I video my cycle touring and wild camping adventures!
Scorchio on the Eurovelo 1 - Bikepacking Solo - SPAIN NORTH to SOUTH - Part 4
Bikepacking, cycle touring across Spain from Santander, Cantabria in the north to Malaga, Andalusia in the south.
Day 4 starts from the comfort of my Hotel in Valladolid, a diversion on a bridge sparks an encounter with a fellow cyclist to practice my Spanish!
Then I navigate through the exposed, hot open fields before finishing up in one of the many beautiful Spanish Villages Fuentesaúco. It was a hot one today!!

Yup! Chasing the clouds shadows may define insane. ..lol
Those pork scratchings wetted my appetite had to go to ASDA to buy some then carried on watching your video 😂😂. Nicer weather the further you head south.
some lovely views, the meseta or plateau in Spain might not look as green as in the north of Spain but it has its charm. Which model is your bike and what tyres are you using if that's not asking much? I have a 3X hardtail MTB, an 1X hybrid fitness bike and a 2X road bike, all of them relatively budget bikes and I think I am in love with the Elops Lond Distance 900 from Decathlon, and the Riverside 920 SRAM NX for a possible future bike, and I was just wondering.... (all of the bikes I have, eve nthe road bike, have flat bars, I am more used to them). Safe adventures!
Yep, an awesome day in the saddle. I'm on my Genesis CDA-30 with swable (spelling) gravel king tyres.... Cheers 🤟🏼🚴🏼♂️
Thanks for clicking! What a day this was, hot hot hot but stunning scenery, met a multi camino rider and the food wasn't bad either. If you enjoy it please hit Like and Subscribe ;-)
Great video brother Mark 😊 Those large 'pork-scratchings' looked delicious. Quick question... how do your chocolate bars not melt in the heat? It must've been nice to cycle alongside a fellow biker, even if he was a wee bit faster than you! 😊 xxx
Cheers sis, I put chocolate bars in my middle pannier rack with my raincoat on top, seems to protect them from the direct sunlight to save them from turning into hot chocolate.... Fernando wasn't carrying an extra 20kg and wasn't touring across Spain haha!!
@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventures yes, he did point out your pannier (extra weight) he seems like a good chap though!
Hi Roadypacker, excellent video again and very impressed with your conversational Spanish it's better than mine ! There must be times when you feel a little unnerved about if you are going in the right direction or not ? I have cycled in that sort of heat a couple of times but I won't recommend it ! Glad you are finding water, shops, and hostel's ok, good luck and take care, thanks for sharing 👏 👋
Many thanks for your kind words mi amigo! I had my GPS which was ok but at times it didn't like the mountainous areas and wasn't picking up the route (Wait until day 5, I go really wrong!!!) But as long as i was heading south all seemed good. The Eurovelo signage was sporadic at best but again, there's always google maps and locals were always at hand to point me in the right direction. Yes the heat did get to me at times but I paced myself and took shade breaks wherever possible to try to get my body temperature down before getting going again. Yes the hostals are great, I was very lucky with what I found. I did some more wild camping as well which is coming up later in the tour.... Thanks for watching ;-)
We did this route in May......I feel your pain.....stunning area
@@davidsmith6755 yeah it is such a beautiful country. Looking forward to going back for some more miles when funds allow 🤟🏼🚴🏼♂️🏕️
Beautiful view, watching from Nairobi, Kenya
Nice, what's the temperature over there?
you were so close to Aguilar de Campoo, lots of romanesque churches there. Well, romanesque churches are all over the place in Palencia, Burgos. Valladolid, Zamora, Galicia, etc, those are very ancient churches. Also gorgeous
Yes it's all so beautiful all along the route. It was a whistle stop tour for me, if it was on my path then i'd stop and have a look around but I didn't deviate too much.... there where some very interesting ruins enroute, I'm glad I got a lot of it on video as i've forgotten most of it already!! Part 4 is up tomorrow, one of my favourite days!!
