Strata Florida Abbey - Ystrad Fflur
Grand medieval abbey where generations of Welsh princes are buried
The abbey of Strata Florida - Latin for ‘Vale of Flowers’ - has stood on lush meadows beside the banks of the river Teifi since 1201.
It was established by white-robed Cistercian monks as part of a movement that spread like a tidal wave across the whole of western Europe in the early Middle Ages. Soon it became the most famous church in Wales after St Davids - a place of pilgrimage and a linchpin of Welsh culture.
There are unmistakable echoes of greatness among the ruins. The carved west doorway into the abbey offers an epic view down the nave to where the high altar once stood.
You can still see some of the incredible decorated tiles that would have covered the floors of the church. Griffins, birds and fleurs-de-lis surround the enigmatic ‘Man with the Mirror’. This 14th-century figure dressed in a doublet and close-fitting hood is reckoned to be a symbol of vanity.
Strata Florida, or Ystrad Fflur as local people know it, is the final resting place for generations of medieval Welsh princes. The great poet Dafydd ap Gwilym is said to be buried under a yew in the churchyard. No wonder it’s been called ‘the Westminster Abbey of Wales’.

The luxury and bloodshed of life in a Roman fortress Life was hard for a Roman legionary in first-century Wales. When he wasn’t cooped up in his barracks or being barked at by a centurion he was out risking his life in skirmishes with ancient Britons. But here in Isca, one of just three permanent legionary fortresses in Britain, there were compensations. He could always hang out with his friend...

Cardiff Roman Fort
มุมมอง 7955 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my VR demo of Cardiff Roman Fort. A year ago I'd just started using UE4 and had never been in VR let alone develop for it. The project is still in its early stages but is already fun to walk around. In my next video I'll be replacing the Unreal Engine 4 animated manikins with Romans. I'd also love to replace all the game props with real historical items. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the vid...

The 4th Century Roman Fort of Cardiff without its internal structures. Those structures will feature in the next build. This forms part of my VR project for my MA at the University of South Wales. Built with: Alienware, 3Ds Max, UE4, Substance Painter, LiDAR & World Creator. The amazing music is by Danny Elfman.
Does 'Pendennis' Cornwall have similar origins?
Outstanding! ❤
😍 love it
Very Good!
I live close to here and walk around the ruins most days. The amphitheatre is still there (minus the roof and seats of course), and I love playing with the dog in it. It's great to see how it could have looked back then.
hi robert your work is excellent.. transformative even.. you should offer your services to time team, they'd be all over you I'm sure.
This is incredible good job!
Thanks for posting this Caerleon Fortress (Isca Augusta) is my absolute favourite place to visit. Fantastic video. 👍👍
I'm glad you liked it, thank you very much. Official Video out soon, I'll be sharing that in the next few weeks so feel free to follow.
Amazing work Robert. The landscape model leading up to the site must be huge! The lighting is lovely and very atmospheric.
Still awesome dude
absolutely astonishing work, and information to die for. i've been on a hunt for archaeological info around some of Wales' oldest relics for two months and i learned more about pen dinas in your description than anywhere else. Thank you
looks amazing! great work!
Thank you :)
Robert Gapper i start working on a same project in my freetime. Did you have a list of your meshes or something?
Thank you Mr Gapper I salute you. Impressive work.
Cool!
I’m confused, is this suppose to be a real place or make believe ......
This video demonstrates the early development of the Historical reconstruction of Cardiff's Roman Fort. I uploaded it for my tutors to see the projects progress. This also includes the historical reconstruction of the surrounding landscape. This landscape is now home to the Capital City of Wales, Cardiff.
Robert Gapper ah ok that’s really cool! I’m a keen metal detectorist, would you have any historical knowledge of areas that might be good for me to go & detect at? I’m part of the NCMD etc. So follow all rules
@@Mikeg4403 Where are you based, in Wales? I also detect and with the NCMD.
@@Mikeg4403 Go to this website and take a look around your area. Hope that helps. hillforts.arch.ox.ac.uk
Robert Gapper well we’re in Cardiff north but primarily in the vale & Bridgend...
Excellent work Robert - huge amount of work clearly been put in, with really good results. As you say, it'll be even better with some Roman figures! Nice one :)
Superb aerial photography. Nice to see it from a new angle.
I'd love to have the skills to be able to do reconstructions like this.
This is next-level stuff. Amazing detail, proportions, assets, scale. It's the most real-feeling virtual Roman fort I've ever seen. I even love the robot placeholders. :) Brilliant work!
They should rebuild this, like castell henllys in Pembrokshire. Would be amazing to look back on the local heritage.
Out standing good video thanks for posting..
