If you're looking for "insider information" on how to get a job with the State of California, then you've come to the right place!
I'm a recently retired Hiring Manager with the State of California that loves to help folks who want to get a good job with the State. Getting a State job is not an easy task. Maybe you've already learned that! It would be my honor and pleasure to assist in the following: applying, interviewing, hiring process tips, etc.
In this process, I'll discuss reasons folks should be interested in a State job (i.e., "the why"). Hint: There are lots of good reasons to pursue a State job!
My videos give enough information that some folks will be able to get started and succeed on their own. Other folks might need a little more information and assistance and I'm ready, willing, able, and excited to assist! You can contact me via comments on my TH-cam channel, the videos, or directly via my contact email.

Where do you indicate veteran status to get the extra points for veterans preference?
You need to use an audio plug-in to process your voice. A subtle preset would likely make a big difference.
Important Add/Note: You "vest" with the State of California/CalPERS retirement plan after 5 years. After that is when you can put in for retirement. Hope this helps! ;-)
Kent, the state’s terms are confusing. 1) What’s the difference between an ‘exam’ and an ‘assessment’? 2) When is the subject matter exam during the process? Thanks for posting these helpful videos.
1. At the State of California, you can think of exams and self-assessments as the same. The “exams” are almost always in the form of an online self-assessments where you answer questions that are targeted at determining your: A. years of experience, and B. skill level for things related to doing the job or performing in the specific classification in question. 2. Ideally, you should plan on taking said classification exam/self-assessment before you start submitting applications. Hope this helps. Email me at CaliJobCoach@outlook.com if you’d like. ;-)
Hi Coach. I landed a conditional job offer with DMV. It’s been 5 weeks since I did my finger print. I have not heard back from them. Does this mean they went with another candidate? I’m sure my background is clean. Hoping since it’s so close to the holiday that’s why it is taking a bit longer. I left a message but haven’t heard back. Should I reach out to the hiring department or just keep applying at this point?
Reach out to the Hiring Manager who made you the conditional offer. He or she owes you some sort of explanation or status update. Congrats on the conditional offer! ;-)
Hi I hope you can help me answer this. HR asked for my references and a week after I provided my references I was told my references are being reviewed by the hiring manager. Today is the first week since that last comms. What normally happens after this? Does it normally take more than a aweek before I hear something? Thanks
Jermaine Here. Thanks Kent. I just emailed you about one on one coaching. Hoping to hear from you soon.
Thanks for the extra information and break down ...I'm already a state employee but I have an interview for cal trans landscape maintenance coming up
Good luck brother or sister! ;-)
I did a live scan and my packet also got send to the HR for review at CalPERS per the hiring manager. Almost 4 weeks now. Does it normally take that long for HR to review your background?
@@saeternbros , lately, since the hiring slowdown, it has been taking longer than usual. Sounds like you're on the right track though. Let us all know when you get your firm offer and have a start date. :-)
Your prices are totally fair and these are all good questions.
Thank you so much💯
Would you say on average county/city jobs pay more (btw I’m state employee)

Hello Coach, thank you for your videos. 🤗 This is my first time applying for government jobs. Today, I received a call for an accountant I position interview from the CHP department. Would it be possible to set up an appointment with you so I can be well-prepared for the interview? Thank you again!

Hi Kent, I want to thank you for all your thoughtful advice towards the hiring process with the State of California. I accepted a job on 10/17/24, and have been organizing the necessary paperwork and physical exam to get a start date. The close date for the job was 7/9/24, and I was interviewed later in July. As I mentioned, I was contacted 10/17 with the offer. A week or more went by before I was contacted again. They reached out with some required documents which I promptly returned, and today, 11/19, I'm still ironing out some details in order to get a start date. I hope to have this finished by the end of the week. I'm not allowed to discuss the questions I was asked, but I felt well versed in the process after watching your videos, and things did not come as a big surprise once the interview started. I rehearsed my how I would speak to my skills and generally wanted to sound confident about my abilities during the interview, and it paid off in this instance. I'll take it, ha! Thanks again! Tony
@@tonygSDWR , Glad I played a part in your career start at State of California! If you don't mind, what classification and department apply? Thanks in advance!
@@calistatejobcoach The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection-CalFire 👍
@tonygSDWR And your classification?
Hi Kent! Thank you so much for sharing these videos-they’ve been incredibly helpful! I recently received a tentative offer, but I’ve also been invited to interview for other positions. I’m unsure whether I should turn those down or move forward with the interviews. Would accepting the interviews come across as unprofessional? Some people around me suggest not declining interviews until I’ve received a formal contract from HR. Can you please advise me on this?
Which department and what classification apply? Are the interviews for positions with the same classification? Or are they for higher (read, more pay) classifications? Answers to these questions might effect the decision making process. That said, I'd guess that about 19/20 (95%) of tentative offers become final (or unconditional). So, if the interviews are not for higher paying positions, and are not for more desirable departments (in your mind not mine); then I might cancel the other interviews if I was you. Save yourself and those Hring Managers the trouble. Hope this makes sense! Thanks for your kind words!! ;-)

