While I was happy with the response overall, I got the sense that some viewers felt I implied that "Under Wraps" should be skipped or wasn't worthy of the deluxe treatment. Mulholland Dr. is the gift that keeps on giving, RiP.
@@salimadam104 the harddrive I use to edit all my TH-cam content is called ‘Mulholland Drive’ :-P
what's your favorite David Lynch film?
I can't call myself a Lynch fan. I found Blue Velvet, in particular, to be too painful and unpleasant to enjoy even on an artistic level. (After seeing the opening shot and thinking "Oh boy, this is going to be great.") But Mulholland Drive is one of my very favorite films of all time.
@@michaelpdawson Mulholland Dr is a fantastic flick. One can still be a Lynch fan without liking every single work, I think. :-)
I haven't watched Eraserhead in decades. Time to go back and throw this on. Blue Velvet first! I couldn't get into Twin Peaks... it was some weird shite that I had on me... the music and something else just didnt work for me. I will try and try... and I guess I will again. That happened with Firefly. One day it clicked in. Love that series now.
@@Phlakaton88 I think I’ll spin BV tonight ! Let me know your thoughts.
Well you asked for our thoughts on this album, but you might not like what's coming...so here we go, as a Genesis follower from when i was introduced by a friend to the Nursery Cryme album all those years ago the band ended with the departure of the great Steve Hackett, Phil said they should have changed their name when they couldn't replace Steve and later Tony concured. Genesis became a completely different band in 1978 and the magic of those classic albums left with Steve and remains there to this day, (Ant also has this gift) the rest struggled mightily without the left field compositions of their former virtuoso Guitarist. As for Duke it has many faults, the suite should have been on one side as they performed it in concert, this strengthened the Music considerably and to split it up was artistic suicide particularly when the rest of the compositions weren't exactly top notch, i mean Misunderstanding for goodness sake 🙄. Nothing they attempted without a Guitarist was anything like what they were capable of as evidenced by their floorless earlier works. However it was considerably better than some of the stuff they released on their road down the regressive route and finally ground to an ignominious halt. So there is not much i agree with you on your assessment. However i have watched your reviews on most of the Tull catalogue and pretty much agree with you on that subject. Thanks for posting and it's just my views and nothing personal 😊
Yeah, that’s cool ! I think Steve’s a wonderful guitarist but I’m not moved much by his solo material to be completely honest.
Thanks for your reply, Steve's first four solo albums are his best and that seems to be the general consensus, however i recommend his solo and ensemble acoustic Guitar albums and concerts, his later albums "To Watch The Storms" and Out Of The Tunnels Mouth are extremely good. Where he's at his best is in the live arena and there's so many live performances of Steve and his many line ups to choose from plus the video releases on Blu Ray and DVD 📀 keep posting 👍😊
On vinyl here and still love the album so much, thank you.
Duke I call Puke. Genesis were big p-ussies by then, and then would only get worse.
Bravo! Great video. I never understood why Roots was overlooked. As far as I am concerned, it is as inspired as any 70s Tull record and an anomaly in that regard, as compared with other post Broadsword albums. It is also a return to prog, with new influences thrown in, which makes it stand apart. Fantastic. Divinities is a great companion album too, although I wish both albums had been less bright sounding. Because Roots does not seem to be very popular, I guess a deluxe boxset is unlikely though.
@@xara6657 Ian’s son James says there’s plans to do everything up thru Dot Com, so don’t despair
I’ll be interested in your review of the upcoming box set! I’ve never been a big fan of this album but I do need to revisit it!
It snuck up on me over the years - I thought it was flawed for a long time but suddenly I realized it’s apparent ‘flaws’ were actually some of its strengths.
I have the exact same setup. With the exception of the subwoofer. I had the Sony sub but the amp went out. I replaced it with the SVS PB-3000. Major upgrade lol. Also, I have my rear surrounds right behind my couch. I used to have them further away but was having trouble hearing them without my neighbors knowing what I was watching lol. Super glad I moved them closer. It’s way more immersive to me. Great video!
Trio Genesis appears in the second part of Cinema Show so that predates the Lamb.
It sounds to me as if you're perhaps more of a Lamb fan rather than a Genesis fan? I mean, a Genesis fan wouldn't hesitate to double-dip or to buy however many versions there are of ANY Genesis album.
@@SpaceCattttt not the case, actually ! The Lamb is the one I perhaps have the most nostalgic love for, but Selling England by the Pound, Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Duke, Foxtrot, even And Then There Were Three are albums I have a lot of love for. I’m probably kidding myself saying I wouldn’t double dip for half a dozen others. :-)
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout Well, all right. But don't ignore the 80s albums. People dismiss them as commercial pop stuff, but I find them just as progressive as anything else they ever did. If anything, I'd say that those pop albums showed that it's possible to make prog rock appealing to the masses. It's not easy, but when it's done right, the result speaks for itself.
@@SpaceCattttt I have explored as far as Abacab - which is an album I like a lot, and I’m big on the 3 Sides Live album and Bluray which I showed in my review when talking about the core trio Genesis. S/t is on the list for an sacd release from AP so I’ll get it when available.
The remixes are a totally different beast. The levels of the Instruments and Vocals are noticeably different but the biggest and most controversial change is the Backing Vocals that were not present or mixed way back are now way up in the Mix. The other thing I noticed on this Remix and the Selling England Remix is the de-Rickenbackering of Rutherfords Bass. The notorious growl that the Rick produces is tampered back. When he stopped using the Rick Bass he did abandon that style of tone. The Remix makes me wonder if the change was intentional. The 5 Band Members were very involved in the Remix projects and some interesting changes were made. On Nursery Crime Harlequin merges into The Fountain Of Salmacis which it did not on the original Mix. IMHO a Remix should be used to gain the best possible clarity while making it as close to the Original Mix as humanly possible. I do think that 5.1 Mixes are the perfect opportunity to take Artistic Liberties. The 5.1 Mix of The Lamb is a dramatic experience where the Vocals that you never heard before come popping out from a rear left speaker and the Fly from the windshield goes buzzing around the room etc… I know your post here isn’t about the Remixes but my main frustration is the constant reworking of these great Albums and what eventually becomes the go to version. It’s quite a mess. As Tommy Lee Jones says in Men In Black about the latest Audio Technology “I guess I’ll have to buy The White Album AGAIN”. I don’t know about everyone else but I just can’t afford to keep up with it all.
They are my Beatles too. This album was my gateway drug into xtc. Black seas seemed like a cut below. For me English settlement is the high water mark, but so many of their albums I love. My favourite band to this day. I was 16 when that came out. Thanks for your insights and posting this.