I went this road from Aguilar de Campoo to Reinosa and around the lake some 10 days ago, nice memories. The sign of Camino de Santiago is not the Via del Plata, but Camino Olvidado 😊
Gracias! Yes it's all a bit confusing what rout I was on, I'm glad I had my GPS. But there were occasional dead spots which made it tricky at times! Lovely cycling though and those embalses are spectacular to cycle around! Bien viaje mi amigo ;-)
Loving the videos, what a great adventure. A quick question, was there a particular reason for cycling north to south (prevailing wind, ease of assents etc) or was it just the way it worked out? We are planning on doing the Santander Mediterráneo Vías Verdes route, which has a similar start to yours, and are trying to decide if its better to go N-S or S-N. Looking forward to day 4 😀
@@dave300m7 many thanks.... The reason for n to s was so I could get the ferry over, guaranteeing my bike would get there in one piece. I found there was a slight headwind the majority of the time which got very strong once I headed east from Seville to Malaga....... I was pondering doing the med camino from Santander to Valencia then to Alicante for the flight home but just chose this route to give me the via de la plata..... I'm planning on going back to do that though, the via verdes are beautiful!!! See you in part 4, it's one of my favourite days!
@@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventures Thanks for the info, that does make good sense, although we have had one bad experience with Brittany Ferries (where they jammed more bike on top of ours) resulting in a bent mech hanger! We are much more careful now to leave some pannier bags on the bikes to protect from that type of problem.
Does the route sign with the “X” mean “this isn’t the route”? Thats certainly how French walking and cycling routes are signed
I found out from a local later that the X means its more road and without the X is called 'El camino rural', more tracks etc Interesting trying to navigate using them but that's all part of the fun!!
Camino is a generic term. El Camino would mean a well established route.
@@VistasdelMar2008 cada dia es una escuela dia, gracias. Bien viaje 🤟🏼
We are ahead of you having rode from Paris and now in Burgos, Weather is atrocious atrong headwinds and constant rain for the past few days, Hope it inproves as you head south,
Wow, where are you finishing up? Mine's Malaga. Buen viaje ;-)
"No se rinde" = "won't surrender" - god only knows why the wrote "Indonesia won't surrender" in the middle of Castilla, but stranger things have happened. Nice video!
Many thanks again, umm maybe someone will respond on here to let us know!! Thanks for watching ;-)
Great video again brother Mark. I liked the 'large marbles' anecdote! Xx
Haha, yes I hope it got the point across. Strangely, this vid has more views than day 2, which I thought had more coolness in there... no rhyme nor reason to it ;-)
Have you reached the hotter part of Spain yet ? Great viewing again , i will have to cycle north to South myself one day. Looks epic. 👌👍
@@ExploringHabit day 4 onwards gets a bit scorchio! Thanks for watching 🤟🏼🚴🏼♂️🏕️
Thanks for clicking! This was a very chilled day of gravel tracks alongside canals which brought it's own obstacles!
Ánimo, hace tres días he acabado esta ruta, camino del Cid.
Wow, what route are you talking about?
@@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventuresProbably the route you are on currently.
@@VistasdelMar2008 question is, is it Camino del cid or El camino del cid ( I'm not doing the camino del cid as far as I'm aware)
Iron in soil appears red. Sulphur would smell nauseous and yellow/orange.
Every day is a school day, many thanks
Thanks for clicking! This is only day 2 and what an adventure so far..... today I follow a tractor, ride over a damn and admire some stunning scenery and of course it rains just to make me feel at home!
Nice trip, inspiring me to do the same next year. "Rotas" would be "broken", from the verb "romper". "Rozas" has two meanings - one is the verb "rozar" meaning something like touch/brush against/graze. The other meaning (and the one relevant to place names in Spain) is land that has been cleared/cleaned up to get it ready to sow. Bienvenido a España y buen viaje!
