Personal channel for random videos I make.
No, your Remington 740/742 is not a "Sub-MOA" rifle (And That's Okay!)
In today's video, I take at the Remington 740 (again) and explain why you should be hunting deer and not groups.
The Remington 740 hits the range! And we get actual data for what these rifles can actually do.

Let's take a look at the pistol I've owned for the longest time. As my first semi-automatic pistol, I wanted to showcase it a little bit. It's not perfect, but it's good. The CZ platform has a modern mystique surrounding it. I'm very familiar, as I've shot it for years competitively. Hopefully I shed a little light on the platform that hasn't been covered in various other videos. If you like th...

I hear another huge problem is it has a lot of parts in general, not just moving and one can always make the argument of the less parts, the better or simpler.
Why do CZ75 totally outnumber Glocks in IPSC??
Who cares?
Never heard of it! By the way, saying you got into bikepacking by doing the Tour Divide sounds like: "I got into swimming by joining the olympics" haha
Every brand has a great series, go for the best that you can afford.
lol that was fun. My dad used to say.... The jammomatics were never meant for match shooting. They were meant as stalking rifles so the guy who was watching the deer's tail fluttering thru the trees would have something to empty the clip at then watch in awe as said tail would continue to fly away into the deeper woods. He had two of them.
One of my favorite guns and I'm from Belgium
The grips are Arnie Vitarbo grips. Make sure you put loctite purple on the 3 barrel screws. Also upgrade to allen head screws .
God bless you! I never never tried a S&W 5900 magazine!
I like the 740 and 7400 but i much prefer the 760 or 7600 ,
My impression of the entire 740 series is an under engineered design that just did not have the ability to handle warmish factory ammo over the long haul. Gas port pressure should have been an adjustable design. That would have gone a long way toward improving the life expectancy of these guns if the end consumers had been astute enough to use it properly. As deer rifles they did ok with what average accuracy they exhibited. It don't take much to be minute of deer down in the deep woods. If you load ammo for these guns treat them kindly. Back off on the gas and don't use any powder beyond "medium" burn speed. 150 grain bullets at 2700-2750 is plenty fast.
Love the see thru holden "iron sighters". I have them on a 788 Remington. I cant tell you how many hunts those saved in dark rainy situations or crawling under brush and laurels to get to the other side. Really stupid that most of todays rifles do not have iron sights or at least no way to use them.
That Mauser you had was called an FR-8...don't know what they did to the stock but the weight, pitch, cast off and the steel but plate made it kick worse than my .375 H&H safari rifle. **The Mauser was legendary because of its RELIABILITY and ease of customization by gunsmiths when they reached civilian gunsmiths hands and could get a trigger job, bedding job and new custom barrel. While those semi Remingtons and Brownings were kinda sucky at long shots they sure were good for deer and boar drives when the game was running and jumping all over the place.
All I can say is it's a good thing there's no coffee in that cup
I have a 742 bought it after graduated before i went into the army still have it. When I hunted with if I messed witch I hardly ever did there would be a follow up shot about one second later. Dad was shooting a model 99 everyone was shooting a bolt action none of them could a follow up shot like that.
czech guy here.. 5:27 i knew that bag was familiar :-)
This in an improved version of the Khr30, also made in Germany as the FWB AW93. It was designed as a pistol for clubs in the Soviet Union by V Yarygin, a prolific gun designer. I have two of these and a lot of gunsmithing experience on them. The firing group is designed with a very long first sear, enabling a very strong hammer spring (without making the trigger pull to heavy). This makes the gun extremely durable. I see no need to replace recoil springs, like you often do on European guns. The second sear is in the form of an arc, which is theoretically ideal, this is very rare. It gives the trigger pull more of a "roll" feeling. To tune the trigger you will have too change the second sear spring to a weaker one and slightly round of the sear surfaces, and polish them of course. Fit and finish is generally very good, even though they look a bit rough, being Parkerized.
