In this channel I share the martial art knowledge, skills and experience acquired throughout my journey. Having studied martial arts for more than two decades, I realise how strongly martial arts have shaped my life and I believe martial arts if trained correctly would help us achieving a healthy and successful lifestyle. My martial art journey so far has given me many valuable friendships, travelling and cultural exchange opportunities. I’d love to share with you what I’ve learnt, seen and experienced. Continuing with my journey, I’m going to document and share with you where my martial art journey is further leading me to.
Iaijutsu Demonstration at Kyoto Butokuden in the Mind and Physically at Home
This year I couldn't make it to the Kyoto Enbu at Butokuden. So I did the performance of my chosen five techniques at home.

IAIJUTSU KATANA SWORD SHADOW SPARRING (居合術 シャドウスパーリング)
Nice
This is very informative and helpful. ^_^
I know for iaito they are unsharpened but can you do combat sparring with them? like can to iaito blades make impact without damage risk?
Like real katana and other blades, they do get damage when hit with similar or harder materials. Even real katana gets worn out or damaged gradually during test cutting bamboos and tatami mats
@@BLACKBELTSIMON Thanks for the reply! That’s good to know. I was just curious if Iaito would be durable for sparring since getting a real katana is expensive lol
@@Numero103 If you are planning on doing HEMA type fencing/sparring but with Japanese swordsmanship there might be some iaito that could be used for that because they are very similar to Katana (most iaito are not steel blades so they might not handle impacts as well). There are other options now though, polypropylene training swords exist and you can find relatively thicker ones. Every culture throughout history has tried to find ways to decrease needless risk of injury for warriors in training or just athletes, so please do not shy away from protective gear and safer training practices.
This is interesting! ^_^ 🙂 I like it!
What are the measurements?
Domo!
what station is this?
I forgot. But you can try to google for stations good for Nozomi Shinkansen viewing at full speed passing
Looks like Odawara station
Hi will heavy-weight blade much more wide than standard blade for an iaito?
It is only slightly wider, only noticeable when compared side by side. Heavier blades feel closer to real blades
Thank you. Currently I'm using an unshapred katana for practice, but I will definitely buy iaito for safety purpose.@@BLACKBELTSIMON
My custom iaito is nearly the same I got last year except for the tsuba, hamon, and segeo string being different
Yeah some are not much different and some can be quite different. Depending on what were custom-made. The blade length; the curve angle of the blade; the kissaki type and length; the hamon type; the length of tsuka; and then things like the choice of tsuba, habaki, seppa, kogai, fuchi, tsukamaki, shitodome, menuko etc......
Congratulations on your 5th Dan grading 🙂 In which federation is your 5th Dan grade, friend? Is it the ZNKR or ZNIR? Thanks 🙂
Thank you. I belong to 土佐英信流居合術根元道場 自彊塾 Tosa Eishin Ryu Iai-Jutsu Jikyo-Juku Kongen Dojo which is a member of 日本居合術連盟 Nippon Iai-Jutsu Renmei
@@BLACKBELTSIMON Sorry for my ignorance. but is the Nippon Iai-Jutsu Renmei the same as the All Japan Iaido Federation? Thanks again 🙂
@@kenglam To be honest I actually get confused with different names and organisations which tend to split up sometimes. So nowadays I don't really care too much about organisations, styles and schools...
Thank you for sharing this video 🙂 I am curious about this technique: from your video the hind leg is sometimes raised (your knee is above ground/not touching the floor) and other times, it is not - is there a fixed way of doing this technique, or can you change it, as you see fit? Thank you 🙏
In our style we practice the same technique with variations based on different scenarios. The scenario is what we visualize in practice or in performance. Of course for beginners we simply teach one way first and explain the variations. Having said that, most iaido schools nowadays teach standardized kata for more convenient in teaching and for competition. Back to your question, the knee was kept above the ground as i pushed forward reaching the opponent further away. As i moved in closer to the opponent or when the opponent was close enough, there was no need to push forward and hence the knee would have kept on the floor. Hope this answers your question.
@@BLACKBELTSIMON Thank you for your explanation - it's highly appreciated 🙂
MAGNIFICO
Is it possible to check in an iato at the airport?
Yes you can. As long as it is a proper iaito bought from a real budo equipment store and not a fake metal one which could be sharpened as weapon. There is a chance Japanese custom would do a magnetic check at the airport to confirm your iaito is not made of metal. I'm going to post a video explaining all the requirements relating to bringing iaito or katana in and out of Japan on a plane
@@BLACKBELTSIMON thanks. Looking forward to that vid.