@@roubaix3843 thanks so much! A big reason for me choosing Spain for this trip was to practice my Spanish, I'm glad I sort of got it right 😎 I'm still really bad on the verb tenses etc but people there are so nice and patient that it makes it easy to try and not worry about making mistakes. Buen camino mi amigo, saludos 🤟🏼🏕️🚴🏼♂️
Great video brother Mark. Beautiful scenery & those hills.... good grief 😮 xxx
Another great video , I hit some serious steep hills when I left Bilbao last year. I recall one being 23 percent gradient but worth the views. Took over an hour to push my bike in 32c heat.
@@ExploringHabit yep, they know how to do hills over there! Sharp and steep! Wait till i edit the last few days in the Andalusian region, the hills weren't the only thing in my way to the finish line!!! Thanks for watching 🤟🏼🚴🏼♂️🏕️
@@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventures I'll look forward to it 👌
Camping stoves and all open fires are illegal on Dorset Beaches. Please can you pass to your fellow travellers. Thx
@@morrissey653 so is camping, but here we are. There's a big wild camping community that practises Leave No Trace principles, I always promote responsible wild camping in my content. Thanks for watching 🚴🏼♂️🏕️
@@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventures If you always promote responsible wild camping why are you showing illegal stuff on your videos ?
@@morrissey653 My view is (right or wrong!) these beautiful areas are there for people to enjoy. Some people don't do it responsibly ie leaving litter, lighting bbq's that get out of control etc.... I do these videos to show there is a responsible way of doing it. Legal or not people are going to do it, might as well try and do it nicely. I hope that answers your question?
Looks awesome brother Mark, you're a machine!
And that's just day one!
Hola, great video of this big adventure trip, i think you will be walking quite a few hills which is wise, look after your knees pal. So wild camping most of the time, but there will be Campsites with showers and or hostals, etc. When you stop at a village/town and you want a cooked dinner ask the waiter for a Del Dia which is menue/meal of the day which usually is a 3 course meal which might include a small drink (beer or wine)the cost would be the equivalent of 1 course in the UK, this may more apparent in a town maybe and perhaps further south but it might be everywhere? I live in the south of Spain but not in the area your heading for, good luck and all the best and take care, look forward to the next part 👏👋
@@Trekon2 ah thanks so much. Yes it's an adventure, no day is the same (except my sore ass!). Living in the south of Spain, I'm envious! See you next episode 🤟🏼

Thanks so much for clicking on this series. I've tried to capture the highs and lows of, what is for me, a challenge of a lifetime! Your camera and videography have got really professional. JOGLE was good but this was brilliant. The voice over and music are great! Well done, buddy. Well done! I wish you put more in about your overnight - I’d love to see more of your camp and nighttime adventures. 👏
Thanks sooo much. I was apprehensive about doing a voiceover but I never seem to 'tell the story' well when i'm actually cycling so thought i'd give it a bash....I'm glad you liked it! I was bushed by the end of day one so put the camera away and just enjoyed the evening really.... wait for day 4 or 5 when i'm camping at 1000metres up a mountain, lots of 'in camp' footage on that one!! Thanks for your positivity mi amigo, it's infectious 🤘
@@RoadyPacking-CyclingAdventures it’s incredible, buddy. I look forward to all the updates. It makes me smile to see your face and hear your voice.

Cheers! I'm old school calling these things cogs haha
Very enjoyable video. Am hoping to do the North - South journey down the Avon starting at Pewsey. There are several branches of the Avon - two seem to converge at Upavon and again at Salisbury where the river Nadder joins up. Until fairly recently large vessels would get all the way up to Salisbury and beyond which is why there are so many old towns and villages along the route. It looks a tricky area for wild camping though. Not too many isolated place. Glad you found that spot alongside the river!
@@chrisarnell1 thanks for the info. Yes I'm always looking for new spots. This one was a bit noisy though.... The first one I stopped at had a car park so lots of people milling around.....