Is there a flawless pistol within a reasonable price range?
Just depends on what you value. There's no perfect solution, as pistols are very subjective. The same gun that's good at Bullseye shooting may not be good at USPSA or concealed carry. If you enjoy a pistol and you know how to shoot it and work on it yourself, then that's a pistol that works for your use cases. Arguing over "the best" is reductive. It's all about context. I enjoy the CZ75 platform, knowing its drawbacks. It's not a pistol I would recommend for someone just wanting a carry pistol or home defense option. But it's a fine option for someone who can appreciate the platform.
Canik tp9/sfx if you don't like glocks.
Not a tack driving machine, but certainly practically accurate. I believe the 760/7600s tend be more accurate and my 760 certainly is, I’ve had it outshoot many off the shelf rifles today but I do handload so that might have something to do with it but it can shoot most commercial ammo under 2 moa which is my standard for most big game rifles for shots out to 300 on deer. I cannot say I’ve shot one of the autoloaders but its design will not let it be as accurate in theory to the 760/7600 and certainly not as accurate as bolt guns.
I'll be testing the 760 next. Stay tuned.
@ I look forward to it, I have noticed more 760s to perform better than the 7600s, especially 7600s from the later years when quality started slipping.
😂 depends on the shooter, ammo and the rifle. My buddy had one that I shot dime sized 3 round groups all day long with it. He coould barely get 1 inch groups with it and it was his rifle.
I think I would have waited to get just a little more wind 🤦🏻
10 MPH head on measured via a kestrel. Didn't affect grouping at 100 yards.
There one of the best rifles ever made
It's definitely one of the rifles ever made.
Lol you shot one rifle and ammo combination and came up with your conclusion ? Please tell me your smart enough to realize every gun is different and one may shoot a completely different bullet weight and design lights out compared to others. You surely cannot be this misinformed, yet be giving any type of advice to anyone about firearms... Misinformation at its finest !!!
Sounds like you didn't watch the video
They rarely do!
Proficient, well rounded, video. Many thanks. ... Not mentioned, here, but, remembered by those in the early market, (50's-'60's), the Remington 740/760 family dominated due to economics, and availability. Browning BAR's were superior engineered/produced, .. but, low volumes, .. and, cost prohibitive for the majority of the intended market. ('50's/'60's) was a belt tightening period for the American working family. .... Dad was WWII/Berlin airlift non-com Air Force. Raised a family of 4 on $245/month.
Not if you buy ammo from a store!...yes they will rag a hole at 100 yards !!!...your way isn't the only way !
Great rifle inside of 100 yards!
a good tool steel slide stop regular recoil springs and a steel guide rod like you have done. yes the floating sear cage is odd, however these pistols run forever when maintained, they are accurate and they fit most hands like no other and they are reliable.
these surplus bags are not waterproof though, correct?
Ex 20 year Remington employee here. The accuracy is fine. No problem. The issue was you can get 700 rounds, maybe 800, max. The rotary cuts in the receiver wear after that and the gun is toast. The 7400 took care of that issue.
Interesting! What was your role at Remington?
@Deanosaurous humbly, I had a lot
A lot of jobs as I moved up the ladder. But my first job was a tech guy on the phone line, and I was also an Armorers School Instructor for 4 years. Remington actually did a buy back of the 742 in the late 90's because of all the issues. You could trade your 742 for a 7400 plus $100
It may work until there is a rainstorm. The surplus stuff you showed is cheap, but also mostly not water tight. One hour in the rain and everything is soaked. You can use plastic bags inside, but than you have to make sure the bags are fully closed and not damaged. I love my two Ortlieb bags I bought over 11 years back, used for 50 bugs, hassle-free, waterproof and reliable.
I was going to give a shout out to Ortlieb as well. I wouldn't bother with their newer "bikepacking" smaller bags, but for big, tough, waterproof panniers they're great. Had mine for over 10 years also, over half of which included daily commuting, the food shop as well as touring.
