around 1750 grams). Sram XO groupset, 10-50 cassette. Carbon Sram cranks. Eggbeater 3 Pedals, crank brothers. ESI silicon grips. DIY Carbon 30mm internal width wheelset with Bitex hubs (1500 grams). Maxxis Recon Race, Maxxspeed compound 2.4" tires. Bike Yoke Divine dropper post. Shimano XT Brakes, single piston, and 180mm rotors. With this wheelset its a little over 27 pounds. With another wheelset, it's about 28.5 (beefier tires, slightly wider rims, etc). Biggest thing if you're thinking about using it for some XCM stuff is tire choice. The Rekon Races roll fairly well, but not the fastest out there. That's where the real power savings come. But I'm comfortable on them for a big race in the mountains.
@@Deanosaurous Thanks! I have xx1 with a 10-50 and eewings on there with a Pike Ultimate and Super Deluxe Ultimate currently, but thinking of picking up an inline shock and swapping the 242 dropper for a lighter 170-180. I've heard the suggestion to focus on wheels/tires before, so I'm building up a wheelset with Nextie Premium Cross Country rims and some flavor of XC tire to save weight/rolling resistance where it counts.
@@duncanwright301 that will make the biggest difference. It's like having two bikes in one.
I had the original 39-2 and a 915. Very good weapons. 39 was my first pistol as a young man. It got stolen and later returned... felt weird. You talk about production costs "then and now". Look into the Sig 210 from the late 40s. An amazing piece of art. Rolls Royse grade of pistol...from a factory. They had a batch released to milsurp around the early 2k's. I was also very much flat busted at that time. They were only going for about 500 each.....
@@michaelkaiser1864 they certainly are well made. You can debate the necessity for a pistol built to match grade tolerances for general military use, but you can't question their fitment.
Never seen you before. Very informative and well spoken thank you sir. You get a subscriber.
The tomato stake remark is still in use. It applies to the Mosin negant. The shit stain of rifles the world over. Not because the rifle is bad. It’s because of the owners. They buy a mosin and they think they own the best made rifle in history and tout it at the top of their lungs. The mosin owners are the actual tomato stakes.
The FAL is a great design. If all you had a FAL and a Browning High Power... you'd be well served. Through out history both have been used to fight evil.
Hola. Esa pistola se cae al barro, y mojada y llena de barro sigue disparando. Lo sé por experiencia. Un saludo desde España.
In MI and SC you can hunt with dogs. I don’t.
You got it all wrong
Up here in Canada there was a company called "Globe Firearms" that in the 1950/60 time period converted 7.62x54R Tokarev rifles to shoot .303 British. While that sounds today like a stupid idea back then it made sense to take a heavy long rifle that shot ammo that you could not get and convert it to a shorter, lighter rifle that shot common ammo. One of the problems was that there was a lot of corrosive army surplus ammo around and lots of these rifles were basically destroyed by not being cleaned properly after using this ammo. This was not helped by the redesign of the gas system that made it harder to clean. So, similar issues to the 740, but with some other complications on top of that.
Holy molle, this is a great idea!
Excellent work. Some history for you. The 1911 is the first gun designed to be built from a random box of parts from random companies. That was a major factor of adoption by the US Military. It's not that shocking that your box stock Tisas frame and box stock Remington/Para slide work together. The parts that need hand fitting are generally parts designed for maximum accuracy vs being a drop in part. So your Bar-Sto barrels, custom triggers, etc need a little bit of fitting. I've always heard that a 1911 that rattles when you shake it is a reliable 1911.
Are there ticks there i figured she would pick up ticks
We don't really have ticks at this elevation. I've never seen any of my dogs pick them up while out and about. This was around 9k feet.
Hmm, $7 bags on $170 racks !! I definitely fit the bikepacking / mil surplus venn intersect. got some Flecktarn and Strichtarn pattern canvas poncho pairs in a box waiting for me to make some rolltop minimalist panniers and a frame bag.
I enjoyed your video. Very well presented. 7400 was my first deer rifle and was very happy with it. Good day.
