Gentlemen! I really enjoyed your enthusiasm and passion for King Crimson. I've followed the recordings and live performances since first having my mind blown listening to the John Peel radio show in 1969. My absorption with the development and metamorphosis of the band on a voyage of discovery, prevents me from ranking the albums. Waiting patiently for each new release, often after significant changes in the character and personality of the music, led me to extend any musical knowledge that I might have had with each new album. New musical genres unfolding with each step, requiring persistency, concentration and research to fully appreciate every progression along the way. Consequently, I don't have the capacity to rank because each one has delivered different experiences. They are, in my mind, each cornerstones of the bands growth over the years. Perhaps like children who come from the same stock but each having different characteristics and personalities. You love them all equally, even if they resonate with you in different ways. Doctor Diamond, It's time for my medication now! 😂
@@jimshepherd2311 Ranking is really just for fun, to start a conversation. My list could change next week. Maybe I’ll have an epiphany on Islands and decide it’s a hidden gem 😂
@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout I wasn't a great fan at first but seeing the band perform a large part of it with Boz, Ian Wallace Pete Sinfield etc it changed my perception and now I really appreciate it. Rank away and have some fun. It's just that I genuinely can't. It's my close evolution with them over the years. I'll still have fun in my own way. Love your other reviews too!
Nice couple of videos guys. I'm on a KC mood lately, preparing myself for BEAT in 2 weeks. But my KC knowledge is very sparse after Thrak sadly. I know you are not big on Islands, but try to get your hands on the Sailor's Tail boxset. They play lots of ITWOP, Lizard and Islands stuff and most of that stuff is killer live. And most of that stuff was professionally recorded. Prog on 🤘
@@progfrogian9226 that set looks looks interesting for sure. I like that it includes the preceding two studio discs as well, on blu ray. I think Starless set is a greater priority for me, though. 😊 enjoy Beat, I badly wanted to go.
@@progfrogian9226 thanks for the offer ! I have access to most of the recordings but I would love to hear the bluray content; Night Watch 5.1 is of particular interest.
I put my personal list on the first part of these videos including the box sets. I love King Crimson, I think they are THE best band ever and we will not see anything like them again. I rate them with the great classical artists of the past, Shostakovich, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Villa-Lobos.
Music is so subjective. I loved Thrak upon release, and still love it. I never considered whether or not it sounds dated. Does, it, for instance sound any more dated than Nirvana's albums? I definitely don't think so. Yet, those Nirvana rekkids are revered to levels way beyond my belief. I find The Power to Believe to be one of the most sterile albums in my collection. I've just never connected with it. I guess I am just not a fan of "industrial" Crimson. That being said, I think that The ConstruKction of Light is much better. I realize that that may be because I saw them on that tour, at one of the most revered and acoustically sound venues in NYC (Town Hall). Seventies Crimson is what changed my life and what taught me that there was more to music than classic rock. It also encouraged me to jump head first into jazz which I favor by far (in all of its progressive and new-fangled forms) all these years later, so here goes: 1. Starless and Bible Black (the playing on Fracture just supersedes the playing on anything else in their catalog in my view) 2. Larks' Tongues in Aspic 3. Red (way overrated in America, not so much on the other side of the pond) 4. Thrak 5. Three of a Perfect Pair 6. Discipline (I have no need to hear Thela or Elephant Talk ever again) 7. Beat 8. In the Court of the Crimson King (just too bleak to be ranked any higher for me) 9. In the Wake of Poseidon 10. The ConstruKction of Light 11. Lizard 12. The Power to Believe 13. Islands (although this version of the band kicked ass live)
Larks I --- hands down my favorite tune in all the catalog. Larks is my fav album too. :) Sooo... The Sailor's Tale has nothing to offer you? I LOVE that one. I'll offer up my oddball opinion. Discipline just doesnt get me all hot like others do. I have both Three and Beat above it. Beat in particular. My fav 80s album.
@@ShedSoundsMediawithIanBeabout I dont think you are. It does have some subpar tunes compared to other albums no doubt. I guess I have a different angle on it being older. The instrumentation has me waxing some and it's rare since I generally dont like slower sappy sounding stuff. Ladies of the Road is all swank and attitude to me. IDK... it's not my least favorite album. That would be Construction of Light and a lot of the live material in the late 90s up to The Power To Believe... which is a top 5 for me.
@@Phlakaton88 Sailors and The Letters are by far the best things on the album to me, I think Ladies could be tolerable if it were instrumental, LOL. It’s still not enough though, I can hear the band’s exhaustion
What's your favorite King Crimson studio album ?
3.Starless and Bible Black (Is it Really a studio album??) 2.Larks Tongue In Aspic 1.Red I prefer the Live Crimson 1972-1974 though !!!