The Lamb is also my fav Genesis. I love it all, from start to finish, no filler for me. Love the story and all the images it conjure. My favorite side is side 3. Beautiful piano, guitar and a very nice Gabriel with lots of feeling. The Waiting Room live is killer (lots of great sounding bootlegs of the Lamb tour by the way). I need to dive into SACD I guess 😛. Great video Ian, keep on proggin' 👍
@@progfrogian9226 I was trying to think of another double album I like the same way I like The Lamb, maybe The Wall is the only relevant example. It has similar pacing too, with a contemplative and quiet side 3.
@progfrogian9226 the lamb is also my fav Genesis, with selling. My favourite side is also side 3 (specialy anyway and the lamia). I haven't had the luck of see them live, but i have seen peter gabriel, phil collins, pink floyd, roger waters, king crimson, marillion, roger hodgson, rem, the waterboys, the cure, the chamelleons, sting, natalie merchant, lana del rey, immaculate fools... good music is one of the best things in life.
Since the live version was released, I no longer actually listen to the studio version. The live version is a much more satisfying listen.

No need to add real drums, just put the live recording on with Doanne Perry on drums. Leave the original album alone, but maybe remix it and add some extra bass to the toppy drum sound.

@@ignatzmuskrat3000 balloon pop is present on Slippermen ! I’ll have to listen closely for that nylon part
@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout thx! It isn't there on the Davis remix!
Thanks! It sometimes amazes me how we often hear differently from one another! I bought the Atco *Lamb Lies Down* & it sounded quite good, but a bit noisy, so I replaced it with a Charisma UK copy (a somewhat different album design!) & that was *it* (no pun intended) until CDs appeared. That 1980's 2-disc set you mentioned is the only CD in my entire collection that I couldn't accept. It was obviously made from a safety copy & had a ton of tape hiss so I traded it after a few weeks & kept listening to the LPs (I skipped the "definitive ed"). I now have the Nick Davis mix SACDs (mastered by Tony Cousins) which are terrific. The album didn't really need a stereo remix-- the 2 channel master is excellent-- but the surround mix from the multitrack is quite nice. (John Burns got a great drum sound!) My only complaint is that my copy is Japanese & the story (it's really a multimedia album) is reproduced in tiny print on a mini gatefold.
@@patbarr1351 thats the first time I’ve ever seen anyone praise the Davis mixes !
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout The 1st group were done for 5.1, which lots of people don't use. (The Atco versions were DVD-video sound, not SACD.) I've heard some people complain that the discs are "too hot" on the CD layer, especially the 1st remixes issued ( *Trick* thru *We Can't Dance* ) but that's down to the mastering. The early Trident LPs are quite murky sounding & Steve H mentioned that, saying that was just the sound Trident had at that time. The remixed *Trespass* is amazing, with those 12-string guitars sounding much clearer & warmer (I have a 1970's UK LP for comparison).
Hairless heart is my personal favorite track from the album.
The core trio thing was very evident in concert as well... Hackett and Gabriel would be gone from the stage for extended sections.
I was at the 1974 tour in Cleveland, the date Gabriel told the band he was leaving. Sixteen at the time and had no idea what an historic event I was attending. Mind blowing performance capped off with the encore of Musical Box and Watcher of the Skies.

Ian, I have only now just relistened to taab dts 5.1, not sure if it's just my setup but, its really let down by the crazy compression in the first 3 mins. really kills all the stabs :( i hope this is a mastering issue because the rest of the albums is excellent and similar moments in aPP sound awesome.
I will investigate
A top 10 all time album. A beastly and amazingly ambitious listen. Live versions were Intense and brought out Phil’s brilliance. I have that late 80s release. Big ugly thick cd case and man is that paper yellowed now. Haha. I will definitely be comparing the new box to that. I never did grab any other versions because friends had complaints over the sound and it scared me. Oh yeah. I wrote a script for this in college. Got an A- haha. Professor was very confused by it all and liked it anyway.
A friend owned that original 'fatboy' double Lamb CD back in the early '90s, from memory it sounded awful compared to my vinyl copy, very mid-range-y with that infamous AC mains hum very noticeable in the background.
@jeffsimon9594 I can totally agree with that. I'm so looking forward to a new copy. If I didnt buy so much other music I would have probably got the 2007 one but ... lol. Never happened.