We have to look at what these rifles were designed to do and that was to take game at reasonable distances fairly accurately. They were never meant to be target guns or to be used like an AR-15. I have my dad's 742 in 30-06 in my safe. It's a 1972 model and probably hasn't had a box of shells shot through it, but he did kill a few deer with it. I'll never hunt with it, it's just an heirloom that will be passed down to my boys when I'm gone.
These are more expensive in the EU but not crazily expensive either, and I never would have thought of this. To be fair, they also don't look as waterproof as Vaude/Ortlieb bags, but if you don't know if you'll bikepack for the next 20 years, going cheap is the way to start.
Mine shoots under a inch all day long.
I'd love to see that!
@05:11.. The CZ 75 is NOT a “blow-back” operated gun. It’s a “recoil operated” (aka: “locked breech”) operating pistol. Yes there’s a big difference between blow-back and recoil operated designs.
This was Remington’s master plan to sell 700s!😂
Up here in New England the 740 and 742 in 30-06 use to be the most popular but times are changin. i have a 742 in 308 for over 40 yrs and with 150 gr it does keep 2 1/2in groups out to 300 yds but with 130 gr hand load 1 1/2 in out to the same. Not sure what that 740 you had went thru but lot of woodmasters shoot better than that one, besides looks like that range was windy as hell
0.5 MOA with Handloads, 0.75 MOA with factory eh? I'd love to see it.
Ive been going down the 740 series rabbit hole ever since randomly finding a mag for one in my parts bin. It needs a rifle to go in. The amount of opposing fudd lore surrounding these guns is absolutely insane. Im going to have to buy one, tear it down completely, take it to the range and see for myself.
I just baught a remington 600.
My father hunts exclusively with a 600. Neat little rifles.
I have a 742 in .30-06, with a budget 3-9x variable, that I bought in the '70's. It's unpleasant to shoot, like most lightweight .30-06's, but I can't fault its accuracy, nor its ability to stop what it hits cold. It's clearly a fully capable hunting rifle - not a target rifle, and there's really no upside to comparing it to a bolt action off the bench at 600 yard competition any more than there is comparing an SUV with an F1 Car. It's a handsome gun, great lines like most Remingtons, handy, well-made, and reliable like any machine - unless you abuse it - again, like any machine.
Years ago my FIL had a 742. It was a piece of junk. I wasn’t a dummy about rifles for several reasons and I tried so many things. If two bullets hit inside a 2” at 100 yards it was a miracle. Ended up using custom load about 15% under max for whatever powder we tried. Got stolen in a breakin.
Those see-through mounts are not helping your groups any. A raised cheeckpiece or lower mounts will tighten your groups, probably not to MOA, but tighter nevertheless.
Almost no one has a sub MOA rifle, I own one it is an anschutz single shot .22 (with custom .22 ammo from tenex) this rifle will shoot 1/8 inch groups at 50 yards. To put that in perspective you can fire a .30 round projectile and this rifle can fire 10 rounds through the .30 hole from a bench without any distortion of the .30 hole. In reality 1 MOA is rare from a factory rifle and isn’t needed for a hunting rifle. The rifle I’m I have is a ridiculously expensive target rifle made for Olympic shooters and 99% of people (im one of them) can’t shoot well enough to get what this rifle can do (my son shoots competitively for the 4H and is the only reason I have this). While completely unnecessary a sub MOA rifle will put 10 rounds in an 1/4 circle and the hole will look like a .30 hole but to guarantee it will do that every time will cost you 6-10k and unless your shooting for a gold medal 2 MOA is fine.
"Minute of Angle" is an angular measurement. 1 "MOA" is 1/60th of a degree. To visualize this, it is a cone of dispersion from where your bullet hits over various distances. At 100 yards, 1 MOA projects a circle 1.047" onto a flat surface. It is commonly used in firearm hobbies due to how close it is to 1" at 100 yards, and since it's an angular measurement it's an objective measure that doesn't rely on distance. The rifle we shot in this video as part of the calibration was a custom built bolt action capable of 0.7 MOA 10 shot groups, consistently. It has been tested several times.
