What a strange story. Thanos has a "noble" to eliminate half of life from universe because of "overpopulation" 🧐. Of endless universe withe trillions of galaxies where all organic life is a grain of sand in deserts of an entire galaxy 🧐. Sound to me like "someone" on planet earth in reality is telling the same story of "overpopulation".

This scene illustrated that Thanos was a deluded fool. He destroyed half the life in the universe but took no steps to reduce the birth rate, so overpopulation would inevitably be the end result again. He seemed to think that the "example" he set would encourage the various species to change their behavior. Not only was that notion extremely naive, but he didn't even wait to see if anyone did effect meaningful change. Since he destroyed the stones, he eliminated the only means he had to impose another correction in the future should it prove necessary. Thanos was an epic failure who died with the delusional belief that he had actually won.

Too much was asked of him. John was just a man who believed in serving his country and doing his duty. They pushed this huge legacy on his shoulders because he most resembled what they wanted. And, as the dutuful soldier, he tried to give them that.
