Painting a Portrait for Sierra Club
I paint portraits for each quarterly issue of Sierra Magazine. This video shows the process, with some explanation along the way. The original piece is acrylic and colored pencil on 11x14 bristol paper. Feel free to ask questions below, I try to answer what I can!

มุมมอง 4.2K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Process video of a painting I recently completed for Dreyfuss & Blackford, an architecture firm in Berkeley, CA. In total, this took roughly 2 days to paint, and about a week of conceptualization and sketching. The finished painting is 24x18, acrylic and colored pencil on canvas. If you have comments about materials or process, please leave them below, thanks!
Painting Stanley Tucci for The Washington Post
มุมมอง 45K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Here we discuss the illustration process for a commission I recently completed for The Washington Post. The assignment was to create a portrait of Stanley Tucci which would be published alongside an accompanying profile article. A bit of a ramble as usual, but I try to cover the conceptualization process, the drawing steps, and the thought process behind color decisions. The final work is acryl...

The painting begins with an underdrawing, done in Faber Castell pencils. Then sprayed (in a well ventilated area) with workable fixatif, to prevent the drawing from smudging. Painting begins using a muted green color as the undertone, with colors getting progressively brighter, defined, and detailed.

Walkthrough of my portrait painting process , from the drawing to finished painting. I was recently asked to create a couple portrait illustrations for Esquire UK, who I've worked with several times over the years. This art was completed using colored pencils, acrylic paint, and bristol vellum paper. Apologies for the overexposure on video- this page is, and always will be, a work in progress.
Making the Cover Art for Jon Benjamin's "Jazz Daredevil", from start to finish
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I was commissioned by Subpop Records to create the album artwork for H. Jon Benjamin's "Jazz Daredevil". Working with the art director, the assignment was to create a sort of 80's style film poster featuring the Jazz Daredevil and surrounding characters and scenes, for a film that has not yet been made. In the video, I describe the process of creating the painting, from sketch to drawing to com...

Bravo, Maestro! Thanks for sharing your process. Will follow your work in the future!
Gracias ❤
...learn so much from your video and your description...far from being able to do this myself, but improving picture if what I need to do to improve. Thanks so much for the time it takes you to post these videos.
I always really look forward to your videos and get so happy and excited wheb you put out a new one! I learn a lot and they're also very relaxing to watch! It'd be great if you could include your photographing process and setup of the final piece in a future video. Do you retouch it somehow on photoshop after you've photographed it?
Hi Jon, I've really enjoyed watching all your videos. Love the loose, expressive underdrawing. I'm curious what happens to the originals for commissions. Do you send the original to the Sierra Club or whoever? Do you just scan it and email and keep the original? Ever gift it to the subject of the painting? Thanks
Ha! should have waited until the end to hear you say you scan it in. Still curious what happens to the OG art...
I own the original- the commission is for using the art in print and online for Sierra Club. Sometimes the subject buys their portrait off me later, not all the time though. I own a lot of portraits of people I've never met. Appreciate the kind words!
Also, I misspoke. I photograph the work, I don't scan it.
It's so enjoyable and enlightening watching your paintings come together. I wish I could be flattering to the subjects of my paintings, but mostly I just make people look kind of creepy, which, surprisingly, some people like.
Thanks! Flattering/creepy is always a possibility too.
I love your voice overs, I always feel like I learn so much
Kind of you to say, thanks!
Your colours are so delicious 😋
So the first time I watched this one the audio was fine, later this video kinda disappeared from the feed, and now there is no audio (there is music though). Curious about what happened there, file got corrupted?
This is awesome!!! I'm struggling with blending the colors with acrylic paint. How do you do it? How is your process?
I just picked up his book! Can’t wait to read it and this painting is great. Love your whole process!
Your work is beautiful. Could you please share how you created your original source drawing on the left? It seems like a lot of the magic begins there.
Amazing video! What brushes do you use?
Good Job!
Wunderbar
love to see it!
hi Jon! Do you have any videos showing how you pick your references? if not, could you make one about it and turn it digital to send to your clients?? Absolutely gorgeous work
Appreciate the kind words- for portrait commissions, the reference is usually sent to me, unless it's a very recognizable person, in which case I work off many images/video stillframes and sort of frankenstein things together so that the painting captures the likeness but is unique in execution.
@@artbyjonstich thats so cool!!!
I spent a long time developing oil painting skills because I thought acrylics were just for students. Clearly not.
There's great art out there made with crayons and glitter as well.
Wonderful!
Do you use the gray underpainting to set a midtone or to have it shine through the second layer of color? Thank you Beautiful work
Thanks, and both!
Immediately subscribed!
Love love love watching the process.
Many thanks!
Thank you for showing this.
Just discovered your work only a couple days ago, and I love it. Reminds me so much of mid-century illustration greats, like Al Parker and Bob Peak. Thank you for sharing your process; you've already been a huge inspiration for me and my own work 👍
That’s way too kind, appreciate the compliment 🍻
tucci... over exposed and rated, go away fool
As always beautiful work, but is it something happening with the audio? I can't listen to anything
@@jorgelh1925 thanks yeah I don’t know what happened, I’m gonna work on it, mega annoying.
Thank you for sharing your process
I notice that in your reels on instagram you often really experiment with colours. But with most of your paid/serious work you just stick to those 4 or so primary colours. Are you making a conscious choice to keep to that style of colouring? Is it so that you can focus one the work itself (composition, story telling, etc)? Are you attempting to have all your work be harmonious? I'm just curious! your work is great and I emulate your approach quite abit :)
I pretty much always start with primary colors or a limited palette in general. The experimental stuff is just that, and bits and pieces of those exercises make themselves into all of the work in more subtle ways usually.
So good!!
Excellent video, very inspiring 👍
Thanks! Appreciate it.
Is there a reason why you paint at a 90 degree angle? Seems like it would be uncomfortable after a long time.
Beautiful Gennaro sangiuliano portrait
I’d really like to learn how you got into illustration work , you work with so many amazing companies. I’m a long time artist but a new comer to making money from it
Well done
This, is, sooo awesome.
Wonderfully done! Are you moving from darkest to lightest, coolest to warmest as you are laying down and then back and forth as you go?
movie "Bruna surfistinha" 2011.
That's anime quality right there 🔥
😂😂😂
May I ask what the ballpark budget for this was? Editorial budgets have been on crazy decline for the last 10 years, and I've been forced into using more and more digital media, just to keep the time spent down.
I could do all of this very easily, yet I will never be paid for something like this by anyone other than a small individual, because my father was assassinated when I was 2 by the people who have all the money.
Either I'm not a fan of Stanley Tucci, or else I never liked any of the acting roles he played. Whenever I see him, I know I'm better off switching the channel.
nice! when he was all purple i couldn't help but think, "is that whats under the mask in nintendo's original friday the 13th game"
Wonderful ❤
Great timing with The Zombies intro! 😀
Gracias ❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing this Jon!
Hi! I love your work sooooooo much! What type/brand of illustration board do you use?
This makes me miss my illustration career, but still painting.
I just love this. The likeness is wonderful and the entire composition comes from your imagination. This is a wonderful alternative to a photo.