Is it true that it could take months I applied to a job in September of this year and haven’t heard anything
It usually only takes 3 or 4 weeks to hear back regarding an interview opportunity for a specific application. Hopefully you haven't "put all your eggs in one basket" and applied to just this one job opening. You need to apply to several (5 or 10) jobs in order to get 2, 3, maybe 4 interviews. Then go on 3-5 interviews to get an offer. Those metrics are borne out of hundreds if not thousands of hiring efforts. Hope this helps! :-)
How long would u say it takes to hear back about an interview from submission of application? It has been 9 business days since I submitted my application a day before priority app deadline for a job in which I was speaking about with the search committee thru cal state university. The status switched from “under consideration” to “under review” about last Friday. The faculty chair via email encouraged me to apply and were impressed by my credentials. Should I check in with this faculty member? Just checking in if I should stay hopeful or just move forward. Appreciate your help!!
@@LorraineAlire-h7h Usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to get interview invite. Wouldn't hurt to follow-up with the faculty member. :-)
Thank u for appeasing my anxieties. I will wait perhaps until the 2 week mark (next Monday) to do a gentle follow up. Do u have any recommendations as to how I could follow up to the faculty?
Hello coach Kent, I just applied for an education director position at cal state university. I reached out to some faculty beforehand and got in contact with a faculty committee member who encouraged me to apply, said they were really impressed by my credentials, and spoke with me via email about the job and center a bit. Currently my app is “under review” it has been about 7 business days since I’ve applied. Do you think it’s likely I could get an interview ?
I also applied a day before the priority application deadline Oct.27 (when priority apps closed and positing is open til filled) . Thank u

Hi Kent, is it possible to make a video on the student positions. I applied for some but I feel like since I am a student, I don’t necessarily have all the experience that certain roles call for. What are some tips? How does the hiring process differ when it comes to Student Assistants? Many thanks!

Thank you for these tips. They are consistent with the tips of another hiring manager I know as well as all the state employees I know of. This year, 2024: Submitted 16 applications. Received 4 interviews. Landed an offer. Received a 5th interview after I accepted the previous offer. Here’s the timeline for the job I’m taking: 08/12/24: Submitted application. 08/18/24: Final file date. 09/30/24: Interviewed. 10/07/24: Tentative offer. Contingent on background check. 10/28/24: My first day working.

I got a call yesterday regarding a reference check, will the hiring manager contact all my references I listed? Will they also contact my current/ previous managers? Thank you!
Hello, what is your email? I want to ask couple questions for my interview. Thank you for all your help.

quick question for you if caltrans is checking references on you does that generally mean they have chosen you
It definitely means you're on their "short list" of top two or three candidates. It could mean that you are the top candidate. It good news regardless. Best of luck to you Shawn!! ;-)

I have a question about my application for the landscaping OP2 position at Caltrans. It has been five months since my interview, which involved three interviewers. A few weeks later, a supervisor called to inform me that I was selected as one of the candidates. After that, it took two more months for me to be send to complete a drug test. Not sure if that score matters I pass with 75%. Now I’m unsure which department received my documents and drug test results for the final offer. It's been a week since I took the drug test, and I'm still waiting for an official offer or start date. How much longer could this process take for this offer. Is this time normal 5 months so far. It’s becoming quite stressful, as I am eager to work for Caltrans.
@@Mychakramusic 5 months is not normal. Followup via phone or email with the Hiring Manager ASAP. They owe you some sort of explanation.
@@calistatejobcoach weird Rigth! About 2 weeks ago they send me to drug test. I guess they are working on it. But yet I think is too much. However the hiring manager told me that first they have to give priority to the people working for Caltrans asking for transferíng. I really hope they just give me the opportunity to work for them. ✌️ About 6 weeks they told me that I was next on the list, 30 days later they send me to the drug test. This about 2 wees ago. I called yesterday Friday and they said to wait.
Why did it take a month to receive a formal offer? Is that the new norm now with state jobs?
@@abualzuaree Every Department, Branch, and Unit is different. That said, things do seem to be going slower on average. ;-)

I'm on my 36th interview with the state over the course of 5 months. I think it is the interviews that are tripping me up. In the past I have interviewed really well for some reason I am struggling now. I've also gotten some odd questions and feedback that has thrown me off during interviews.
The good news is that you absolutely know - out of all the steps in a rather lengthy State of California hiring process - where your "issue" is. It's the interview!