First off that’s a precision rifle. That you are comparing to a hunting gun. I have a 1600 anschutz and yes it does very tight groups. But let me clearing something. That was purpose built to do what you said. If your going to compare a bolt gun to this. At least use a hunting gun or a old military bolt gun. From that time period.
If you refer to the video, we shot a 1958 Remington 721 the same day with the same ammunition. It also did about what you could reasonably expect with very good ammunition, which was 1.9 MOA.
@ I wasn’t talking down on the rifle I was simply stating a true sub moa rifle is very rare and almost no factory hunting rifle is going to shoot sub moa few will shoot 1 moa that takes a very special rifle to run sub moa
@@oldtruckoperator2106 i wasn’t comparing them I was simply stating that a hunting rifle that shoots 1 moa is rare and finding a off the shelf sub moa gun is not going to happen. To get a true sub moa rifle your looking at spending big money on a very specific rifle. That was my point which is why I said unless 1 1/2 to 2 moa is just fine for hunting I have many hunting rifles non shoot less than 1 moa.
Been around a few of them all but 1 shot great. The one that didnt had a bad barrel from factory. The big thing the scope is in them too high see through mounts, takes patience n tome to get use to them.Hard to get consistent cheek weld.
Thanks cobba for the enlightenment
I have a 742 that runs well. It’s not a tack driver, but it’s good enough for the woods.
Had a couple of them over the years. they’re Junk !! Mine was passed down to me from a family member who gifted it to me. I wasn’t long selling it , get a Remington 700 and don’t look back. On a side note you should be put in jail for those scope rings 😂
I've owned a couple of 740's and 742's in 3006 years ago and they shot about what your groups shot. good enough for me and more worried about ejection issues. I own a twelve or thirteen year old 7400 in 270 that shoots as tight as any bolt action I own. I attribute the 7400's good groups to modern manufacturing techniques.
Remington did a promotional video from over 50 years ago. They called it One At A Time. At the end they lined up three Remington rifles. The 742 BDL Custom Deluxe was the winner in the accuracy test. The Remington 742, 760, 742, 7600 were very popular deer hunting rifles in New York. On opening day this year, I used my 1968 BDL Custom Deluxe to harvest a doe. The following week harvested a Buck. Both deer were about 110 yards away. Both dropped, I was using a hand load from the 90’s. A green tip Ballistic Tip I believe was 180 grains. It shot more accurately to the Federal 150 grain ammunition I use for my Remington 7600. You have to clean the chamber. Remington was supplying a chamber brush because of the corrosion issue in the chamber. A classic movie from the 70’s Two Minute Warning terrorist sniper is using a Remington 30-06 742 BDL Custom Deluxe with a high capacity magazine. During the 80’s, the range had many shooting them rapid fire. The Remington 742 was never intended for being a military rifle.
My first ever hunting rifle, was a Remington 742 Woodmaster. I bought it used. Had a gunsmith zero it for me because at the time, I was a novice in the gun world. two days later, I went to try it on an empty field before hunting season. I put a rimfire target at 200yds. Using the top of my truck hood and my jacket as a rest, I shot my first shot and it was a perfect bullseye using 180gr Remington Core-locks. I was so shocked and excited, that it motivated me to get into the prescision shooting hobby.
Now a recall gun. Soft rail’s Remington has parts to fix them you will never see them. 1.2 million of them made I was told they were not meant to be fired
@@daryldavis5615 "Not meant to be fired" - what in hell is a gun meant for instead, if not to be fired???
In my previous video I went through some of the issues with the production. A big thing is these were not lubed correctly and 30-06 pressures increased substantially since the design was released, causing the guns to beat themselves up over time.
