Stratigraphy: a simple case at a historical archaeology site near Townsville, QLD, Australia
This is a short look at an archaeological excavation at a historical archaeological site near Townsville, Queensland, Australia. For my students in AR1001 here at JCU, what does this tell you about how stratigraphy works at archaeological sites?
Historical Archaeology Midden 3D animation - a smoother version
My beautiful 3D scan video - generated with photogrammetry software 3DF Zephyr v6.010 processing 31 images. This is a smoother version of the recently uploaded animation video. Recent historical archaeological excavation near Townsville, Queensland, Australia. A 19th Century midden (rubbish dump) in cross section. Very much enjoying learning what I can do with 3DF Zephyr. Great recommendation f...
Preparing a short archaeological excavation experience for high school students
This records the setting up of a 'mock' excavation here at James Cook University, Bebegu Yumba Campus, in Townsville (Queensland, Australia). This is something we do regularly for various classes; in this case it is in preparation for a short visit from a local high school's Ancient History class. Building a mock excavation not only provides some practical excavation experience for the students...
Archaeology Skills: stringing up an excavation unit
This is a basic guide to how to string up an archaeological excavation unit. It has been made for my students at James Cook University - especially for those who are unable to study on-campus. This year, 2020, that is quite suddenly the whole undergraduate population! Hopefully, you find this useful, and a little interesting, it is an early step in developing a basic toolbox of skills for the b...

We have been running exchanges since 2010, with the New Colombo Plan funding providing a major boost from 2015 to today. Social Work students learn about approaches to their field in a...
What is archaeology? A discussion piece for my students at James Cook University..'
This video is a short statement on what archaeology is and why we do it... It is meant for my undergraduate students at James Cook University as a discussion piece at the beginning of the semester. To my students: Is this what you thought archaeology was about? What questions do you have? Perhaps you don't agree with my points - let's discuss in class.
Clay Bangles at Ban Non Wat
This video is about Clay Bangles at the prehistoric site of Ban Non Wat, in Thailand. This is an artefact type that often ends up in the 'miscellaneous' category due to the fact that usually only fragments are found. These are found in mostly Bronze Age layers at the site. There is likely a lot more that can be learned from more detailed study of these sorts of artefacts.
A tour of the (mostly) Iron Age archaeology site Non Ban Jak, NE Thailand
This is a short guided tour of the archaeological site of Non Ban Jak; presented by Nigel Chang of James Cook University. The aim is to show the geographic & environmental context of the site and the areas that have been excavated in the past. The video mixes a post-excavation tour of the site with images and video captured during some of the excavation seasons. Non Ban Jak is an important site...