Yea! Gambate !
I just watched a man swing a sword up and down for a minute straight
That’s Iaido not Iaijutsu
Either good Iaido or bad Iaijutsu. I’m guessing good Iaido but the title is confusing.
So this is Iaido. Obviously not Iaijutsu. Completely different styles.
Nice Iaido. This is obviously not an Iaijutsu kata. But well done with the Iaido!
I hope my words translate; So, your whole style is essentially, "If you make me draw my blade, I'm taking a limb and putting it away. If you decide you didn't like that limb I will take another and the blade goes away. Why you gotta make me take a limb? Limbs are gross, and The sword is happier and more beautiful in its home". Okay, maybe I made some of that up but I can respect it what you got going on.
ハフハフ、カチャカチャ
Good to know 👍
What to do when one is in a situation where there are no place to learn from apart from TH-cam so I really appreciate you and thank you so much
Wonderful to learn, thanks for sharing. My wish is that it would be good to have a learning from lessons 1 to 100. that would be great for people like us doesn't have such privilege.
It would be difficult to learn everything online. However, experienced artists are able to learn and adjust some techniques by watching videos. These videos are like theories and lectures at universities. You still need to do tutorials, home works, practices and exams with the help of instructors. As a martial art practitioner and content creator, with the limitation of time and what I can upload, i would do my best to assist my subscribers/followers.
O.. I c.. But what is the range cost like?, do share. Anyway it is not easy to find an Iaido practice training centre (Dojo), and hardly any Kenjitsu. KENDO yes. So most of us join Aikido. And Aikido only teaches using bokken then using iaito. I usually do my practice using the TH-cam platform only. Not perfect and obviously no Dojo to guide... I believe if there is a Dojo teaching training iaido, the business will prosper.
Basic beginners (I do not suggest) ones are usually around 40,000 Yen. Good ones are from approx 70,000 Yen. Depends on the length as well. But if you ask the shop, they would be able to provide suggestion to you. If you want fast response, you can always call tot he shop directly. Staffs at Tozando are perfectly no problem with English. Other shops you may need to use some Japanese to communicate.
Yes I believe for katana sword (Shinken) real cutting one. And if anyone own one I believe it is still OK but not to use it in public like the law in Japan itself. Have a Iaito (dull) katana sword, as a display for decoration is allowed. Question is no one here in Malaysia retail such katana sword brought in directly from Japan especially from Tozanto. How wonderful if we have it then most katana sword are made from China.
Good iaito made from reputable makers from Japan feel and swing like a real katana. For practice it would be a good idea to order an iaito from one of these suppliers. You can look into Tozando in Kyoto; Meirin in Tennoji Osaka; and Minosaka in Gifu.
Yes I have communicated with Tozando waiting for them to get back to me. It does take a while for them to reply.
@@matthiaslow8533 That's good. May I suggest if your budget allows, consider getting a higher range iaito like a custom made one. I've tested many of their standard ones and custom made ones. The standards ones were not the best for serious practice. But the higher range ones were good.
Wow..I wish I had one will be the happiest days of my life and it is hard to buy and sip it to Malaysia. Thanks for sharing...Wow very nice
Is it illegal to own katana or iai-to in Malaysia?

You brought the kissaki inside your arm. Should be left outside the arm in preparation for the tsuki.
That's right. In fact last month in Japan I heard that our senior masters have recently modified its movement to make it less prompting to accident as such. This happened after a Japanese member in Sendai actually punctured his upper arm with his katana while doing the same movement.
